Among animals, the donkey is considered the most witless. When we want to call a man an utter fool, we call him a donkey. Whether the donkey truly is a fool, or whether it is his simplicity, his uncomplaining forbearance, that has earned him this title, cannot be said for certain. Cows gore with their horns; a cow that has just calved will, without provocation, take on the very likeness of a lioness. The dog too is a poor creature, but even he loses his temper now and then; the donkey, though, has never been heard or seen to grow angry. Beat that poor creature as much as you like, set before him whatever foul, rotten grass you please -- never will a shadow of discontent cross his face. Perhaps once or twice in the month of Vaishakh he may kick up his heels in play, but we have never seen him look happy. A permanent gloom hangs, as it were, permanently over his face. Neither joy nor sorrow, neither loss nor gain, is ever seen to change him. Every virtue the sages and seers possess, he has carried to its utmost extreme -- and yet man calls him a fool. Nowhere else have such good qualities been held in such contempt. Perhaps simplicity does not suit this world. Look at the wretched state of Indians in Africa. Why are they not allowed to enter America? The poor fellows do not drink liquor, they set aside a few paise against hard times, they toil till they break their backs, they quarrel with no one, they swallow their pride when spoken to harshly. And still they are called rogues. It is said they lower the ideal of life. If only they too had learned to answer a brick with a stone, perhaps they would by now be called civilized. Japan stands as the example before us. A single victory was enough to admit her into the ranks of the civilized nations of the world.
But the donkey has a younger brother, only a little less of a donkey than himself, and that is the 'bullock.' In much the same sense that we use the word 'donkey,' we also use the phrase 'bachhiya ka tau' -- uncle of the heifer. Some people might call the bullock the greatest fool of all; but that is not our view. The bullock does, on occasion, strike out; now and then one even comes across a downright stubborn bullock. And in various other ways too he shows his displeasure; and so his rank is a little below the donkey's.
Jhuri the vegetable-grower's two bullocks were named Hira and Moti. Both were of the Pachai breed -- handsome to look at, alert at work, tall of build. Having lived together so long, a brotherly bond had grown up between them. Sitting facing each other or side by side, they would exchange thoughts in a silent language of their own. How each understood what was in the other's mind, we cannot say. They must surely have possessed some secret power denied to man, who claims superiority over all living creatures. Each would show his love for the other by licking and sniffing him, and now and then the two would even lock horns -- not in a spirit of quarrel, but only in play, in affection, the way close friends will come to cuffing and jostling one another once real intimacy has grown between them. Without this, friendship remains somewhat thin, somewhat flimsy, not to be trusted too far. Whenever the two bullocks were yoked to the plough or the cart and went along swinging their necks, each would strive to see that the greater share of the load fell upon his own neck. When they were unyoked at midday or in the evening after the day's work, they would lick and nuzzle each other to ease their weariness. Once the oil-cake and chaff were put in the trough, the two would rise together, put their heads into the trough together, and settle down to eat together. If one drew his mouth away, the other would draw his away too.
As it happened, Jhuri once sent them off to his in-laws' place. What did the bullocks know of why they were being sent away? They took it that the master had sold them. Whether being sold like this pleased them or pained them, who can say -- but Jhuri's brother-in-law Gaya sweated blood getting them all the way home. Driven from behind, the two would bolt left and right; pulled from the front by the leading-rope, the two would strain backward. Struck, the two would lower their horns and bellow. Had God given them speech, they would have asked Jhuri: why are you driving us poor creatures out? We have left nothing undone in your service. If our labor was not enough, you might have asked more of us. We were ready to die in your service. We never once complained of our fodder. Whatever you fed us, we ate with bowed heads -- then why have you sold us into this tyrant's hands?
By evening the two bullocks reached their new home. They had gone hungry all day; but when they were set before the trough, neither so much as put his mouth to it. Their hearts were heavy. The place they had come to think of as home was lost to them today. This new home, this new village, these new people -- all of it felt foreign to them.
The two took counsel together in their silent language, glanced sidelong at each other, and lay down. When the village had fallen asleep, the two strained with all their might, snapped their tethers, and set off toward home! The ropes were very strong -- no one would have guessed any bullock could break them -- but at that moment a double strength had come into the two of them. At a single wrench, the ropes gave way.
When Jhuri woke in the morning, he found the two bullocks standing at the manger. Half a length of broken tether dangled from each of their necks. Their legs were caked with mud to the knee; and in the eyes of both there shone a rebellious devotion.
Jhuri, seeing the bullocks, was overcome with tenderness. He ran and threw his arms about their necks. The sight of that loving embrace and those kisses was a lovely one indeed.
The boys of the house and the village gathered round and welcomed them with clapping hands. Though not unprecedented in the village's history, the event was nonetheless a notable one. The children's assembly resolved that the two animal-heroes ought to be given an address of honor. Some brought bread from their own homes, some jaggery, some bran, some husk.
One boy said, 'No one else has bullocks like these.'
Another agreed, 'They came all this way alone, the two of them.'
A third said, 'They're not bullocks -- they must have been men in some past life.'
No one had the courage to contradict this.
Jhuri's wife saw the bullocks at the door and flared up. 'What ungrateful wretches of bullocks,' she said, 'that they wouldn't work even a single day there. Ran straight off.'
Jhuri could not bear this charge against his bullocks. 'Ungrateful, how? They must not have been given fodder -- what else were they to do!'
His wife said imperiously, 'Oh, of course -- you're the only one who knows how to feed bullocks, everyone else just keeps them on water.' Jhuri retorted, needling her, 'If they'd been given fodder, why would they have run off?'
His wife bristled. 'They ran off because those people don't go stroking their bullocks the way a fool like you does. If they feed them, they work them hard for it too. These two are just work-shy, that's why they bolted. Now let's see where they get their oil-cake and bran from! I'll give them nothing but dry husk -- they can eat it or die.'
And so it was. The farmhand was given strict orders that the bullocks be fed nothing but dry husk.
When the bullocks put their mouths to the trough, it was flat and tasteless -- no richness, no savor! What was there to eat? They began gazing toward the door with eyes full of hope.
Jhuri said to the farmhand, 'Why don't you put in a little oil-cake, eh?'
'The mistress will kill me.'
'Sneak some in, then.'

