Whether our English-educated friends agree or not, I will still say that gulli-danda is the king of all games. Even now, whenever I see boys playing gulli-danda, my heart turns over with the urge to go and join them. No lawn is needed, no court, no net, no paddle. Simply cut a branch from any tree, whittle a gulli, and if two more fellows turn up, the game is on. The great fault of foreign games is that their equipment is expensive. Unless you spend at least a hundred rupees, you cannot even be counted among the players. Here, gulli-danda dyes you a true colour without needing any mordant of alum. But we have become so besotted with English things that we have grown to dislike everything of our own. In our schools every boy is charged three or four rupees a year merely as a games fee. It occurs to no one to have them play Indian games, which cost not a farthing. English games are for those who have money. Why should this burden be loaded onto poor boys' heads? Very well, there is a fear that a gulli may put out an eye — but is there no fear of cricket cracking a skull, rupturing a spleen, breaking a leg? If the scar of a gulli still marks my forehead to this day, I also have friends who have traded a walking-stick for a crutch. Well, that is a matter of taste. To me gulli remains dearer than every other game, and among the sweet memories of childhood, gulli is the sweetest of all. That slipping out of the house at dawn, that climbing trees to cut branches and fashion gullis and dandas, that eagerness, that absorption, those knots of players gathering, that batting and being made to field, those quarrels and scuffles, that guilelessness in which there was no distinction at all between touchable and untouchable, rich and poor, in which there was no room for the airs of the wealthy, for showing off, for pride — all that will be forgotten only when... when... The family is fuming, Father sits at the hearth venting his anger fiercely upon the rotis, Mother's chase only reaches as far as the doorway, but in their minds my dark future totters like a broken boat; and here I am, lost in the joy of making others field, with no thought of bathing, no thought of eating. The gulli is a tiny thing; but in it is packed the sweetness of every sweet in the world and the delight of every spectacle.

Among my playmates was a boy named Gaya. He must have been two or three years older than me — thin, lanky, with long slender fingers just like a monkey's, the same monkey-like quickness, the same quick temper. Whatever the gulli, he pounced on it the way a lizard pounces on insects. I do not know whether he had parents or not, where he lived, what he ate; but he was the champion of our gulli club. Whichever side he came over to was certain to win. Whenever we saw him approaching from a distance, we would run to welcome him and make him our partner.

One day it was just Gaya and I playing. He was fielding, I was batting; but it is a strange thing — we could stay absorbed all day making someone else field, while being made to field ourselves galled us even for a single minute. I tried every trick to wriggle free, tricks which, though not sanctioned by scripture on such occasions, are nevertheless forgivable; but Gaya would not release me without taking his turn.
I ran off toward home. Neither pleading nor persuasion had the least effect.
Gaya ran and caught hold of me, and brandishing his danda, said, 'Give me my turn before you go. You were bold enough making me field — why do you run off now that it's your turn?'
'If you make me field all day, must I field all day in return?'
'Yes, you'll have to field all day.'
'Should I not go to eat, not go to drink?'
'Yes! You cannot go anywhere without giving me my turn.'
'Am I your slave?'
'Yes, you are my slave.'
'I'm going home — let's see what you can do about it!'
'How will you go home? Is this some joke? You took a turn, you'll give a turn.'
'All right, yesterday I gave you a guava to eat. Give it back.'
'That's gone into my stomach.'
'Bring it out of your stomach — why did you eat my guava?'
'You gave me the guava, that's why I ate it. I didn't go begging you for it.'
'Until you give me back my guava, I won't give you your turn.'
I believed justice was on my side. After all, I must have had some selfish motive in giving him that guava — who deals with anyone without self-interest? Even alms are given for one's own sake. Once Gaya had eaten the guava, what right did he have to claim a turn from me? People swallow even blood-money and digest it just fine with a bribe. This fellow would simply digest my guava the same way. The guavas were five for a paisa, the kind Gaya's own father would never get to taste. This was sheer injustice.
Gaya, pulling me toward him, said, 'Come and give me my turn — I know nothing about your guava business.'
I had the strength of justice behind me. He stood planted on injustice. I wanted to wrench my hand free and run. He would not let me go. I hurled an abuse at him; he flung back a fiercer one, and not abuse alone — he landed a slap or two as well. I sank my teeth into him. He brought his danda down on my back. I began to cry. Gaya could not withstand this weapon of mine; he fled. I wiped away my tears at once, forgot the sting of the blow, and walked home laughing. That I, the son of the thanedar, had been beaten at the hands of a low-caste urchin, struck me even then as humiliating; but I complained to no one at home.

