Thirty-first Night: The Tamas-tirtha of Ladghar
Raja had to leave for home today. It grieved him — it grieved him that he would not be there to hear all of Shyam's mother's memories. But duty is stern. For duty's sake one must cast aside every temptation. Even the pull of good things must be set aside. Temptation is not only toward bad things; it can be toward good things as well.
"Shyam! When shall we meet again now? When shall I get to hear your sweet voice again? Shyam! The memories you tell are simple ones; yet through them you reveal a beautiful dharma. In Krishna's small mouth Yashoda saw the whole universe; in the same way, in these small stories of yours one glimpses a vast vision of dharma and culture. Shyam! Yesterday I said to Ram that this is dharma in the form of story, or these are stories in the form of dharma. In the guise of stories you are telling dharma; in the guise of dharma you are telling stories. You are showing how much joy and warmth can be poured even into our ordinary daily life, are you not? On this road of life there is no shortage of happiness and wealth. The love of sisters and brothers, love of cattle, love of birds and beasts — all these can make life rich, beautiful, and abundant. Shyam! How many times, listening to your memories, have I been moved to tears! That night you were describing love — at that moment my heart overflowed. Shyam! When will I get to hear such things again? You are, as it were, the very image of Shyamsundar Krishna, are you not?"
"Raja! You have a habit of exaggerating. You love me, and so everything of mine looks good to you. I have only one quality — earnestness. It is this earnestness that makes everything seem adorned. When I do kirtan, I make up for my lack of musical skill with my eagerness and earnestness. Raja! What else do I have? Nothing. Truly, nothing at all. I am merely a talking husk. It is you who do the actual work. I only tell stories, narrate tales — a man of words; but you are a man of deeds. Raja! In my heart, how many times I lay my head at your feet! Bhika, Namdev, Ram — how much work they do! Even though you have given me such regard, I know full well I have nothing in me. You are smearing vermilion on a stone and bowing to it." Shyam was speaking thus.

Just then Ram came in.
"What is it, Ram? Has the cart arrived?" Shyam asked.
"No. The plan has changed. It's been decided you'll go at night instead of now. Daji said we should hear tonight's memory first, and only then go. Raja, go at night — there will be no delay at all!" Ram said.
"God's will!" Raja said.

Evening had come. In the sky an endless display of colors had opened out. Red, blue, yellow — every color had been poured out there. It was a magnificent sight. Shyam and Raja went down to the riverbank and talked. Talking on, the two of them fell silent. They had taken each other's hands in their own. Then they let go. The cowherds, having grazed the cattle, were returning home. Some rode on the backs of buffaloes, some played their flutes.
"Shyam! Come, let's go back." Raja said.
"Raja! When one beholds such a magnificent vision of nature, one feels like going nowhere, staying right here, and merging into creation itself — dissolving the single drop of one's own life into that great, silent ocean of music that is nature." Shyam was speaking. His lips trembled. Shyam was emotion incarnate; Shyam was fervor incarnate.
At last the two friends came back. People began gathering on the terrace of the ashram. As the stars came out one by one into the terrace of the sky, the whole sky bloomed into flower; as people gathered one by one on the terrace, the whole terrace filled up. The prayer began. The prayer ended. For a moment everyone sat with their eyes closed.
Shyam began to tell the story.
In our childhood, when my mother's joints used to ache, a vow had been made to the goddess of Ladghar. In Dapoli taluka itself there is a large and lovely village by the seashore called Ladghar. At Ladghar there is the Tamas-tirtha. Near Ladghar, at one spot, the seawater appears reddish, coppery — hence it is called Tamas-tirtha. That vow to the goddess had remained unfulfilled for a long time. My mother's joints had healed. Though she had not remained as strong as before, she could move about, walk here and there, and manage two kinds of household tasks. To the goddess of Ladghar one had to offer a wooden doll, a wooden kumkum box, a khan, a coconut, and so on. To fulfil this vow, my mother was to come from Palgad to Dapoli, and from Dapoli I was to take her to Ladghar — so it was decided.
I was waiting for when my mother would come. After so many years, my mother was going to step outside Palgad! For twelve years she had not gone beyond Palgad. Never a change of air, never a change of place. Mother came. I arranged a cart to go from Dapoli to Ladghar. It was decided we would set out from Dapoli at dawn. From Dapoli, Ladghar was three kos away — a three-hour road.
The dawn cock crowed. Mother rose. I too rose. The cart-driver arrived on time and began calling out. I gathered all our belongings. Mother and I went and sat in the cart. At Ladghar we had a distant cousin-sister on my mother's side; we had decided to stay at her house. We expected to arrive by seven or eight in the morning.
The driver drove the cart and the bullocks began to move. The bullocks walked along most cheerfully. It was the calm hour of dawn. The lovely cluster of the Pleiades was visible in the sky. The sound of the bells at the bullocks' necks felt pleasing in that quiet hour. It was as though those sweet bells of nature's own temple were ringing at dawn! Flowers had bloomed. A gentle breeze was blowing. Birds were singing. In the temple of creation, the morning arati had begun.
In the cart there were only the two of us — my mother and I. My mother and I; I and my mother. Just the two of us, only the two of us. We loved each other very much. I was fourteen or fifteen years old; yet to my mother I was still a small child. A mother never feels that her children have grown up. I lay with my head on my mother's lap. The cart was a large one; there was plenty of room. With my head buried in my mother's lap, I lay there. Mother kept running her loving hand over my head, over my hair.

