Forty-First Night: The Form Made of Ash
I was not with Aai. I was studying far away. I was studying without being able to serve my mother. But I was studying so that one day I might be able to serve her. That night I dreamed of Aai, and in the dream she said to me, "Why haven't you come to see me? Didn't they tell you? You left angry that day. Hasn't your anger gone yet? Children's anger passes quickly — why hasn't yours passed? Come, come and see me." When I woke in the morning and remembered that dream, I felt strangely uneasy. The thought came to me — surely Aai isn't very ill today? I wished I had wings, so I could fly straight to her. But how far it was! It would have taken two full days to get there. Train, steamer, bullock-cart — what a long journey it was!
I felt wretched. I could find no peace. I longed to go home and see Aai. But — money?
I had made a new friend. His name, too, was Namdev. Just as much love and devotion as the devotee Namdev had for Pandurang of Pandharpur, that same love and devotion this Namdev had for me, Shyam. It was as if he had become entirely mine, and I entirely his. How many times we used to say, "Yuyam vayam, vayam yuyam" — you are we, we are you! Everything in my heart he understood without my ever speaking it. There is a line in that hymn of Nanak's, isn't there — "Without a word he knew my sorrow, he only repeated his own name" — it is enough merely to take God's name; He understands our grief without our speaking it. So it was that Namdev understood my joys and sorrows. He could read the book of my life, the book of my heart. He read my eyes, my expression, exactly. It was as if we were each other's very forms. As if in two bodies there dwelt a single mind, a single heart. As if in mind and in heart we were twins.
"Namdev! I feel like going home. I have a feeling that Aai is very ill. I've had this restless ache in me, without stopping." I said.
"Then go, and see her." he said.
"I would go and feast my eyes on Aai! But — money?" I said.
"Didn't my money order arrive just yesterday? It's as if it came just for you. There are ten rupees. Will that be enough for you? Go and see Aai, and give her my pranam. Go." Namdev said.
I set off with a little luggage. Namdev came to see me off at the station. I got into the train. Both our eyes had filled with tears.
"Write to me right away, Shyam." Namdev said.
"Yes." I said.
"I would have come with you. But there's no money." he said.
"You are with me anyway." I said.
The train pulled out. My loving Namdev passed out of sight. The train pulled out, and from my eyes the tears broke loose — a hundred streams of tears. Again and again my heart welled up within me. My face was out of the train window. I went on my way, sprinkling the earth with my tears.
Getting down at Boribunder, I went straight on to the steamer, without delay. For if I had gone to Girgaon to see my brother, I would have missed the boat. I boarded the steamer. The boat danced upon the waves; my heart, too, danced with a hundred feelings. Rabindranath's Gitanjali was in my hand.
"Mother, this garland of my tears shall hang upon your breast." I was reading this. And truly, what else did I have to give my poor mother? I too had nothing to give besides tears. Now and then I would close the Gitanjali and look out at the heaving sea before me. On this sea a hundred waves rose and broke. One wave gave birth to the next. On the sea of my heart a hundred memories rose and broke. One memory gave birth to the next. Hundreds of memories of Aai, hundreds of moments charged with feeling, came before my eyes, one after another. I lost myself, absorbed like a meditating sage, in that realm of dreams, that realm of memory. I was steeped in it, dyed through with it. In the memory-sea of my mother, this fish called Shyam swam, dove, and danced.

At Harne port the lighthouse came into view. The sailors began calling out, "Harne! Harne!" The passengers who were to disembark began tying up their bundles. I tied up my own small bundle. In another seven or eight hours, I told myself, I would see Aai's feet, I would see her eyes, those pools brimming with love.
Harne port arrived. The launch came alongside the steamer. People climbed down into it.
I climbed down into the launch too. From the shore someone was watching me. I was not paying attention that way; but that person's attention was fixed on me. Seeing me, someone's eyes on the shore were filling with tears. Whose figure was that?
The launch came to rest. I climbed out quickly. I waded through the water onto the shore. I was walking fast, taking quick steps. Just then, who caught my eye? Mavshi! My aunt was standing right before my eyes.
"Mavshi! What are you doing here? Are you going back to Pune? Aai must be doing better, I suppose?" I asked. Mavshi's Ganga and Yamuna answered me — her tears streamed down.
"Mavshi! Why don't you say something?" I asked, pleading.
