That a beautiful young woman should be found fast asleep, early one morning, on a crystal bench in Gandhi Park, is a startling thing. Beauties do come to the parks to take the air, to laugh, to run about, to play among the flowers and shrubs -- nobody pays them any mind for that; but that some young woman should lie there unaware of the world, asleep on a bench beside the path, is altogether out of the ordinary, the sort of thing that draws every eye to itself by force. So many people are strolling along the path -- old and young alike. Every one of them pauses there a moment, casts a glance at the sight, and then moves on. The young men go by smiling with a knowing air, the old go by shaking their heads with an air of concern, and the young women go by with their eyes cast down in modesty.

Vasant and Hashim, in shorts and vests, come running barefoot. The Olympian race is to be held during the Christmas holidays, and the two of them are in training for it. Reaching this spot, both of them stop, and, stealing furtive glances at the young woman, begin exchanging thoughts.
Vasant said, 'Couldn't she find any other place to sleep?'
Hashim answered, 'She must be some prostitute.'
'But even prostitutes don't behave so shamelessly.'
'A prostitute who isn't shameless isn't a prostitute.'
'There are plenty of things in which a respectable wife and a prostitute behave just the same. No prostitute would ordinarily want to sleep out on the street.'
'Showing off one's looks is the new art.'
'The most beautiful form of art is concealment, not display. A prostitute understands this secret perfectly well.'
'And her concealment is only to heighten her attraction.'
'That may be, but her merely lying asleep here doesn't prove she's a prostitute. There's vermilion in the parting of her hair.'
'A prostitute can play the married woman whenever it suits her. There must have been round after round of drink all night long; there must have been amorous sport. Worn out with exhaustion, and cooled by the night air, she must have drifted off to sleep.'
'To me she looks like a respectable married woman.'
'Would a respectable married woman come to the park to sleep?'
'It's possible -- perhaps she quarrelled at home and came away.'
'Why don't we just go and ask her?'
'You're a complete fool. How can you wake up a total stranger without even an introduction?'
'Come now, we'll get acquainted as we go there -- in fact, she'll be grateful to us.'
'And what if she snaps at us instead?'
'What is there to snap about? We'll speak to her in words steeped in courtesy and warmth. No young woman could take offence at words like that. Why, even women whose youth has faded blossom at hearing such honeyed words -- and this one is in the very flush of her youth. I have never seen such a lovely union of beauty and youth.'
'This beauty has engraved itself upon my heart for as long as I live. Perhaps I shall never be able to forget it.'
'And still I say she's some prostitute.'
'Even if a goddess of beauty is a prostitute, she is still worthy of worship.'
'Are you just going to stand here talking like a poet? Why not walk over there. You just stand by -- I'll be the one to cast the noose.'
'She's some respectable wife.'
'If a respectable wife goes and sleeps in a park, it can mean nothing but that she wants to attract attention -- and that is the mentality of a prostitute.'
'These days young women don't avert their eyes from men.'
'Yes, but she's a respectable wife, and to speak to a respectable wife in any way at all I consider sheer impertinence.'
'Then come, let's get back to our running.'
'But that image keeps running through my heart all the same.'
'Then come, let's sit down. When she gets up to go, we'll follow her. I say she's a prostitute.'
'And I say, she's a respectable wife.'
'Then it's a bet -- ten rupees each.'
Two elderly men come sauntering along, gazing down at the ground, as though searching for their lost youth. One is stooped at the waist, his hair still black, his body stout; the other's hair has turned white but his back is straight, his frame slight. Both have lost their own teeth but wear false ones, and both wear spectacles. The stout gentleman is a lawyer; the slim gentleman, a doctor.
The lawyer said, 'Look at that -- a marvel of the twentieth century!'
The doctor said, 'Yes indeed, I see it -- Hindustan is no different from the rest of the world, after all.'
'But you surely can't call this good manners?'
'This is no time to invoke good manners.'
'She's a girl from some respectable family, surely.'
'She's a prostitute, sir -- can't you even tell that much?'
'A prostitute isn't so coarse as this.'
'And are girls of good family coarse, then?'
'It's the new freedom -- a new intoxication.'
'Well, our own lives, good or bad, are behind us now. Whoever it falls on will have to bear it.'
'Life is going to become worse than hell.'
'What a pity -- youth has taken its leave of us.'
'But our eyes haven't taken their leave along with it, and this heart of ours hasn't taken its leave either.'
'So there it is -- go on feasting your eyes, and scorching your heart.'
'I feel like being young all over again. To tell the truth, it's only in the life of today that life is truly in bloom. In our time you could hardly find a pretty face anywhere. Today, wherever you turn, there is beauty upon beauty on display.'
'I hear that the one thing young women hate most in this world is old men.'
'I'm not convinced of that. A man's true worth lies not in his youth but in his vigour. Many an old man is tougher than the young. I myself find proof of this every other day. I don't consider myself inferior to any young man.'
'All that's true; but an old man's heart grows faint with age. If it weren't so, we wouldn't have come away like this after seeing this woman. I couldn't even bring myself to look my fill at her. I kept fearing her eyes would open and she'd catch me staring, and what would she think of me then!'
'Be glad, then, that her magic worked even on an old man.'
'Ah, let it be.'
'You should take a course of "Okasa" for a few days.'