It was in those very days that Father was transferred from that place. I was so puffed up with the joy of seeing a new world that parting from my playmates caused me no grief at all. Father was unhappy — it had been a post of good income. Mother too was unhappy; things there had been cheap, and she had grown close with the women of the neighbourhood. But I could not contain myself for joy. I boasted to the other boys — houses like that were not to be found just anywhere. Such tall houses, that seemed to converse with the sky! At the English school there, if any master beat a boy, he would be jailed for it. My friends' wide eyes and astonished faces told me how high I had risen in their estimation. Children possess a power of turning falsehood into truth that we, who turn truth into falsehood, can scarcely comprehend. How envious the poor fellows were of me. It was as though they were saying: you are the fortunate one, brother — go; as for us, we must live and die in this same wretched village.

Twenty years went by. I passed as an engineer, and touring the same district, arrived at that very town and put up at the dak bungalow. The moment I saw the place, so many sweet memories of childhood stirred in my heart that I picked up my walking-stick and went out to stroll about the town. My eyes, like some thirsty traveller's, were restless to see those old playgrounds of my boyhood; but apart from the familiar name, nothing there was familiar any longer. Where there had been a ruin, solid brick houses now stood. Where the old banyan tree had been, there was now a lovely garden. The place had been utterly transformed. Had I not known its name and location, I would not even have recognised it. The stored, immortal memories of childhood stood with arms flung open, impatient to embrace those old friends; but that world had changed. I felt like clinging to that earth and weeping, saying: you have forgotten me! I still wish to see you as you once were.
Suddenly, in an open space, I saw two or three boys playing gulli-danda. For a moment I forgot myself entirely — forgot that I was a lofty officer, in sahib's trappings, wrapped in the mantle of authority and awe.
I went up and asked one of the boys, 'Tell me, son, does anyone named Gaya live here?'
One boy, gathering up the gulli-danda, said in a timid voice, 'Which Gaya? Gaya the tanner?'
I said, offhandedly, 'Yes, yes, that very one. If there's some man named Gaya here, it's probably him.'
'Yes, there is.'
'Could you call him here?'
The boy ran off, and in a moment appeared, bringing with him a black giant of a man, five cubits tall. I recognised him from a distance. I wanted to rush toward him and throw my arms around his neck; but on second thought, I held myself back.
I said, 'Well, Gaya, do you recognise me?'
Gaya bowed and offered a salute — 'Yes, my lord, why would I not recognise you? You've been keeping well, I trust?'
'Very well indeed. Tell me about yourself.'
'I'm the Deputy Sahib's groom.'
'And Matai, Mohan, Durga — where are they all? Any news of them?'
'Matai died, sir. Durga and Mohan have both become postmen. And you—'
'I am the district engineer now.'
'Your honour was always so clever.'
'Do you ever play gulli-danda now?'
Gaya looked at me with questioning eyes. 'What gulli-danda would I play now, my lord? There's no let-up from the business of filling one's belly.'
'Come, let the two of us play today. You'll bat, I'll field. You have one turn owed you from me — take it today.'
Gaya agreed only with great reluctance. He was, after all, a labourer worth a few coppers, and I a great officer — what match were the two of us for each other? The poor fellow was embarrassed, but I was no less embarrassed myself — not because I was going to play with Gaya, but because people would turn this into a spectacle, a curiosity, and a proper crowd would gather. In such a crowd, where would the joy of it remain? And yet I could not rest without playing. In the end it was settled that the two of us would go far from the settlement, to some solitary spot, and play there, where no one would sit and watch. We would play at our ease and relish, mouthful by mouthful, that sweetmeat of childhood. I brought Gaya along to the dak bungalow, and the two of us got into the motor-car and drove off toward the open fields, taking along an axe. I had put on a grave manner. But Gaya still seemed to be taking it all as a joke. Even so, there was no sign of eagerness or delight on his face. Perhaps he was lost in brooding over the gulf that had opened between the two of us.
I asked, 'Did you ever remember us, Gaya? Tell me truly.'
Gaya said, abashed, 'How could I dare remember you, my lord — what am I, after all? It was my fortune to have played with you for a few days once; beyond that, who am I to be counted?'
I said, somewhat sadly, 'But I have thought of you constantly, without fail. Do you remember that danda of yours, the one you swung and brought down on me?'
Gaya said with something like regret, 'That was childishness, my lord — don't remind me of it.'
'Ah, but it is the sweetest memory of my childhood! There was a savour in that blow of your danda that I find now neither in honour nor in wealth. There was such a sweetness in it that even today my heart turns sweet at the thought of it.'
By this time we had come out some three miles from the settlement. All around lay a deep hush. To the west, the Bhimtal spread away for miles, where once we used to come and pluck lotus blossoms and thread them into ear-ornaments. The Jeth evening was coming on, steeped in saffron. I sprang up into a tree and cut down a branch, and in no time the gulli and danda were made.
