Thirty-sixth Night: There Is Oil, But No Salt!
"Today's slivers aren't good — the thread keeps breaking. They don't look properly carded. Govinda! You carded the cotton today, didn't you?" Bhika asked.
"Today's slivers are Shyam's. He did the carding today." Govinda said.
Just then Ram came in and heard this talk. "Shyam's mind has been troubled lately. That troubled mind of his does not let his hands work well. For the hands to do good work, the mind too must be at peace." Ram said.

— this is a line of Tukaram's.
"Where has Shyam gone, Govinda?" Ram asked.
"He was upstairs a while ago." Bhika said.
"He was going to see that Ailabai — they say she's quite ill." Govinda said.
"What sort of name is that? Ailabai — what kind of name is that?" Bhika asked. "Why, Ailabai means Ahilyabai. It's a corruption of Ahilya. One has to dig out the meaning hidden in a name." Ram said.
They were talking like this when Shyam arrived.
"What are you up to, Govinda?" Shyam asked.
"Nothing much. How is that Ailabai?" he asked.
"They've sent her off to her village." Shyam said.
"Will she get better? Her children are so young." Bhika said.
"Who knows? What can we do about it anyway?" Shyam said.
"Bhika! You haven't scrubbed the vessels well today. Your mind wasn't on it." Shyam said, noticing the vessels.
"The way your mind wasn't on it while carding cotton." Bhika said.
"Why? Weren't today's slivers good?" Shyam asked.
"There's a lot of trash left in them." Govinda said.
"My thread wasn't breaking, though." Shyam said.
"You must have used the first batch of slivers." Bhika said.
"No, indeed; I carded cotton today myself, and I kept the slivers made from it in my own little bundle."
"I switched them. I had good slivers with me, so I put those in your bundle and spun thread from yours instead. You sit up spinning at night, and it would have been hard on you, so I switched them." Govinda said.
"Shyam, it isn't good for you to stay awake at night." Ram said.
"Sleep won't come, so what am I to do? Rather than just lie there, I sit and spin thread." Shyam said.
"Why won't sleep come to you? We sleep well enough." Ram said.
"You all work hard. To get good sleep one must labor through the day — the body has to be worn down." Shyam said.
"And you don't work, is that it? This morning it was you who went to sweep near the well." Ram said.
"But did Bhika, Govinda, and Namdev let me sweep for long? You all think I shouldn't work. You should earn merit, but shouldn't I?" Shyam asked.
"You weren't feeling well, that's why they didn't let you work." Ram said.
"People are starting to arrive. We must ring the bell." Govinda said.
The bell was rung and the prayer began. After the prayer, Shyam began to relate his memories of his mother.
In our house now every single thing was a struggle. There was want of everything in the house. There was oil, but no salt; there was salt, but no chili — that was how things went. Sometimes there wasn't even a dry cow-dung cake to light the stove, no dung-fuel to put in the fire-pit. Mother would wander about the backyard gathering twigs. Sometimes she would bring dried mango leaves and cook over those. Sometimes there was not even oil for tempering the vegetables. Her tears were the tempering, and it seemed that was what gave the food its flavor. What could the poor woman do! She was living out her days on her dignity alone. Mother's own parents were no longer at Palgad; they had gone to Poona and Bombay to live with their son. There was no one left in her maternal village. Her parental home stood locked. Mother never went out of the house — partly because she had no strength, and partly because she felt too ashamed. She spent her days sitting at home.

At that time a certain pensioner gentleman had come to settle in our village. He was not originally from our village, but our village had good air and water, a large Brahmin settlement, and besides, he had great faith and devotion toward the Ganapati of our village — so he had come to live there. He had bought land right next to our house and built a neat little bungalow.
Mother came to know this new household. The pensioner's wife was a very kind woman, gentle-natured. Mother would go and sit with her, and she too would sometimes come to Mother's. One day Mother said to her, "Radhatai! If you have any work, I'll do it for you. I'll grind your flour for you and so on — it will be some help to me." Radhatai, having lived in the city, was used to paying cash and having her flour ground for her. She agreed to give her grinding work to Mother. What strength did Mother have left? But what else could she do? When Father rose at dawn and went out, Mother would set the hand-mill turning. Purushottam would lend a hand until it was time for school; after that she ground alone, stopping and starting, until the grinding was done. "If Shyam were here, he'd grind it all in no time," she would think to herself. And remembering how I had left the house in anger, she would begin to weep. As she ground, her eyes would fill, her throat would tighten, her chest would swell with feeling, her hands would tire. From the few coins she earned by that laborious grinding, Mother would buy oil and salt and carry on the household's meager comfort.
The days of Diwali were drawing near. A little extra oil, and so on, would be needed in the house — at least two little lamps had to be lit, after all! There was a time when in our house a whole potful of oil was used every day during Diwali for the lamps; hundreds of lamps used to be lit then. But for Mother now these were only memories. How was Diwali to be celebrated? Mother said to the pensioner's wife, "Would it not do if I washed your laundry too? Do give me other work to do."
The pensioner's daughter had come to her mother's house. Her name was Indu. She had just risen from childbirth and had fallen ill; she had grown very weak, and had come to her mother's for a change of air. Radhatai said, "Would you rub oil on our Indu's body, and would you bathe and anoint her baby?"
Mother said, "Yes. I'll do it gladly. I love this kind of work. Long ago, many years back, my Chandri came home, came to her mother's house, and I myself used to rub oil on her."
Every day at dawn Mother began going to rub oil on Indu's body. She fixed her grinding for the third quarter of the day. Mother worked with her whole heart. While massaging Indu's body, it seemed to Mother that this was her own daughter. Bathing that small baby too gave her joy. Laying the child across her legs, pouring oil on its soft, tender crown, she would say with love and tenderness, "Tho, tho, tho! Baby's little wife, yo yo yo!" From the time Mother began bathing and anointing him, the baby began to fill out; he began to look fresh and glowing. A change began to show in Indu's health too — some color began to return, little by little, to her pale face.
Radhatai's faith in Mother grew firm. As soon as the month was up, she placed two rupees in Mother's hand. "Why two? One is enough!" Mother said.
"Take it, Yashodabai, it's Diwali time. You work with your whole heart — how can that be priced? Work done wholeheartedly cannot be given a fixed rate."
Mother came home and gave thanks to God. "O God! All my honor is Yours to keep!" she said. Out of the two rupees she had a little oil and a little ghee brought, and a coconut. She made a few karanjis and four anarsas. During the four days of Diwali she lit two little lamps outside. On Bhaubeej day Purushottam went to Indu's house; Indu waved the lamp of blessing over him, and Purushottam offered her four annas in return. In place of firecrackers, Mother made him a little bamboo popgun and cast him some clay pellets shaped like tridents. Purushottam would load a pellet into the popgun and fire it off; when the pellets ran out, he would load parigna leaves instead and make it pop. He never insisted on having proper firecrackers of his own.
But how much longer could my mother — already worn thin, already ground down by this boundless toil — go on living? Fever would come upon her, and she grew short of breath as well. Yet as long as she could keep the cart rolling, she kept pushing it. The wedding of the Tulsi plant came round. Purushottam had brought amla and tamarind from Ghorivade; marigolds were brought, and the Tulsi wedding was performed. Offering turmeric and kunku to the Tulsi plant, Mother said, "O Tulsi Devi! As long as I have my honor, take me away with my eyes closed by your grace, with my honor and my married blessing both intact."
