Akka's Wedding
Supper at the ashram was over. After the evening meal, until the time of prayer, the ashram folk would generally go out for a walk. In the village where the ashram was, there was a river. The river's name was Bahula! By the riverbank stood a small temple of Mahadev. Near the temple was a great old peepal tree. A stone platform had been built around it. The village people too would sometimes come and sit near that platform.

Govinda and Shyam had gone out for a walk. They had gone and sat upon a hillock. Little Govinda used to play the flute sweetly. He had brought along his bamboo flute and was playing it. Shyam, with his poet's heart, was listening. Suddenly Govinda stopped and looked at Shyam. Shyam's eyes were closed. Upon his face was a sweet and gentle radiance.

"Shall we go back to the ashram? It will soon be time for prayer."

Shyam opened his eyes. He said, 'Govinda! The flute is a divine thing. Krishna's flute could melt beasts and birds, even stones and rocks. It's there in the women's songs, isn't it, that description:'

"Govinda! In my childhood, during the holidays in the monsoon in the Konkan, I used to go into the wilds with the cowherd boys. The cattle would graze and the cowherds would play their reed pipes. My uncle used to make lovely reed pipes. A little bamboo tube — but what power there was in it! Nowadays people buy those harsh, foreign brass pipes and the like. They cost two rupees. But for the poor folk of the villages, this flute is their instrument — sweet, easy to make, and beautiful! The flute is our national instrument. Shri Krishna made it current, and it is still played in seven hundred thousand villages! Play it, sing out that song.'

'But look, there's the bell ringing! Let's go to prayer,' Govinda said.

'Yes, let's go. Tell me, Govinda! Did I go on talking too long yesterday? But I still had a bit of my mother's earlier story left to tell. Today I'll finish quickly,' Shyam said.

'Yesterday you spoke for only ten or twelve minutes. Don't cut yourself short for no reason. All sorts of different thoughts and ideas come up in between, and we benefit from them. Why should that time be wasted?' Govinda said.

'Steadied in contemplation! What is a man of steady wisdom like.'
and so on, the prayer began, the verses from the Gitai describing the marks of the man of steady wisdom. This prayer has now become, as it were, a national prayer.

As soon as the prayer ended, everyone grew eager for Shyam's story. Shyam began his tale.
'Of all us brothers and sisters, my mother's love was a little greater for our sister. My sister was, as it were, my mother's very image. We call her Akka. My Akka is the very image of mercy and forgiveness, of hardship and endurance. At first she suffered ill-treatment at her in-laws' house; but she never once said so at her maternal home. She never so much as slapped her own child. If ever she grew angry with her children, she would get up and go off somewhere else, calm her anger, and then come back.

This is a story from the time of my Akka's wedding. For the longest time no marriage could be arranged for Akka at all! She had a Mangal affliction in her horoscope. That created difficulties. And besides, there was the difficulty of the dowry. Our family's name carried weight. It was a case of a grand house with a hollow frame. Some in the family still wanted to live in the old style of grandeur, and the debts kept mounting. My Akka was paraded before seventeen different families; wherever the girl was liked, the dowry stood in the way. A dowry is nothing but a millstone round a girl's neck! Because of this torment over dowries, girls' bodies do not even grow properly. An inward anxiety keeps gnawing at them. Words like, 'The girl is growing up, we must get this over with soon, who knows what sort of husband our girl will get!' reach the girls' own ears. Life becomes distasteful to them. The young men of our country are simply worthless!
Twenty years ago, so that this custom of dowry might be abolished, Snehalata burned herself to death in Bengal. At that time the young men made a brief stir. They held meetings, passed resolutions; but soon everything went cold again! Dowries are still wanted, the expense of education is wanted, a ring is wanted, a bicycle is wanted, a watch is wanted. Taking money for a daughter, or taking money for a son, both are equally shameful. My great religion tells us not even to sell a cow; but what greater irreligion is there than followers of that very religion selling their own sons and daughters? Everyone struts about proclaiming religion with their mouths; but in their conduct, it is all a mockery of religion. Even the young men, who ought to have generous hearts, are as good as dead! Until there is the courage to rise in revolt against such shameful practices, nothing will change. How can I say that those who cannot cast off the customs and practices that choke the life out of their own sisters hold freedom dear? How can the world say so? But let it be. I have wandered off somewhere on this flood of feeling.'

"Even when you wander off somewhere, all we get is honey! Even if you go astray into the wild woods, you still show us only flowers; when you go on talking, our very souls sway to it, the way a cobra sways to the sound of the pipe," Namdev said.

"Whatever you say, it tastes sweet to us. Wasn't it you who told us that story of the famous actor Ganpatrao of the Shahunagarvasi theatre company? They had announced a performance of the play Hamlet, but Ganpatrao would come out on stage and start speaking lines from the play Tukaram instead! The audience would say, let it go on as it is. Whatever Ganpatrao does is fine. It's the same with you. Whether you tell us a story or give us a sermon, it's all a joy to us," Govinda said.

