"Our debt kept growing day by day. This was because we could not even pay the interest on time. We had some fields. If Father had sold one or two of the larger fields at the very outset, most of the debt could have been cleared, and besides, enough farmland would have remained for our own food; but selling land did not sit well with him. To sell land felt to him like a sin, felt like a disgrace.

That night Mother's father — our grandfather — had come to our house. We used to call him Nana. He had come to say a few things to my father; he had come thinking he might try to reason with Father, if it could be done. Grandfather was a very shrewd, capable man. He was worldly-wise, careful with accounts, and prudent; but he was greatly proud of his own intelligence. If anyone spoke against what he said, he could not bear it. He was also somewhat quick-tempered by nature. A man of sharp intellect tends to feel that others have no sense at all, that he alone was born with all the wit there is. Nana's temperament was somewhat of this kind.

My father was sitting on the veranda on a sack he had spread out. Dinner was over. Mother was eating inside. Grandfather came outside and began talking with Father.
Nana began, saying, "Look here, Bhau, I have come today to tell you this for the last time. I suggested this to you many times before; but you did not take it to heart. Now, though, it has come right up to your throat — now you must wake up. Sell off your farmland. At least first pay off that Marwari's debt. We'll look for another moneylender afterward. Others will be a little more patient, and their rate of interest isn't so high either. The debt owed to the Marwari at Kapat is the main thing. Day by day the debt is piling up, the dues are mounting — this will bring total ruin. Listen to my advice."
"But why should you worry so much about me? Everyone comes to give advice to a poor man. Does a poor man understand nothing at all? Nana! It is my worry, this debt of mine. There's no need for your heart to bleed over it!" Father said sarcastically.
"Bhau! I could not restrain myself, and that is why I came. I came because it pains my very insides. My heart is bound up here, that's why I came. My own flesh-and-blood daughter has been given to you, and that is why, at this very hour of night, through the mud, I have come. For my precious grandsons, so that they may keep some land, some home, and remain in this village; so that they need not be exiled from this village of their ancestors, need not be scattered homeless — that is why I have come. The seizure will come soon. In an auction, goods go for a pittance. That Payare field of yours — the man from Visapur is taking it for fifteen hundred rupees — give it up. Tomorrow you won't get that price. The Marwari can be paid off." Nana said this pouring out his heart.
"Nana! How can I sell the Payare field? In this Payare field we grew up from childhood to manhood. We built up that field, made it what it is. We broke great boulders with our bare chests. We blasted the rock and turned it into paddy land. A field that yielded ten maunds we turned into one yielding three khandis. We dug a well there. And you say, sell Payare! How the children love that field! On Saturdays and Sundays, as small boys, they used to stay right there on the field. There they would eat brinjal bharit and rice with their grandmother among the durva grass. How many mangoes we planted there, how many flowering plants! What a bond of affection with that field! And what soil it is! Land where gold itself could grow, that is what it is. Day by day the land is vanishing from my sight. If one cannot add to one's ancestors' fields and lands, should one not at least preserve what remains? I will not let even a single scrap of that land be sold. Can one cut off a piece of one's own heart? To sell, with one's own hands, one's own land? Just as it is a sin to sell one's own mother, just as it is a sin to sell the cow in one's own shed, so too is it a sin to sell land! Land is one's mother. It is on her grain that we have been nourished!" Father said.
"Bhau! One cannot get by in this world on grand talk alone. Flesh does not grow on the body by eating talk of kadhi, talk of rice. Land, you say, is a mother — then how is it to be sold at all? Can one buy another's land? Can one snatch it away? At that moment it doesn't seem that the land is someone else's mother! Don't put on airs of morality with me. There was a time when you yourself brought seizure orders against others' fields, held auctions, and dragged away these 'mothers.' Land is sold, land is bought. One must look at practicalities. Later, by God's grace, when the children have grown, when livelihood is properly settled, they can buy land again. If not this land, then another. But how are you to keep and guard your land with debt sitting on your head? They will beat the drum of seizure, the police will come, auctions will be held, the house will be padlocked, and there will be a fine spectacle for all to see! So isn't it better that one should not let such a situation arise in the first place — that one should guard one's honor, keep one's shame covered?" Nana asked.
"I will look after my own honor. My honor is not yours, is it?" Bhau said.
"It is mine too — that is exactly why I came. Have you forgotten that you are my son-in-law? People will say, so-and-so's son-in-law's house was seized. In your honor lies my honor too. My daughter's honor is my own honor. Think a little. It is not good to stubbornly hold to one's own obstinacy like a fool!" Nana said.
