A Prayer for Forgiveness
Outside, the moonlight lay thick and white. Everyone was sitting on the terrace of the temple. The distant river current looked like a stream of silver. The river knows no rest. Ceaseless flowing is all it knows. Its prayer — a prayer of action — goes on unbroken, twenty-four hours a day. Even as it performs its task, it sometimes hums a tune, sometimes laughs, sometimes plays, sometimes turns grave, sometimes flushes red with anger. A river is a beautiful and solemn mystery. Shyam stood simply gazing at that river. The beauty of creation would make Shyam lose himself entirely. Sometimes, watching a lovely sunset, he would fall as if into a trance, and the following lines would come pouring from his lips:—

Staying hidden behind it all, you work your magic, / You paint these scenes of splendor, O great and mighty Painter.

However much I gaze and gaze, I am never sated with the sight, / A hundred feelings come surging up and set my heart astir.

Was he lost in just such a trance this time too? Ram went up to him and said, 'Shyam! Everyone has arrived; come to the prayer. Everyone is waiting.'

'Yes. I simply stood there looking,' Shyam said, and went and sat down in the place kept for him. The prayer was said, and the story began.

Friends! Culture is woven into every single thing. Every community has its own particular culture. All of them together make up the culture of a nation. The fragrance of culture is present in every custom. It must be recognized. We must pay attention to all our own customs and practices. Some useless customs ought to be given up; but the customs that nurture and sustain our culture must not be allowed to die. Every practice in our country, in our society, is in itself a teaching.

In our house there was a custom that at the main midday meal each day, everyone had to recite a shloka. If one did not recite a shloka while eating, Father would scold. Father also taught us beautiful shlokas — he taught us the lovely verses and poems of Moropant and Vamanpandit. He also taught us other stotras, bhupalis, shlokas, and so on. As soon as it was dawn, Father would come and wake us. He would sit on our bedding and begin teaching us bhupalis and shlokas. We would sit up in bed, still wrapped in our godhadis. In my childhood we had no blankets — a godhadi, a pasodi, or Mother's folded four-fold cloth served us both as covering and as bedding. Father taught us bhupalis of Ganpati, of the Ganga, and others. Even today the line 'Kani kundalachi prabha chandrasurya jaisa nabha' feels sweet to me. He taught us Sanskrit shlokas such as Vakratunda Mahakaya, Shantakaram, Vasudevasutam Devam, Krishnaya Vasudevaya, and also aryas and verses like Gange Gode Yamune, Krishnanuja Subhadra, Kunkummandit Janake, Devi mhane anarya, Ye rathavari jhani Yadu-raya, Asa yeta dekhe, Maravе majala, Ang vakra adhari dhari pavu, and so on. We had these shlokas by heart in our childhood. Every day he would teach us a new one. Father did not simply have us learn them by rote — he explained their meaning too. 'Who is Saumitra?' he would ask. If we could not tell him, he would ask again. 'Who is Lakshman's mother?' We would answer, 'Saumitra' — 'Then what does Saumitra mean?' We would guess, 'Lakshman.' 'Well done, bravo!' he would say, praising us. Having explained the meaning of Saumitra, he would then ask who Radheya was, who Saubhadra was, and so on. It was as though he taught according to the very science of pedagogy. Because of Father's method, the meaning of hundreds of Sanskrit words had come to be understood by us.

If Father taught at dawn, Mother taught in the evening. 'Divya divya deepotkar, kani kundal motihar, diva dekhun namaskar' — or, 'Tilache tel kapasachi vat, diva teve madhyanrat, diva teve devapashi, majha namaskar sarva devanchya payapashi.'

and other such verses Mother would teach us. Because of this, we too got into the habit of memorizing verses on our own. At the midday meal, if we recited a shloka Father had not taught us but which we had memorized ourselves, Father would praise us for it. This encouraged us greatly. Wherever there was a wedding feast, a thread-ceremony feast, or a festival celebration in the village, there too children would recite shlokas. Whoever recited well was praised by everyone. In this way, both at home and abroad in the village, there was encouragement to memorize shlokas. While eating, one's ears would catch beautiful poetry, verses of noble thought — it was as if it were an offering made to the sages themselves.

