Stranded Between Fear and Regret
Kabir paints a traveler who has climbed high but finds the stairway ahead too narrow and steep, while the depth already crossed below is terrifying — so, losing heart, he simply sits down in cowardice. Likewise, a sheltered, delicate woman crossing the sea in a boat, unable to bear the storm's hardship, halts her journey midway and drops anchor far from either shore. This is the state of the pleasure-loving and comfort-seeking soul, who starts toward liberation but, finding the path ahead hard and the world behind painful, gives up in the middle, clinging to attachment and reaching neither shore.
