A procession for full self-rule was passing through the streets. Some young men, some old men, some mere boys, carrying flags and pennants, singing Vande Mataram, came past the Mall. On both sides stood walls of onlookers, as though this band of marchers were no concern of theirs, as though it were nothing but a spectacle, and their only business was to stand and watch.

Shambhunath, standing on the raised platform in front of his shop, said to his neighbour Deenadayal, 'Every one of them is walking into the jaws of death. Up ahead, the mounted troop will beat them and chase them off.'
Deenadayal said, 'Mahatmaji himself has gone soft in the head. If self-rule could be won by taking out processions, we would have had it long ago. And look who's in this procession -- mere boys, loafers, hotheads. Not a single important man of the city.'
Maiku stood by with a string of sandals and slippers hung round his neck. Hearing the two merchants talk this way, he laughed.
Shambhu asked, 'Why are you laughing, Maiku? You seem in fine spirits today.'
Maiku said, 'I laughed at what you said, that no important man is in the procession. Why should important men come to a procession? What comfort are they lacking under this rule? They live in bungalows and mansions, ride about in motorcars, dine at feasts with the sahibs -- what trouble do they have? It's we who are dying, we who don't even know where our next roti is coming from. Right now some of them will be playing tennis, some sipping tea, some listening to songs on the gramophone, some taking a stroll in the park -- why would they come here to take the police's whip? That's a fine thing you've said!'
Shambhu said, 'What would you understand of these matters, Maiku. When a handful of important men lead a cause, even the government takes notice of it. What weight will a crowd of loafers and boys carry in the eyes of the officials?'
Maiku looked at him with a glance that seemed to say, 'You haven't been given sole rights to understanding these matters,' and said, 'It's we who make important men and break them, or is it someone else? How many people whom nobody used to even ask after have become important men of our own making, and now they ride about in motorcars and think us beneath them. Such is the way of men's fortunes -- the moment one rises a little, he turns his eyes away from us. Our important man is the one who goes about barefoot in a loincloth, who carries his life in the palm of his hand to better our condition. We care nothing for any other important man. To tell the truth, it's these very important men who have ruined us. The government hands them some fine position, and that's all it takes -- they start singing its praises.'

Deenadayal said, 'The new daroga is a real butcher. The moment they reach the crossroads he'll fall on them, whip in hand. Just watch, then, how they all turn tail and run. It'll be a fine sight.'
The procession, intoxicated with the passion for freedom, reached the crossroads and found ahead of it a troop of mounted men and constables barring the way.

Suddenly Daroga Birbal Singh spurred his horse forward and came in front of the procession and said, 'You people have no permission to go any further.'
The old leader of the procession, Ibrahim Ali, stepped forward and said, 'I assure you, there will be no disorder of any kind. We have not come out to loot shops or smash motorcars. Our purpose is far nobler than that.'
Birbal said, 'My orders are that the procession not be allowed to go beyond this point.'
Ibrahim said, 'Would you not just ask your superiors?'
Birbal said, 'I see no need for that.'
Ibrahim said, 'Then we shall sit right here. When you people leave, we shall go on our way.'

Birbal said, 'There is no permission even to stand here. You will have to go back.'
Ibrahim said gravely, 'We shall not go back. Neither you nor anyone else has any right to stop us. If you wish to stop us by the strength of your horsemen, your bayonets, and your guns, then stop us; but you cannot turn us back. Who knows when that day will come when we, our own brothers, will flatly refuse to carry out such orders, whose sole intent is to keep our people bound in the chains of servitude.'

Birbal was a graduate. His father had been a police superintendent. Authority ran in his very veins. In the eyes of his officers he was held in high regard. He was a strikingly fair man, with blue eyes and light brown hair, a man of commanding presence. Perhaps when he put on his coat and set a hat upon his head, he forgot that he too was a son of this soil. Perhaps he had come to think of himself as one of the ruling race; but the scorn that filled Ibrahim's words shamed him for a moment; yet the situation was delicate. If he let the procession pass, he would be called to account; if he let it stand there, there was no telling how long it might remain; caught in this dilemma, he saw the D.S.P. approaching on horseback. Now was no time for thought. This was the very moment to show his mettle. He drew the baton from his belt, spurred his horse, and began to drive it into the procession. The moment the other riders saw him, they too began driving their horses into the crowd. Ibrahim stood in front of the daroga's horse. A baton came down on his head with such force that his eyes swam. He could not remain standing. He clutched his head and sank down. At that very instant the daroga's horse reared up on its hind legs, and Ibrahim, sitting on the ground, came under its hooves. The procession still stood in silence. Seeing Ibrahim fall, several men rushed forward to lift him up, but none could get through. All the while the riders' batons were coming down without mercy. People warded off the blows with their bare hands and stood unshaken. With every passing moment it grew harder for them not to be swept into violence themselves. If blows and insult were all that awaited them, why should they not try to break through this wall of men? It occurred to them that the eyes of lakhs of people in the city were fixed upon them. If they turned back now, flag in hand, with what face would they ever speak the name of freedom again? But not one of them thought of fleeing to save his own life. This was no band of belly-worshippers, no troop of hired hacks. This was an organised body of true volunteers of freedom, of men mad for liberty, who understood their responsibilities well. Blood streamed from many heads; many hands were bruised and torn. In one surge they could have broken through the ranks of the horsemen, but their feet were bound in fetters -- the fetters of principle, of faith, of ideal. For ten or twelve minutes the rain of batons continued in this way, and the people stood their ground in silence.