"Call me a fool, call me whatever you like. You and the whole world today have the chance and the right to say whatever you please to me. Call me a fool, call me an ignoramus!" Bhau said.
"I certainly will. As if I could hold back from saying it! Great sardar's family, indeed! We too, they say, are sardars! I gave my daughter because it was a sardar's family! I gave a dowry! I gave her so that she might have a proper household! I did not give my daughter so that her honor should be paraded through the streets! Is this what being a sardar means? Not a single broken bead on your wife's body, nothing decent to wear, nothing to eat — is this what a sardar is? At the door, the moneylender's men sit demanding payment, and you speak however you please to your wife — is this, this, what being a sardar means? Not even a proper house! Nothing at all! Is this your sardar-ship? We, sardars, indeed! What airs you used to put on! Thirty years you've run this household — what wealth did you build up? You haven't earned a farthing's worth of sense! Everyone has cheated you and driven you off. Open your eyes a little, sardar! The marks of a beggar, and you call yourself sardar! Well, fine — you have no sense of your own, but at least you could have listened when someone else told you. Not even that. What foolishness is this you've been carrying on with? What is one to call this asininity? Bhau! Enough of this foolishness now. Do as I tell you!" As Nana was saying all this, Mother came out from inside the house.
Mother could not bear to hear that talk from inside the house; yet she was listening with great difficulty. But now her patience broke. She came outside and said to Nana, "Nana! You are sitting in my house; you gave your daughter to another once — now don't say whatever you please! Everyone throws stones, but that doesn't mean you should throw them too. Nana, it is your own daughter's lack of merit that has brought this decline, these bad days, upon this once-full household. Before your daughter entered this house, things here were going splendidly. Why do you bring up their sardar-ship? Say instead that your own daughter's fortune is poor. Till today I have eaten my food in comfort, spent my days with honor — that was by their good fortune. I am the unlucky one, your daughter is the unlucky one. If he cannot bring himself to sell the land, then so be it. Whatever is to happen will happen. But do not wound his heart. What is to happen will happen anyway; but wounded hearts remain wounded. Nana, a broken pearl cannot be restrung; once hearts turn bad they cannot be joined again. Do not wound his heart. Do not speak such crooked words in front of me. How can you insult your own daughter's husband in her very presence? Whatever he may be, he is my husband; whatever is to become of us, let it become. Does he not do everything for the best, after all? Does he wish ill for his children's future? God knows everything. It is He who gives understanding. Nana, do not come to this hut again just to hurl abuse. Come to give your blessing and good wishes to your daughter and her husband. Come to speak two sweet words. Give your blessing and your love, nothing more is needed. No advice, no abuse. Nana, forgive me for speaking so. A sardar's family. Nana, was it not a sardar's family! The whole village used to give it respect. Did you yourself not see it? All days are not the same. This year all the mangoes may have fallen, but next year the blossoms will come again; a tree may wither, but it will put out fresh leaves again. Nana, don't be angry. I touch your feet. Let whatever is to become of us become so. But from now on, never again taunt him with such words. That is all I ask." So saying, Mother actually went to touch Nana's feet.
"Girl! Get up. If that is your wish, then look, I am going. From today I will never set foot in your doorway again. Understand? What does it matter to an old man like me!"
"Nana! Don't twist my meaning like this; don't fly into a rage. Do keep coming. Just as I am your daughter, so he is my husband. I must look out for both of you. I need you as much as I need him. Nana! Fortune has abandoned us; our kinsmen have abandoned us; will you abandon us too? Nana, do keep coming, come to see us lovingly. Come to see your girl. Will you come?" Mother's throat choked.
"No, I will not come now. Why should one go where one's own word carries no weight?" So saying, Nana left.
"Nana, it seems the word on your lips is dearer to you than your own daughter. He's gone. What is to be done? Let it be. You lie down now. Shall I rub some oil on your forehead? You'll feel calmer." Mother said to Father.
"Why oil on the forehead of this ill-fated wretch? You go on inside. Let me lie here alone." Father said in exasperation.
Poor, hapless Mother! She got up and went off. Younger Purushottam was asleep. She went and drew the covering over him. Where did she go? Where, indeed? She went and sat in the courtyard by the tulsi plant, weeping before the tulsi-goddess. Round about, the huge mango trees stood in grave silence. The wind was still. The sky was still. My mother sat there weeping. That debt was making her weep. Day and night, that debt made my mother weep.
