When the new Salt Department was formed and trading in this God-given commodity was forbidden, people began smuggling it in secret. All manner of deceptions sprang up — some got their way through bribery, others through cunning. It was a golden age for the officials. Men gave up the universally respected post of village record-keeper to become mere constables in this department instead. As for the post of Inspector, even lawyers coveted it.

This was a time when people took English education and Christianity to be one and the same thing. Persian still held sway. Men who had read tales of love and poetry rich in romantic sentiment, and thereby become learned in Persian, would find themselves appointed to the highest posts.

Munshi Vanshidhar, too, having finished the tale of Zulekha's longing, set out in search of employment — holding the love-story of Shirin and Farhad to be a matter of far greater importance than the battle of Nala and Nila, or the discovery of America.

His father was a man of experience. He began to counsel him: 'Son! You can see the sorry state of this household. We are crushed beneath the weight of debt. There are daughters in the house, growing up like wild grass. I am like a tree on a crumbling riverbank — who knows when I shall fall! Now you alone are the master and guardian of this home.

'When you take a job, don't fix your eye on rank — that's like a saint's shrine: what matters is the offering laid upon the cloth. Seek out a post where there is some extra income to be had. A monthly salary is like the full-moon night — it shows itself once, then wanes and vanishes. But extra income is a flowing spring, forever quenching one's thirst. A salary is given by man, and so it never grows. Extra income is given by God, and so it is ever blessed. You are a learned man yourself — what more need I explain?

'In this matter, great discretion is needed. Look at the man before you, look at his need, look at the occasion — and then do what you judge fitting. There is nothing but profit in being hard on a man who needs something from you. But it is somewhat harder to catch one who wants nothing. Keep these words fixed in your mind — they are the earnings of my whole lifetime.

After this counsel, his father gave him his blessing. Vanshidhar was an obedient son. He listened to these words carefully, and then set out from home. In this vast world, patience was his friend, wisdom his guide, and self-reliance his only helper. But he had set out under a good omen, for before long he was appointed to the respected post of Inspector in the Salt Department. The pay was good, and as for extra income, there was simply no limit to it. When the old Munshiji received this happy news, he could not contain his joy. The moneylender softened somewhat, and the liquor-seller's vine of hope grew green again. Thorns began to prick the hearts of the neighbours.

It was a winter's night. The salt department's sepoys and watchmen were deep in drunken sleep. Munshi Vanshidhar had not yet been here even six months, but in this short time he had already won over his superiors with his diligence and fine conduct. The officers had come to place great trust in him.

A mile east of the salt office flowed the Jamuna, and across it stood a bridge of boats. The Inspector had shut his door and was fast asleep. Suddenly he woke, and instead of the sound of the river's flow, he heard the rumble of carts and the shouting of boatmen. He sat up.
'Why would carts be crossing the river at this hour of night? There must surely be something amiss.' Reasoning fed his suspicion. He put on his uniform, tucked his pistol into his pocket, and in no time at all had ridden his horse up to the bridge. He saw a long line of carts crossing to the other side. He called out sharply: 'Whose carts are these?'

Munshi Vanshidhar was startled. Pandit Alopideen was the most respected landholder of that whole region. He dealt in lakhs of rupees; there was hardly anyone, great or small, who was not in his debt. His trade, too, was vast and far-reaching. He was a man of great influence. English officers would come to hunt on his estate and be his guests. Round the year, his charitable kitchen fed all who came.

The Munshi asked, 'Where are the carts headed?' The answer came: 'Kanpur.' But at the question of what they carried, a silence fell. The Inspector's suspicion grew still stronger. After waiting a while for an answer, he said loudly, 'Have you all turned mute? We are asking — what is loaded in these?'