Word of this violence reached the bazaar in an instant. Ibrahim had been trampled by a horse, several men had been injured, several had broken arms; yet those people would not turn back, and the police would not let them go forward.

Shambhu stood silent for a minute. Then, all at once, he too pulled down his shop's shutter and said, 'One day we must die anyway -- whatever is to happen, let it happen. After all, those people are giving their lives for all of us.' In no time most of the shops had closed. The very people who ten minutes earlier had been watching the spectacle came running from every direction, and a vast body of thousands of men set out towards the scene. This was a crowd of men maddened, drunk with the fever of violence, who cared nothing for principle or ideal -- men ready not merely to die, but to kill. Many carried sticks in their hands; many had their pockets full of stones. No one spoke to another, no one asked anything. Every single one of them simply surged forward with a fixed resolve in his heart, as though a storm-cloud were rolling in.

The moment the horsemen caught sight of this multitude in the distance, a stir ran through their ranks. The colour drained from Birbal Singh's face. The D.S.P. drove his car forward. Raining blows on votaries of peace and non-violence was one thing; facing a maddened crowd was quite another. The riders and constables began edging back.

A single sign was enough. Like a disciplined army, the moment the order came the people turned back. In a trice a stretcher was made from the poles of the flags, from turban-cloths and handkerchiefs. They laid Ibrahim upon it and turned back; but had they truly been defeated? If some are content to consider them defeated, let them be content; but in truth they had won a victory that would mark an age. They knew that their struggle was with their own brothers, whose interests, because of circumstance, differed from their own. They had no wish to make enemies of them. Nor, again, did they wish the bazaars of the city to catch fire with loot and riot, and their righteous struggle to end in plundered shops and broken heads. The brightest sign of their victory was this: that they had won the sympathy of the people. The very people who had laughed at them before had come out, at the sight of their patience and courage, to help them. This change of heart is our true victory. We have no need to fight anyone; our sole purpose is to win the sympathy of the people, to change their hearts. The day we reach that goal, that very day the sun of self-rule will rise.

Three days had passed. Birbal Singh sat in his room drinking tea, and his wife Mitthan Bai stood before him with their infant in her arms.

Birbal Singh said, 'What was I to do at that moment? The D.S.P. was standing right behind me. If I had let them pass, I would have brought trouble down on my own head.'
Mitthan Bai shook her head and said, 'You could at least have seen to it that no batons were used on them. Is it your job to beat men with sticks? At most you could have stopped them. If tomorrow you're given the job of flogging criminals, I suppose you'll enjoy that no end, won't you?'
Birbal Singh said in embarrassment, 'You simply don't understand the matter.'
Mitthan Bai said, 'I understand it perfectly well. The D.S.P. was standing behind you. You must have thought, such a chance to show my mettle might never come again. Do you think there wasn't a single decent man in that crowd? There were men in it who could have kept people like you as their servants. In learning, most of them were probably your betters, yet you were raining sticks on them, trampling them under your horse's hooves -- what fine valour, indeed!'
Birbal said, with a shameless laugh, 'The D.S.P. has noted down my name. Really!'
The daroga had imagined that this piece of news would please Mitthan Bai. Decency and good conduct are, after all, only surface things -- spoken with the tongue, not felt in the heart. Self-interest sits in the depths of the heart. That alone is worth serious thought.
But not a trace of pleasure showed on Mitthan Bai's face -- perhaps in her, surface things had gone deeper. She said, 'No doubt he has noted it down, and perhaps you'll get your promotion soon; but what use is a promotion won by staining your hands with the blood of the innocent! This is not the reward for your mettle, it is the price of your treachery to your own country. The true reward for your mettle will come the day you track down some murderer, or save some drowning man.'
Just then a constable, standing on the veranda, called out, 'Huzoor, I've brought this envelope.' Birbal Singh went out, took the envelope, drew out the official letter within, and began to read it. When he had finished, he set it down on the table.
Mitthan asked, 'Has the promotion order come, then?'
Birbal Singh said, abashed, 'You will have your joke! Another procession is to be taken out today, and I've been ordered to accompany it.'
Mitthan said, 'Then your luck's in -- get yourself ready. Today you'll have just such game to hunt again. Do show off your hand well! The D.S.P. is sure to be there too. This time you'll be made inspector, surely!'
Birbal Singh frowned and said, 'Sometimes you say the most senseless things. Suppose I go and simply stand there quietly -- what would come of it? I'd be thought useless, and someone else would be sent in my place. And if the least suspicion arose that I had any sympathy for the swarajists, I'd be finished for good. If I weren't dismissed outright, I'd at least be hauled up in front of the line. A man does as the world around him does. I may not be a wise man, but I know this much -- these people are striving only to redeem their country and their people. I also know the government wants to crush this idea utterly. I'm not such an ass as to take pride in a life of servitude; but I am at the mercy of circumstance.'
The sound of a band reached his ears. Birbal Singh went out and asked about it. It turned out that the swarajists' procession was passing by. He quickly put on his uniform, tied his turban, tucked a pistol into his pocket, and came out. In a moment his horse was ready. The constables were already waiting. All of them set off at the double towards the procession.