"What a thick tuft of hair you have, Shyam! Seems you never oil it?" Mother asked. But my mind was elsewhere. I was too deep in happiness.

Such was my state. Mother and I had never before travelled together like this. We had never wandered so freely, so unburdened. Mother and I. Yes. That day the world belonged to the two of us alone. Many sweet dreams played in my mind. I would grow up, I would study, I would never let my mother want for anything; I would keep her in a heaven of happiness — such castles I was building in my mind. To build towers of fancy and then to knock them down — that is the restless nature of the mind.

Mother said to me, "Shyam, why don't you say anything? Haven't you had your fill of sleep yet?"
"Mother, I want nothing more than to lie silently on your lap while you look at me with love and run your hand over my body. Mother, pat me to sleep. I always want to become a small child again in your presence. Pat me, sing me the ovis." Hearing my words, Mother truly began to pat me and sing ovis. The birds of the forest had begun to twitter. Between Dapoli and Ladghar there is dense forest on both sides of the road. Along the way, sunlight cannot even penetrate. At one spot, water comes cascading down from the hills onto the road — a sight both magnificent and hushing. Cashew, mango, jackfruit, banyan, payari, and karanj trees line the road on both sides. All manner of birds began to move about in these trees and sing. Creation was trying to wake; but I was trying to fall asleep on my mother's lap. Sleep would not come, yet I lay there with my eyes shut. It was the hour when the world rises; but my mother was lulling me to sleep. As Mother sang ovi after ovi, she sang the following one. Sometimes my mother would even compose her own ovis as she sang. I had experienced this before. This time too, the same thing happened.

The moment Mother sang this ovi, I sat up with a start. I sat up to look at the water rushing down in torrents.

I said, "Mother, you are calling upon God to enter Shyam's life — how then can I sleep? For God to come is for wakefulness to come. God gives everyone wakefulness. Surya Narayan sets the whole world in motion, does he not?"
From far away came the roar of the sea. As the forest ended, the far-off, surging ocean came into view. Right beside the forest of worldly life, the boundless ocean of divine joy is forever surging. Step just a little outside the forest of worldly life, and you will meet that joy there.
From a distance the neat, lovely village of Ladghar came into view. We entered the village. In everyone's garden the bullock-driven water-wheel was turning. The watering of the gardens was going on. The koo-koo sound of the water-wheel could be heard. Boys driving the bullocks from behind, small whips in hand, could be heard calling out. Channels of water flowed through the gardens. Water was going to the areca palms, coconut palms, bananas, and pineapples. Each house had, beside it, its own grove of banana, areca, and coconut. It was a very happy and beautiful village — clean and abundant water in plenty, lovely air, a profusion of fruit and flowers, dense groves.
Our cart moved on through the village. We did not know the exact house. We went along asking the way. Along the way there was a children's school. The little children in the school began staring at our cart. Whenever some new cart, some new bird, some new person — anything unfamiliar — comes into view, children's curiosity awakens.

