In the village of Baidon, Mahadev the goldsmith was a well-known man. He would sit in his shed from morning till evening before his little furnace, tapping away. People had grown so accustomed to hearing that ceaseless tapping that whenever it happened to stop for some reason, it seemed as though something had gone missing from the world. Every day, once in the early morning, carrying his parrot's cage and singing some devotional hymn, he would set off toward the pond. In that dim light, seeing his decrepit body, his toothless mouth, and his stooped back, any stranger might have mistaken him for a ghost. The moment the words reached people's ears - 'Satt Gurudatt Shivadatt Data' - they knew that dawn had come.

Mahadev's family life was not a happy one. He had three sons, three daughters-in-law, and dozens of grandchildren; but there was no one to lighten his burden. His sons would say, 'As long as father is alive, let us enjoy the pleasures of life; the drum will fall on our own necks soon enough.' Poor Mahadev sometimes had to go without food altogether. At mealtimes such a sky-splitting clamour of communism would break out in his house that he would get up still hungry, and smoke his coconut-shell hookah and fall asleep. His professional life was no less troubled. Although he was skilled at his craft - his acid bath far purer than others', his chemical processes far more painstaking - he still had to hear, almost every day, the abuse of suspicious and impatient customers. But Mahadev, unshaken, would bow his head gravely and hear it all out. The moment the quarrel subsided, he would look toward his parrot and cry out - 'Satt Gurudatt Shivadatt Data.' The instant he chanted this mantra, perfect peace would settle upon his mind.

One day, by chance, some boy opened the door of the cage. The parrot flew away. When Mahadev raised his head and looked toward the cage, his heart gave a lurch. Where had the parrot gone! He looked at the cage again - the parrot was gone. Mahadev got up in a panic and began casting his eyes here and there over the tiled roofs. If there was one thing in the world dear to him, it was this parrot. He had had his fill of children and grandchildren. The mischief of the little ones interfered with his work. He had no love for his sons - not because they were worthless, but because on their account he was kept from his regular quota of delightful kulhads. He was irritated with his neighbours, because they would slip away with the charcoal from his furnace. From all these vexations and obstacles, if there was any refuge for him, it was this very parrot. From it he suffered no trouble of any kind. He was now at that stage of life when a man wants nothing but the enjoyment of peace.

The parrot was sitting on a tiled roof. Mahadev took down the cage, and holding it up to show the bird, began calling - 'Come, come, Satt Gurudatt Shivadatt Data.' But the boys of the village and the household gathered round, shouting and clapping their hands. From above, the crows set up a chorus of cawing. The parrot flew off, and going beyond the village, came to rest on a tree. Mahadev, empty cage in hand, ran after it - ran and ran. People marvelled at his swiftness. No fonder, more vivid, more soulful image of Attachment could be conceived.

It was now midday. The farmers were coming back from their fields. They found a fine occasion for amusement. Everyone enjoyed teasing Mahadev. Someone threw pebbles, someone clapped; the parrot flew again, and went off to perch far away, on the very tip of a tree in a mango orchard. Mahadev, still carrying the empty cage, went bounding along like a frog. By the time he reached the orchard, the skin was peeling from the soles of his feet, and his head was reeling. When he had steadied himself a little, he again lifted the cage and began to call - 'Satt Gurudatt Shivadatt Data.' The parrot came down from the tip of the branch to a lower bough, but kept eyeing Mahadev with wary looks. Mahadev thought it was frightened. He left the cage and hid himself behind another tree. The parrot looked carefully all around. Reassured, it came down and settled on top of the cage. Mahadev's heart began to flutter. Chanting the mantra 'Satt Gurudatt Shivadatt Data', he crept slowly toward the parrot, and lunged to catch it; but the parrot slipped from his grasp and flew back up into the tree.

This went on till evening. The parrot would go now to this branch, now to that. Sometimes it would come and perch on the cage, sometimes sit at the door of the cage and gaze at its little cups of food and water, and then fly off again. If the old man was Attachment incarnate, the parrot was Illusion made flesh. At last evening came. This battle of Illusion and Attachment dissolved into the darkness.

Night fell. Dense darkness settled on every side. The parrot, no one knew, sat hidden somewhere among the leaves. Mahadev knew that at night the parrot could neither fly off anywhere nor come to the cage; and yet he would not so much as stir from that spot. All day he had eaten nothing; the hour for his night meal too had come and gone; not a drop of water had gone down his throat; but he felt neither hunger nor thirst. Without the parrot, his life seemed to him barren, dry, and desolate. He worked day and night because it was an inward compulsion of his nature; the other tasks of life he performed merely from habit. In these tasks he had not the least awareness of his own aliveness. The parrot alone was the thing that reminded him of his own consciousness. To lose it from his hand was as if the soul were to abandon the body.

Mahadev, hungry and thirsty and worn out from the whole day, kept dozing off now and again; but in an instant he would start awake once more, and in that vast darkness his voice could be heard - 'Satt Gurudatt Shivadatt Data.' Midnight had passed. Suddenly he started, catching some sound. He saw that beneath another tree a dim lamp was burning, and several men sat together, talking among themselves. They were all smoking a chillum. The smell of tobacco made him restless. He called out loudly - 'Satt Gurudatt Shivadatt Data' - and started toward those men to smoke; but just as deer bolt at the sound of a gunshot, so all of them, seeing him approach, sprang up and fled. Some went this way, some that. Mahadev began shouting - 'Stop, stop!' Suddenly it struck him - these are thieves. He cried out loudly - 'Thief, thief, catch them, catch them!' The thieves did not so much as look back.

