Thirty-eighth Night: Mother's Final Illness
Shyam had fallen ill. He had a fever too, and lay there with his eyes closed.
"Shyam! Shall I press your feet?" Govinda asked.
"No, what good will pressing my feet do! There's no need to wait on me like this. Go and do your own work. Finish weaving Mohan Patil's cloth quickly. Go on — what's to be gained sitting here beside me? I'll just lie quietly repeating Ram, Ram." Shyam said.
"Shyam! When someone falls ill, we go to them. If someone in our own ashram falls ill, shouldn't we sit by him?" Ram asked.
"Why, am I so very ill! You all love me too much. However much I eat, you don't feel I've eaten my fill. Even when I'm well, you don't believe I'm well. Even when I'm not ill, you'll make me ill at this rate. You're being foolish — if it were something serious, some real ailment, then sit by me. It's only when you all go off to work that I'll feel truly well. Govinda, you go. Ram, you go and card too!" At Shyam's firm insistence, everyone left.
By evening Shyam was feeling somewhat better. Sitting up in bed, he was spinning thread, and reciting the following sweet verse as he worked.
Let nothing else seem good or pleasing to me but You,
let my soul cling ever to Your feet alone,
let You alone be my one obsession,
Govind, Hare, Mukund — upon my lips.
let You alone be my one refrain,
let all vain wrangling come to an end,
let there be but one loving bond, to You,
Govind, Hare, Mukund — upon my lips.
"Well now? Just arrived?" Shyam asked.
"Will you tell a story tonight?" a little boy asked.
"Yes, I'll tell one. Come along." Shyam said.
"Look, we've brought you some lovely stones. We went for a walk on that hill." a boy said, and set the stones down beside Shyam.
"Truly, how beautiful these are! Come, let's make pictures out of them. I'll make a parrot!" Shyam said, and began arranging the pebbles into the shape of a parrot.
The children handed him the pebbles one by one.
"Now I need a small red pebble for the beak," Shyam said.
"Here, take this one, see, this one's good." a boy said. Shyam placed the pebble, and a lovely little parrot took shape.
"Now make a peacock, a peacock." another boy said.
"You make the peacock yourselves." Shyam said.
"We can't make it well." he said.
"But now you all go home. Eat quickly and come back." Shyam told them.
"Come on, let's go eat and come back." said one of the older, more sensible boys, and those little birds flew off.
Shyam sat gazing at those many-colored pebbles. The thought came to him of how much beauty God had poured into these small stones, and he pressed the pebbles to his heart. It was as though they were so many little images of the ocean of beauty that is the Supreme Spirit itself. He was having, in some small measure, the experience that to a devotee, images of God appear on every side. A kind of tenderness graced his face.
Govinda, Ram, Namdev — they all gathered around him.
"Shyam! What's in your hands? A flower?" Ram asked.
"Why, do I ever touch a flower with these soiled, sinful hands of mine? I only fold my hands to it from a distance." Shyam said.
"Then what's in your hands?" Namdev asked.
"Images of God." Shyam said.
"Didn't you give away your Ganapati idol to Babu?" Bhika asked.
"Yes, but I still have any number of images with me." Shyam said.
"Let's see, what kind are they?" Govinda said, and taking hold of Shyam's hands, opened his fist. Out of that fist tumbled rubies and pearls.
"These are my diamonds, these are my gods. People say pearls lie at the bottom of the sea and diamonds in the belly of the earth. But to me, diamonds and pearls appear in the sand of every river and on the crest of every hill. See what colors they have!" Shyam said, showing them.
"Shyam, you'll speak tonight, won't you?" Ram asked.
"Yes, I've told those children to come back after eating. They're the ones who brought me these lovely stones. They're the ones who gave me this joy, this new spirit. I could speak for two whole hours now, even. Isn't it about time for prayer?" Shyam asked.
It was indeed time for prayer. Shyam sat with a covering drawn over him. When the prayer was over, he began to speak.
At the time of the seizure, our Durva Granny had not been at home; she had gone off somewhere to her own village, and now she returned. From that day on, Mother was confined entirely to her bed. Fever stayed in her body and would not leave. And who was there, after all, to nurse her? Granny did what she could. Radhatai would come now and then, bringing Mother preserved amla or the like; sometimes she brought her bile-medicine mixed in juice of raw mango. Janakivayni, Namumavshi, and others would come as well.
But who was to do the housework now? Who would bathe the neighbor's Sharad? The two rupees Mother used to earn had now stopped coming in. Whenever Father came near, Durva Granny would seethe with anger and mutter under her breath.
"How on earth is one supposed to cook, curse it? Not a stick to put in the stove, not a lump of dung-fuel; no oil to put in the vegetables, no salt. Am I to boil plain rice and vegetables and serve that?" Durva Granny went on grumbling.