'I've already tried Chandroday. It's all just talk to fleece people.'
'Why not get a monkey-gland treatment done, then?'
'Why don't you settle things with this young woman on my behalf. I'm ready.'
'Yes, that I'll take upon myself; but, my friend, I'll want my own share too. Meaning that now and then I too shall drop by your house and cool my eyes with the sight of her.'
'If you come with any such intention, I'll become your enemy.'
'Oh ho, you've turned young the moment you heard the name monkey-gland!'
'I for one think this too is just another trick doctors have dreamed up to fleece people. Truly!'
'Ah, sir, in the very touch of a woman like this there is youth itself -- what are you doing chasing after such things. In every limb of hers, every glance, every smile, every garment, youth is brimming over. A hundred monkey-glands are not worth one woman's embrace.'
'Well, come along now -- your clients must be sitting there waiting.'
'This face will stay with me.'
'There, now you've gone and reminded me of it again.'
'She lies there like this precisely so that people will look upon her beauty, the arrangement of her limbs, her tumbled tresses, her bared throat -- and beat their breasts in longing. To walk away like this is an injustice to her. She is calling out, and you are running away.'
'Can a young man ever love the way we can, with our whole heart?'
'Quite right. I myself have had dealings with such women, women who go looking for tasteful old men. Young men are flighty, unruly, fickle, and full of pride. They want something in return for their love. Here, one surrenders oneself selflessly.'
'Your words have set my heart tingling with delight.'
'But remember one thing -- what if she turns out to have some young lover already?'
'Then let her have one -- we're not afraid of the likes of him.'
'Wasn't there some talk of your own remarriage at one point?'
'Yes, there was; but what can one do when one's own son girds himself for enmity? My son Yashvant actually took to showing me his gun. That's the wonder of this age we live in.'
The October sun had grown fierce. The two friends went on their way.
Two ladies -- one elderly, the other in the full bloom of youth -- got down from their car at the gate of the park and came in to take the air. Their eyes too fell upon that young woman overcome with sleep.
The elderly one said, 'What a shameless creature.'
The young lady looked at her with disdain and said, 'These are the airs of a lady from a great house, I suppose.'
'Just look at these airs, that's all. This is exactly why men say -- women ought not to be given freedom.'
'To me she looks like some prostitute.'
'A prostitute she may well be; but what right has she to shame the whole society of women with such shamelessness?'
'How contentedly she's sleeping, as though she were in her own home.'
'It is sheer shamelessness. I don't want purdah, I don't want servitude to men, but I don't want to give up the dignity and modesty that belong to women either. When I see some young woman smoking a cigarette on the street, my blood boils. In the same way, a low-cut jumper doesn't sit well with me either. Must we prove ourselves terribly forward only by throwing away all sense of our own decency? Do men go about with their chests or backs bared?'
'That's just the point, Baiji -- whenever I take you to task over this, you get upset with me. A man is free, and he feels in his heart that he is free; he has no need to put on any pretence of freedom. A woman knows in her heart that she alone is not free, and that is why she makes such a show of her freedom. Those who are truly strong do not swagger. It is only the weak who put on airs. Will you not even grant her that much right -- to wipe her own tears?'
'I say only this -- a woman can make a man dance to her tune far more by concealing herself than she ever could by exposing herself.'
'Why should it be only the woman who worries about attracting the man? Why doesn't the man observe purdah before the woman?'
'Don't make me open my mouth today, Meenu. Go wake the girl and tell her to go and sleep at home. So many people are coming and going here, and this shameless creature is lying there with her legs sprawled out. However did she manage to fall asleep here?'
'It was so hot last night, Bai-ji! The poor thing must have dropped off to sleep once she felt the cool air.'
'She's been here all night -- I have my suspicions about it.'
Meenu went up to the young woman, took her hand, and shook it. 'Why are you sleeping here, devi-ji? The day is well up already -- get up and go home.'
The young woman opened her eyes. 'Oh, has the day come up so far already? Was I really asleep? I keep getting these spells of dizziness in my head. I thought perhaps some fresh air might do me good. I came here; but such a spell of giddiness came over me that I sat down on this bench, and after that I lost all awareness. Even now I can't stand up. I feel I shall fall if I try. I've taken a great deal of medicine, but it does no good. You must know Doctor Shyamnath -- he is my father-in-law.'
The young lady said in astonishment, 'Really! Why, he passed by this very way just now.'
'Really! But how would he recognize me? My gauna hasn't taken place yet.'
'Then are you the wife of his son, Vasantlal?'
The young woman bowed her head in shyness and acknowledged it. Meenu said with a laugh, 'Why, Vasantlal too passed by this way just now. I know him from the university.'
'Really! But where has he ever seen me?'
'Then shall I run and give word to the doctor sahib?'
'No, please don't. I shall be quite well again in a little while.'
'Vasantlal is standing right over there too -- shall I call him?'
'No, please don't call anyone.'
'Then come along, let me drop you home in our car.'
'That would be very kind of you.'
'Which neighbourhood do you live in?'
'Begumganj -- Mr. Jairamdas's house.'
'I shall speak to Mr. Vasantlal about this very today.'
'How was I to know he comes to this park?'
'But you might at least have brought someone along with you?'
'What for? There was no need.'