At last Subhatai's house was found. The driver unyoked the cart. He tied up the bullocks and gave them fodder. We went into the house. I had never seen Subhatai before. Even Mother was seeing her after ever so many days. My mother was older in age than Subhatai. Subhatai looked like my mother's elder daughter, so to speak.
The moment she saw Mother, she was quite astonished. "Vayani! Come in. How many years since we last met!" With such sweet words Subhatai welcomed Mother. "And who is this?" she asked, looking at me.

Mother said, "Subhye! This is Shyam. The one who used to throw tantrums as a child. The one who quarrelled with everyone — don't you remember him?"
"My, how you've grown! Studying in the English school, I suppose?" Subhatai asked.

"Yes, I'm in the fourth standard," I answered.

In that loving, full household we at once felt quite at home. Subhatai said, "Vayani, go and bathe in the sea right away; you'll be back by ten or eleven. After lunch we'll go to the goddess, so that by evening you can have the cart yoked for your return journey. You say you won't stay on, of course. If only you had come and stayed a week, now that you've come this far! I'd have felt so glad too. Living at my in-laws', I'd have had a taste of my mother's house. Will you stay?"
"Subhye, this cart is a hired one, already arranged for the return. Besides, who is there at home anyway? I've left the little ones behind. Shyam's schooling will suffer too. That the two of us have met after so many years — that itself is a great deal. So let's go to the sea right now." Mother said.
We took our clothes. Subhatai's husband set out with us. The cart was yoked. It went off briskly. The sea was near; the road ran right alongside it. We were to go to the Tamas-tirtha. I kept gazing steadily at the sea. With my small eyes I seemed to be drinking it in! A vast ocean, an endless expanse — no beginning, no end — below, the blue sea of water, and above, the blue sea of sky.

Our cart reached the right spot. Subhatai's husband and we too climbed down. He showed us where to bathe. The waves of the sea were surging there. The sand here too seemed somewhat reddish. "Why is the water red just here?" I asked Subhatai's husband.
He said, "A miracle of God — what else?"
Mother said, "God must have slain a demon here, and that is why the water turned red!" Subhatai's husband said, "Yes! There's no harm in guessing so."
Wearing my langoti, I went into the sea. I began playing with the small waves. I did not go very far out — I was not very familiar with the sea. Mother went in to a little more than knee-deep water and sat down to wash herself. The sea, with a hundred hands, came softly tickling, laughing, sporting, chuckling. The sand beneath our feet would slip away each time a wave withdrew. Mother and son, we bathed in that ocean of God's grace. The water was salty, yet as it was a sacred tirtha, Mother drank a little of it and made me drink some too. Mother offered flowers to the sea, offered turmeric and kumkum. She worshipped the sea; she flung four annas into the sea! To the ocean, in whose belly lie heaps of pearls, my mother gave four annas! That was gratitude. To the God who created the sun and moon, the devotee waves a small lamp, a wick of flame. A person seeks to express, in some outward token, the gratitude and devotion within his own heart. Looking upon that boundless ocean, should one not learn a little of the spirit of sacrifice?

