Shyam Learns to Swim
In the Konkan, during the monsoon, the wells fill right up to the brim — so full that one can draw water with one's bare hand. There is great fun to be had swimming in the Konkan during the rains. It is at just this time that new boys are taught to swim. A gourd-float or a small board is tied round the beginner's waist, and he is given a push into the well. There are always swimmers already in the well. Even where the water is six men deep, there are expert swimmers who go down to the bottom and bring up gravel. There are those who turn all sorts of somersaults in the water. Some play fugadi in the well, some lie on their backs with their feet touching each other's and make boats of themselves, raising their heads up — all sorts of games. My uncle was an expert swimmer. Father too could swim. But I could not swim at all.

When others were swimming, I would go and watch the fun. But I myself never once went into the water. I was terribly afraid of it. Even the little children in our neighborhood would leap in with a great splash. But I was a timid little coward! If anyone said, 'Push Shyam in!' I would make myself scarce from the spot.

My mother often used to say, 'Shyam! Learn to swim. Those little children swim, and what are you so afraid of? Do you think so many people would let you drown? Tomorrow is Sunday. Go swimming tomorrow. That Balu, Varvadekar's boy, will teach you. Or else go along with your brother-in-law. Every other minute we need the well for something — do you think we have Pune or Mumbai taps here? One ought to know how to swim. Even Kusatai's daughters, Veni and Ambi, learned to swim. You can't even fill your own bangles! But you're more timid than the girls who fill their bangles. Go swimming tomorrow. That Babu has some gourd-floats put by. Tie one round your waist if you like. Or they'll tie a dhoti round you and hold you up from above. Go tomorrow, all right.'