Pandit Alopideen, riding in his splendid carriage, was half asleep, half awake. Suddenly several of the cart-drivers came running up in alarm and woke him, saying — 'Maharaj! The Inspector has stopped the carts, and is standing at the crossing, calling for you.'
Pandit Alopideen had unshakeable faith in the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. He used to say that never mind this world — even in heaven, it was Lakshmi who ruled. And in this he was not wrong: justice and morality are but Lakshmi's playthings, which she makes dance as she pleases. Still lying down, he said proudly, 'Go on, I am coming.' So saying, Panditji, with perfect composure, prepared and ate a few betel rolls. Then, wrapped in his quilt, he came up to the Inspector and said, 'Babuji, blessings on you! Tell me, what offence have we committed that our carts should be stopped? You ought to look kindly upon us Brahmins.'

Vanshidhar said curtly, 'Government orders.'
Pandit Alopideen laughed and said, 'We know nothing of government orders, nor of any government. Our government is you yourself. Between you and me, this is a family matter — how could we ever be outside your favour? You have taken this trouble for nothing. It cannot be that we should pass this way and not make an offering to the deity of this crossing. Indeed, I myself was coming to wait upon you.' The bewitching flute of wealth had no effect on Vanshidhar. A fresh fervour of honesty was upon him. He said sharply, 'I am not one of those traitors to their salt who go about selling their conscience for a few coins. You are under arrest at this moment. You will be charged according to the law. Now, I have no time for further talk. Jamadar Badlu Singh! Take him into custody — I give the order.'
Pandit Alopideen was stunned. A commotion broke out among the cart-drivers. Perhaps this was the first occasion in Panditji's whole life that he had ever had to hear such harsh words. Badlu Singh stepped forward, but awe of the Pandit kept him from daring to lay a hand on him. Panditji had never before seen righteousness show such disrespect for wealth. He thought to himself: this is still a headstrong boy, not yet caught in the web of worldly attachment. He is untamed, he still hesitates. In great humility he said, 'Babu Sahib, do not do this — we shall be ruined. Our honour will be trampled in the dust. What will you gain by insulting us? We are not, after all, outside your favour.'
Vanshidhar said in a hard voice, 'I do not wish to hear such talk.'
The support on which Alopideen had thought himself to stand like a rock now seemed to slip from beneath his feet. His pride and his wealth and splendour had received a sharp blow. But he still had complete faith in the numerical power of money. He said to his agent, 'Lalaji, offer a thousand rupees in notes to Babu Sahib — he seems to be a hungry lion just now.'
Vanshidhar said, heated, 'Not a thousand — not even a lakh could move me from the path of truth.'
This mindless obstinacy of righteousness, this renunciation so rare among the gods themselves, greatly vexed him. Now a battle began between the two powers. Wealth began to attack, leaping higher and higher — from one to five, from five to ten, from ten to fifteen, and from fifteen up to twenty thousand the stakes climbed. But righteousness stood alone before that vast army with supernatural courage, unmoving and unshaken, like a mountain.
Alopideen, losing hope, said, 'I have no more courage left than this. Beyond this, it is your right to do as you please.'
Vanshidhar called out sharply to his Jamadar. Badlu Singh, cursing the Inspector under his breath, stepped toward Pandit Alopideen. Panditji, alarmed, drew back two or three steps. In utmost humility he said, 'Babu Sahib, for God's sake have mercy on me — I am prepared to settle this for twenty-five thousand.'
'Impossible.'
'For thirty thousand?'
'Not possible, however you put it.'
'Not even for forty thousand?'
'Not forty thousand — not even forty lakh is possible.'

Righteousness trampled wealth beneath its feet. Alopideen saw a sturdy man coming toward him with handcuffs. He looked about him on every side with eyes full of despair and helplessness. And then he fell down in a faint.

The world was asleep, but the world's tongue was wide awake. Come morning, from the mouths of young and old alike, this was all one heard. Wherever you looked, someone was passing comment on Panditji's conduct; showers of censure fell on every side, as though the world's sinner had at last been cut loose from his sin.

