Who doesn't crave getting rich quickly? In those days, when lottery tickets came out, my friend Vikram's father, his uncle, his mother, and his brother all bought a ticket each. Who could say whose fortune would favor them? Whoever's name it came in, the money would stay in the family anyway!
But things were not so simple for Vikram. If the money came in someone else's name, who would think to ask him? At most they'd hand him ten or five thousand. And what could he do with that little? He had grand plans for his life. First of all, he meant to travel the whole world, every corner of it. Peru and Brazil and Timbuktu and Honolulu — all of these were on his itinerary. He was not the sort to fly off for a month or two like a passing storm and come rushing back. He wanted to linger for days on end in each place, studying the way of life, the customs, and all the rest, and then write a great book of his world travels. After that he meant to build a vast library, in which the finest writings from all over the world would be gathered. He was prepared to spend up to two lakh rupees on the library alone — a bungalow, a car, and furniture were mere trifles by comparison. If the money came in his father's name or his uncle's, there would be no question of more than five thousand for him; if it came in his mother's name, he might get twenty thousand; but if it came in his elder brother's name, he wouldn't get so much as a farthing. He was a proud man. To take anything from his family as charity or reward felt to him like an insult. He used to say — brother, better to drown oneself in some ditch than hold out a hand before anyone. When a man can carve out no place for himself in this world, he ought simply to depart from it. He was quite without means. Who in the house would give him money for a lottery ticket, and how could he even ask? After much thought, he said — why don't the two of us buy a ticket together, in partnership?

The proposal appealed to me too. In those days I was a schoolmaster, earning twenty rupees a month, and even on that I barely scraped by. Buying a ten-rupee ticket was, for me, like buying an elephant. Still, by cutting out milk and ghee and refreshments and every other extra expense for a month, I might just manage to scrape together five rupees. Even so, my heart quailed. If only some extra sum could come from somewhere, my courage might rise a little.

Vikram said, 'Say the word and I'll sell my ring. I'll tell them it slipped off my finger.'
The ring was worth no less than ten rupees. A whole ticket could have come out of it — but if I could get a half-share in the ticket without spending anything at all, where was the harm?
Suddenly Vikram spoke again — 'But look here, you'll have to pay cash. I won't go halves without taking five rupees in hand.'
Now propriety came back to me. I said, 'No, that's a bad idea — the theft will come to light, and you'll be shamed, and I'll get scolded right along with you.'

In the end it was decided that our old books would be sold off at some second-hand bookshop, and a ticket bought with the money. We owned nothing more useless than those books. We had both passed our matriculation together, and seeing that even those who had gone on to take degrees, and ruined their eyes over books, and squandered their families' money, were still cooling their heels looking for work, we had called a halt right there. I became a schoolmaster and Vikram took to loafing about. Our old books were now good for nothing but termites. We had already licked out of them whatever there was to lick, drawn out their whole essence — now it made no difference to us whether rats gnawed them or termites. That day the two of us dragged them out of the lumber-room, dusted them off, and tied them into one big bundle. Being a schoolmaster, I was too embarrassed to sell books at some bookseller's shop — everyone knew me there. So this errand fell to Vikram, and within half an hour he came bounding back with a ten-rupee note in hand, leaping with joy. I had never seen him so pleased. The books were worth no less than forty rupees, but that ten rupees felt, just then, like money found lying in the road. Now we would have a half-share in the ticket. Ten lakh rupees would come to us — five lakh my share, five lakh Vikram's. We were quite lost in this happy arithmetic.

I said, putting on an air of contentment, 'Five lakh is no small sum, you know.'
Vikram was not so easily satisfied. He said, 'Five lakh — right now even five hundred would be a fortune to us, brother. But my life's plans will have to change all the same. My travel scheme can't be given up. The library, though — that's gone.'
I objected — 'Surely you won't spend more than two lakh on your travels?'
'No indeed — the budget for it is three and a half lakh. It's a seven-year plan. That's only fifty thousand rupees a year.'
'Say four thousand a month, then. I should think you could live in great comfort on two thousand.'
Vikram flared up. 'I mean to live in style — not like a beggar.'