Having put on dry clothes, we got into the cart again. By the time the cart reached the house it was nearly noon. We were very hungry. Subhatai had already made ready the leaf-plates and everything else. Her husband performed his bath, evening prayers, and worship of the deities at dawn itself. After finishing everything at dawn, he would set to work in the garden and the grove.
We sat down to eat. The meal was extremely simple but tasty. In whatever little time she had, Subhatai had made khandvi, a simple sweet, for us. Coconut milk had been extracted; there was coconut chutney. Every dish had been given flavor with coconut. There was a vegetable of brinjal with radish pods in it — it had turned out wonderfully. There was home-made, well-matured ghee.
"Shyam, recite a nice shloka." Mother said.
I recited the Sanskrit shloka "Keyura na vibhushayanti purusham." Subhatai's husband liked my shloka very much.
"You go to an English school, yet it seems you're not ashamed to recite shlokas? Children these days can't even recite four shlokas properly. What number do you stand in your class, Shyam?" he asked me.
"Second," I told him.
"Well now! You seem quite clever!" he said.
Subhatai's son was five years old, and her daughter was two and a half. The boy, Madhu, sat beside his father. He too recited a fine shloka to show us.
"Shyam! Have some more khandvi. Don't be shy." Subhatai said.
"Shyam is shy before the whole world to begin with! No need to be shy here, Shyam!" Mother said, laughing. My mother too was seated eating. Subhatai said to her lovingly, "Vayani, eat at your leisure. Let them get up."
Everyone finished eating. Subhatai gave Mother a betel-nut from the fresh green areca. I did not eat betel-nut, but I nibbled the tender kernel inside the fresh nut. Subhatai and Mother between them cleared everything away. The two of them lay down for a little while and talked. I went with Subhatai's son into the grove. I watched the fun in the grove. So many banana bunches had come to fruit. The scattered sheaths of the banana flower-stalks lay about. A chutney is made from these banana-bracts, but when there are so many, who bothers with them! One by one the petals of the banana flower were opening and a comb of bananas emerging from each. There was a guava tree. I climbed it. Parrots were perched on it. A parrot had pecked at one lovely guava. We knocked it down and ate it. Just then Subhatai called out, so I went into the house, and Madhu came running after me.
"Shyam! Pluck two or three pomelos from that pomelo tree and bring them. We'll cut open two here, and take one along — it'll be nice to eat in the cart." Subhatai said.
"Where is the tree?" I asked, and Madhu said, "Come, I'll show you, Mama!" and taking hold of my hand, began pulling me along. On the pomelo tree hung fruits, yellow as coconut sweets, big and heavy. We too had pomelo trees at home when I was small, but they never bore fruit this large. I climbed the tree and knocked down two or three pomelos. We carried the pomelos into the house. I suggested that since we were going into the wilds to the goddess, we should split the pomelos there — it would be fun in the wild. But Subhatai said, "In the wild we'll eat fresh coconut and flattened rice; split the pomelos here." The pomelos were split open. Some pieces were taken out to the driver too. The pomelos were very sweet.
It was time to go to the goddess. I woke the driver. Subhatai, her children, my mother, and I — all of us fit into the cart. It was a large cart. Outside the village, at the foot of a hillock, stood the goddess. Mother performed the worship of the goddess. She offered the wooden doll, the kumkum box, bangles at her feet. The goddess's oti was filled with khan-cloth and coconuts. Everyone applied the sacred ash to their foreheads, and Mother had a packet made up in a scrap of paper for the family at home. Then we ate our forest meal — coconut, flattened rice, jaggery. It felt delightful in the wild. In the wild one always feels a special joy; the mind feels glad and free. At forest meals there are no walls of a house around you. You are within the vast house of vast creation itself. There, narrowness disappears.