"So what happened about Akka's wedding, then?" Ram asked.
Shyam said, 'Ram always sticks to the point. All right, listen then. After a great deal of going about, a marriage was finally settled. The wedding was to take place in Ratnagiri. All of us had to travel from Palgad to Ratnagiri. I must have been six or seven years old at the time. I don't remember much of it myself; but my mother used to tell that story. I still remember that rough sea, those bullock-carts, all of it. About fifty or seventy-five people from the village and the household set out. There were servants and other people with us too. The bullock-carts arrived at Harne port. In those days the condition of the boats was very poor. There was no jetty at Harne. The boats stood out in the sea, in water more than waist-deep. One had to climb onto the boatman's shoulders and be carried out to sit in those boats. Then the boats would go alongside the larger vessel!

Harne port was rather troublesome; but the scenery there is very beautiful. Harne's old name was Suvarnadurg. Songs about Harne's fort are current among the women there.

This verse tells how the English drove out King Chandrasen. On the seashore at Harne there are dense groves of coconut palms. Watching the swelling sea before them, those palm trees seem to sway their heads like necks in a dance. The solemn roar of the sea can be heard for six miles round. Harne has a lighthouse. On a high hillock stands a red, revolving light. Without a word, it warns the ships that there are rocks here. Saints too stand in just this way, upon the heights of a lofty life, silently guiding the world. Saints are the very lighthouses of the ocean of worldly existence.

A line of such an abhanga was recited by one of the villagers gathered there. The village Warkaris and such folk have so many abhangas and ovis on the tips of their tongues. We, the educated, do not know half as much by heart as they do. The educated know English poets; their words are on our lips; but we do not even remember Dnyanoba and Tukaram.
Shyam said, 'How beautiful that red light looks at night! At night, when the moon is in the sky, and the sea rises with the tide of love, then hundreds of moons seem to dance upon the sea's breast. It feels as if the sea is taking hundreds of photographs of its own lovely, fair child!'

'Yes, the story goes that he emerged along with the fourteen jewels at the churning of the ocean,' Namdev answered before anyone else could.

Shyam was carried away in his description. 'One even begins to imagine that the sea has brought out ornaments to adorn its own child. Or that the moon himself, taking on hundreds of forms, has come down to play with the waves below. It is all such a wonderful sight. The winds blow, the coconut palms sway, the waves surge, the light gleams, the moon shows off its splendour, and the boat fills up with passengers. The boatman and the sailors keep up their shouting. Someone's luggage gets left behind, someone's gets mixed up, someone's gets lost! Someone gets seasick from the rocking of the boat, someone throws up, and it lands on someone else, who then flares up in anger. All of India's disorder, all its confusion, all its indifference, all its lack of fellow-feeling can be seen right there.
We got into the boat; the boat set off. The oarsmen began to row. The water went chubuk-chubuk. Because of the wind, spray from the waves flew over us. 'Well done, pull harder,' the oarsmen kept calling out. There was crowding and jostling in the boat. My mother sat there holding her infant. One of my aunts was also sitting there. My aunt too had a nursing infant with her. Because my aunt was unwell, she had no milk in her breast. She fed the child on cow's milk instead; but cow's milk does not satisfy a nursing infant the way a mother's own milk does. A mother's milk has a taste all its own. It is not mere milk. It carries love and tenderness within it. That is why that milk gives the child health, gives it a healthy glow. Whenever there is love in the giving, both the giver and the receiver find the highest joy in it.
The sound of the bells round the necks of the bullocks in the carts on the shore could be heard faintly from a distance. The lights of the harbour looked dim. The ship was beginning to appear in the distance. Its topmost light had come into view. Even so, it would still take half an hour before the ship reached the harbour and the boat could draw alongside it.
'Why are you biting like that? What is there to bite at in that!' my aunt scolded her child. The child cried all the more. Nothing would quiet him. There was a crowd in the boat too. There was no room to move about here and there. Whenever there are many people around, if a child starts crying, mothers feel mortified, as if they could die of shame. A mother's supreme joy lies in her child laughing and playing, everyone admiring him, picking him up, dancing him about, kissing him; seeing this makes her feel fulfilled; but if the child starts crying, then comes humiliation! Everyone wants to hold the laughing child, who wants to hold the crying one? In truth it is the crying one who needs to be held all the more; but it is he who is met with everyone's distaste instead. In this world everyone is a companion in joy; no one is there for sorrow. The wretched have no one in this world, the fallen have no one. The one who needs sympathy the most is the very one who finds the least of it.

If a child starts crying it becomes a nuisance. 'What's got into the little brat, crying like that,' 'oh, he's like this every day' — such remarks reach the mother's ears, and she feels she could sink into the earth, child and all! The world's marketplace is full of just such gossiping, mocking people.
That was exactly what happened to my aunt then. The child simply would not settle. My mother was sitting nearby. My mother handed her own baby over to the servant and said to my aunt, 'Vansa, give him to me. I'll take him now.' My mother lovingly took my aunt's child and nursed him at her own breast. The baby drank his fill at my mother's breast; he began to laugh and play.
During that wedding my mother would even let her own child cry a little, but she would soothe her sister-in-law's child first. When children get the sweet milk of a mother, they become like little kings! Whenever my aunt's child began to cry, my mother would take him up and nurse him. My mother never once grumbled about it; rather, she felt it the greatest privilege, the highest joy and contentment.
My mother would sometimes tell this story and say, 'Shyam, whatever you have, you should share with others. You should stop another's tears, make them laugh, make them happy. There is no joy like that joy. Anyone will fuss over and dote on their own child, Shyam; but the truly great person is the one who does the same for another's child, with just as much love.'
