Thirty-second Night: Debt Is Hell in Living Life
That day the moneylender's man had come to our house to collect on the debt. Whenever that emissary came to our house, Mother felt worse than dead. There is no happiness where there is debt. Debt is hell while still alive. Even if it means dying, one should not take on debt. Better to go hungry than to be in debt. Debt gives happiness only once — at the moment of borrowing. After that it makes one weep continually; it reduces one to beggary. Debt destroys self-respect, strips away honor. Debt always bows the head. Debt means dependency, means abjectness.

The moneylender's man! Father was attending to his comfort. He had told the household to prepare a good vegetable dish. Banana leaves had been fetched and set aside. "Make kadhi, and put curry leaves in the kadhi so there'll be a nice aroma," Father instructed Mother, and then went off to the fields. That man sat on the veranda. Mother made him tea. The tea powder in the house had run out, yet Mother went and borrowed some from the neighbors. After the tea, Mother gave him hot water for his bath. That clerk bathed, but he did not even wash his own dhoti himself. The moneylender's servant! Even a rich man's dog commands respect. Even the poor must sometimes kiss a rich man's dog. Once, a rich man's dog came at a farmer to bite him. The farmer struck the dog with a stick. The rich man filed a case against the farmer, and the farmer was fined twenty-five rupees — I read of this once! A farmer! Is a farmer even considered a human being? He is the slave who toils for the whole world! He is, as it were, the beast that feeds all the idle and comfortable. And yet he strikes a rich man's dog? Friends! In Hindustan, animals and birds are held in greater regard than human beings. Dogs and crows may enter a temple; parrots and mynahs may live in a house — but a Harijan may not! Where such degraded men exist, who love beasts and birds yet despise their fellow man, how can happiness, good fortune, and freedom ever come?

That moneylender's man's filthy dhoti had to be washed by my mother. By the hands of my virtuous mother that unclean garment was washed. Perhaps it was God's own purpose that, by my mother's hand touching that dhoti, the man who wore it should himself be purified! God's purposes are beyond fathoming. There is no telling from what quarter He will get His work of purification done.

My father came back from the fields. "Have you had your bath and so on?" he asked the clerk. The man said yes. "I was waiting for you. I need to talk with you, settle the account, take the money, and go and stay the night at Visapur this evening. I mean to lodge there tonight," he said. "Very well, let me bathe; I'll finish my worship quickly. You rest a little," Father told him and went off to bathe. Having bathed, he came back and sat down for worship. He quietly asked Mother, "Did you give him tea and everything? You should have borrowed it from somewhere if needed." Mother said, "I gave him everything. I've even washed his dhoti and hung it to dry. Let this wretch be gone from here soon."

Mother was worn out, seething with anger. Father went on calmly with his worship. Though he was calm, the distress within him kept peeping through. Having finished worshipping the household deity, Father went to the temple. Mother laid out the seating and water. Younger Purushottam had come back from school. He fetched the plates. Father soon returned from the temple.

"Get up, Vamanrao, wash your hands and feet," Father told him.

"Come, sit here. It's all right even if you're not ritually pure. No harm at all," Father said to him. The very man who used to call us to observe ritual purity now went and sat right beside that ritually impure man. It was as if the moneylender's man were God himself. Fawning upon him, singing his praises — that alone was Father's task now. What could he do? This utter servility, this crushing of one's dignity, this loss of one's very substance — what had caused it? A single debt. And why had the debt come about? From spending recklessly on weddings and thread ceremonies; from living according to former grandeur; from this false pride of lineage; from not cutting one's coat according to one's cloth; from quarrels, from disputes among kin, from lawsuits; from not rushing at once to clear debt; from not letting go of one's attachment to land even while debt sat heavy on one's chest! Friends! If you do not want your wives' and children's honor dragged into the open, if you do not want your good name paraded through the streets, then do not touch debt. And if you already have debt, sell your fields, your grain, your jewelry — sell everything, but free yourself of debt first.