10 'You could live in style on two thousand as well.'

'Unless you give me two lakh out of your share, the library will never get built.'
'There's no need for your library to be the finest in the city.'
'I intend to make it the finest, and nothing less.'

'That's your prerogative; but you won't get anything out of my money. Look at my needs. Your family has plenty of property. You have no burden on your shoulders, while I carry the whole household on mine. Two sisters to marry off, two brothers to educate, a new house to build. I've decided I'll deposit the whole sum straight in the bank and live off the interest. I'll attach such conditions to it that no one will be able to touch the principal even after I'm gone.'
Vikram said with an air of sympathy, 'Yes, in that case it would be unjust of me to ask you for anything. Well, I'll just have to bear the hardship myself. But the bank interest rates have fallen so low these days.'
We looked into the interest rates of several banks, the fixed deposits as well as the savings accounts. The rates were indeed very low. It seemed pointless to deposit money at two or two-and-a-half per cent. Why not start a money-lending business instead? Then Vikram wouldn't go travelling either — the two of us would run the firm together, and once some capital had accumulated, he could make his journey. Money-lending would fetch good interest, and we'd have standing and authority besides. Of course, no one should be given money without solid security, however respectable the borrower might seem. And why lend even on mere surety? We would take property as mortgage before handing out any money. That way there would be no risk at all.
This stage too was settled. Now the question arose of whose name should go on the ticket. Vikram insisted strongly that it be his; if his name did not go on it, he said, he wouldn't buy the ticket at all. Seeing no other way, I agreed — and without putting anything down in writing, which was to cause me a great deal of trouble later on.

One by one, the days of waiting began to pass. At the first light of dawn our eyes would go straight to the calendar. My house stood next to Vikram's. Before I left for school and after I came home from it, the two of us would sit together weaving our various schemes, always in whispers, so that no one might overhear. We wanted to keep the secret of our ticket hidden. What astonishment it would cause people when this secret turned into truth! We were not willing to give up the dramatic pleasure of that scene.

One day, in the course of talk, the subject of marriage came up. Vikram said, with philosophic gravity, 'Brother, I don't mean to saddle myself with the tangle of marriage. Nothing but needless worry and heartache. A great deal of money would go merely in pampering a wife.'
I disagreed. 'Yes, that's true enough, but what joy is there in life until one has a companion to share its joys and sorrows? I'm not so averse to married life. Yes, I want a companion who will stay by my side to the very end, and such a companion can be no one but a wife.'

Vikram spoke with more than his usual sharpness. 'Well, to each his own view. You're welcome to your wife, and welcome to trailing after her like a dog, and welcome to thinking your children the greatest treasure in the world and God's greatest mercy. As for me, I mean to stay free — go where I please, when I please, fly off when I please, and come home when I please. None of this business of having a watchman perched on your head at all hours. Come home a little late and at once you're called to account — where were you till now? Step out anywhere and at once the question comes — where are you off to? And if by some misfortune your wife happens to come along too, then there's no road left open to you except drowning yourself. No, brother, I haven't the least sympathy for you. Your child catches the smallest cold and off you go, running like mad to the homeopath. A little while later, once you've aged a bit, your own sons start wishing you'd depart from this world so they can go off and enjoy themselves. Given the chance, they'd poison you and put it about that you'd died of cholera. I'm not getting caught in that trap.'