'No, brother -- later you'll turn round and say the same as them.'

The next day Jhuri's brother-in-law came again and led the bullocks away. He yoked the two of them to the cart.
Two or three times Moti tried to tip the cart into the ditch by the road; but Hira held it steady. He was the more patient of the two.
Reaching home in the evening, he tied the two of them up with thick ropes and made them pay for yesterday's mischief. Then he put out the same dry husk. To his own two bullocks he gave oil-cake, bran flour -- everything.
Never had the two bullocks known such humiliation. Jhuri would not have touched them even with a flower-stalk; at his mere click of the tongue the two would fly to work. Here they were beaten. On top of the pain of wounded pride, there was this dry husk besides! They would not even lift their eyes toward the trough. The next day Gaya yoked the bullocks to the plough; but the two of them seemed to have sworn an oath not to lift a foot. He wore himself out beating them, but neither would move. Once, when that merciless man dealt Hira several sharp blows on the nose, Moti's anger went beyond all restraint. He bolted, plough and all. Plough, rope, yoke, harness -- everything was smashed and torn to pieces. Had it not been for the great thick ropes around their necks, the two would never have been caught.
Hira said in their silent language, 'Running is pointless.'
Moti answered in the same language, 'He was near enough taking your life. This time we'll get a terrible beating.'
'Let it come. We were born bullocks -- how long can we escape a beating?'
'Gaya is running toward us with two men. Both of them have sticks in their hands.'
Moti said, 'Say the word and I'll show him a thing or two myself. He's coming with a stick.'
Hira reasoned with him, 'No, brother! Just stand still.'
'If he hits me, I'll knock down one or two of them myself.'
'No. That is not the way of our kind.'
Moti had to swallow his anger. Gaya arrived, seized the two of them, and led them away. It was fortunate that he did not beat them just then, or Moti would have turned on him too. Seeing the look in his eyes, Gaya and his companions understood that discretion, for the moment, was the wiser course.
That day the same dry husk was set before them again. The two stood there without touching it. The people of the house sat down to their meal. Just then a little girl came out with two rotis and, putting one into each of their mouths, went back in. One roti was hardly enough to still their hunger; but it was as though their hearts had been fed. So there was a kind soul living here too. The girl was Bhairon's daughter. Her mother was dead, and her stepmother used to beat her; and so she had come to feel a kind of kinship with these bullocks.
All day the two were yoked to work, beaten with sticks, and balked; in the evening they were tied up at their stall, and at night that same little girl would come and feed them their two rotis. Such was the grace of that love that even on a mouthful or two of dry husk the two did not grow weak; yet in their eyes, in every hair of their hides, rebellion lay stored up.

'But you know that sweet girl who feeds us the rotis -- she's the daughter of the very man who owns this house. The poor thing would be left an orphan.'

'Then let me fling the mistress instead. She's the one who beats the girl.'