Mahadev went up to the lamp and found a pitcher sitting there, blackened with verdigris. Mahadev's heart began to leap. He thrust his hand into the pitcher, and found it full of coins. He took out one coin and looked at it in the lamplight - yes, they were gold mohurs. He at once picked up the pitcher, put out the lamp, and sat hidden beneath the tree. From an honest man he had turned into a thief.

Then a fresh fear struck him - what if the thieves should return, and finding him alone, snatch the mohurs from him? He tied some of the coins about his waist, then with a dry stick cleared away the earth at several spots, dug little pits, filled them with mohurs, and covered them over with soil.

Before Mahadev's inner eye there now opened up an altogether different world - full of anxieties and imaginings. Though there was still the fear that the treasure might slip from his grasp, his desires had already begun their work. A solid brick house was built; a great jeweller's shop opened; ties were renewed with his own kin; the materials of luxury were gathered together. Then he set off on a pilgrimage, and returning from it, held, with great fanfare, a feast for his good name and a Brahmin-feeding. After this a Shiva temple and a well were built, and there he began daily to listen to sacred recitations and legends. Sadhus and holy men began to be honoured and entertained.

Suddenly it occurred to him - if the thieves should come, however would I run! To test himself he picked up the pitcher, and ran headlong for two hundred paces without stopping. It seemed as if wings had sprouted on his feet. His worry was set at rest. In these very fancies the night passed away. Dawn arrived; the breeze woke; the birds began to sing. Suddenly a sound reached Mahadev's ears -

'Satt Gurudatt Shivadatt Data,

These words always lived on Mahadev's tongue. A thousand times a day they issued from his mouth; but their religious sense had never once touched his inner being. Just as a tune issues from an instrument, so these words issued from his mouth - meaningless and without effect. Then, the tree of his heart had been bare of leaf and branch; this pure breeze could not set it humming. But now that tree had put forth fresh shoots and boughs; at this current of air it swayed and hummed with life.

It was the hour of sunrise. Nature lay steeped in a rose-tinted light. At that very moment the parrot, folding its wings, descended from the high bough - as if a star had fallen loose from the sky - and came and settled on the cage. Mahadev, overjoyed, ran to it, and lifting up the cage said - 'Come, Atmaram, you gave me much trouble, but you have also made my life a success. Now I shall keep you in a silver cage, and gild it with gold.' From every pore of his body arose the sound of praise for the Almighty - Lord, how merciful you are! This is your boundless tenderness, else when was a sinner as fallen as I ever worthy of such grace! His soul grew overwhelmed with these pure feelings. Filled with devotion, he cried out -

Mahadev reached home; it was still somewhat dark. On the way he met no one but a dog, and a dog has no particular fondness for gold mohurs. He hid the pitcher in a feeding-trough, covered it well over with charcoal, and put it away in his little room. When day had broken, he went straight to the priest's house. The priest was sitting at his worship, thinking - tomorrow is the hearing of the lawsuit, and there is not a cowrie in hand yet; not one of his patrons so much as draws breath for him. Just then Mahadev bowed in greeting. The priest turned his face away. Where has this ill-omened figure sprung from, who knows - will even his morning's grain be forthcoming today? He asked irritably - 'What is it, eh, what do you want? Don't you know we are at our worship at this hour?' Mahadev said - 'Maharaj, today there is to be a Satyanarayan katha at my house.'

'Brothers, my whole life has passed in deceit and fraud. I do not know how many men I have cheated, how much pure metal I have turned to base; but now God has shown mercy upon me, and wishes to wipe the soot from my face. I declare openly, calling on all you brothers, that whoever has anything owing to him from me, whoever's deposit I have swallowed, whoever's good goods I have adulterated - let him come and receive every last cowrie that is his due. And if anyone cannot be present here, let those of you present go and tell him - from tomorrow, for a month, whenever he pleases, let him come and settle his account. There is no need of witness or proof.'

But at that moment people were less eager to collect their dues than to know from where this man had suddenly come by such wealth. No one had the courage to approach Mahadev. They were village folk, what did they know of digging up buried corpses. And besides, most people did not even remember what they had to claim from Mahadev, and the fear of making some error on so sacred an occasion kept their mouths shut. Above all, Mahadev's saintliness had cast a spell over them.

Comments began to be passed on the priest's greed - 'This is sheer dishonesty - at most there could have been two or four rupees' loss. He's wrung fifty out of the poor fellow. Not even the fear of God in him. Pretends to be a pandit, and such a rotten disposition! Ram, Ram!!' People came to feel something like reverence for Mahadev. An hour passed, but out of those thousands of people not one stood up. Then Mahadev spoke again - 'It seems you have all forgotten your accounts.
For a whole month Mahadev waited for his creditors. At night, from fear of thieves, sleep would not come to him. Now he did no work at all. His taste for liquor, too, left him. Whatever sadhus and wayfarers came to his door, he received and honoured as was fitting. Far and wide his good name spread. At last the month was complete, and not a single man came to settle accounts. Now Mahadev came to know how much righteousness, how much fair dealing, there truly is in the world! Now he understood that the world is bad for the bad, and good for the good.

About Mahadev too there are any number of popular legends. Of these the most widely credited is that after Atmaram passed into eternal rest, he went off to the Himalayas along with several ascetics, and never returned from there. His own name became famous, thereafter, as Atmaram.