Kunti came in just then. She was Vikram's little sister, about eleven years old, in the sixth class and forever failing it. Very pert, very saucy! She flung the door open with such a bang that the two of us jumped to our feet, startled.
Vikram said crossly, 'You're a real little devil, Kunti — who called you here?'
Kunti cast her eyes around the room like a detective and said, 'What do you two keep talking about, sitting here always with the door shut? Whenever I look, you're sitting right here — never going anywhere for a stroll, never off to see a show. You must be conjuring up some magic spell.'
Vikram seized her by the neck and shook her, saying, 'Yes, we're conjuring up a spell to find you a bridegroom who'll lay five strokes of the whip on you, counted out sharp, every single day!'
Kunti climbed onto his back and said, 'I'll marry a bridegroom who'll stand before me wagging his tail. I'll toss him leaf-plates of sweets and he'll lick them clean. If he so much as whimpers, I'll box his ears warm for him. When Amma gets her lottery money, she'll give me fifty thousand — then I'll live in peace. I pray to Thakurji for Amma morning and evening both. Amma says the prayers of unmarried girls are never in vain. Something in my heart tells me Amma is bound to get the money.'

I remembered how once, when I had gone to my grandparents' village, there was a drought on. The month of Bhadon had come, but not a drop of rain had fallen. So the villagers had taken up a collection and given a feast to all the unmarried girls of the village. And on the very third day after, the rain had come down in torrents. There must indeed be some power in the prayers of maidens.

I looked at Vikram meaningfully, and Vikram looked at me. In that single glance we consulted each other and reached our decision. Vikram said to Kunti, 'Listen, there's something we want to tell you — you won't breathe a word to anyone, will you? No, of course not, you're such a good girl, you'd never tell. This time I'll teach you well and get you through your exams. The thing is, the two of us have also bought a lottery ticket. Pray to God for us too — and if we win, we'll have fine jewellery made for you. Truly!'

Kunti didn't believe it. We swore oaths. She began putting on airs. Only when we promised to deck her out from head to foot in gold and diamonds did she agree to say prayers on our behalf.

But though her stomach could digest maunds of sweets, this small secret it could not hold down. She ran straight inside, and within a moment the news had spread through the whole house. Now everyone you looked at was scolding Vikram — his mother, his uncle, his father — whether out of genuine concern for him or some other feeling, who could say. 'Sitting idle, you get nothing but foolish notions into your head. Might as well have thrown the money straight into the river. So many people in this house had already bought tickets — what need was there for you to buy one? Wouldn't you have got a share out of theirs anyway? And you too, Master sahib — an utter simpleton. What good sense will you ever teach the boy, when you're the one leading him to ruin?'
Vikram, after all, was the darling son. What more could they say to him? If he took offence and skipped a meal or two in a sulk, that alone would bring the house down. So the whole storm of anger fell on me instead — it was my company, they said, that was spoiling the boy.

The old saying about it being easy to preach to others came before my eyes. I remembered an incident from my own childhood. It was Holi. A bottle of liquor had been sent for. My uncle happened to be visiting at the time. I crept into a storeroom, poured a gulp of the liquor into a glass, and drank it down. My throat was still burning and my eyes still red when my uncle walked into the storeroom and caught me as if I'd been seized breaking into a house. He scolded me so severely that my heart shrivelled up like a dried date. My mother scolded me too, and so did my father — I had to quench their fires of anger with my tears. And that very afternoon, my uncle himself, gone mad with drink, began singing, then weeping, then hurling abuse at my mother, then rushing to strike my grandfather when he tried to stop him, and in the end lay sprawled senseless on the ground, having vomited all over it.

Vikram's father, the elder Thakur sahib, and his uncle, the younger Thakur sahib, had both been thoroughgoing materialists — men who mocked prayer and worship, out-and-out atheists. But now both of them had turned devout and God-fearing. The elder Thakur sahib went every morning to bathe in the Ganga, and after making the rounds of the temples, came home at noon with his whole body smeared in sandal paste. The younger Thakur sahib bathed at home in hot water, and despite being crippled with gout, had taken to writing out the name of Ram. Once the sun was well up he would set off for the park and feed flour to the ants. As soon as evening fell, the two brothers would go and sit in their family shrine and listen, rapt, to the recitation of the Bhagavat until midnight. Vikram's elder brother Prakash had come to place greater faith in holy men and ascetics; he wandered from monastery to monastery, haunting the akharas and huts of sadhus. And their mother had no occupation from dawn to midnight but bathing, worship, and fasting. Even at her age she had once been fond of cigars, but these days she had turned into a complete ascetic. People are wrong to condemn desire so freely. For my part, I have come to believe that this devotion and faith and love of religion in us springs from nothing but our own greed, our own craving. Our piety rests entirely on the strength of our self-interest. That craving could work such a transformation on the human mind and understanding was, for me, an altogether new discovery. The two of us, too, would go about questioning astrologers and pandits, and make ourselves miserable in the process.