Whenever there was a dinner-feast anywhere in the village, we would surely be invited too. If Father happened to have come along with us, he would signal to us with a nod or a glance to recite a shloka, and we would recite one at once. There was the fear that Father would be angry once we got home if we did not. Although I knew plenty of good shlokas, I was shy in company. My voice was not particularly good, nor was I bold before an audience. From childhood I have been afraid of society and of its criticism. I am a shy bird by nature. Even now I have not become very tame. I become flustered at once. If, while I was reciting a shloka, someone laughed, or someone criticized me, it would hurt me; but when Father was present, I had no choice but to recite, however reluctantly. There was no escaping it there.

That day there was a feast at Gangu-appa Oak's house. We were on very close terms with that family. We had been invited. My father had gone out of town. I had felt shy about going to eat at someone else's house ever since I was small; but someone had to go. Our presence had to be registered. Otherwise it would have looked like arrogance, like conceit. It would have hurt their feelings. Since Father was not at home, it fell to me to go for the meal.

In the afternoon word came that it was time to bathe, and a little later I went to eat. Kanher-rangoli patterns had been drawn. There were beautiful banana leaves. I went and sat down on a wooden seat. The fragrance of incense sticks hung heavy in the air. Since it was the hot season, the big water-urns had cloths tied round the outside and vetiver root put in the water. Enquiries were made as to who from each household had come and who had not. If someone who was expected had not come, a boy would be sent to their house carrying a small ladle and a water-pot as a summons. Once everyone had arrived, the leaves were sprinkled with water, and with a cry of 'Har Har Mahadev' everyone sat down to eat.
I was eating quietly. The reciting of shlokas began. The boys launched into a regular volley of shlokas. Various boys were receiving praise. The women were serving the food. If some woman's son was eating in the row, she would ask her son, 'Bandya! Have you recited your shloka? Recite it now.' Reciting a shloka was regarded as both good conduct and an ornament of character. 'Shyam! Won't you recite a shloka? You know so many good ones. Say that 'Chaitanya sumanam,' or else 'Didim dimmin dimmin—.' I was being urged. I felt shy and could not summon the courage to recite. 'You're just like a girl!' said Govindbhat, who sat beside me. I bore it all in silence. I was rubbing the copper coin given as dakshina in the curry to make it shine, paying no attention to what the others were reciting. One boy got up before everyone else had finished eating, and everyone gave him a good tongue-lashing for it. To get up early was considered an insult to the whole row of diners.
The meal ended. Everyone got up. I never ate betel-nut. Father would be very angry if I chewed betel-nut. It was the custom that a student should not eat betel-nut or a paan. I came home. Since it was Saturday, school had a half-day holiday. Mother asked, 'Well, how was the meal? What vegetables had they made?' I told her the whole account. Mother asked, 'Did you recite a shloka or not?'
Now what was I to answer? One lie calls for another. Once one false step is taken, a second false step must be taken to steady it. Sin breeds sin. It makes itself take root. I lied to Mother, saying, 'I recited a shloka.'

Again I lied, saying I had recited the shloka 'Netri don hire prakash pasare.' My father was very fond of this shloka, and it is indeed a sweet one. Shall I recite the whole of it for you?

I was telling Mother all these lies when the neighborhood boys came in. Playing pranks on one another, finding fault with one another, getting one another beaten — this is the nature of boys. Bandya, Banya, and Vasu from next door all came in and said to Mother, 'Yashoda-kaku! Your Shyam did not recite any shloka today. Everyone kept telling him to recite, recite, but he never did.'