Marching at the double, the men reached the procession in about fifteen minutes. At the sight of them, from countless throats rose the sound of 'Vande Mataram', as though thunder had rolled across a bank of clouds, and then a hush fell. How different this procession was from that one! That had been a procession celebrating self-rule; this was a procession of mourning for a martyr. After three days of raging fever and agony, that life had come to its end today -- a life that had never craved position, never bowed its head before authority. In his dying hour he had left instructions that his body be bathed in the Ganga and buried, and that the flag of self-rule be planted upon his grave. The moment news of his death spread, a veil of mourning seemed to fall over the whole city. Whoever heard it started as though struck by a bullet, and ran at once to see him one last time. Every shop in the bazaar closed; not a tonga or an ikka was to be found anywhere, as though the city had been plundered. In no time the whole city had poured out. When the bier was lifted, a hundred and twenty-five thousand people walked with it. There was not an eye that was not red with tears.

Birbal Singh ordered his constables and horsemen to keep a distance of five yards apiece as they moved along with the procession, and fell back himself. For some fifty yards in the rearmost ranks walked the women. The daroga glanced towards them. In the very first row he caught sight of Mitthan Bai. Birbal could not believe it. He looked again, closely -- it was indeed she. Mitthan looked towards him once and turned her eyes away; but in that single glance there was such reproach, such shame, such anguish, such loathing, that a shiver ran through Birbal Singh's body from head to foot. Never in his own eyes had he seemed so petty, so weak, so despicable.

Suddenly a young woman looked towards the daroga and said, 'Kotwal sahib, mind you don't set your batons on us too! The very sight of you frightens me.'
Another said, 'Wasn't it some brother of yours who struck down this brave man at the crossroads on the Mall that day!'
Mitthan said, 'It was no brother of his -- it was he himself.'
Voices rose from among the women -- 'Oh, so this is the very gentleman? Greetings to you, sir! It is by your grace alone that we too have come to stand here today, to behold your baton with our own eyes!'
Birbal shot a spear of a glance at Mitthan Bai, but said nothing aloud.

A third woman then said, 'We shall hold a gathering and garland you with victory, and sing your praises.' A fourth said, 'You look every bit an Englishman -- that's why you're so fair.'
An old woman, her eyes blazing, said, 'If such a son had been born of my womb, I would have wrung his neck.'
A young woman rebuked her, saying, 'What a thing to say, mother! Even a dog is faithful to the salt it has eaten -- and this is a man.'
The old woman said irritably, 'Slaves of the belly -- ah, the belly! The belly!'
At this several of the women turned on the old woman, and the poor thing, abashed, said, 'Why, I'm not really saying anything -- but what kind of man is it who goes blind chasing his own self-interest?'
Birbal Singh could bear to hear no more. He spurred his horse and fell back several yards from the procession. When a man shames us, anger rises in us. When women shame us, it breeds only self-loathing. Birbal Singh no longer had the courage to go near those women again. Anger rose in him against his officers. Why was he, of all people, posted again and again to this kind of duty? There were other men too -- why weren't they brought here? Was he really the most worthless of them all? Was he really the most heartless of them all?
How contemptible, how cowardly, Mitthon must be thinking me in her heart right now! Perhaps if someone struck me down this very moment, she wouldn't even open her mouth. Perhaps she'd be glad in her heart, thinking, good, it served him right. If anyone were to go and tell the sahib that Birbal Singh's wife had come out in the procession, I'd be done for entirely. Mitthon knows this, understands it, and still she came out and stood there. She didn't even ask me. She has nothing to worry about, that's why such notions occur to her. Everyone there is carefree -- college boys, schoolboys, labourers, professionals -- what do they have to fear! It's we who must suffer, we who have wives and children, who must mind our honour and standing. And all of them were glaring at me as if they'd devour me.