As the day of the lottery drew nearer, our peace of mind kept slipping away. My thoughts were forever tethered to that one point. Of my own accord, for no reason at all, a doubt began to creep in — what if Vikram refused to give me my share? What if he flatly denied that I had ever had a share in the ticket at all? There was no paper, no other proof — everything rested on Vikram's honesty alone. Let his honesty waver even slightly, and I was finished. I could complain nowhere, I could not even open my mouth about it. And even if I said something now, what good would it do? If his intentions had already gone crooked, he would deny it right away; and if they hadn't, then merely voicing this suspicion would wound him to the heart. He wasn't that kind of person. But then, brother, it's hard to keep one's honesty intact once wealth comes within reach! The money hadn't even arrived yet — what does it cost to be honest at a time like this? The real test would come only when ten lakh rupees were actually in hand. I probed my own conscience — if the ticket had been in my name and I had won the ten lakh, would I have handed over half the money to Vikram without so much as a murmur? Who can say for certain; but it seemed far more likely that I would have stalled and hedged, saying — you only lent me five rupees, take ten for it, take a hundred, what more do you want? No — but no, I could never have been so dishonest as that.

The next day, as the two of us sat looking over the newspaper, Vikram suddenly said, 'If our ticket does come up, I'll be sorry I went halves with you for nothing.'

He smiled with an air of innocence, but this was a glimpse of his true soul, which he was trying to hide behind a screen of jest.

Startled, I said, 'Indeed! But couldn't I feel the very same sorrow, by that reasoning?'

'But the ticket is in my name, isn't it?'

'What difference does that make?'

'But it's very possible indeed. Five lakh! Just think of it — it's enough to turn anyone's head.'
'Well then, brother, it's better to be safe now — let's put it down in writing. Why should this doubt remain at all?'
Vikram laughed. 'You're a terrible doubter, my friend! I was only testing you. As if such a thing could ever happen! Five lakh, five crore — whatever the sum, God willing, I'll never let it disturb my honesty.'
But I could put no faith at all in these assurances of his. A doubt had lodged itself in my mind and would not leave. I said, 'I know very well that your honesty could never waver — but what harm can there be in putting it down in writing?'

I thought — never mind that; a plain, unstamped document wouldn't let me take any legal action anyway. But at least I would have in hand the means to shame him, to disgrace him, to prove him dishonest before everyone. And if a man had no fear of being disgraced in the eyes of the world, there's no telling what he mightn't do. The fear of dishonour is, in its own way, no less powerful a check than the fear of the law. I said, 'A plain sheet of paper will satisfy me well enough.'

Now I was certain — Vikram's honesty had already turned crooked. Otherwise what possible objection could there be to writing out a plain paper? I said angrily, 'Your intentions have already gone bad, even now.'

Just then the sound of a quarrel from the drawing room caught my attention. This was where the two Thakurs usually sat. Between them there existed the kind of friendship one finds only among ideal brothers — Ram and Lakshman themselves could hardly have been closer. A sharp exchange was unthinkable; I had never even heard them disagree. Whatever the elder Thakur said was law for the younger, and the elder Thakur, for his part, never spoke without first gauging the younger one's wishes. The two of us were astonished. We went and stood at the door of the drawing room. Both brothers had risen from their chairs and were standing, having even advanced a step or two towards each other, eyes red, faces twisted, brows knotted, fists clenched. It looked as though nothing short of blows would settle the matter.

