Forty-Second Night: Aai's Memorial Shraddha
"Friends! Today I must tell the last memory. This memorial offering of remembrance I shall conclude today. In the sky of my heart there are countless stars of memory. I have shown you the brightest among them. Today there remains one last bright star to show you.

My mother was loved by men and women, of course, but she was loved by animals and birds as well. How much love there was between Aai and Morya the cow, and Morya's love for Aai — I have told you that already. Now I must tell you about the cat. I have mentioned this cat before. Her name was Mathi. Mathi was very dear to Aai. She would eat beside Aai's plate. Rice given by anyone else, she would not eat. Whenever Aai sat down to eat, Mathi would come to eat too.

Mathi would always stay close around Aai. Even when Aai went to relieve herself, or went to the well, Mathi would go along with her. She would dance about Aai's feet, brushing her tail against them. That cat had a very deep affection for Aai. She was utterly, boundlessly attached to my mother.

As Aai's illness worsened, Mathi too gradually stopped eating and drinking properly. She could no longer get the rice mixed by Aai's own hand. Even when others gave her rice with milk, curds, and ghee, she would eat two or three grains and walk away. When Aai herself gave her only plain rice, it was as good to her as an abundance of milk and ghee. But in the milk and ghee of others, she found no relish at all.

On the day Aai died, she kept crying meow-meow without ceasing — as if someone had carried off her very treasure of love, as if someone had carried off the true river of milk and ghee that was hers. From that day, Mathi never touched food or water again. In the room where Aai had died, we used to set out milk and water for ten days, for the departed soul — that is the custom. But Mathi never touched that milk. She stayed sitting in that very room where Aai had died. She stopped even crying meow-meow to call anyone. She took, as it were, a vow of fasting and a vow of silence. On the third day, in that very place where Aai had breathed her last, Mathi — that cat — breathed her last too! My mother's cat followed close behind my mother. To go on living in this world without my mother's love seemed to her like poison. That cat's love for our mother was greater than our own love for her. We were made to feel ashamed of our own love. I said within myself, "Aai! With what face can I say that I love you? My love would not measure up even to a fraction of this cat's love!"

"Friends! Such was my mother. In the marketplace of this world, a mother such as her comes to one only through the greatest good fortune. It was my mother alone who gave me everything. Whatever is good in me, whatever is pure in me, all of it is hers. My mother is gone; but she went having prepared me for the service of Mother India. A certain Japanese mother once plunged a dagger into her own heart, and left a note for her son: "Because of me, you do not go to war. You are caught in attachment to me. I am removing the obstacle of attachment from your path." Something like this must have appeared to my mother's own divine sight! This Shyam, she must have thought, will become entangled in attachment to me. He will sit worshipping only me, only this body of three and a half cubits, and think of nothing else. He will not go forth to serve his other brothers and sisters. In the war for freedom, he will not fall through attachment to his mother — for this, my mother must have set herself aside, out of the way. So that all the mothers of India might become my Shyam's own, so that not one mother but many mothers might be given to Shyam — for this, my mother must have departed. She went, leaving me with the divine sight to see these countless mothers. Now, wherever I turn, I find my own mothers. Uttam's mother is my own mother; Dattu's mother is my own mother; Govind's mother is my own mother; Vasantrao's mother is my own mother; Krishna's mother is my own mother; Subhana's mother is my own mother. All of them mine — yes, mine. That mother who gave me this divine sight so that I might see all this, and who, so that this divine sight might come to me, drew aside even the gossamer veil of her own body — how far can I sing the greatness of that mother? These lips are unequal to the task. May that love, that gratitude, that sense of duty, that endurance, that sweetness, be manifest in my every act. One day, serving this vast and boundless Mother, according to my own small strength, according to my own nature, even as I do this service, even as our Mathi-cat turned to gold, may I too, at the last, turn to gold. My mother turned to gold; may her Shyam, too, turn to gold."
