It has been a long while now since I last went to see a Ramlila. Watching men in hideous monkey masks, wearing pyjamas that stop at half the leg and black kurtas, go dashing about hooting 'hoo-hoo' now makes me laugh — it no longer gives me any pleasure. Kashi's Lila is famed the world over; I hear people come from far and wide to see it. I too went once, quite eagerly; but I could see no difference at all between the Lila there and the Lila of some utterly rustic village. True, the staging at Ramnagar has some fine trappings — the masks of the demons and the monkeys are of brass, the maces too are brass; perhaps the crowns of the forest-dwelling brothers are of genuine workmanship. But apart from the trappings, there too it is nothing but the same hoo-hoo. And yet lakhs of people still throng to it.

But there was a time when I too found joy in the Ramlila. 'Joy' is far too mild a word — that joy was nothing less than a kind of ecstasy. As it happened, in those days the Ramlila field lay only a short distance from my house, and the house where the players' costumes and make-up were prepared stood right next to ours. From two in the afternoon the dressing of the players would begin. I would go and sit there from noon itself, and the eagerness with which I ran about doing the heaviest chores — I do not go with such eagerness even to collect my pension today. In one room the princes would be adorned. Ramraj powder was ground and rubbed onto their bodies, powder was applied to their faces, and over the powder, dots of red, green, and blue were painted. The whole forehead, the eyebrows, the cheeks, the chin, would be patterned with these little dots. Only one man was skilled at this task; he alone, in turn, would apply the adornment to all three players. It was my job to bring water in little cups for the colours, to grind the Ramraj powder, to work the fan. When, after these preparations, the palanquin set out, and I sat behind Ramchandra upon it, the delight, the pride, the thrill that filled me then I have never felt again — not even seated in a chair in the Governor's own court. Once, when the Home Member seconded one of my motions in the Legislative Council, I felt something of that same delight, pride, and thrill. Yes, and once again, when my eldest son was nominated to the post of Deputy Tehsildar, something of the same wave rose in my heart; but there is a vast difference between that and the rapture of childhood. In those days it truly felt as though I were sitting in heaven itself.
It was the day of the Nishad-Nauka-Lila — the ferrying of Ram across the river. A few boys had led me astray, and I had gone off to play gulli-danda. I did not go that day to watch the costuming. The palanquin set out too, but I did not leave the game. I had to take my turn. Giving up my turn would have demanded a self-sacrifice far greater than I was capable of; had it been merely a matter of fielding, I would have run off long before — but making someone else field is quite another matter. Well, my turn was finally used up. Had I wished, I could have cheated and gone on batting for another ten or fifteen minutes — there was ample scope for it — but there was no time for that now. I ran straight for the stream. The palanquin had already reached the water's edge. From a distance I saw the boatman coming with his boat. I ran, but running through a crowd of people is no easy thing. When at last, pushing through the crowd, straining with all my might, I reached the ghat, the Nishad had already cast off his boat. How deep was my devotion to Ramchandra! I would neglect my own lessons to coach him, so that he might not fail his examinations. Though older than me, he studied in a lower class; yet this same Ramchandra, seated in the boat, turned his face away as though he did not know me at all. Even in imitation, something of the real thing seeps through. Those whose gaze has always been sharp upon their devotees — how were they to spare me? I grew frantic and began leaping about like a calf on whose neck the yoke has just been placed for the first time. Now I would dash toward the stream, now I would run back searching for some helper — but everyone was lost in their own excitement, and my cries reached no one's ears. Since then I have borne many a great misfortune; but never again have I felt grief such as I felt at that moment.

I had resolved that I would never speak to Ramchandra again, nor ever give him anything to eat; but the very moment he crossed the stream and came back this way from the bridge, I ran and climbed onto the palanquin, as pleased as though nothing at all had happened.