The younger Thakur, seeing us, stepped back and said, 'In a joint family, whatever comes, from wherever it comes, and in whosever name it comes, belongs to everyone alike.'

The elder Thakur, seeing Vikram, took a step further forward. 'Certainly not! If I were to commit a crime, it's I who would be arrested, not the joint family. I who would be punished, not the joint family. This is a personal matter.'
'This will be settled in a court of law.'

'Go to court by all means. If the lottery comes up in my son's name, my wife's, or my own, you'll have no claim on it whatever — just as, if it comes up in your name, I, my wife, or my son will have no claim on it either.'

'This is gambling — you must understand that. The winnings or losses of a wager cannot touch the family. If tomorrow you were to lose ten or twenty thousand at the races, the family would bear no responsibility for it.'

When Vikram's mother heard that the two brothers were at loggerheads and that blows were about to be exchanged, she came running out and began trying to calm them both.

The younger Thakur said angrily, 'What are you trying to calm me for? Go and calm the one who's sitting there with four tickets to his name. What do I have — one solitary ticket, and no guarantee even of that! That someone with four times my chance of winning should let his honesty go bad — that is a matter for shame and sorrow.'

The Thakurain, trying to console her husband's younger brother, said, 'Very well — half of my winnings will be yours. Are you satisfied now?'

The elder Thakur cut his wife off sharply. 'Why should he get half? I won't give him a single cowrie. Even if we're generous and kind-hearted about it, he can't possibly get more than a fifth. On what principle can a claim to half be made — not intellectual, not religious, not moral?'

Just then Vikram's elder brother came in, his head and hand bandaged, limping, fresh bloodstains on his clothes, but his face beaming with joy, and dropped into an armchair. The elder Thakur asked in alarm, 'What state is this you're in? Eh? How did you get hurt? You haven't been in some brawl, have you?'

Prakash said lightly, 'No brawl at all, sir! The thing is, I went to see Jhakkad Baba. You know how he is — he runs from the very sight of people, chasing after them with stones in hand. Whoever gets frightened and flees, is lost. But whoever keeps following him even after taking blows from his stones turns to gold, like the philosopher's stone. That's his test. Today when I got there, some fifty people had gathered — some with sweets, some with costly offerings, some with bolts of cloth. Jhakkad Baba was sitting in meditation. All at once he opened his eyes, saw the crowd, gathered up a few stones, and ran at them. Then what a stampede followed! People fled, stumbling and falling over each other. They scattered like chaff — not one stood his ground. I alone stayed rooted there, like a clock tower. So he let fly a stone at me. The first one struck my head — his aim never misses. My skull rang with the blow, and blood came streaming down. But I didn't budge. Then Baba threw a second stone, which caught me on the hand. I fell down and lost consciousness. When I came to, there was dead silence all around — Baba too had vanished. He has a way of disappearing like that. Whom could I call, whom could I ask to bring a carriage? My hand was splitting with pain, and blood was still flowing from my head. Somehow I got up and went straight to the doctor. He examined me and said the bone was broken, and bandaged it up. He's told me to foment it with hot water, and he'll come again in the evening. But never mind the injury — the lottery is as good as mine now, that's certain. It has never once happened that anyone who took a beating from Jhakkad Baba was left unlucky. I mean to have Baba's hut rebuilt before anything else.'

A look of satisfaction spread over the elder Thakur's face. A bed was laid out at once, and Prakash lay down on it. His mother began fanning him, her face bright with pleasure too — to win ten lakh at the cost of a few bruises was no bad bargain at all.