My father said to her quietly, "Just boil plain rice and serve it to us, Dwarkakakku! Our honor is already gone. Don't waste any more of it."
That day Mother said to Purushottam, "Purushottam! Write a letter to your Mavshi. Now, at this final hour, she alone will be of use. Write to her, and she will come. I've asked Radhatai for a postcard — go and fetch it; or else tell her I'm calling Indu instead, that she should write it well. Go, child, go and bring her."
Purushottam told Indu, and Indu came with the postcard.
"Yashodabai! Is it worse today? Shall I press your forehead a little?" that loving girl asked.
"No need, Indu, that you asked is enough. Pressing my forehead only makes it hurt more. I've called you to write a letter. I must write to my sister, to Sakhu. Write her my whole story, and write that I have called for her. You'll know best how to word it." Mother said.
Indu wrote the letter and addressed it. Purushottam went and dropped it in the post box. Indu's baby had woken at home, so Indu left.
"Child, give me some water!" Mother said to my little brother. He at once began pouring it straight into her mouth. "Pour it with a spoon into my mouth, use the little ladle from the worship things if there's no spoon about," Mother told him. Purushottam gave her water to drink just as she had told him.
"Come, Janakibai, come, sit down." Janakibai had come to inquire after her.
"Shall I press your feet a little?" she asked.
"No need to press anything. These bones of mine, Janakibai, truly hurt more when pressed. Just sit close by, that's enough." Mother said.
"Shall I bring you an amla sweet? It might give your tongue a little taste of something." Janakibai asked.
"Bring me a piece, then." Mother said in a feeble voice.
"Come, Purushottam, I'll give you a piece — take it to your mother." Janakivayni said, and went off. Purushottam went along with her and came back with the amla sweet she gave him. Mother held a small piece in her mouth. Purushottam sat near her.
"Go on, child, go play outside a bit; don't go to school just now. Go to school the day I'm feeling better. Who else is there here?" Mother said, running her hand over his back.
Purushottam went outside to play.
In the afternoon Namumavshi came to see Mother. She was Mother's friend from childhood; she had been married within the same village. As children the two of them had played at cooking, at hundi-borkhada; together they had sung ovis on the swing; together they had worshipped Mangalagaur; they had gone to each other's homes for vasolya. Namumavshi could not come to see Mother very often — her house stood at the far end of the village, and besides, she herself was not always well.
"Come, Namu, how are you? Your feet had swollen a little, how are they now?" Mother asked Namu.
"They're better. I had them fomented with champak leaves and the swelling has gone down. But how are you? You've grown thin as a rail. Won't the fever leave your body?" Namumavshi said, laying a hand on Mother.
"Namu, Purushottam will go with you — send back a little pot of oil with him. There isn't a drop of oil left in the house. Dwarkakakku keeps shouting about it. You understand everything, I needn't spell it out. Are you well-off yourself? You're poor too, but you're not a stranger to me — that's why I've asked." Mother said.
"Of course, why, there's nothing to it. Don't take it so much to heart — you take everything to heart, that's your real sickness. Your children need you. Take courage." Namu said.
"I have no wish left to live now. Whatever joys were to be had, I've had enough of them." Mother said.
"Don't talk like that in the twilight hour. Tomorrow I'll bring you some soft rice-gruel cooked in a little pot. You'll eat it, won't you?" Namumavshi asked.
"Namu! I feel I should just close my eyes now. What a shamed, humiliating life this has become!" Mother said, her eyes filling with tears.
"Now why say such things? You'll get well, and good days will come. Your Shyam, your Gajanan, they'll grow up into fine men. Has Gajanan found work yet?" Namu asked.
"He found it a month ago. But the pay is only nineteen rupees. Living in Bombay — what will he eat, what will he send home? He tutors on the side too. Just the other day five rupees came from him. He must be pinching his own stomach to send it." Mother said.
"Have you let Shyam know about your illness?" Namu asked. "I told them not to tell him. He must be studying hard, poor boy, out there. Why worry him for nothing? Would he even have the money to come? And when he does come, he'll need money again to go back. Do these long journeys happen without money? When he was nearby, at Kapat, he could come whenever he liked; but he's gone far away now, for his studies. May God keep him happy, that's enough for me. What does it matter about me?" Mother said.
Namumavshi got up to leave. "Put on your kunku, will you." Mother said. "There's the box in the niche there." Namumavshi put kunku on her own forehead and put some on Mother too, and then went away.
"Aai! Look, here's Mavshi's letter. I understood every word of it. Shall I read it?" Purushottam said, and he read out Mavshi's letter to her. Mavshi's handwriting was clear and bold. Mavshi was coming. Mother was overjoyed. Just then Indu arrived.
"Indu! Sakhu is coming tomorrow. You wrote the letter, didn't you! Look, here's her reply. Give it to Indutai." Mother said to Purushottam.