I said nothing at all. Sunday dawned. I decided to go and hide somewhere. I was quite certain that today Mother would not rest until she had sent me off swimming. I went and hid up in the loft. At first Mother did not notice. It got to be about eight o'clock. The neighborhood boys, Vasu, Bhaskar, Banya, Bapu, arrived.
'Shyam's mother! Shyam is coming swimming today, isn't he? Look, we've brought the gourd-floats,' Banya said.
'Yes, he's coming; but where is he? I thought he was over at your place. Shyam! Hey, Shyam! Has he gone off somewhere?' Mother began searching for me. I was up above, listening to it all.
The boys said, 'He hasn't come to our place at all. Could he be hiding somewhere? Shall we look upstairs, Shyam's mother?'
Mother said, 'Yes, look up there and see. He has this habit of hiding like a rat or a mongoose. That other day he was hiding just like this under the loft-shelf. But go up carefully — mind, that plank up there lifts up suddenly. Step lightly.'
The boys began coming up into the loft. I felt certain now that I was going to be caught, and I began trying to make myself smaller and smaller. But just as a frog cannot puff itself up into a bull, a bull cannot squeeze itself down into a tiny frog either. It occurred to me that in the Bhaktivijay, Dnyaneshwar had once turned himself into a tiny fly and come back after drinking water from a pond — if only I too could become small like that! I sat hidden like a cat behind the rice-bins.
'He's not here. Why would he hide himself in such a cramped spot?' said one boy.
'Come on, let's go; we'll be late otherwise,' said another.
Just then Bhaskar said, 'Look, there he is, behind that rice-bin! That's Shyam!' Everyone looked.
'Shyam! Come on now, why are you hiding like this?' everyone said.
'So he's up there, is he? I just knew he'd be hiding up there. Bring him down. Don't leave without him!' Mother said. The boys came close and began pulling at me. But after all, they were other people's children — they were not going to use much force. They were pulling gently, and I was resisting with all my strength.
'Shyam's mother! He won't come, and he won't budge,' the boys said.
Mother grew angry and said, 'Let's see how he doesn't come. Where's the rascal — I'm coming up myself, wait.' Mother came up, took hold of my hand angrily, and pulled. She began dragging me along by force. Still I kept resisting stubbornly. With one hand Mother pulled, and with the other she began beating me with a switch. Mother said to the boys.
'You take hold of my hands and pull; I'll drive him from behind and thrash him well. Let's see how he won't come!'
The boys began pulling me along, and Mother began landing switch after switch on me. 'Don't beat me, Mother! Mother, Mother, I'm dying!' I began howling.
'You're not dying at all! Get up, get up and start walking. I won't let you off today. Duck him in the water good and proper a few times. Let plenty of water go up his nose and into his mouth. Get up. Still not getting up? Have you no shame, hiding like a good-for-nothing? Look, the girls have come to watch you make a fool of yourself!' Saying this, Mother went on beating me hard.
'I'm going, I'm going! Don't beat me!' I said.
'Get moving, then. If you run off again, just see — I won't let you in the house!' Mother said.
'Shyam! I jump in too, you know. The other day Govindkaka took me up on his shoulder and jumped in. It was such fun,' Venu said.
'Let go of his hand. He'll come along on his own. Shyam! Listen, there's nothing to be afraid of. Once you've jumped in once, your courage will steady itself on its own. Then even if we tell you not to, you'll jump in of your own accord. Don't cry,' Banya said.
At the Devdhar family's well, Varvadekar's Balu and some other young men were already there. 'Well, has Shyam come today? Come along. I'll tie the gourd-floats on properly, don't worry,' said Balu Varvadekar, and he tied the floats round my waist. Down in the well there were already a few good swimmers. I was trembling all over. 'Now then, jump in properly,' Balu said.
I would peer over, then draw back again, step forward, then step back again. I would pinch my nose shut, then let go again. This went on and on.
'What a coward! Venu, you jump in, and then Shyam will jump too,' Venu's brother said. Venu gathered up the front of her skirt and jumped in. Just at that moment, someone suddenly pushed me straight in from behind.
I screamed, 'I'm dying — Mother, oh, I'm dying!'
I came up out of the water, terrified. I began clinging to the necks of the people in the water. They would not let me cling to them.
'Lie flat, like this. Put your belly to the water and stretch out. Move your arms.' I began getting my first lessons in swimming.
Balu too jumped in and took hold of me. Putting his hand under my belly, he began teaching me.
'Don't be afraid. If you get frightened you'll run out of breath quickly. Don't grab at the edge all at once, and don't hold the edge unless you've come right up close to it,' Balu was giving me object lessons.
'Now jump in again. Climb up first,' Banya said.
I climbed up the steps, pinched my nose. I kept going forward and back; but at last I did take the plunge!
'Well done, Shyam! You've as good as learned to swim now — once the fear is gone, everything comes,' Balu said. He held me in the water and taught me a little more. 'Now jump in one more time. That'll do for today,' all the boys said.
I climbed up and jumped in. This time, without Balu holding me, I swam a little on my own. Because I had the floats tied round my waist, there was no fear of drowning. My courage steadied itself. My fear of the water was gone. We all set off for home. The boys came along to see me safely home.
Banya said, 'Shyam's mother! In the end Shyam jumped in all on his own. Not a bit afraid — and with the floats on, he's even started swimming a little.' Balukaka said, 'Shyam will learn to swim well very soon.'
'The fear never leaves until one has fallen into the water, until water has gone up the nose and into the mouth. Shyam, dry your head well. Wipe that tuft of hair,' Mother said. The boys went off, and I dried my head. I put on a dry loincloth. I sat sulking a little on the veranda. The meal and everything else was finished. Mother sat down to eat. I was out on the veranda. Just then Mother called out to me, sweetly, 'Shyam!' I went to Mother and said, 'What?' Mother said, 'Take that pot of curds. There's curds inside — lick it clean. You like it, don't you?'
'I don't want it, go away — this morning you beat and beat me, and now you're giving me curds,' I said, close to tears. 'Look, there are still welts on my body. Even after all that time in the well-water, they haven't gone. Those welts are still there. Don't give me curds while those welts are still there. How can I forget them so soon?'
Mother's eyes had filled with tears. She got up just as she was. She could not swallow her food. She got up, washed her hands, and came back. Mother rose without finishing her meal. Seeing this, I felt bad. It occurred to me — had my words hurt Mother? Mother brought the oil-cup and began rubbing oil into my welts. I said nothing. Mother, close to tears, said, 'Shyam! Should the world be allowed to call you a coward? No one should ever call my Shyam names. I beat you so that no one should ever call Shyam names. Shyam! If someone said to your mother, 'Your children are cowards' — would you like that? Could you bear it? Could you endure an insult to your mother? If anyone insults my children, I will not endure it, and if anyone insults me, my children must not endure it — only then am I truly their mother, and they are truly my sons. Don't be angry with me. Be brave now. Eat that curds and go and play. Don't sleep today, mind you. If you sleep right after swimming, you catch a cold at once.'
Friends! My mother wanted brave children. She did not want cowards.
