Ishwari was the son of a great landlord, and I the son of a poor clerk who possessed no property beyond the sweat of his own labour. Between the two of us there was a running argument. I would rail against landlords, calling them predatory beasts, blood-sucking leeches, and parasitic vines that flower only at the treetops. He would take the landlords' side, though by nature his position was always the weaker one, for he had no argument in their favour. To say that not all men are equal, that there have always been the great and the small and always will be, was a feeble argument. It was hard to justify this arrangement by any human or moral law. In the heat of these debates I would often grow sharp and say things that struck home; but Ishwari, even in defeat, would only smile. I never once saw him lose his temper. Perhaps the reason was that he himself sensed the weakness of his position. Yet he never spoke a civil word to servants. Of that heedless arrogance so common among the rich, he too had received a generous share. Let a servant be a moment late in making the bed, let the milk come too hot or too cold, let the bicycle not be cleaned to perfection, and he would fly into a rage. He could not bear the slightest sloth or insolence. But toward friends, and toward me especially, his manner was all warmth and gentleness. Had I been in his place, I daresay the same hardness would have grown in me too, for my love of the common people rested not on principle but on my own circumstances; whereas he, had he been in my place, would probably have remained a rich man still, for by nature he was given to comfort and loved a life of ease.

That year, during the Dussehra holidays, I decided not to go home. I had no money for the fare, nor did I wish to burden my family. I knew well that what they gave me was already far more than they could afford. Besides, there were the examinations to think of — there was still a great deal to study, and who studies once he is home? Yet I had no heart to sit alone in the boarding-house like a ghost either. So when Ishwari invited me to come to his home, I agreed without needing to be pressed. With Ishwari I would get my exam preparation done properly too — rich though he was, he was hardworking and sharp-witted.

He added, though — Listen, brother, just keep one thing in mind. If you go about condemning landlords there, things will turn sour, and my people will be hurt by it. They rule over their tenants on the very claim that God created tenants to serve them. And the tenant believes the same thing. If it were ever suggested to him that there is no fundamental difference between landlord and tenant, landlords would vanish from the face of the earth.

I had never in my life travelled even Intermediate class, let alone Second. Now, for once, I had the good fortune to travel Second Class. The train was not due until nine at night, but in the excitement of the journey we reached the station by evening itself. After strolling about for a while, we went into the refreshment room and ate. Given my clothes and bearing, it took the discerning waiters no time at all to work out who was the master and who the hanger-on; yet, I could not say why, their impertinence stung me. The money came out of Ishwari's pocket. Perhaps my father's whole salary was less than what these waiters received in tips and gratuities. Even the eight-anna coin he gave as we left was Ishwari's own. And yet I found myself expecting from all of them the same alacrity and deference with which they were serving Ishwari. How they all came running at Ishwari's word! But when I asked for something, they showed nothing like the same eagerness. I found no taste in the food at all. This discrepancy held my whole attention captive.

By the time dawn broke we reached Moradabad. Several men stood waiting at the station to receive us. Two were gentlemen, five were labourers pressed into unpaid service. The labourers carried our luggage; the two gentlemen walked behind. One was a Muslim, Riyasat Ali; the other a Brahmin, Ramharakh. Ishwari answered — Yes, he studies with me, and lives with me too. In fact, it is on his account that I am still stuck in Allahabad at all — otherwise I would have come away to Lucknow long ago. This time I fairly dragged him along. Several telegrams had already come from his home; but I had the replies sent back refusing every time. The last telegram was even marked urgent, at four annas a word — and even that one got an answer of refusal from here.

Ishwari resolved the doubt — He is a devotee of Mahatma Gandhi, sir! He wears nothing but khadi. He's burned every last one of his old clothes! I am no horseman. As a boy I had ridden a few broken-down old nags. Here I found two fine, spirited horses standing ready for us. My heart very nearly failed me. Ishwari's house was no house — it was a fortress. A gateway like that of an Imambara, a guard pacing at the door, servants beyond counting, an elephant tethered in the yard. Ishwari introduced me to his father, his uncles, his elders — all with the same extravagant flourish. He built up such an atmosphere around me that words fail. Village landlords, with profits running into the lakhs, and yet men who regarded even a police constable as an officer worth deferring to. I was lying on the cot. Perhaps never before in my life had anyone pressed my feet. I who used to mock Ishwari for just this sort of thing — calling it the affectations of the rich, the asininity of the gentry, the arrogance of the great, and I don't know what else — I was now, myself, play-acting the part of a landed gentleman fresh out of swaddling clothes!