Indutai read the letter and said, "I'll get to see her at last. You've told me stories about her so often — I've been wondering when I'd get to meet her." Just then Indu's mother called out to her. "Purushottam! Come along to our house. Mother's made sanja, come." Indu said.
"Go, child, they're not strangers to us." Mother told him, and so he went.
"Because of me you've come to such misery. I cannot even give you proper food and drink. I am an unlucky man — what else can I do?" Father sat beside Mother, saying.
"Why do you say such things? If you yourself go limp and start weeping, what is little Purushottam to do? Men must never lose heart. Don't take any of this to your own heart. It was on your strength that I once leapt for joy — I enjoyed every happiness, I rolled in prosperity. I never wanted for anything, truly. A few hard days have come now; they will pass. Even if I do not live to see it, you will see your children's prosperity with your own eyes. I will come and settle in your eyes, I promise you." Mother was saying.
"You too will get well. Sakhu is coming — she'll nurse you back to health." Father said.
"Why false hope now! The tree has been hollowed out from within, and it will fall, surely. I will turn to gold. I will go with my hands full, a married woman still in her fullness I will go. It grieves me only for your sake — who will you have? Otherwise, what am I lacking? To die on your lap, close beside you — what greater fortune could there be? Beside this fortune all other happiness is worthless. Because of the joy of this fortune, even all my sorrows feel to me like joys." So Mother spoke, and laid her burning hand upon Father's lap. The speaking had left Mother exhausted.
"Water — give me a little water with your own hand." Mother said tenderly. Father poured a little water into her mouth from the little jug.
"Water from your hand is the sacred Ganges itself; it is sweeter than nectar. Sit here beside me today. Don't go anywhere. I'll close my eyes and meditate upon you." So saying, taking Father's hand in her own, Mother closed her eyes and began her meditation. It was a sight so noble, so moving, so sanctified.

Just then Radhatai arrived. Seeing Father seated there, she was turning to go back.
"Come in. Indu's mother, come in." said Father courteously, and rose and stepped outside. Radhatai sat down beside Mother. She ran her hand over Mother's hair, smoothing it a little. "Your sister's coming at dawn, I hear?" she asked. "Yes, a letter came. Indu read it." Mother said.
"She's the one who told me. It's good — it does one good to have someone who loves one nearby." Radhatai said.
"Everyone here loves me. He is near, and I have your good neighborliness besides — what more could I want?" Mother said.
Radhatai sat a while longer, then left.
Mavshi was to arrive at dawn. How early Purushottam had woken! He kept listening for the sound of every passing cart. The bullock carts bringing passengers from the boat would come to Palgad around that early hour. The moment a cart seemed to slow near the gate, Purushottam would run out to look. But the cart would go on past. At last one cart drew up right by our compound.
"It's stopped right at our compound!" Granny said. Durva Granny was mopping the floor at the time. Purushottam ran off. Father too went forward. Yes indeed — it was Mavshi who had come. Purushottam ran up with a little basket. Father brought the trunk. Mavshi had brought a bedding-roll with her. The cart-driver took his fare and went off.
"Aai, Mavshi's come! Look, she's really come." Purushottam said, shaking Mother awake — at that early hour Mother had been dreaming.
"She's come? Then my way is clear at last!" Mother said. She was half in consciousness, half still waking. Mavshi sat down beside Mother. After so many, many years, sister was meeting sister! Seeing Mother's state, seeing that body of skin and bone, Mavshi's eyes filled with tears.
"Akka!" Mavshi called out. In that call, in those two syllables, all of Mavshi's loving and generous heart was poured out.
"You've come, Sakhu, sit. I was waiting only for you. I kept thinking, when will you come! But you've come quickly. I was holding my very breath, keeping it in — I thought, you would come, and I would place these children in your lap, entrust them into the fold of your sari, and then go. Sakhu!" Mother began to weep.
"Akka! Why talk so, like someone out of her senses. I've come now. You'll get well now, you will. Let yourself get better, and then I'll take you and Purushottam away with me. I have a job now." Mavshi said.
"No, no more going anywhere now. Let me go only to God now. Let this body fall right here in this hut. It was I who insisted, who had this hut built — this house of my own, built by my own will. Let my body fall right here, in this palace of mine. Let death come to me on his lap, with you close by. They say, let the mother die but let the aunt live — let that saying come true. Sakhu! You have no child, no little one of your own. God brought your household to its end early — as though He made you for the sake of my children alone. Do everything for my children. Be their mother now, you yourself!" Mother went on speaking.
"Akka! Why talk like this? Don't speak. Speaking tires you out. Lie down a little. I'll pat you to sleep." So saying, Mavshi laid the blanket she had brought over Mother. Besides a folded quilt and a patched cotton coverlet, she had never known any such thing as a blanket.
Mavshi sat there truly patting Mother to sleep. The purity of the Ganga and the Yamuna was present there. There was the solemnity of the meeting of Dawn and Night.
