Shrikhand Vadya
Our Aai was very good at making shrikhand vadya. Her syrup never failed her. The vadya would come out beautifully crisp and light. Neighbors on all sides would often call on Aai to come and make vadya for them, and Aai would go gladly. To be of use to someone else — that was her greatest joy.
Parvatibai's daughter Venu had come home to her mother's house. Parvatibai and Aai were friends. Venu often came to our house, and Aai would get her to sing songs. One day Aai had scolded me, and at that very time Venu had wiped my eyes for me. Venu felt to me almost like an elder sister.
That day Parvatibai said to Aai, "Shyamchi Aai! Venu is to leave for her sasar day after tomorrow. I'm thinking of sending shrikhand vadya along with her. Will you come tomorrow afternoon? How beautifully you make them! They have to be sent to her husband's house, so it would be good if they turn out well."
My Aai said, "I'll come, of course. Is Venu really going so soon? I thought she'd stay till Sankranti. She was company for me too. She'd come over, sing songs for me."
Parvatibai said, "A letter has come from her sasar, asking that she be sent. Once a girl goes to her sasar, she isn't quite our own any more, is she! She came for a few days, and that was plenty. That Krishni's people haven't sent her home even though two years have passed. Her mother wept over it the other day. Isn't Venu's lot better, then? So you'll come tomorrow. I'll send Venu to call you. I'm off now."
Aai applied her kunku, and Parvatibai left. The next day, after the midday meal was over, Aai was not feeling well. Somehow she got through the dishes and the clearing up, and then lay down. I asked Aai, "Aai, are you lying down?"
"Shyam! My body aches. Will you press it a little?" Aai said. I began pressing Aai's limbs. Her body had grown hot. Her forehead was aching badly.
Then I went out to play. Meanwhile Venu came to call Aai. Aai was lying down. "Will you come, Shyamchi Aai? Aai is waiting for you," Venu said in her sweet voice.
Aai got up. She said to her, "I just lay down for a bit and dozed off. I hadn't forgotten. I was about to come anyway. Let's go."
Aai went to Venu's house and began making the vadya. All sorts of talk went on between them. When I came home from playing, Aai wasn't there. I went looking for her, and finally went over to Venutai's house. Seeing me in the yard, she said, "What is it, Shyam! Come to see your Aai, have you? Come, your Aai is making vadya for me. I'm off to my sasar tomorrow, Shyam."
I said, "Going away? Then who will wipe my eyes? If Aai scolds me, who will take my side?" I felt sad that Venu was leaving. "Come, Shyam! Let's grind the saffron. You bring those cardamom pods and take out the seeds." I began helping Venu with her work. Venu ground the saffron, and I pounded the cardamom on the grinding stone.
"Shyam! What have you come for?" Aai asked me. Catching the tone in Aai's voice, I said, "I haven't come for the vadya at all. Venutai! Am I greedy, then? That day you gave me something to eat — did I ask for it?"
Venu said, "Shyam, you're a good boy. Shyamchi Aai! Don't you go scolding Shyam."
Aai said, "Venu, dear! Do you think I have no love for him? I scold him now and then, but only for his own good. So that the world won't have anything to say against Shyam, that's why his Aai speaks sharply to him sometimes. He's good already, but I want him to become still better. Parvatibai, the syrup is ready — look, it's set into a ball."
The vadya were spread out onto a plate. Aai was spreading it swiftly with a banana leaf. After five minutes Aai cut the vadya into pieces and said, "Parvatibai, take them out after a little while — I'll go now."
Venu said, "Stay a little longer. Finish it all off with your own hands." Aai could not say no. After a while Aai lifted the vadya out with a flat spatula. How lovely they had turned out! Parvatikaku filled them into a tin. Venu set one vadi before the family god and gave one to me. Venu's mother said, "Shyam, scrape this plate clean and eat it. Here." I sprang forward like a warrior and scraped the plate and ate it clean. Parvatibai placed four vadya in Aai's hand, and Aai, having put on her kunku, went home.