The Ramlila had come to an end. The coronation ceremony was still to come, but for some reason it kept being delayed — perhaps the collections had fallen short. In these days no one so much as asked after Ramchandra. Neither was leave given to go home, nor was any arrangement made for food. One meal a day came from Chaudhary Sahib's house, around three in the afternoon; for the rest of the day no one even asked if he wanted water. But my devotion remained just as it was. In my eyes he was still Ramchandra himself. Whatever food I got at home, I would carry off and give to Ramchandra. Feeding him gave me more joy than eating it myself ever could. The moment I got hold of any sweet or fruit, I would dash headlong toward the chaupal. If Ramchandra was not there, I would search for him everywhere, and until I had made him eat it, I found no peace. At last the day of the coronation arrived. A great shamiana was pitched on the Ramlila ground and handsomely decorated. Troupes of courtesans arrived as well. In the evening Ramchandra's procession set out, and at every doorway the arati was performed before him. According to their devotion, some gave rupees, some gave paise. My father was a police officer, and so he performed the arati without giving anything at all. I cannot describe how ashamed I felt at that moment. As it happened, I had a rupee with me just then — my uncle had come before Dussehra and given me a rupee, which I had kept aside; even on Dussehra day I had not been able to bring myself to spend it. I ran at once and dropped that rupee into the arati thali. Father looked at me with furious eyes but said nothing; yet his expression made it plain that my impudence had dented his dignity. By nearly ten at night this circuit was complete. The arati thali was heaped with rupees and paise; I cannot say for certain, but by my present reckoning it must have come to no less than four or five hundred rupees. Chaudhary Sahib had already spent somewhat more than that, and he was greatly anxious to recover at least two hundred more. The best method he could think of for this was to have the courtesans collect it at the gathering — once people had settled in and the mehfil was in full swing, Abdijan would take hold of the connoisseurs' wrists and make such eyes at them that even the most bashful among them would be shamed into giving something. Abdijan and Chaudhary Sahib fell to discussing terms. As it happened, I overheard the two of them talking. Chaudhary Sahib must have thought, what would this brat understand of our business? But by God's grace I was no fool — I followed the whole story perfectly well.
Chaudhary: Listen, Abdijan, this is asking too much of us. It isn't as though this is our first dealing with you. God willing, you'll keep coming here for years to come. The collections have been very poor this time, otherwise I would not press you so hard.
Abdi: You're trying landlord's tricks on me, are you? Well, that won't work on me, my lord. Ha! I collect the money, and you get to twirl your moustache? A fine way you've found to earn a living. At this rate you'll be a raja in no time. Landlording will look like nothing beside it! Go on, open a brothel tomorrow — I swear by God, you'll be rolling in wealth.
Chaudhary: You're joking, and here I'm running short of rhymes for my trouble.
Abdi: And you think you can out-master me? I make dozens like you dance on my fingertip every day.
Chaudhary: Well then, what exactly is it you want?
Abdi: Whatever I collect, half is mine and half is yours. Come, shake on it.
Chaudhary: Agreed, then.
Abdi: Good — then first count out my hundred rupees. Later you'll start making excuses.
Chaudhary: What! You'll take that too, and this as well?
Abdi: Oh! So you thought I'd let go of my own fee? Well, aren't you the clever one — of course you would think that. As the saying goes, the madman babbles while the mendicant stays sharp.
Chaudhary: So you mean to take a double fee, is that it?
Abdi: If it suits you a hundred times over, so be it! Otherwise my hundred rupees haven't gone anywhere. What, have I been bitten by a mad dog, that I should go about putting my hand in people's pockets? Chaudhary Sahib had no say in the matter; he had to give in before Abdi. The dance began. Abdijan was a woman of dazzling allure — young, and beautiful besides — and her airs and graces were so bewitching that even I felt my own senses grow unsteady. Nor was her gift for reading men any less remarkable. Whoever she sat before, she drew something out of him — hardly anyone gave less than five rupees. She came and sat before Father as well. I positively sank into the ground with shame. When she took hold of his wrist, I was seized with dread. I was certain Father would shake off her hand, and might even rebuke her sharply; but what was this? God! Were my eyes deceiving me? Father was smiling into his moustache. Never had I seen so tender a smile on his face. His eyes brimmed with fondness. Every hair on his body seemed to tingle with pleasure; but God spared me my shame after all — look, he has gently freed his wrist from Abdi's soft hands. But wait — what is this now? Abdi has thrown her arms about his neck! Surely now Father will strike her. Has the wretched woman no shame at all!
One gentleman said with a smile, 'Your tricks won't work here, Abdijan — go find the door.'
What this gentleman said was exactly what was in my own heart, and very justly said too; but for some reason Father turned upon him with furious eyes and gave his moustache a twist. He said nothing aloud, but the look on his face was shouting as plainly as words: you shopkeeper, who do you take me for? Here, on such an occasion, men are ready to lay down even their lives — what then is the worth of mere money! If your heart desires it, put me to the test. May I never show my face again if I do not give double what you give! What a wonder, what an outrage! O earth, why do you not split open! O sky, why do you not come crashing down! Why does death not come and take me this instant! Father was putting his hand into his pocket. He drew something out, showed it to the Seth, and pressed it into Abdijan's hand. Ah — it was a gold mohur! Claps rang out on every side. The Seth had been made a fool of. Whether Father came off the winner or the loser in this, I cannot say for certain. All I saw was that Father drew out a gold mohur and gave it to Abdijan. In his eyes at that moment there was such a swell of proud delight, as though he had just planted his foot upon the grave of Hatim himself. This was the very same father who, on seeing me drop a rupee into the arati thali, had looked at me as if he meant to tear me to pieces — because my well-meant gesture had chipped away at his dignity; and now, in this vile, sordid, disgraceful transaction, he could not contain himself for pride and delight.
Abdijan offered Father a salaam with a charming smile and moved on; but I could not bear to sit there any longer. My head hung low with shame. Had I not seen it with my own eyes, I would never have believed it. Whatever I saw or heard outside, I always made sure to report it to Mother; but this matter I kept hidden from her. I knew it would grieve her deeply to hear of it.
The singing went on the whole night through. The thud of the tabla kept reaching my ears. I longed to go and see, but had not the courage. How could I show my face to anyone? What would I do if someone brought up Father's name there?