I had thought that out there in the village we would study hard, with real concentration; but here the whole day went by in amusements. One day we would go boating on the river, another day hunting fish or birds, another watching wrestlers grapple, another sitting over a game of chess. Ishwari would order in plenty of eggs, and omelettes would be cooked on a stove right in the room. A whole retinue of servants was always hovering about. There was no need to lift a hand or foot of one's own — a mere word from the tongue sufficed. Sit down to bathe, and a man stood ready to bathe you; lie down, and two men stood by to fan you. I had become famous as Mahatma Gandhi's noble disciple. My reputation ran through the whole household, inside and out. Breakfast must never be a moment late — Kunwar Sahib might be displeased. The bedding must be laid out exactly on time — it was Kunwar Sahib's hour for sleep. I had grown even more delicate-minded than Ishwari himself, or had been forced into becoming so. Ishwari would lay out his own bedding with his own hands; but how could a noble guest like Kunwar Sahib possibly lay out his own bed! It would have tarnished his greatness.

One day this very thing actually happened. Ishwari was in the house — talking with his mother, perhaps, and it took longer than expected. Here it turned ten o'clock. My eyes were heavy with sleep; but how was I to lay out my own bedding? I was a Kunwar, after all. Around half past eleven a maidservant came. She was a great favourite, much indulged. Caught up in the household's business, she had quite forgotten to lay out my bed. The moment she remembered, she came running. I scolded her so severely that she must have remembered it for a long time after.

In just the same way, one day Ishwari had gone off to a feast somewhere. Evening fell, but the lamp was not lit. The lamp stood right there on the table, the matches lay right beside it, but Ishwari himself never lit a lamp. So how could Kunwar Sahib possibly light one? I was growing irritated. The newspaper had come and lay there; my mind was set on it, but the lamp was nowhere to be found. As luck would have it, Munshi Riyasat Ali happened to turn up just then. I burst out at him, gave him such a dressing-down that the poor man was left quite dazed — You people don't even have the sense to see that a lamp gets lit! I don't know how such lazy, shirking fellows manage to survive here at all. In my house such a man wouldn't last an hour. Riyasat Ali, hands trembling, lit the lamp.

The holidays ended in this fashion, and we set off once more for Prayag. Many people from the village came to see us off. The Thakur even walked with us all the way to the station. I too played out my part right to the last, with great finesse, and stamped the seal of my Kuber-like generosity and my divinity upon every heart there. I longed to give each servant a handsome tip; but where was the means for that? I had my return ticket already — all that remained was to board the train; but when the train came, it was packed to bursting. Everyone was returning home after the Dussehra holidays. In Second Class there was not room to set down a grain of sesame. Intermediate Class was worse still. This was the last train — there was no way we could stay behind. With great difficulty we found room in Third Class. Our grandeur made its mark there too; but I found it distasteful to sit in that carriage. We had come stretched out at our ease; we were going back cramped and huddled. There was not even room to shift one's position.

Several of the men were educated too. They were praising British rule among themselves. One gentleman said — Such justice is not to be found under any other government. High and low, all are equal. Let even a king commit injustice against anyone, and the courts will seize him by the neck all the same. Another gentleman seconded him — Why, sir, you can even bring a suit against the Emperor himself. The court can pass a decree against the Emperor.

One man, with a large bundle tied to his back, was travelling to Calcutta. He could find nowhere to set his bundle down, so he kept it tied to his back. Restless because of it, he kept coming and standing by the door again and again. I was sitting close to the door myself. His repeatedly coming and rubbing his bundle against my face annoyed me a great deal. For one thing there was little enough air as it was; for another, this boor coming and planting himself in front of my face felt to me like a hand closing around my throat. For a while I sat there restraining myself. Then all at once my temper broke. I seized him and shoved him back, and struck him two hard slaps.

His eyes bulged and he said — Why are you hitting me, babuji? I've paid my fare too.

I got up and landed two or three more slaps on him.

A storm broke out in the carriage. From every side a hail of protest fell upon me.

'If you're so delicate about these things, why didn't you sit in First Class!'

'What fault had the poor fellow committed? There's no room to breathe in this carriage, and if he stood a moment at the window just to catch his breath, such fury over it! Does a man lose every last trace of humanity simply because he's grown rich?'

'So this is the British rule you were just singing the praises of.'

A villager said — Can't even get past the door of an office, and such high and mighty airs on him!

ईश्वरी ने अंग्रेजी मे कहा-What an idiot you are Bir!
Ishwari said in English — 'What an idiot you are, Bir!' And by now my intoxication seemed to be wearing off, little by little.