'Yes, that I agree to; but how will such a thick rope ever break?'
'There's a way. First chew the rope a little. Then it goes with a single wrench.'

Hira said, 'Let's go, then -- but tomorrow trouble will fall on this poor orphan girl. Everyone will suspect her.' Just then the girl cried out, 'The uncle's bullocks are running off! Oh, Dada! Dada! Both bullocks are running away! Come quick!'
Gaya rushed out in a fluster and went to catch the bullocks. The two of them ran. Gaya gave chase. They went faster still. Gaya raised the alarm, then turned back to fetch some men from the village to help him. The two friends got their chance to flee. They ran straight on, until they no longer knew the way. Of the familiar road they had come by, there was no trace here. New villages kept appearing, one after another. At last the two of them stopped at the edge of a field and fell to wondering what to do now.

Both were faint with hunger. There was a field of peas standing nearby. They began to graze, pausing every so often to listen for footsteps, to see if anyone was coming.
When their bellies were full, and they felt the taste of freedom, they grew frisky and began leaping and bounding about. First the two of them belched contentedly. Then they locked horns and began shoving each other. Moti pushed Hira back several paces, until he tumbled into a ditch. That roused Hira's temper too. He picked himself up and squared off against Moti again. Moti, seeing that the game was about to turn into a real fight, stepped aside.

Oh! What's that! Some bull comes bellowing along. Yes, it's a bull, sure enough. It came right up before them. The two friends looked at each other sidelong, at a loss. The bull was a veritable elephant of a creature. To take him on meant losing one's life for certain; but even without taking him on, there seemed no way to save their lives either. He was coming straight for them, too. What a terrifying sight he was!

'The only way is for the two of us to strike him together. I'll charge him from the front, you drive at him from behind -- hit twice over, he'll turn tail and run. The moment he lunges at me, you come in from the side and drive your horns into his belly. It's a risk to life; but there's no other way.'
The two friends charged in, their lives in their own hands. The bull had never had experience of fighting two enemies joined together -- he was used only to single combat, one against one. The moment he lunged at Hira, Moti drove at him from behind. The bull spun round toward him, and Hira charged in. The bull wanted to bring the two of them down one at a time, but these two were old hands at this, and gave him no such chance. Once the bull, enraged, made straight for Hira meaning to finish him off, when Moti caught him from the side and drove his horns into his belly. The bull, maddened with fury, wheeled round -- and Hira sank his horns into his other flank. At last the poor beast turned and fled, wounded, and the two friends chased him far, until the bull collapsed, spent and gasping. Only then did they let him be.

There was a pea field right there in front of them. Moti went straight into it. Hira kept trying to stop him, but he wouldn't listen. He had eaten only a mouthful or two when two men came running up with sticks and surrounded the two friends. Hira was up on the field's bank and got away. But Moti was in the middle of the freshly watered field, and his hooves began sinking into the mud -- he could not run, and was caught. Hira saw that his companion was in trouble and turned back. If they were to be caught, they would be caught together. The watchmen caught him too.

For the first time in their lives, the two friends learned what it was to have a whole day go by without so much as a straw to eat. They could not make out what kind of master this was -- Gaya, by comparison, had been better than this. There were several buffaloes there, several goats, several horses, several donkeys, and not one of them had fodder before it; all lay on the ground like corpses. Some had grown so weak they could not even stand. All day long the two friends kept their eyes fixed on the gate, but no one appeared bringing fodder. Then the two of them took to licking the salty earth of the wall -- but what satisfaction could that give!
When night came and still no food had reached them, the fire of rebellion blazed up in Hira's heart. He said to Moti, 'I can't bear it any longer, Moti!'

Moti answered, his head hanging, 'It feels to me as though the life is going out of me.'