The leaf-plates were served. Vamanrao and my father sat down to eat. "Purushottam! Recite a fine shloka. Recite one Vamanrao will praise," Father said. Purushottam recited a shloka; but Vamanrao's heart was not generous enough to praise him. Living under the moneylender, he too had grown loveless, ungenerous; he was growing arrogant and pompous.
"Don't hesitate, Vamanrao; have some more vegetable, serve him another ladleful," Father urged Mother, pressing Vamanrao to eat more. Vamanrao did not say much in particular. Perhaps he did not even care for that plain cooking! There was no richness in the food. At last the meal ended. Vamanrao and Father sat on the veranda. Vamanrao was offered betel-nut and cloves. He wanted fresh water to drink, so Purushottam went to the well with a rope tied to a pot to fetch water. He brought back cool water. Vamanrao drank. Mother sat down to eat inside the house.

"Well then, Bhaurao! Bring out the interest money. You had promised today as the date. You must give at least seventy-five rupees today. Don't let this trip go to waste. You told me to come today, so I came," Vamanrao began. "Look here, Vamanrao! Ten maunds of paddy we had, we sold all of it. That brought in some money. We had a little nachni too, we sold that. Scraping together from here and there, we've kept twenty-five rupees tied up ready, just for you. Take at least this much today. Persuade the master. Put in a good word for us. Tell him the money won't be lost. We'll clear it all off bit by bit, settle it in full. Just let the children grow up a little — let them start earning — one of them has gone up to the Previous class this year. Look here, Vamanrao, do worms in dung stay in the dung forever? Even they crawl out eventually." My father was pleading humbly.
"I won't hear any of that. I won't budge from here without the money. You've built this new house — you have money for that. You have money to educate your children in the English school; only for paying the moneylender's dues do you have no money. Look here! If the moneylender's collections don't come in, where will our own wages come from? We too are ashamed to stand before the master. Give me the money." Vamanrao spoke angrily, without the least regard for shame. But what could he do either? He too was but a slave!
"Vamanrao! What can I tell you? What house is this, after all? A thatched hut, that's all. Walls of measured mud! It was at her insistence that this little hut was built, this cattle-shed raised. But even to build this small house, her own bangles had to be sold!" Father said, ashamed.
Father was talking outside. Inside, tears from Mother's eyes were dripping into her rice. Grief would not fit inside her; the rice would not go down.
"You sold your bangles to build the house — sell your wife to pay the moneylender's dues," Vamanrao said shamelessly.
Mother rose like a bolt of lightning. She washed her hands in the sink and came outside. From her eyes sparks of grief and rage seemed to fly. She was trembling. Standing in the doorway of the veranda, Mother said with fury, "Get off this veranda! Have you no shame at all, telling us to sell my wife? Have you no bone in your tongue? Do you have a wife of your own or not? Get out of here, and tell your moneylender to auction off house and home if he likes. But don't let such talk be spoken. Go ahead. Beat the drum, bring the attachment order. But don't utter such foul words in front of the children."
"Very well. That is exactly what we are waiting for. If your house and home are not seized this very month, then my name isn't Vamanrao! Should a mere woman insult us like this, Bhaurao?" Vamanrao asked Father.
"Go inside. Will you go or not?" my father said angrily. Mother went silently inside and sat weeping. What support did she have but her tears? Outside on the veranda, Father was trying to placate Vamanrao. After much back and forth, the clerk took the twenty-five rupees and left.
Father came into the house. "You women haven't a shred of sense. You don't understand anything at all. From morning I was handling him so carefully! I was trying to win him over. Sitting by the hearth blowing on the fire — that's all you know how to do. You'll bring tomorrow's death upon us today. Does anger ever get anything done? One must win people over with sweetness. What do you know of how hard-pressed I am?" Father went on scolding Mother.
"What's so bad about dying today rather than suffering insult at every step? What joy is there in living, treated like a dog, driven off? Better to die today than tomorrow — that would be gold. Let the seizure come, let the auction happen, we too will labor for wages, we'll go and live over at Mathuri's place. Even a hired laborer wouldn't put up with such vile, filthy talk. Come, let's labor for wages, sleep on the bare earth, drink from a stream, tear leaves off a tree and eat them. Come." Mother had lost herself in emotion.
"Talking is easy, doing is hard. Come noon, you'll understand everything!" So saying, Father went outside.
My younger brothers went up to Mother and said, "Mother! Don't cry. When you cry, it makes us want to cry too. Mother, we'll do whatever work you tell us to. Don't cry, Mother!"
Small children were consoling their grown mother! Flowers were giving support to the tree! It was a pitiful sight indeed.
