'Take me too, Bhau, to hear the story. You go every single day. Mother, tell Bhau to take me along.' Vachhi was pestering her brother.

'You'll only start dozing off there. Why should you come along?' Bhau said.
'Take her along too; let her listen too. Whatever is good, everyone should hear. I would have come myself, but there's all this housework — it's night before I can get through it.' Bhau's mother said.
'Bhimi next door goes, Hanshi goes too, and Harani's brother takes her along as well. Aren't you my brother too?' Vachhi, looking utterly pitiful, was melting her brother's heart.
'Come along, then — but mind, if you start saying I'm sleepy, let's go home, once we're there, just see!' — warning her thus, her brother took Vachhi to the ashram as well.
Boys and girls began coming to hear these story-sermons at the ashram. Grown-ups too, whoever had the time, would come.
By the time Vachhi and her brother arrived, the story had already begun.

'In the end, my father's own brothers drove him out of the house. Bhaubandaki — quarrels among brothers! There is a great deal of this in our Bharatvarsha. It has existed since the days of the Kauravas and Pandavas. It exists still. Where there is no love between brothers, how can freedom dwell there, how can liberation remain? The house in which my father had grown up from childhood, the house in which for thirty years he had, for better or worse, run the household for everyone, the house in which he had given curds and milk to all the others while he himself ate only tamarind broth, the house from which, while still living in it, he had arranged the marriages of his brothers and sisters and fulfilled their wishes — from that very house he was told to leave! In that house even Mother had had to bear humiliating words. We were small children then. Mother would sometimes tell the story of that separation, her eyes filling with tears.
'I still remember that day. There was a Ganapati festival in our village on Maghi Chaturthi. This was a votive festival. The public Ganapati festival used to be held only in Bhadrapada. The Dharap family of Mahad had made this vow. At that time Abhyankar, the well-known nationalist kirtankar, had come to our village, and his kirtans were being held during the festival. Everyone in the village had gone to the temple to hear the katha. That night we were not allowed to go to the katha. We had gone to sleep. Around nine or ten at night, Mother woke us up. My parents were leaving the house at that hour. Tears were trickling from Mother's eyes. The house in which she had milked the Mori cow, in which she had fed the farmhands their fill, the house in which she had once walked about decked in gold — that house, that Gokul, she was now leaving. Out of shame before the daylight, she was leaving by night. My younger brother was on her hip — the brother born after Yashwant. Father walked ahead; behind him Mother and I followed in silence! Where were we going? We were going to Mother's parental home. Mother's family lived in the very same village. At that time there was no one at the maternal grandparents' house. Grandfather and Grandmother had gone to Pune to their son's house. They were to return after some days. That night, stealing along in secret, we came to Grandfather's house. In the temple, joy was in full swing; but we were going off into the wilderness as though in mourning. Upon this vast earth of God's, many different scenes are being enacted at one and the same time.

'We grew used to the new house now; but the gloom had not left Mother's face. After some days Grandmother returned. Although my grandmother was warm-hearted by nature, she was somewhat headstrong too. My mother, as far as possible, tried to accommodate herself to Grandmother, for she was well aware of her own circumstances.

