Halku came in and said to his wife -- The moneylender has come; give me whatever rupees we have put by, so I can get him off my back somehow.
Munni was sweeping the floor. She turned round and said -- We have only three rupees. If you give those away, where will the money for a blanket come from? How will the night be spent out in the field through Magh and Poos? Tell him we'll pay him once the crop comes in. Not now.
Halku stood a moment, uncertain. Poos was upon them, and without a blanket there was no way he could sleep at night out in the field. But the moneylender would not be put off -- he would growl, he would curse. Well, let the cold be the death of us, at least this bother would be off our heads. Thinking this, he came up beside his wife, his great heavy frame (which gave the lie to his own name) hanging over her, and said in a wheedling voice -- Just give it to me, let me get this weight off my neck. I'll think of some other way for the blanket.
Munni moved back away from him, and, her eyes flashing, said -- So you'll think of some other way! Let's hear it, then, what other way will you find? Will some charity hand you a blanket? Who knows how much is still owed, that never seems to get paid off no matter what we do. I tell you, why don't you give up this farming altogether? Work yourself half to death, and whatever you grow, hand it all over as debt, and be done with it. Is that what we were born for, just to keep paying off debt? Go and work for wages to fill your belly. Have done with this kind of farming. I won't give the money -- I won't.
Halku said gloomily -- So I'm to take his abuse, then?
Munni burst out -- Why should he abuse you? What right has he to that?
But even as she said this, her knotted brows loosened. In what Halku had just said there was a hard truth that seemed to stare her down like some fearsome beast.
She went and took the rupees down from the niche in the wall, and, coming back, put them in Halku's hand. Then she said -- You give up this farming from now on. Working for wages, at least we'll get to eat our bread in peace. No one will lord it over us. It's a fine kind of farming this is. Go earn your wages instead, and let this land go to ruin along with all its high-and-mighty creditors.
Halku took the rupees and walked out as though he were going to give away his own heart. He had saved those three rupees for a blanket, scraping together one paisa at a time out of his wages. And now, today, they were going out of his hands. With every step, his head bowed lower under the weight of his own helplessness.
A dark night of Poos. The stars overhead seemed to be shivering with cold. Halku, at the edge of his field, lay beneath a canopy of sugarcane leaves on a bamboo cot, wrapped in his old coarse blanket, trembling. Beneath the cot his companion, the dog Jabra, lay whimpering with the cold, his muzzle buried in his belly. Neither of the two could sleep.
Halku, drawing his knees up against his chest, said -- What is it, Jabra, does the cold bite? I told you to stay home and lie on the straw. What did you come here for? Now eat your fill of cold -- what am I to do about it? You knew perfectly well I wasn't coming here for sweets and pastries, and still you came running along ahead of me. Now you can go on crying for all the good it'll do you.
Jabra, lying there, wagged his tail, and, drawing out his whimper into a long note, gave one yawn and fell silent. His dog's wit had perhaps caught on -- his master could not sleep for all his whimpering.
Halku drew out a hand and, stroking Jabra's cold back, said -- Don't come with me tomorrow, or you'll freeze solid. This wretched west wind seems to be bringing ice with it from somewhere or other. Let me get up and fill another pipe. Somehow or other the night must be got through. I've already smoked eight pipes. Such is the pleasure of farming. And there are those fortunate souls lying about who, if the cold should so much as come near them, would flee in a panic from the warmth of it -- thick mattresses, quilts, blankets. Not a chance that winter could ever get the better of them. Such is the way fate deals things out. We do the labor, and others carry off the pleasure of it.
Halku got up, drew out a little fire from the pit, and filled his pipe. Jabra too sat up.
Halku, smoking his pipe, said -- Smoke a pipe -- it doesn't make the cold go away exactly, but it does help pass the time.
Jabra looked up into his face with eyes brimming over with affection.
Bear the cold today as well, Jabra. From tomorrow I'll spread straw here. Burrow into that, and the cold won't touch you.
Jabra laid his forepaws on Halku's knees and brought his muzzle close to Halku's face. Halku felt his warm breath upon him.
Having smoked his pipe, Halku lay down again, resolved that come what may, this time he would sleep. But no sooner had a moment passed than a trembling began in his chest. Now he lay on this side, now on that, but the cold, like some demon, sat pressing down upon his chest.
When it became more than he could bear, he gently lifted Jabra up, and, patting his head, laid him to sleep in his lap. From the dog's body came some foul odor or other, but holding him close against himself, he felt a happiness such as he had not known in months. Jabra, it seemed, believed heaven itself lay here, and in Halku's pure soul there was not so much as a trace of disgust toward the dog. He would have embraced his own closest friend or brother with no greater readiness than this. He felt no sting from his own poverty, the very thing that had brought him to this state today. No -- this strange companionship seemed to have thrown open every door of his soul, and every atom of his being shone with light.
Suddenly Jabra caught the sound of some animal. This special closeness had stirred a new vigor in him, one that made light of the cold gusts of wind. He sprang up at once and, coming out from beneath the canopy, began to bark. Halku called him back again and again, coaxing him; but he would not come near. He kept running round and round the field, barking. For a moment he would come back, only to dash off again at once. In his heart, duty leapt like a yearning.
Another hour passed. Night set the cold ablaze upon the wind. Halku sat up, drew his knees together against his chest, and buried his head between them, but still the cold would not lessen. It felt as though all his blood had frozen solid, as though ice were flowing through his veins in place of blood.
He bent his head back and looked up at the sky -- how much of the night was left. The Seven Sages had not yet climbed even halfway up the heavens. Only once they rose higher would morning come at all. There was still more than a watch of night left.
