Fortieth Night: The Final Farewell
"Water that lime tree, or it will wither. Water that new jackfruit sapling too." Aai was talking in her delirium. In that delirious state, she could see the trees she had planted with her own hands. Sick and weak as she was, she still saw herself feeding those trees, watering them, checking whether insects were eating their leaves. So many trees in the yard had been planted by Aai's own hand! When I was in Dapoli I had taken some sandalwood saplings there. All the others died; only the one Aai had planted lived. Was it because it was planted with love that it lived?

It was the hour before dawn. Aai was talking in her delirium. There was no coherence to her words. One moment she would say, "Water the trees"; the next moment she would say, "Look, they're crying the announcement — let me put my fingers in my ears." Purushottam alone was asleep. All the rest of us were gathered around Aai. Everyone's face had fallen, gone pale and drawn. It was as though Death itself had come and taken a seat in that house!
"Look there, Shyam is sitting on that peg. Come down, you rascal. Hasn't that childhood stubbornness left you yet — come, meet me. If not with your mother, then with whom is a child to be stubborn — but enough now. Come, meet me!" Aai's delirious talk went on.
"Akka! Akka!" Mavshi called out to Aai, trying to bring her back to her senses.
"Namu! I never returned your oil. Don't be angry with me. Shyam! Come, put your cool hands on my forehead!" Hearing Aai's words, everyone's eyes filled with tears. No one could speak. All stood silent.
"Your lap is my very honor; they cry the announcement. Tell them — give it, I say — don't I have your feet, don't I have the kumkum on my brow, who is there to carry off my honor? What moneylender could carry off my honor? My honor — is it in ornaments, in house and home, in field and farm? In his feet, in his lap, in his love lies my honor! Give me — give me his lap!" So saying, Aai began to rise. No one could restrain her. Everyone laid her back down.
Father sat down and took Aai's head upon his lap. "Water, water!" Aai said. Mavshi put water in Aai's mouth.
"Akka!" Mavshi called. Aai looked at her with a steady gaze and waved her hand to say, it's nothing, it's nothing. For a little while Aai lay quiet. "Has he taken my head on his lap?" Aai asked.
"Yes, yes. Look, here I am, right beside you. Don't talk." Father said.
A while passed. "Why have you come to see me? Has Chandri come too? Come, all of you. But why did you leave your studies to come? I am always with you, and you are always with me. If you've come, then come close — don't sulk like this, Shyam! Are you sulking because I made you grind at the mill? I won't make you grind anymore now. That's over now. Come, Shyam! What do you mean, no! Look there, I can see him standing right in front of me — that's Shyam — just because you couldn't recognize him, does that mean a mother cannot recognize her own son?"
The night passed thus, in delirium. Day broke. Mavshi said to Purushottam, "Go and fetch the hemgarbha remedy from Radhatai and keep it ready." The hemgarbha remedy is given at the very last moment — it keeps a faint flicker of life going for a couple of minutes more. Mavshi did not like the signs she saw in Aai at all. In a single night, how deep Aai's eyes had sunk.
That day was Sankashti Chaturthi. Father kept the fast on that day. But ever since he had grown weak, he would eat a grain-preparation at midday — he ate sooji. Aai said to him, "It's Chaturthi today, isn't it? Go, bathe. Eat a little sooji. Don't torment yourself like this. Go, eat something." She spoke haltingly, with great effort. Father rose, bathed, and went to the temple. On his way back he brought Ganpati's tirtha and gave it to Aai.
Aai drew young Purushottam close. She passed her hand over his face. In an utterly faint voice she said, "Son, be good. Don't be stubborn. You have Dada, you have Anna, you have Mavshi. Behave well and properly!" Purushottam began to cry. Aai kept passing her hand over his back.
"Sakhu! Has everyone eaten?" Aai asked.
"Yes, Akka." Mavshi said.
"Sakhu! They are all yours now. Let the mother die, let the aunt live on. Purushottam, Shyam, all of them are yours. Chandri, Gaju, all of them are yours." Aai was taking her final leave.
"Yes, Akka." Mavshi said. "Shyam is poor, but good-natured. Chandri, Gaju — God watches over them all!" Aai spoke brokenly. After a long interval she would utter one word at a time.
Everyone sat around Aai. Looking at Durva's grandmother, Aai said, "Forgive me — forget whatever I've said, whatever I've done!" The old woman melted with tears. After a long while, Aai would utter another word.
"Sakhu! Tell Nana, forgive me. I am his own daughter after all. Tell Byo too, forgive me." Then quiet again. At times Aai's eyes rolled about; at times she closed them.
"Shyam!" A single word.
"Akka! I am sending for him today." Mavshi said. Mavshi said to Bhau, "Call the priest and let the go-pradan be performed."
It is customary to give a cow in charity when one is dying. If there is no cow, some money is given in its place, under the name go-pradan. The go-pradan was performed through Aai's own hands.
Aai could no longer speak; her voice was gone. She only looked. She passed her hand over Purushottam's body. Now and then she raised a finger, as if to say, I am going to God. After a long while, gathering what little strength remained to her, she said to Bhau, "Take care of yourself, don't torment yourself. I am content, on this lap—" She could say no more.
Everyone was silent. Aai's breath began rising upward. Kashaappa, the village physician, arrived. He checked her pulse. "Half a ghatika," he said sorrowfully, and left. The neighbor Janakivayani and Radhatai had come. Namumavshi sat there. Indu was there.
There was the hush of a cremation ground in that room. That Aai would go now, no one doubted.
"She never got to see Shyam and Chandri; only Gaju managed to see her." Father said.
"She must be thinking of them, mustn't she?" Janakivayani asked.
Aai's lips seemed to move. Was there something she wished to say? Something she wished to tell? But she could not speak it. Were those lips saying Ram, or were they saying Shyam? Radhatai ground the hemgarbha remedy. She touched it to the tongue that was sinking down and away. "Take care, all of you!" Aai said.
"Is there something you want to say?" Radhatai asked loudly into her ear. Aai made a sign with her hand — no!
Death had entered the house the day before. It was waiting now for the final moment. Once more Aai gathered her strength and said — "Look after everyone. God is there!"
The last moments began to appear. Her tongue began to be drawn inward. The time had come. The time had come to go to God's house; the blessed hour had come. Radhatai brought Ganges water and put two drops in her mouth; a tulsi leaf was placed on her tongue. Aai was laid upon a blanket on the ground. To go to God, one must go free of all attachment.
"A little time passed. "Ram" was heard. Aai had said Ram! Having flung everyone into a fathomless ocean, Aai was gone. The summons had come; she went. That summons no one can refuse. Shyam's mother had departed. Bhau's store of merit was gone; the sheltering canopy of grace over Purushottam was gone. The goddess who had inspired the lives of Shyam and Gajanan, the goddess made of love, was gone! Chandri's maternal home was gone! Nana's and Ajji's beloved one was gone! The servants' Byo was gone; freed from the tangle of this world, Aai had gone — gone to find the warmth of love in the embrace of the Greater One!