'The thought of living at her parental home gnawed at Mother's mind. She felt it as a humiliation. To live at her parents' home along with her husband — she felt death itself would be better than that. Her nature was very proud. One day Grandmother and Grandfather had gone to the temple to hear a purana recitation. Father was sitting on the veranda writing up accounts. Mother went out onto the veranda and said, 'I cannot go on living here any longer. If you want me to live, then build us a house of our own. Eating and living here feels like death to me.'
Father said, 'But we eat our own rice, don't we? We only live here. Is building a house some kind of joke? It's easy for you women to say such things — what do you know of the difficulties men face?'
Mother, suddenly furious, said, 'You men have no self-respect at all.'
My father said quietly, but with sorrow, 'We have no self-respect! It's as though we are not even men! The whole world insults a poor man — why should his wife not do the same? Go on, you insult me too. Say whatever you please!'
Hearing Father's words, Mother began to weep. 'I never meant to insult you. You go and take offense at everything for no reason; but I truly do not wish to stay on here.'
'Do I want to stay on here either? But you know our circumstances, don't you? We are in debt, and I cannot even pay the interest on it. What are we to build a house with? And are we to build something no better than a cattle-shed? To live in such a place would itself be a humiliation.' Father said, trying to reason with Mother.
'Even a cattle-shed will do, so long as it is our own, independent. Build a perfectly plain hut of grass. I shall feel no humiliation in living there; but I do not want to go on living with my parents' family. If my brothers' wives come tomorrow, they too may insult us at some point or other. Better to leave here before that happens. A leaf-hut is better than living in a grand tiled house belonging to others. Building such a hut will not cost much. Take these bangles from my wrist — if they do not suffice, sell my nose-ring too. If I have no nose-ring, no bangles, it makes no difference. To whom do I have to go looking presentable? Our own independence is our true adornment. A kumkum mark on my forehead and a mangalsutra round my neck are more than enough for me. What use are this nose-ring and these bangles if they cost me my independence?' Saying this, my mother truly set her nose-ring and her bangles down before Father.

Father was struck dumb. 'I never knew you felt so much pain over this. I shall build a small house very soon,' Father assured her.
My mother used to say: throw away your jewelry to win your independence; the ornament of independence, the adornment of freedom — this alone is the ornament that becomes and is precious to everyone.
On the small plot of land that had fallen to our share, the building of the hut began. The walls were of mud, of unbaked bricks. In the Konkan these are called mape — larger in size than ordinary bricks. Walls of these mape were raised. The house was thatched with grass. The floor of the house was prepared. It was decided that we would move into the new house on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. Mother felt both sad and glad. Her brothers-in-law nearby had big houses, bungalows, while ours was to be this little grass-thatched house — this thought would come to her mind; but then she would say again, 'Whatever else it may be, this is our own, independent house. Here I am the mistress. No one here will ever tell me to get up and go.'
The house-warming rite for this hut-like house was performed. First the deities were carried into the house. Then the household goods were brought in. Mother had made coconut ghatle. The occasion had to be celebrated properly. The whole day passed in the bustle of it. Father kept telling people, 'This is only a temporary structure. Later we shall build a bigger one.'
But Mother would say to us, 'When and from where will he ever manage to build a big house now? I shall get my big house only once I have gone to God; but this little hut is my heaven. For here I am independent. Here there is no dependence upon others. The plain bread eaten here will taste like nectar; but I want none of the basundi-puri eaten at another's house.'
That night we sat in the yard. The stars were twinkling in the sky. The moon had already set. Mother felt a deep sense of fulfillment. The house was small; but in front of it and behind it lay a large yard. This yard was, as it were, the true house. Mother said, 'Shyam! Do you like the new house?'
I said, 'Yes, our house is lovely. The houses of poor people are just like this. Our Mathuri's house is just the same. She will love our house very much.'
Did my words hurt Mother — that our house should be like the house of Mathuri, who came to pound our rice? No, Mother did not feel hurt. She said, 'Yes, Mathuri is poor; but she is rich in spirit. Let us too, living in this small house, grow great in spirit. Let us grow rich in spirit.'
'Yes, we shall grow rich in spirit. We truly shall,' I said.
Just then a star fell from the sky. Mother suddenly turned grave. My little brother said, 'Mother! What a huge star that was!'
Mother remained grave. She said, 'Shyam, is it telling us that the star of your mother's life will soon fall too? Is that great, vast, beautiful sky above not calling me up to it? Did that star not come to summon me?'
'No, Mother! It came to see this independent house of ours. It must have loved our simple house, this house of our own, more than heaven itself. Is it not said in the Harivijay that when the cowherd boys washed their hands in the waters of the Yamuna, the gods of heaven would come down to eat the grains of rice that fell into the water? In the same way, the stars too come to see this house — because there is love in our house, because you are here.' I said.
Passing a hand full of tenderness over my back, Mother said, 'Shyam! Who taught you to talk like this? How sweetly and beautifully you speak! Truly, even the stars will love this simple, lovely house of ours — everyone will love it!'