Some distance from Halku's field, about a rifle-shot away, lay a mango orchard. The leaves had begun to fall. A great heap of them had gathered in the orchard. Halku thought, let me go and gather up the leaves and burn them, and warm myself well by the fire. If anyone sees me gathering leaves at night, they'll think I'm some ghost. Who knows, some animal might be lying hidden there too -- but there was no sitting still any longer now.
He went to the nearby pigeon-pea field, pulled up several plants, and, making a broom of them, along with a smoldering cake of dung-fuel in his hand, set off toward the orchard. Jabra, seeing him coming, came up and began wagging his tail.
Halku said -- I can't bear it any longer, Jabru! Come, let's gather up leaves in the orchard and warm ourselves. Once we're good and warm, we'll come back and sleep. There's still plenty of night left.
Jabra whimpered his agreement and walked on ahead toward the orchard.
A deep darkness lay over the orchard, and through that darkness a pitiless wind went crushing the fallen leaves as it passed. Drops of dew kept dripping down from the trees, pit-a-pat.
All at once a gust came bearing the fragrance of henna blossoms.
Halku said -- What a lovely scent that was, Jabru! Is something reaching your nose too?
Jabra had found a bone lying somewhere on the ground. He was gnawing away at it.
Halku set the fire down on the ground and began gathering the leaves. In a little while a whole heap of leaves had piled up. His hands grew numb with cold, his bare feet ached, and still he went on raising his mountain of leaves. In this very bonfire he would burn the cold itself to ash.
Before long the bonfire caught and blazed up. Its flame kept leaping up to brush against the leaves of the tree above, then falling back. In that flickering light, the great trees of the orchard looked as though they were holding up that fathomless darkness upon their own heads. In that endless ocean of darkness, the light seemed to rock and toss like a little boat.
Halku sat before the fire, warming himself. After a moment he took off his outer wrap, tucked it under his arm, and stretched out both his legs, as though daring the cold -- do your worst, whatever you like. Having triumphed over the boundless power of the cold, he could not keep the pride of that victory hidden in his heart.
He said to Jabra -- Well, Jabru, isn't the cold gone now?
Jabra whimpered, as though to say -- As if the cold will ever really leave.
'I hadn't thought of this trick earlier, or why would we have suffered so much cold.'
Jabra wagged his tail.
'Come now, let's jump across this fire. Let's see who manages it. If you get burnt, little one, I'll see to your cure myself.'
Jabra looked at that mass of fire with timid eyes.
'Don't go telling Munni about this tomorrow, or she'll pick a fight.'
So saying, he leapt, and cleared the fire cleanly. A little flame caught at his feet, but that was nothing to speak of. Jabra circled round the fire and came and stood beside him.
Halku said -- Come on, come on, this won't do. Jump over from up there. He jumped again, and landed on this side of the fire.
The leaves had all burned away now. Darkness had settled over the orchard once more. Beneath the ashes a little fire still lingered, which would wake at a gust of wind, only to close its eyes again a moment later.
Halku wrapped his blanket round himself again and sat by the warm ashes, humming a song. Warmth had come into his body. And the more the cold grew, the more drowsiness pressed down upon him.
Jabra suddenly barked loudly and bolted off toward the field. It seemed to Halku that a herd of animals had come into his field. Perhaps a herd of nilgai. Their sounds of leaping and running came clearly to his ears. Then it seemed as though they were grazing in the field. The sound of their grazing came to him, a steady crunching.
He said to himself -- No, with Jabra there, no animal could possibly get into the field. He'd tear it to pieces. I must be imagining things. Where is it, then? Now I can't hear a thing at all. What a trick my own mind has played on me.
He called out loudly -- Jabra, Jabra!
Jabra went on barking. He did not come near.
Then came the sound of grazing in the field once more. Now he could no longer deceive himself. To move from his spot felt like poison to him. How thoroughly he had curled himself up. To go out into the field in this bitter cold and frost, to go running after animals, seemed beyond bearing. He did not stir from his place.
He shouted at the top of his voice -- Holi, holi! Holi!!
Jabra barked again. The animals were grazing in the field. The crop stood ready for harvest. What fine farming it had been, and now these wretched animals were laying it all to ruin.
Halku made up his mind firmly and rose, and took two or three steps; but suddenly such a cold, stinging gust of wind struck him, like the sting of a scorpion, that he went back and sat down again by the dying fire, and began raking the ashes to warm his cold body.
Jabra went on tearing his throat with barking, the nilgai went on laying waste to the field, and Halku sat quietly beside the warm ashes. Inertia had bound him fast on every side, like so many ropes.
He lay down there beside the ashes, on the warm ground, wrapped himself in his blanket, and fell asleep.
When he woke in the morning, sunlight had already spread over everything. And Munni was saying -- Are you going to lie there sleeping all day? You came out here and made yourself comfortable, and over there the whole field has been ruined.
Halku got up and said -- Have you just come from the field?
Munni said -- Yes, the whole field is destroyed, utterly. Who on earth sleeps through a thing like that? What good did it do, your putting up that little shelter out here?
Halku made an excuse -- I very nearly died. You only think of your field. I had such a pain in my stomach, only I know how bad it was.
The two of them went again to the edge of the field. They saw that the whole field lay trampled flat, and Jabra lay stretched out on his back beneath the shelter, as though there were no life left in him at all.
The two of them stood looking at the state of the field. Munni's face was clouded with sorrow. But Halku was content.
Munni said anxiously -- Now we'll have to work for wages just to pay the land-tax.
Halku said, his face content -- Well, at least we won't have to sleep out here in the cold of the night any more.