The procession moved on through the main streets of the city. On both sides, on rooftops, on balconies, on railings, in the trees, stood walls of onlookers. Today it seemed to Birbal Singh that a new vigour, a new fervour, a new pride shone on their faces. Vigour on the faces of the old, fervour on those of the young, and pride on the faces of the women. This was the joy of walking the path to self-rule. Their journey's goal was no longer unknown, no wandering hither and thither like men who had lost their way, no bowing the head and weeping like the downtrodden. The golden summit of freedom gleamed in the far sky. It seemed as though the people cared nothing for the ditches and thickets along the way, and every one of them was eager only to reach that golden goal.

By around eleven o'clock the procession reached the bank of the river. The bier was set down, and the people went to bathe the body in the Ganga. On his cold, still, pallid forehead the mark of the baton stood out clearly. The blood had dried and turned black. The great locks of hair on his head had clumped together with the dried blood, like the bristles of a painter's brush. Several thousand men gathered in a circle for one last sight of the martyr. Birbal Singh stood on his horse behind them. He too caught sight of the mark of the baton. His soul reproached him bitterly. He could not bear to look at the body. He turned his face away. This was the very man whose sight, whose dust from whose feet upon their foreheads, lakhs of people were now longing for -- and I dealt him such an insult! His soul was admitting to him now that in that merciless blow there had not been the faintest trace of duty -- only self-interest, only the lust to display his mettle and the craving to please his officers. Thousands of eyes, full of anger, were turned upon him; but he could not summon the courage to look back at them.

A constable came up and offered his praise: 'Huzoor's hand landed hard. His skull is still split open. It's opened everyone's eyes.'
Birbal brushed him off: 'I don't call this my valour -- I call it my baseness.'
The constable flattered him again: 'He was a great rebel, huzoor!'
Birbal said sharply, 'Be quiet! Do you even know what a rebel is? Those are called rebels who commit dacoity, who steal, who murder; not those who carry their lives in the palm of their hand for the good of their country. It is our misfortune that we are opposing the very men we ought to be helping. This is not a matter to be proud of and pleased about -- it is a matter for shame, and for tears.'
The bathing was finished. The procession set off from there once more.

It was two o'clock by the time the body had been laid to rest beneath the earth and people began to turn back. Mitthan Bai walked some way with the other women, but at Queen's Park she came to a halt. She had no wish to go home. That worn, wounded, blood-stained body seemed to sit deep within her, reproaching her still. Her heart had grown so estranged from her husband that she no longer even wished to reproach him. She had no faith that anything but fear could ever touch so selfish a man.

She sat a long while on the grass in the park, lost in thought, but could not settle on what her duty now was. She could go to her mother's house; but in a month or two she would have to come back to this very home again. No -- she would not become dependent on anyone. Could she not earn her own living? She pictured to herself difficulties of every kind, but today, she knew not from where, such strength had come into her soul. Merely dwelling on these imagined difficulties now seemed to her a kind of weakness.

Suddenly the thought of Ibrahim Ali's aged widow came to her. She had heard they had no sons. The poor woman would be sitting alone, weeping. There would be no one near to offer her comfort. She set off towards their house. She had already asked the way from the women beside her. As she walked, her mind kept turning over -- how would she meet her, what would she say to her, in what words would she console her? Lost in these thoughts, she arrived at Ibrahim Ali's house. It stood in a lane, clean and simple; but grief hung heavy over its doorway. With a pounding heart she stepped inside. There, in the veranda before her, on a cot, sat the old woman, whose husband had today offered up his life on the altar of freedom. Standing before her, dressed in plain clothes, his eyes brimming with tears, a young man was saying something to the old woman. Mitthan started at the sight of that young man -- it was Birbal Singh.

She asked, in astonishment mixed with anger, 'How do you come to be here?'

On Mitthan's fair face today there shone a radiance of pride, of joy, and of love beyond all telling. It seemed as though the sorrows of all her lives, birth after birth, had been wiped away; as though she had been freed from the bonds of care and worldly attachment.