Having bowed at the goddess's feet, we came back home. Now we had to return to Dapoli. From Dapoli, Mother was to go back to Palgad that night by bullock cart. We got ready. I paid my respects to Subhatai and her husband.
"You're close by, at Dapoli; come some Sunday. Going all the way home to Palgad is such a long journey — so do come here instead. You heard, didn't you, Shyam!" Subhatai said.
Her husband said, "Shyam! Do come, won't you. We're not strangers at all. Well, how else will acquaintance grow, if not by coming and going? Do come!" I said 'Mm.' We bowed before the deities. A betel-nut was placed before the gods. Subhatai tied up areca nuts, two tender coconuts, and one large ripe coconut for us to take home. She gave us two pomelos as well.
"Subhye, I'll take my leave now!" Mother said. Mother began asking leave to go.
"Vayani! When will we meet again now?" Subhatai said, her heart full.
Mother said, "Subhye! God alone knows when we'll meet. After twelve years I've stepped outside Palgad even for a moment today. Where would I go, in any case? At most I have two brothers, over toward Pune and Mumbai. If I went to them! But they have their own households. How much would they even remember a sister? Subhye, these past five years malarial fever has clung to my back steadily. When the fever comes, I must lie down; when the sweat breaks and the fever goes, I must get up to my work again. Who else is there in the house, after all? A poor person ought not to fall ill — that itself is a sin. There's simply no taste left on my tongue at all. Somehow I push down a mouthful or two with a bit of ginger and a slice of lime. Well, so be it. God's will! What else can we mere mortals do? One must endure whatever fate brings, and let the day that has come pass by. But to whom can one even say this? With whom can one grind out one's sorrow? After all these years you and I have met; it's your loving nature that made me want to speak. You are just like a daughter to me. You and Chandri used to play together. I bathed you; I stitched your petticoats when you were small. You are mine, and so I speak. It lightens the sorrow a little. It feels better. In this world, seeing that another shares in one's grief brings some relief. But I don't speak of it to anyone. Only to God do I tell it, only to Him do I speak." As she said this, tears came to Mother's eyes, and Subhatai too pressed the end of her sari to her eyes.
"Vayani! Do come now for our Madhu's thread ceremony. Vayani, Shyam and the rest will grow up, and then, mind you, they won't let you want for anything. Your children being good — that itself is God's own gift!" Subhatai said.
Mother said, "Yes. That much happiness I do have. When Shyam comes home for the holidays he does all my work for me, and they say he's clever at school too. Whatever God brings will be true. Well then, I'll take my leave!" So saying, Mother placed a rupee each in the hands of Subhatai's children, and gave Subhatai the khan-cloth she had brought.
"Vayani! Why a rupee?" Subhatai said.
"Let it be. When will I ever meet them again now? Subhye, your Vayani is no longer a rich woman, you know. Let that rupee be." So saying, Mother ran her hand over the children's backs and set off.
We got into the cart. Mother and son sat in the cart once more. The cart set off. Since the bullocks were headed home, they moved fast. But now it was an uphill road, whereas coming it had been downhill. The bullocks had no choice but to go slowly. The village fell behind and the cart settled onto the road proper.
Evening was drawing on. The whole sea itself had become a Tamas-tirtha. A very lovely sight. The sun was setting. Eyes could look straight at it. It now looked like a red ball. The sea seemed eager to bathe the weary, spent sun in a thousand ripples. It sank — the sun sank. That red globe dropped into the sea. At that moment green and blue appeared. Having slept the whole night in the sea's embrace, it would return the next day.
Thick, dark groves closed in on both sides. Here and there stars began to appear in the sky. Passing through a forest at night feels deeply solemn. Crickets were chirring. From far off came the roar of the sea. Mother and son began talking in the cart.
"Mother! When will the two of us go somewhere like this again, just the two of us? I've never wandered anywhere with you before. Mother, I wish we could roam about together and drink deep of love," I said, taking Mother's hand in mine.
Mother said, "You grow up first, and then I'll come along on your earnings. Then take me around everywhere — Pandharpur, Nashik, Kashi, Dwarka, all of it. Your grandfather went and came back from Kashi. These others have gone and come back from Nashik and Pandharpur too. But where would I go, and who would take me? My Kashi and my Pandharpur are right there beside the tulsi in the courtyard! There's a saying among us, isn't there — 'Say each day, I shall go to Kashi, and thereby earn the merit of that pilgrimage.' Even the mere wish to go, kept up, earns the merit of having gone. As you pour water over yourself, say 'Har Har Ganga.' Vithoba and Vishveshwar, Godavari and Ganga, are all right there in our own courtyard, our own home. For the poor, this is a convenient arrangement, you see. Child! Where are we to go wandering? The moneylender's agents sit camped at our door as it is. This life makes one weary of it! Enough of this worldly round! What pilgrimages, what nothing! This very pilgrimage of worldly life, my child, is itself the greatest pilgrimage! Just let me close my eyes at the end of this pilgrimage with my hands full and my honor intact — that will be enough."
We had come near the spot where the water came cascading down the hillside. From Mother's eyes too a quiet stream was flowing, trickling down her cheeks. I took those sacred waters of Ganga and Yamuna upon my head. I buried my face in the end of Mother's sari.
"Mother, I need you — who else do we have besides you? Truly, who? I study for your sake. If you weren't there, for whose sake would I study, for whose sake would I live? Mother! God is not to take you away from us!" So saying, I held Mother tight. It was as if death itself had come at that very moment to take her, and so I clung to her, holding her fast.
"Whatever God does, He does for the good. You just turn out well — that's all that's needed." Mother said.