The game began. I set the gulli in the little trench and flicked it up. It flew past the danda without being struck. He shot out his hand as though catching a fish. The gulli fell behind him. This was the very same Gaya into whose hands the gulli used to come as if of its own accord — whether it went right or left, it would land straight in his palm, as if he cast some spell over gullis. New gulli, old gulli, small gulli, big gulli, pointed gulli, flat gulli — all came to him alike, as though there were a magnet in his hands that drew the gullis to itself. But today the gulli no longer held that affection for him. Then I began to make him field. I resorted to all manner of trickery, making up in cheating what I lacked in practice. Even when I missed my turn outright, I went on batting, although by the rules it should have been Gaya's turn. If a feeble stroke sent the gulli falling only a little way off, I would dash forward, pick it up myself, and strike it again. Gaya watched all these irregularities but said nothing, as though he had forgotten all the rules and laws of the game. How unerring his aim had once been! The gulli, leaving his hand, would fly straight and strike the danda with a ring. Once it left his hand, its business was to collide with the danda; but today the gulli would not strike the danda at all. Sometimes it went right, sometimes left, sometimes forward, sometimes back.
After half an hour of fielding, the gulli at last struck the danda once. I cheated — I claimed the gulli had not struck the danda, that it had passed quite close by, but had not touched it.
Gaya showed not the slightest sign of displeasure.
'It must not have struck it.'
'If it had struck the danda, would I have cheated?'
'No, brother — as if you would ever cheat!'
In childhood, he would never have let me get away with such a fraud and lived to tell of it — this very Gaya would have been at my throat. But today I was deceiving him so easily. What a fool — he has forgotten everything.
Suddenly the gulli struck the danda again, and struck it so hard it rang out like a gunshot. Faced with such proof, I did not this time have the nerve to cheat any further — but why not, just once more, try to pass off the truth as a lie? What did I have to lose? If he accepted it, so much the better; if not, I would only have to field for a few more strokes. I could plead the failing light and quickly get out of it. Who else would come to claim a turn against me anyway!
Gaya cried out in the exultation of victory, 'It struck! It struck! It rang out clean!'
I said, feigning ignorance, 'Did you see it strike? I didn't see it.'
'It rang out clear as anything, my lord!'
'And what if it struck some brick instead?'
How that sentence came out of my mouth at that moment, I myself am astonished to this day. To deny this truth was as absurd as calling day night. Both of us had seen the gulli strike the danda hard; yet Gaya accepted what I said.
'Yes, it must have struck some brick. If it had struck the danda, it wouldn't have made so loud a sound.'
I began making him field once more. But after cheating so blatantly and so openly, pity for Gaya's simplicity began to stir in me; so when the gulli struck the danda a third time, I decided, with great magnanimity, to grant him his turn.
Gaya said, 'It's grown dark now, brother — leave it for tomorrow.' I thought: tomorrow there will be plenty of time, and there's no telling how long he might make me field, so it would be better to settle the matter right now.
'No, no. There's still plenty of light. Take your turn now.'
'The gulli won't even be visible.'
'Never mind that.'
Gaya began to bat. But he was now utterly out of practice. He tried twice to strike a long shot, but missed both times. In under a minute he had used up his whole turn. Poor fellow had fielded for a full hour, yet lost his turn in a single minute. I gave proof of the largeness of my heart.
'Play one more turn. You missed on the very first stroke.'
'No, brother, it's dark now.'
'You've lost your touch.'
'Where do I ever get the time to play, brother?'
The two of us climbed back into the motor-car and reached the halting-place just as the lamps were being lit. As we went, Gaya said, 'There'll be gulli-danda here tomorrow. All the old players will play. Will you come too? Whenever you're free, just say the word and I'll call the players together.'
I fixed the evening as my time and went the next day to watch the match. There was a group of some ten men. Several turned out to be companions of my boyhood; most were young men I could not recognise. The game began. I sat in the motor-car and watched the spectacle. Today, watching Gaya's play, his sheer skill, I was astonished. When he struck a long shot, the gulli seemed to hold converse with the sky. That hesitation of yesterday, that faltering, that half-heartedness — none of it was there today. What had been mere boyish skill had today attained full maturity. Had he made me field like this yesterday, I would certainly have been reduced to tears. Struck by his danda, the gulli would carry the news two hundred yards away.

Among the batsmen, one young man tried some trickery. In his own reckoning he had caught the gulli on the fly. Gaya maintained that it had touched the ground before bouncing up. Over this the two nearly came to blows. The young man backed down. Seeing Gaya's face flush with anger, he took fright. Had he not backed down, there would certainly have been a scuffle. I was not playing; but watching this game of theirs, I found again that same boyhood joy we used to feel when, forgetting everything else, we lost ourselves in play. Now I understood — yesterday Gaya had not really played with me at all; he had only made a pretence of playing. He had regarded me as an object of pity. I had cheated, I had played foul; yet he never showed the least anger, because he was not playing a game at all — he was only playing me along, humouring me. He did not wish to make me field and wear me to a pulp. I am an officer now. This officer's rank has become a wall standing between him and me. Now I can command his deference, his courtesy — but not his fellowship. In boyhood I had been his equal; there was no difference between us at all. Having attained this rank, I am now fit only for his pity. He no longer thinks of me as his match. He has grown great; I have grown small.
