Very often a person's greatness depends upon his parents. His future life, for good or ill, depends upon his parents. The foundation of his good and bad is laid in his very childhood. While still in the cradle, while still playing on his mother's shoulder, the seed of his future life's growth is already being sown. By greatness I do not mean one's name dancing for a while on the lips of a few people in the world. In the valleys and ravines of the Himalayas there must be trees so vast and sky-touching that the world does not know their names; in some corner of the forests and wilds some lovely, fragrant flower must be blooming of which no one has caught scent. In the belly of the sea there must be pearls so round and lustrous that the world has no word of them. In the belly of the earth there must be diamonds bright as stars, of which mankind has yet had no glimpse. Above, in the boundless sky, there must be endless stars that even the most far-reaching telescope has not yet seen. I do not take greatness to mean being known to the world. I hold that whoever is becoming free of fault, whoever is slowly rising higher, and is aware of it, is truly becoming great. It is the parents who create this very disposition toward growing great in a person. It is a divine gift received from one's parents. Knowingly or unknowingly, it is the parents who make a child small or make him great.

A person's education begins even before he is born. The soul enters the mother's womb in the form of the embryo, and even before that, the preparation for his education is already underway. Whatever thoughts the parents have entertained in their own lives before conception, whatever feelings they have let play in their hearts, whatever deeds they have done — out of all of these, the very books for the new child's education are being prepared. It is not only the parents who teach in this world; the whole surrounding world, all of animate and inanimate creation, teaches too. But it is the parents who teach what is to be learned from this surrounding creation. The largest share in a child's education belongs to the parents, and among them, the greater share belongs to the mother. The soul dwelt, to begin with, in the mother's womb itself; it came out into the world having become one with the mother — as though it came out still belonging to her. Even after coming out, in childhood at least, most of its time is spent in the mother's company. It laughs by its mother's side; it cries by its mother's side; it eats and drinks by its mother's side; it plays and frolics by its mother's side, it sleeps, it falls asleep, by its mother's side — its whole daily round of rising and settling goes on close to the mother. That is why the mother is, in truth, the real giver of education.

The mother gives the body, and she gives the mind too. She is the one who brings the child into the world, and she is the one who gives it knowledge as well. The impressions made upon a child in its early years are the most enduring of all. In childhood a child's mind is empty. Just as a beggar, one who has gone hungry for days, is driven to snatch at whatever morsel comes his way, good or bad, without choosing, so too a child's empty mind, greedy and quick, gathers into itself, without any sorting, whatever happens to be around it. If a two- or three-month-old infant is left out in the courtyard, the green, green trees round about are said to leave such an effect upon its mind and its body that even its very disposition takes on their colour, so the women say — meaning only this, that in childhood the mind is extremely receptive to impressions. It is like clay, like wax; it will take on whatever shape is given to it.

If the mother eats oily food, the child will get a cough; if the mother drinks sugarcane juice or mango juice, the child will catch a chill — in just the same way, if the mother quarrels and rages in front of the child, the child's mind will catch a kind of cough. But mothers forget this. A mother's speech, her walk, her laughter and manner, all of the mother's doings that take place within the child's little world, are the very milk of the child's mind, intellect, and heart. If a mother's eyes are red with jealousy while she nurses her child, the child's mind too will grow prone to anger.

In this way a child's education depends upon the mother, upon the father, upon relatives, upon the whole of the animate and inanimate world around it. One must be very careful in the presence of children. One must keep the surrounding atmosphere clean. Whether the sun and moon know it or not, it is true that lotuses bloom by their rays. Whether parents and other people know it or not, it is true that the buds of children's lives bloom through their deeds. Just as the sun's and moon's rays are, so will human dealings, the doings of parents, be — if they are clean, radiant, and free of darkness, children's minds will bloom like lotuses, full of sap, fragrant, lovely, and pure; otherwise they will become worm-eaten, diseased, pallid, colourless, and impure.

There is no sin like spoiling a child's life. There is no sin like fouling the water of a clean spring. Those who live near children should always bear this in mind. The sage Vasishtha says to the god Varuna in the Veda, 'O Varuna! If any wrong has been done by my hand, hold my elders responsible for it.'

By his good fortune, Shyam had been given a great mother. Every day he offered thanks to his mother in his heart. Sometimes he would offer her a libation of a few tears. His friends at the ashram often asked him about the story of his life, but Shyam would not tell it. All the other companions at the ashram would share with one another the various good and bad experiences of their own lives. Listening to his friends' life-stories, Shyam's eyes would sometimes suddenly fill with tears. At such times, memories of just such things from his own life would come back to him. 'Shyam, you listen to everyone else's story; but why is it, tell us, that you never say anything about your own?' his friends often asked him.

One day just such urging was going on. Shyam said, his voice full, 'Remembering my own past life feels very sorrowful to me, because along with the good of my past life I remember the bad as well; along with the merit I remember the sin too. I am digging deep pits and burying each of my faults in them, one by one. My struggle is so that these ghosts should not rise up again and sit upon my neck. Shyam's loving friend Ram said, 'Are we strangers to one another? Haven't you and we become one by now? In our ashram there is nothing private any longer. We are one. Whatever there is belongs to everyone. Why then do you keep your treasury of experience hidden away? We don't mean to argue with you. What pride, what conceit could there be in telling us? This sweetness in your life, this simplicity, this tenderness, this love, this gentle smile, this spirit of service, this freedom from ego, this readiness to do any task without shame — where has it all come from? Tell us. We too nurse the sick, you nurse them too; but you become the sick person's mother — why can't we manage that? With just your gentle smile you make another person your own; but even sitting and talking with someone for four hours together, why can't we draw his heart to us the way you do? Tell us, where did you get this magic? Tell us, who mixed this fragrance into your life? Who poured in this musk? Shyam, do you know the legend from Varhad? Once, in Varhad, a wealthy merchant was building a grand mansion. At that time a Nepali musk-seller came there to sell musk. The wealthy merchant asked the musk-seller his price. The musk-seller said contemptuously, "What would you poor people of the south do with musk? Let me go on to Pune — perhaps I'll find some buyers there!" The wealthy merchant grew angry. He said, "Weigh out all your musk. I will mix it into that mud plaster. Go and tell them up north that people of the south build walls of musk." The merchant bought all the musk and had it mixed into the plaster. They say that to this day, the walls of that house in Varhad still smell of musk. Shyam, when the walls of your life were being built, who was it, tell us, who poured musk into them there? Our lives have neither scent nor form nor fragrance! Where did this fragrance in your life come from? Who gave it this colour — tell us.'

My mother is my guru, my mother is my wish-fulfilling tree — what did she not give me! What did she not give me? She gave everything! It was she who taught me to look with love, to speak with love. It was she who taught me that however great the toil, one should carry on one's work as well as possible without a word of complaint. It was she who taught me how to make a feast of mere husks, and how, even in poverty, to keep one's self-respect and one's worth without losing them. Of all that my mother taught, I have not managed to bring even a fraction into my own life. The seed is still swelling in the soil of my mind.