The wall of the enclosure was made of unbaked mud. Hira, who was strong to begin with, drove his sharp horns into the wall and heaved -- a clod of earth came away. That gave him courage. He began charging at the wall again and again, and with every blow a little more earth came tumbling down.
Just then the pound-keeper came out with a lantern to take the roll call of the animals. Seeing Hira behaving so unruly, he dealt him several blows with a stick and tied him up with a thick rope.
Moti said, lying there, 'Well, you took a beating for it -- what did you get out of it?'
'I put in as much effort as I had in me, at least.'
'What good is effort like that, that only gets you tied up all the tighter?'
'I'll go on trying, no matter how many more ropes they put on me.' 'You'll end up losing your life over it.'
'I don't care. We're going to die anyway. Just think -- if the wall came down, how many lives would be saved! So many of our brothers are shut up in here. There's no life left in any of their bodies. If things go on like this a few days more, they'll all die.'
'Yes, that's true enough. All right then, here -- I'll put my strength into it too.'
Moti too drove his horns into the wall at the same spot. A little more earth came down, and his courage grew. Then he set his horns to the wall and began straining with such force, it was as if he were locked in combat with a rival. At last, after some two hours of struggle, about a cubit of the wall's top came down. He struck a second blow with redoubled strength, and half the wall collapsed.
No sooner had the wall come down than all the animals lying there half-dead sprang back to life. The three mares broke free at a gallop. Then the goats got out. After them the buffaloes too slipped away; but the donkeys still stood exactly where they had been.
Hira asked, 'Why don't you two run off?'
One of the donkeys said, 'What if we're caught again somewhere?'
'Well, what's the harm in that? At least there's a chance to escape now.'
'We're afraid. We'll stay right here.'
It was well past midnight. The two donkeys still stood there thinking whether to run or not. And Moti was busy trying to break his friend's rope. When he had worn himself out at it, Hira said, 'You go. Let me stay here as I am. Perhaps we'll meet again somewhere.'
Moti said, tears coming to his eyes, 'Do you take me for such a selfish creature, Hira? You and I have lived together so long. Now that you're in trouble, am I to leave you and go my own way?' Hira said, 'You'll get a terrible beating. They'll know this was your doing.'
Moti said proudly, 'If I get beaten for the same offense that got a rope round your neck, what does it matter? At least this much has been achieved -- nine or ten lives have been saved. All of them will bless us for it.'
So saying, Moti butted the two donkeys again and again with his horns until he had driven them out of the enclosure, and then came back and lay down beside his friend.
What a commotion broke out at daybreak among the clerk, the watchman, and the other staff, there is no need to describe. It is enough to say that Moti was given a thorough drubbing, and he too was tied up with a thick rope.

For a whole week the two friends lay there tied up. No one put so much as a blade of fodder before them. True, they were shown water once a day -- that alone kept them alive. Both had grown so weak they could scarcely even rise. Their ribs stood out through their skin.
One day a drum began to sound in front of the enclosure, and by noon some fifty or sixty men had gathered there. The two friends were then led out and put up for inspection. People came, looked them over, and went away disheartened. Who would buy such half-dead bullocks as these?
All at once a bearded man came up, red-eyed, with a face of the utmost hardness, and, poking his finger into the two friends' haunches, fell to talking with the clerk. At the sight of his face, some inner sense made both their hearts quake. As to who he was and why he was feeling them over, they had no doubt at all. The two looked at each other with frightened eyes and hung their heads. Hira said, 'We ran from Gaya's house for nothing. Now there'll be no saving our lives.'
Moti answered with a note of disbelief, 'They say God has mercy on all. Why does no mercy come to us, then?'
'To God, our dying and our living come to the same thing. Well, let it be -- it's just as well, we'll at least have a few more days in this world. Once before, God saved us in the form of that girl. Won't he save us now?'
'This man will take a knife to us. Just wait and see.'

'Then what is there to worry about. Our flesh, our hide, our horns, our bones -- all of it will be of use to someone or other.'
After the auction, the two friends set off with the bearded man. Every shred of their flesh was trembling! Poor creatures, they could barely lift their feet; yet out of sheer terror they went stumbling and staggering along, for the moment their pace slackened even a little, he would bring his stick down hard upon them.
Along the way, a herd of cows and bullocks came into view grazing in a lush green meadow. Every animal there was happy, sleek, and lively -- some frisking about, some sitting contentedly chewing the cud. How happy a life theirs was! But how selfish they all were, too. Not one of them gave a thought to how two of their own brothers, fallen into the hands of a butcher, were suffering!
All at once it struck the two of them that this was a familiar road. Yes -- this was the very road by which Gaya had taken them away. The same fields, the same orchard, the same village began to appear. With every moment their pace quickened. All their weariness, all their weakness vanished. Ah! Look at that! Here was their own meadow. This was the very well where they used to work the water-wheel. Yes, this was the very well.

The two of them, wild with joy, went bounding toward home like a pair of calves at play. There was their stall! The two ran to their own stall and stood there. The bearded man came running along behind them.

The bearded man, losing his temper, stepped forward to seize the bullocks by force. At that very moment Moti lowered his horns. The bearded man fell back. Moti went after him. The bearded man ran. Moti ran after him. Once outside the village he stopped, but stood there watching the road the man had taken. The bearded man stood some way off, hurling threats and curses, flinging stones; and Moti stood blocking his way like a triumphant warrior. The villagers stood watching the spectacle and laughing. When the bearded man at last gave up and went away, Moti came swaggering back.