'It was Shyam himself who taught me 'Bharuni gagan-tati shuddh nakshatra-ratne' — I recited that, and I got praised for it,' said Vasu.
Govinda said, 'I recited 'Asa yeta dekhe rath nikat to Shyamal Hari' and Narsu-anna praised me for it.'

Banya said, 'Oh, he must have recited it in his mind — how would we hear that?'
Bandya said, 'But surely God must have heard it!' The boys teased me and went off. Boys are, in truth, the judges of a village. They will let nothing of anyone's stay hidden. They are the very newspapers that bring everyone's secrets out into the open square!
Mother said to me, 'Shyam! Not reciting the shloka is one mistake, but lying about it is a far more terrible mistake! Go and touch God's feet and say, I will never lie again.' I stood there struck dumb. Mother said again, 'Go, touch God's feet. Otherwise, when your father comes home, I shall tell him; then you will get a beating, you will have to hear him out.' I did not budge from where I stood. I thought Mother would not tell Father; she would forget. Today's anger of hers would fade by tomorrow. Mother said again, 'You won't listen, will you? Very well! I won't say another word.'
Father had come back from out of town that very night. As usual he came at dawn to wake us. He taught us the bhupalis, and we recited them. Father asked me, 'Shyam! Which shloka did you recite yesterday?'
Mother was churning buttermilk. Her shadow danced upon the wall. One had to stand to churn buttermilk. The churning-pot was large, its mouth wide too. Mother suddenly stopped churning and said, 'Shyam did not recite any shloka yesterday; but he came and lied to me, saying he had. But the neighborhood boys told me the whole true story. I was telling him to go and touch God's feet and say he would not lie again; but however much I told him, he simply would not listen.'
Father heard this and said angrily, 'Is that so? Get up — are you going to get up or not? Go stand by that wall. Did you recite a shloka yesterday or not?'
Seeing Father's anger, I was frightened. Weeping, I said, 'I didn't recite it.' 'Then why did you lie about it? I have told you a hundred times not to tell lies.' Father's anger and his voice were rising. Trembling, I said, 'I won't ever lie again.'
'And your mother was telling you to go touch God's feet, and you would not listen even to that. Don't you know one is supposed to obey one's parents? Have you grown so headstrong?' It seemed Father was about to get up and beat me. Weeping, I went to Mother and laid my head upon her feet. My burning-hot tears fell upon her feet. 'Mother! I have done wrong, forgive me,' I said. Mother could not speak. She was the very embodiment of tenderness. Seeing me reduced to a state like a clod of earth dissolved in water, she felt for me; but, mastering her own feelings, she said, 'Go, touch God's feet. Pray to Him and tell Him — do not let me ever have the wish to lie again.'

I stood before God. Sobbing and sobbing, I prostrated myself before Him in prayer. Then I went again and stood by the wall.

Father's anger had cooled by now. 'Come here,' he said to me. I went to him. He drew me close. He passed his hand over my back and said, 'Go now — isn't there school?'
I said, 'Today is Sunday, there's a holiday today.'

Father said, 'Then rest a while if you like. Or will you come with me to the field? We'll bring back some leaves for the leaf-plates too.' I said yes.

My father's temperament was a very clever one. In an instant he had changed the whole atmosphere. The clouds of anger passed, and the light of love spread out, as though nothing at all had happened. Father and son, we went off to the field together. My mother was love incarnate, and yet, when the occasion demanded, she could be stern. In her very sternness lay her true love, her true tenderness. Sometimes with a stern love and sometimes with a sweet one, Mother shaped this Shyam of hers, shaped all of us. Sometimes she caressed us with love; sometimes she thrashed us in anger. By both means she was giving me form, giving shape to this shapeless, indolent lump of clay. Both cold and warmth bring growth; both day and night bring increase. Constant, unbroken light brings only ruin. That is why a certain poem says:—
By turns bestowing tenderness and wrath, / the mother brings the portion of the child's mind to bloom.
A tree flowers only after enduring both heat and cold — / this alone, in this world, is the way of growth.