The milkman who sold water in the name of milk, the officials who filled out their imaginary daily ledgers, the babus who travelled the railway without a ticket, the merchants and money-lenders who forged their documents — all of them were wagging their heads like so many gods sitting in judgment.
When, the next day, Pandit Alopideen walked toward the court as the accused, with constables at his side, handcuffs on his wrists, his heart filled with shame and distress, his neck bowed low — a great commotion broke out through the whole city. Perhaps not even at a fair would eyes have been so eager. Such was the crowd that roof and wall lost all distinction from one another.
But it was only a matter of reaching the courtroom. Pandit Alopideen was the lion of this bottomless forest. The officials were his devotees, the clerks his servants, the lawyers and attorneys his obedient followers, and the orderlies, peons, and watchmen his slaves without wages.
The moment they saw him, people came running from every direction. Everyone was astonished — not that Alopideen had committed this act, but that he had ever fallen into the clutches of the law at all. Why should such a man, possessed of wealth capable of achieving the impossible and of matchless eloquence, ever come within the grip of the law? Every single person felt sympathy for him.
With great haste, an army of lawyers was assembled to repel this attack. On the field of justice, a war broke out between righteousness and wealth. Vanshidhar stood silent. He had no strength but the truth, no weapon but plain speech. There were witnesses, but they wavered, unsteady with greed.
Even to Munshiji it seemed that justice itself was leaning somewhat to the other side. It was a court of justice, but its officers were intoxicated with favouritism. And what fellowship can favouritism have with justice? Where there is favouritism, justice cannot even be imagined. The case was soon concluded.
The Deputy Magistrate wrote in his judgment that the evidence brought against Pandit Alopideen was baseless and mistaken. He was a man of great weight and standing; it was beyond imagining that he would have taken such a reckless risk for so small a gain. Although the salt Inspector, Munshi Vanshidhar, was not greatly at fault, it was a matter of much regret that, owing to his impertinence and lack of judgement, a respectable gentleman had been made to suffer distress. We are pleased that he remains alert and watchful in his duties, but the excess salt of this case had corrupted his discretion and good sense. In future he ought to be more careful.

The lawyers heard this verdict and leapt up in joy. Pandit Alopideen came out smiling. His kinsmen and well-wishers showered money about them. An ocean of generosity overflowed, and its waves shook even the foundations of the courthouse.
When Vanshidhar came out, a rain of mocking arrows fell upon him from every side. The peons bowed low in exaggerated salutes. But at this moment, every bitter word, every sly gesture, only fanned the fire of his pride.
Perhaps had he succeeded in this case, he would not have walked away so stiff with pride. Today he had gained a strange and bitter understanding of the world — that justice and learning, grand titles, long beards, and loose flowing robes, not one of them deserves true respect.
Vanshidhar had picked a quarrel with wealth, and its price had to be paid. Scarcely a week had passed when the order of his suspension arrived. Such was the reward for his devotion to duty. The poor man, his heart broken, weighed down with sorrow and regret, set off for home. The old Munshiji had already been grumbling — he had counselled the boy all along the way before he left, but the boy had listened to not one word of it. He does everything as he pleases. Here we have borne the dunning of the liquor-seller and the butcher, and sat down in our old age playing the pious devotee, and there — nothing but a dry salary! I too held a post once, and was no man of rank either. But I did my work, did it wholeheartedly — and here you go off trying to become a man of honesty. Let the house stand in darkness, so long as a lamp is lit in the mosque! What a pity, such understanding — all his reading and learning gone entirely to waste.

A little while later, when Munshi Vanshidhar reached home in this sorry state and the old father heard the news, he struck his own head. He said — 'I feel like breaking both your head and my own.' For a long time he wrung his hands in regret upon regret. In his anger he said some harsh things too, and had Vanshidhar not slipped away just then, that anger would certainly have taken a fearsome form. The old mother, too, was grieved; her hopes of a pilgrimage to Jagannath and Rameshwar crumbled to dust. His wife did not speak to him a civil word for several days.