In the morning Ramchandra was to take his leave. The moment I rose from my cot, still rubbing my eyes, I ran toward the chaupal, afraid that Ramchandra might already have gone. When I arrived, I found the palanquins of the dancing-girls ready to depart. A score of men stood about them, their faces wearing looks of wistful longing. I did not so much as glance their way. I went straight to Ramchandra. Lakshman and Sita sat there weeping, and Ramchandra stood with his water-pot and cord slung over his shoulder, trying to console them. There was no one else there but me. I asked Ramchandra, in a subdued voice, 'Have you taken your leave already?'
Ramchandra: Yes, we have. What leave is there to speak of, really — Chaudhary Sahib just told us, 'Go, off you go.'
'Didn't you get any money or clothes?'
'Not yet. Chaudhary Sahib says there's no money left over just now. We're to collect it another time.'
'You got nothing at all?'
'Not a single paisa. He says there was nothing left over. I had thought I'd get some rupees and buy books to study; but I got nothing. He hasn't even given us money for the road. He says, it's not far — go on foot.'
Such fury rose in me that I wanted to go and give Chaudhary a piece of my mind. Money, palanquins, everything for the courtesans — and for poor Ramchandra and his companions, nothing at all. The men who had showered ten, twenty rupees each on Abdijan the night before — did they not have even two or four annas to spare for these boys? Father too had given Abdijan a gold mohur. Let me see what they give in Ramchandra's name. I ran straight to Father. He stood ready to leave on some inspection. Seeing me, he said, 'Where are you wandering about? Is this the time to be roaming, when you should be studying?'
I said, 'I'd gone to the chaupal. Ramchandra is leaving. Chaudhary Sahib has given him nothing at all.'

'And what business is that of yours?'
'How will they even get there? They don't have money for the road either!'
'They weren't given even travelling expenses? That is unjust of Chaudhary Sahib.' 'If you would give me two rupees, I could take it to them — with that much they might just be able to reach home.'
Father looked at me with a sharp glance and said, 'Go and see to your books. I have no money to spare.'
So saying, he mounted his horse and rode off. From that very day my reverence for Father fell away. Never again did I trouble myself over his scoldings and rebukes. My heart told me: you have no right to lecture me any longer. I grew to dislike even the sight of his face. Whatever he told me to do, I did the very opposite. Though this brought harm only to myself, my heart at that time was filled with rebellious thoughts.
I had two annas lying with me. I picked up the coins and went, shamefaced, and gave them to Ramchandra. The joy that came over Ramchandra at the sight of those coins was beyond anything I had expected — he seized them as though a thirsty man had found water.
With those two annas in hand, the three deities took their leave. I alone accompanied them to the edge of the town.
When I had seen them off and turned back, my eyes were wet; but my heart was brimming over with joy.
