'Ram! Move that lamp aside. I don't want the light in my eyes,' Shyam said.
Today it was raining a little outside. A cool wind was blowing. So everyone was sitting indoors. Ordinarily the prayer and this story-telling took place right under the open sky! The lamp bothered Shyam. Ram began to move the lamp aside; but would Bhika listen to any of it! 'If the lamp is here, we can see the expressions on your face. We listen with our ears and watch with our eyes. Your words have their effect, and so does the expression on your face. If merely listening were enough, plays could be performed in the dark too,' Bhika said.
'I am not performing any play; I am telling you the words of my own heart,' Shyam said.
'We're not saying it's a play. But looking at your face too has its effect. Ramtirtha used to speak in Japan — he spoke in English; yet even Japanese people who knew no English would go to hear his lectures. The expressions on Ramtirtha's face made everything understood to them, as it were,' Namdev said.
'All right, let the lamp be. Whatever brings you joy brings joy to me too,' Shyam said, and began the story:
One day, when we were small, we were playing in the yard. The tulsi-yard was very long and broad. In the tulsi-yard there stood a very tall beheda tree. Suddenly there came a sound — thud. My younger brother and I went to see what had made the sound. Something had certainly fallen. We began searching all around. As we searched, we found a little bird's fledgling that had fallen from the tree. Its little chest was heaving. It had fallen from a great height. It was in a terrible state, all crumpled up. It had not yet grown proper feathers. It could not even open its eyes properly. Its whole body kept shaking steadily, rising and falling, like the bellows of a blacksmith. The moment we touched it, it would stretch its whole neck forward and cry out pitifully, chee-chee. I decided to carry this fledgling into the house. We took it up in a piece of cloth and went inside. There were just the two of us, my younger brother and I. I put down cotton and laid the fledgling on it. We too were small children. What could we possibly do? We began doing whatever occurred to our childish minds. We began giving the fledgling grain and water. We fetched fine broken rice-grains and put them into its beak, and with a small watering-can we dripped drops of water into its beak. Whether the fledgling could even eat or not, whether our very anxiety, our very act of putting water and grain into its beak, might itself kill it — we never even thought of that.

In this world, mere love, mere compassion alone is not enough. To make life beautiful and successful, three qualities are needed. The first is love. The second is knowledge. And the third is strength. Whoever possesses all three of these — love, knowledge, and strength — can achieve fulfillment in this world. Knowledge without love is useless too; love without knowledge is wasted too; strength without love and knowledge, and love and knowledge without strength, are equally useless. If I have strength in my body but no love for others, that strength will only be misused. I may have knowledge, but if I have no love for others, I will not give others the benefit of that knowledge; and if I have love but no knowledge, that very love will do harm. A mother may love her child, but if she does not know how to nurse it when it is ill, then out of blind love she may give it things it should not eat, and her very love will end up killing the child! Suppose the mother has both love and knowledge, but is herself weak and disabled — even then, the benefit of her love and knowledge will not reach the child. Life needs the development of love, knowledge, and strength together. Love is the development of the heart; knowledge is the development of the intellect; and strength is the development of the body. The growth of body, mind, and intellect together — this is what life needs.
We loved that fledgling, but we had no knowledge. We filled its beak with flour, broken rice, all sorts of things, and kept pouring water into it! Poor helpless creature! It was our very ignorant love that was tormenting it. In the end it let its head droop! I said to it, 'We are not going to shut you up in a cage! Get well, and fly back to your mother. We are not cruel — please don't die, if only for your mother's sake! She must be crying pitifully somewhere. She must be circling about looking for you.'
The fledgling paid no attention to our words. I said to Mother, 'Mother! Look at this fledgling, see what it's doing! It won't even lift its head. What should I give it to eat?'
Mother came out. She took the fledgling tenderly in her hands and said, 'Shyam! This one is not going to live. Let it die in peace. Don't keep touching it again and again. It is in pain. It fell from a very great height, poor thing!' Saying this, Mother laid the fledgling back down on the cotton and went off inside to attend to her housework. We kept watching the fledgling. At last it opened its beak wide and died. It was gone, its life was gone! Its parents, its kin, none of them were near it. We felt very sad. We decided we would bury it properly.
We went and asked Mother, 'Mother! Where should we bury this fledgling? Tell us a good spot.' Mother said, 'Bury it near that sevanti plant, or near that mogra. The sevanti plant will bear beautiful flowers, and the mogra flowers will look even more fresh and lovely. Because you have given that fledgling love, that love the fledgling will not forget. It will come to you in those flowers, and give you their sweet fragrance.'
I said, 'Just like the story of Sonasakhali, isn't it? Sonasakhali's own mother killed her and buried her, and a pomegranate tree was planted over her; but Sonasakhali came in the pomegranate to meet her father. This fledgling will come the same way, won't it? Then how lovely the sevanti flowers will look! They'll smell so sweet, won't they, Mother?'
Mother said, 'Go and bury it quickly. One should not keep the dead lying about for long.'
'Give us a nice piece of cloth to wrap it in,' I said. Mother had an old, torn, brocaded blouse. Mother tore off a piece of that blouse and gave it to us. We wrapped the fledgling in that silk cloth. We went to where the flowering plants were. Among the sevanti and the mogra we began digging a little pit for it. Tears were flowing from our eyes. The earth was being made sacred by our tears. We dug the pit and put flowers into it. Upon those flowers we laid the fledgling's body, wrapped in that cloth; but we could not bring ourselves to push the earth over it! We could not bring ourselves to heap earth on that soft, lovely little body, softer than butter. At last, closing our eyes, we pushed the earth over it. So that no cat should dig up the little grave, we placed a nice stone on top, and came back home. We sat down in a corner of the inner room and wept.
'Why are you sitting off in the corner?' Mother asked.
'Mother! I am going to observe mourning-impurity for that bird!' I said.
Mother laughed and said, 'You silly boy, there's no need to observe sutak for it.'
I said, 'Don't we observe it whenever someone in our own house dies?'
Mother said, 'A person dies of some disease or other, and that is why those close to him do well to keep apart from others for some days — because there are epidemic diseases, and their germs must not be allowed to spread. That is why sutak is observed. Did that bird have any disease? The poor thing simply fell from above and lost its life!'
I was astonished to hear Mother's words. 'Mother! Who told you all this?' I asked.
Mother said, 'Wasn't there some gentleman who came and sat on the veranda once, and wasn't he saying just this? I heard it, and it seemed true to me. Go, wash your hands and feet, that will do. Don't feel bad about it. You gave that creature love, you did a good thing. God too will love you for it. If ever you fall ill and your mother is not near you, He will make some other friend stand by you. Whatever you give to God's little creatures — the ants, the insects, the beasts and birds — God multiplies it a hundredfold and gives it back to you. A single seed sown returns as a full, laden ear of grain. Shyam! You showed love to a bird; go on and show the same love to one another later in life too. Otherwise you may love beasts and birds, and yet look upon your own brothers as enemies. Don't ever do that. All of you brothers must never forget one another. You have only one sister — never let her feel neglected; give her your love in full measure.'
As Mother said this, her voice had grown choked with feeling. Was she thinking of how my father's brothers had treated him? Or was she thinking that although she herself was always unwell, her own brothers had never once taken her anywhere for a change of air, and that this was why she felt so sad? Whatever her own feelings may have been, what she said was true. We feed sugar to ants, but we wring the necks of our fellow men! We love cats and parrots, but do we not see that we do not love our own neighbor, our own brother, a fellow human being?