I stayed on at Venu's. "Shyam! It looks like a button has come off your shirt. Take it off and give it to me, I'll mend it properly," Venu said. I took off my shirt and gave it to Venutai. She took out her phanere. The little pouch, like a purse, in which women keep needle and thread and such things, is called a phanere in the Konkan. Venutai sewed on the button, and where it had torn in another place, she mended that too. I put the shirt back on. Venutai said, "Shyam! Come, let's pick gulbakshi flowers and take them to your Aai."
We picked the flowers and brought them to our house. Venu came along with me. "Shyamchi Aai!" Venu called out. But where was Aai? Was she at the well, or in the cowshed? She was lying down. We went straight to her.
Venu said, "Are you lying down? Don't you feel well? Did sitting by the hearth tire you out?" Venu laid a hand on Aai's forehead and drew it back with a start. "Shyamchi Aai! You've got quite a fever!" she said, dismayed.
I said, "Venutai! Aai hasn't been well since the afternoon. She was lying down at midday and I was pressing her limbs."
Venu asked, "When I came to call you, were you already unwell then? Was that why you were lying down? How was I to know? You didn't even say a word. Shyamchi Aai, with fever in your body, why did you come and sit by the hearth?"
Aai said, "Venu! There wasn't much fever then, dear. My body just felt a little feverish, that's all. Shyam! Go, child, light the lamp — it's dusk already."
I lit the lamp and showed it to the family god and the tulsi, and came and sat beside Aai. Venu was troubled. She said, choked with feeling, "Shyamchi Aai! You came to make vadya with fever in your body, and that's why this fever has grown worse. If the vadya hadn't turned out, so be it — Aai would have managed something anyway. Is vadya worth more than your life?"
My Aai said to Venu with affection, "Now, what does such a small fever amount to? Venu, we women don't think twice about such things. Even with the body burning with fever, even with the head aching, we still take up the laundry bundle and wash it and bring it home. We cook for ten people. Don't take it so much to heart. A little sweating will bring the fever down, and I'll be fine. Go home now, your Aai will be waiting for you."
Venu sat on beside Aai. She would not leave. I said to Venu, "Venutai! Will you string those flowers into a garland? Aai has a fever — you make it."
Venutai made the garland. Venu said to Aai, "Shyamchi Aai! All this trouble for my sake — this fever."
Aai said, "Venu, what foolish talk is this? Are you a stranger to me? You're just the same to me as my own Chandra. If the vadya hadn't come out well, your sasar people would have found fault, and how bad would you have felt then? Hearing your maher people spoken ill of, your eyes would have filled with tears. So that Venu's in-laws should never have cause to speak ill of her own people, that's why I came. Parvatibai and I are friends, the two of us. If I bore a little pain for her daughter's sake, what of it? Just as Shyam doesn't feel like a stranger to you, you don't feel like a stranger to me either. Why should I mind the trouble? What contentment I feel! If I hadn't come to make the vadya, my mind would have kept nagging at me. Go home now. I'll come in the morning. The fever will break in the night with sweating. I'll be well by morning."
Venu drew me close and said, "Shyam! Come along to our house. Aai has roasted some chavali beans — I'll give you a good potful to take home. Then all your Aai needs to do is cook plain rice, and that will do. Or else I'll go and set the rice cooking myself."
My Aai said, "Venu, dear, Shyam can put the rice on — you just send over something to go with it, that's enough." But Venu wouldn't listen. She lit the fire, took the rice, washed the pot, and as soon as the water came to a boil, she put the rice on and then set off. I went along with her. I brought back the cooked chavali beans and at once ran and threw my arms around Aai. My eyes had filled with tears. Aai said, "Shyam! What's the matter?"
I said, "Venu said, 'Shyam! Your Aai is a truly great woman. You must listen to her. You're very fortunate to have got such an Aai.' Saying that, she ran her hand over my back, and all at once I began to cry, and I still can't hold it back."
"Go, child! If the rice is done, take it off the fire, or it will catch at the bottom," Aai said softly, and I went and took the rice off. The next day Venutai left for her sasar. All of us felt sad. I still remember that shrikhand vadya to this day. Venu's mother and my Aai have both passed away. Venu too did not live long; but that love still remains. That love is immortal. People die, but their goodness goes on shining forever.