Now no one spoke in the cart. On Mother's lap, overflowing with devotion, love, gratitude, and every tender feeling, I laid my head. After a while I said to Mother again, "Mother! When we were little you used to tell a story. A beggar's son would scatter four grains from his bag onto the road. By morning those grains would turn into a beautiful golden feather. Mother! Something like that will happen to us too, won't it? Our poverty will go away. Good days will come."

"Shyam! What is impossible for God? He turns night into day. He turns poison into nectar. Did God not give Sudama a city of gold? But we are simple, ordinary people of the household. Where do we have such merit?" Mother said.

"Mother! God's grace is always present, isn't it? Even if poverty comes, even if insults come, even if we must suffer hardship and torment, that too is grace — is that true, they say?" I asked.

"Child! Your ignorant mother doesn't understand all this. Only this much I know — whatever God does, He does for the good. When I beat you as a child, wasn't it for your own good? Then how much more compassionate must God be than I, many times over. One must place one's faith in Him. Whether He gives a cup of poison or a cup of nectar, one must have faith in Him." Mother seemed to be singing, as it were, a very Upanishad of faith.

Suddenly my eyes fell on something ahead. "A tiger! Mother! A tiger!" I cried out in fright. What blazing eyes, what a magnificent, fearsome face! What majesty! From the forest on the right it passed into the forest on the left. As an actor enters the stage and exits, so it did. Had it come to listen to the loving talk between mother and son? Had it come to bear witness to God's compassion? Beasts and birds loved my mother. Cows and cattle, cats, loved her. I shall tell the story of the cat at the very end. A cat is the tiger's aunt, they say; if a cat loved my mother, then why should not a tiger too? It had come to have a sight of my mother. Setting aside its ferocity, it had come humbly to pay its respects.

Slowly the town of Dapoli came into view. Distant lights began to twinkle. At nine at night we reached home. Mother did not go to Palgad that same night. She went the next day.

Friends! That day and that night have become immortal in my life. Never again after that did my mother and I go anywhere together. That one single day! On that one day alone, my mother and I were in the company of Mother Nature — of the sea and the woodland groves. The two of us reveled together. We were immersed in love. We poured our hearts into each other's hearts. After that day, ever greater hardship and calamity began to enter my mother's life. God was trying to make the gold of my mother's life pure, hundred-touch gold. He began to put her into an ever fiercer furnace. Friends, my mother was nothing less than a goddess fallen under a curse.

Saying this, Shyam suddenly got up and left. Everyone sat in stunned silence. After a while people came back to themselves and went off to their own homes, their hearts full.