The younger Thakur's belly, meanwhile, was gnawing with restless envy. No sooner had the elder Thakur gone off to eat, and the Thakurain gone to arrange a meal for Prakash, than the younger Thakur turned to Prakash and asked, 'Does he throw the stones very hard? How hard could he really throw them?' Prakash, catching his drift, said, 'Oh, sir, he doesn't throw stones — he throws cannonballs! He's built like a giant, and so powerful that one blow of his fist could finish off a whole pride of lions. Any ordinary man would be done for with a single stone. Plenty of people have died of it — yet to this day no case has ever been brought against Jhakkad Baba. And he doesn't stop at two or four stones either — he'll go on throwing until you fall down and lose consciousness. But the secret of it is this: the more blows you take, the closer you come to your goal...'

At last the day of fate's decision arrived — the twentieth of July. A night of execution, it might as well have been! When we rose that morning, it was as though some intoxication had come over us, the twin fever of hope and dread. Both Thakurs had bathed in the Ganga while it was still dark and were sitting in the temple performing their worship. Today, even in my own heart, devotion stirred. I went into the temple and began praying silently to Thakurji — Lord of the helpless, will your merciful gaze not fall on us too? Do you not know with what difficulty we scraped together the money for our ticket? You are the knower of all hearts. Who in this world deserves your mercy more than we do? Vikram arrived at the temple door dressed in his best suit, beckoned to me, said only, 'I'm off to the post office,' and vanished like the wind. A little while later Prakash came out of the house carrying trays of sweets, stood at the temple door, and began distributing them to the beggars, who had gathered there in a crowd. And the two Thakurs sat with their gaze fixed on the Lord's feet, heads bowed, eyes closed, lost in devotion. The elder Thakur raised his head, looked at the priest, and said, 'God is truly tender toward his devotees, isn't he, Panditji?'

The priest agreed. 'Yes indeed, sir — to protect his devotees, God rushed all the way from the ocean of milk and saved the elephant from the crocodile's jaws.'

A moment later the younger Thakur raised his head too and said to the priest, 'And tell me, Panditji, God is all-powerful, isn't he — the knower of all hearts, who understands what lies within everyone?'

The priest agreed again. 'Yes indeed, sir — if he weren't the knower of hearts, how could he know what lies in everyone's mind? Seeing Shabari's devotion, he himself came and fulfilled her heart's desire.'

The worship came to an end, and the arati was performed. Both brothers sang the arati loudly today, and the elder Thakur dropped two rupees into the plate. The younger Thakur dropped in four. The elder Thakur shot him one furious glance, then turned his face away.

I too came out behind them and went to help Prakash babu distribute the sweets, but he pulled the tray away and said, 'Never mind, let me finish it myself — there's hardly any left now.' Feeling snubbed, I set off towards the post office, when Vikram came up smiling on his bicycle. The moment they saw him, everyone seemed to go mad. Both Thakurs were standing right there and pounced on him like hawks. There were still a few sweets left on Prakash's tray — he flung the tray to the ground and ran too. And I, caught up in the same frenzy, hoisted Vikram right up in my arms; but no one thought to ask him anything — everyone was simply shouting cries of triumph.

The younger Thakur changed his stance. 'Never! All these three months of penance, come to this? Well, well!' Prakash thumped his chest and said, 'Here I sit with a split head and a broken hand — what a joke this is!'

Now no one could go on disbelieving it. The elder Thakur, seething, went into the temple and dismissed the priest on the spot. 'So this is what all these years of keeping you have come to! You live off ill-gotten food and lounge about in comfort!'

The younger Thakur seemed to crumple entirely — he beat his head two or three times and sank down right where he stood. But Prakash's fury knew no bounds. He picked up his thick staff and set off to give Jhakkad Baba a thrashing.

He said, 'When I saw the crowd of thousands outside the post office, I couldn't help laughing at our own foolishness. If there are this many people in just one city, there must be a thousand times as many across the whole of India, and in the whole world a hundred thousand times as many again. And that mountain of hope I had built up inside myself suddenly shrank, all at once, down to the size of a mustard seed — and I burst out laughing. It was as if some generous soul had taken a mere handful of grain in his hand and invited a hundred thousand people to dine on it, while here, every single person in our house was convinced that...'
