Yashwant, the Blessed Soul
"That day was a Saturday, an Ekadashi," Shyam began, starting his story.

"Wait a moment. Barku is still to come. Yesterday he came without even eating his bread," Shiva said.
"There, he's come already. Come, Barku, come; sit by me," Govinda said, and made Barku sit beside him.

Shyam began to tell his story:
"Those were the days of the monsoon — the Konkan monsoon, at that. Rain poured down in torrents. Everywhere streams of water rushed and gurgled. With straw irlas on our heads, shivering, we went off to school through the rain. In those days umbrellas had not yet become so common in the Konkan. Irlas are very lovely, simple things. Our younger brother was a little unwell, and so he did not come to school with us that day. Dada and I went off to school.

We went to school; but at home Yashwant's illness suddenly grew worse. For two days he had been unwell with dysentery; but that illness had already been cured. Now a different illness set in. Towards dawn his stomach began to ache — that was how it started. The pain in his belly grew worse and worse. His stomach began to swell. He could neither pass stool nor urinate. What doctor was there in a village, what enema! Only home remedies were being tried. Our servant Govinda came to call us from school. Yashwant kept remembering us — 'Anna, Dada' — calling for us.

We came home from school to find such a crowd! Some of the village vaidyas had come. Pitambarbhai and Kushaappa had come. My brother lay writhing on the ground. Even as his stomach kept swelling, he was terribly thirsty. They would not give him water. He kept trying to crawl towards the water-pot; they kept holding him back.

He must have been about six years old at the time. Only the day before, our mother had scolded him. Some split gram had been put out to dry in the courtyard. A goat had come and started eating the gram, and Yashwant had shooed it away. The goat had thrust its face in and scattered the gram about. He was gathering it up, setting it back in order, piling it up. Just then our grandmother saw him and said, 'Are you eating the gram, you little thief, and tidying it up neatly so no one will know? You're a fine one, aren't you!'
"No, Aji, I wasn't eating it; you're just blaming me for nothing!" Yashwant said, nearly in tears.
At home our mother was, at that time, laid up with joint pain. She could not walk. She had grown very weak. She lay in her room. Yashwant went in to his mother, and she too scolded him. 'Were you eating the gram? How many times have I told you not to touch things?'
"Aai! I swear on God, I didn't eat the gram — why is everyone scolding me?" Yashwant said, and he went outside and sat crying under the black mango tree.
That was the incident from the day before; but now Yashwant lay at death's door. Truth is tested in the court of death. Had Yashwant gone off to demand a verdict from God? Had that matter wounded his heart so deeply?
It seemed that Yashwant would not live. Around nine o'clock the pain grew even worse. 'Aai! Keep me with you!' he said in a feeble voice.
"You are with me, my child!" our mother said.
Weak and ill as she was, our mother took the dying Yashwant's head onto her lap. Tears had risen in her eyes.
"Aai, put my head down. Your lap will hurt. Your joints are aching," Yashwant said in a deep, faint voice.
Our mother's heart overflowed. 'No, my child, my joints aren't aching, nothing is wrong with me. A mother's own pain cannot stand before her child's pain. Strength that isn't even in a mother's body comes to her when her child needs healing. My lap isn't aching. It must be the bones of my lap that are hurting you instead,' our mother said.
Looking at our mother with one last loving gaze, taking her hand in his, Yashwant said, 'Aai! Just sit there beside me, that's all I need. As long as you are near, that is enough.'
Every single word of Yashwant's was boring a hole into our mother's heart, and into all our hearts. Our mother remembered what had happened the day before. Her eyes filled, her chest tightened. All at once she kissed that dying child. She showered tears upon that fading, lotus-like face. 'There, look' — Yashwant opened his loving eyes and looked at our mother with the deepest devotion and love.
A little while after that, our Yashwant, saying 'Ram, Ram,' left us and was gone!
Our mother always used to say, 'Yashwant was a blessed soul, and that is why he went to God on the day of Ekadashi.' As children we used to look up at the sky and point out some star to one another, saying, that must be Yashwant's star. Our father used to tell us that blessed souls become stars in the sky. We believed it too.
Today Yashwant is no more, and neither is our mother; but the true love that passed between the two of them in that hour of death, that is immortal. I was given so noble a brother, and so noble a mother. This thought fills me with gratitude. I am not fit to touch even their fingernails; I am a lowly worm; but if there is any goodness, any love at all in me, the credit for it belongs to that brother so devoted to his mother, and to that noble mother who guarded her children's character so closely. To be given such a mother and such brothers requires the merit of past good deeds. One must carry, stored up within, 'the wealth of many virtuous acts.' Just as merit is needed to find good company, so merit is needed to be given noble parents, noble brothers and sisters; but I do not believe I possessed such merit myself. It was a gift of God's own grace.'