A week passed in this manner. It was evening. The old Munshiji sat telling his beads, murmuring the name of Ram. Just then a decorated carriage came and stopped at his door. Green and pink curtains, a matched pair of Pachhaiyan bullocks, blue thread about their necks, their horns capped in brass. Several servants walked alongside, staves upon their shoulders.

Munshiji ran out to receive the visitor and saw that it was Pandit Alopideen. He bowed low in full prostration and began to speak in flattering, obsequious words — 'Our fortune has risen indeed, that your feet should grace this doorway. You are our revered deity — with what face can we show ourselves before you, for our faces are blackened with shame. But what is to be done — the boy is a wretched, unworthy son; otherwise why should we need to hide our face from you? God may leave a man childless, but let Him never give such a child as this.'

Alopideen said, 'No, brother, do not speak so.'
Munshiji said, astonished, 'What else am I to call such a son?'
Alopideen said, in a voice full of affection, 'In this world, how many are there — men who bring glory to their lineage and honour to their ancestors, men of such righteousness that they would offer up everything they have upon the altar of duty!'
Pandit Alopideen said to Vanshidhar, 'Daroga-ji, do not take this for flattery — I need not have taken all this trouble merely to flatter you. That night, you took me into your custody by the strength of your office; but today I have come into your custody of my own free will. I have seen thousands of the wealthy and the great, I have dealt with thousands of high officials — but the one who ever truly defeated me was you. All the rest I made slaves of myself and my money, every one of them. Grant me leave to make a humble request of you.'
When Vanshidhar saw Alopideen approaching, he rose and received him with courtesy, but with his self-respect intact. He understood that this gentleman had come to shame him and taunt him further. He made no attempt to beg pardon; rather, his father's fawning words seemed to him quite unbearable. But when he heard what Panditji himself had to say, the bitterness in his heart melted away.
He looked toward Panditji with a fleeting glance. Goodwill shone plainly in his face. Now pride bowed its head before shame. Blushing, he said — 'It is only your generosity that makes you speak so. Whatever discourtesy I may have shown, I beg you to forgive it. I was bound in the fetters of duty; otherwise, I am truly your servant. Whatever you command shall be upon my head.'
Alopideen said humbly, 'On the riverbank you did not grant my request — but today you shall have to grant it.'
Vanshidhar said, 'I am hardly worthy — but whatever service lies within my power, I shall not fail to render it.'
Alopideen took out a stamped paper and, placing it before Vanshidhar, said — 'Accept this position, and set your signature to it. I am a Brahmin; until you fulfil this request, I shall not stir from your door.'
When Munshi Vanshidhar read that paper, his eyes filled with tears of gratitude. Pandit Alopideen had appointed him permanent manager of his entire estate. Besides an annual salary of six thousand, there was a separate daily allowance, a horse to ride, a bungalow to live in, and servants free of charge. In a trembling voice he said — 'Panditji, I do not have it in me to praise your generosity enough! But I am not worthy of so high a post.'
Alopideen laughed and said, 'It is precisely an unworthy man that I am in need of, just now.'
Vanshidhar said gravely, 'In any case, I am your servant. To serve a man of such renown and virtue as yourself would be my great good fortune. But I have neither the learning, nor the wisdom, nor that natural gift which could make up for these lacks. For so great a task, you need a man of deep experience and discernment.'
Alopideen took a pen from the pen-case and, placing it in Vanshidhar's hand, said — 'I want neither learning, nor experience, nor discernment, nor efficiency. I have had my fill of the worth of these qualities. Now good fortune and a rare occasion have given me that pearl before whose lustre all cleverness and learning grow dim. Take this pen, think no further, and sign. My one prayer to God is that He keep you always that same river-bank Inspector — unyielding, headstrong, harsh, but ever devoted to righteousness.'
Vanshidhar's eyes brimmed with tears. His heart, too small a vessel, could not contain so great a kindness. Once more he looked toward Panditji with eyes full of devotion and reverence, and with a trembling hand signed the paper appointing him manager.

Alopideen, overjoyed, drew him into an embrace.