"Shyam! Your mother, my Akka, has gone to God!" she said.
The ocean of my grief could not be held back. We went to the dharamshala. Neither of us could speak a word.
"Why didn't you send for me? I saw a dream, and that is why I set out. In the dream Aai was calling me. But where is Aai now? Aai has gone from me forever!" I said, and began to weep.
"Shyam! That day she kept remembering you, over and over. She kept seeing you before her. She said, he's still stubborn, that one. Shyam! I never thought Akka would be gone within two days. I had decided to send for you — but that very day, Akka was gone! I did everything I could. I never let hardship touch her. I am here for you all, you know. Akka placed you all in my keeping. I will not let you feel the absence of your mother. There, there — how much will you cry?" Mavshi was trying to comfort me.
"Mavshi! What great dreams I had! I would give my mother happiness, I would keep her like a flower — this is what I used to say to myself. But now, what is the use of my studying? If, by studying, I cannot serve my mother, cannot be of use to her, then what is the use of studying at all?" I said.
"Study for your brothers, for your father; study for us. Study for the world. Whatever love you meant to give your mother, give it to the world. Give it to the sorrowing mothers of this world." Mavshi said, opening a new vision to me.
"Mavshi! Are you setting off back now?" I asked.
"Yes. I cannot bear to stay on there any longer. You go home. Tomorrow is the third day. The asthi-sinchan is tomorrow. You were her darling — that is why you've come, for the last rites. When you come back, bring the ashes with you. We'll carry them to the Ganga and immerse them there." Mavshi said. "Mavshi! How can I go into that house? How can I go into a house filled with darkness?" I said.
"In that darkness, though Aai's moon-face is no longer there, your father's star is there. Your brother's star is there. It is not all darkness there. There is love there. Go home, give them courage. You are sensible, a thoughtful boy, one who reads the Gitanjali, the Gita," Mavshi said.
"Now who will say, 'Shyam! So you've come — wait, let me set out some jaggery for God'? Mavshi, who will say that to me now?" I said.
"Shyam! These loving memories are yours to keep. Even though Aai is gone, Aai in the form of love, Aai in the form of memory, is still with you. Wherever you go, she is there. Come, let us arrange a cart for you." So saying, she hired a bullock-cart for me. Mavshi's steamer began to show far off. The launch was about to leave. Mavshi went away. Mavshi, who was taking Aai's place, went off to board the launch.
I got into the bullock-cart. Memories of Aai kept coming to me. In the sea of my life, again and again I seemed to see Aai's radiant form rising up through a hundred waves. I began to see Aai's toil and suffering before me. Mother, embodiment of compassion! Her love, her service, began to appear to me as vast as a mountain.
At last I reached home. I had once come, just so, at dawn, long before. At that time Aai had been churning buttermilk, singing sweet songs of Krishna. Today, what song could there be in that house? There was only lamentation! A dim, flickering lamp burned inside. A ghastly silence lay over everything. I pushed at the door. It had no latch on the inside. The door opened. Father was sitting on a piece of sackcloth.
"Shyam! You are two days too late. She has left us, son, she is gone!" he said.
Purushottam woke. "Anna, Anna," he cried, and began to weep. He threw his arms around me. Neither of us could say a word.
"Durva's grandmother said, "She kept remembering you, Shyam, only you. You were her darling. At least you've come now, for her last rites. Don't cry. What remedy is there now? She was needed alive until all of you were grown. But it was not His will." I listened.
I went to the river for the gathering of the ashes. The priest was with me. I went to the riverbank, to the spot where Aai's blessed body had been consecrated to fire. There her form of ash lay, as if asleep. The form of ash remained exactly as it had been — not even the wind had disturbed that fragile shape in the least. I bowed before that form of ash. All that was earthly had dissolved away, and only the sacred, ash-formed body remained. A body of the purest ash was there. Through the austerities of her life, that body had already turned to ash long before — it had already burned away from within. It had become as sacred as the ash upon Shankara's own body. In spirit, of course, she had always been pure.

I touched it — I laid my hand upon it. The form of ash broke apart. Even as I created an unbreakable form within my own heart, I broke that form of ash. If this perishable form could create within someone's heart an imperishable form of itself, what great fortune that would be. I gathered Aai's bones. Among them were found the beads of her mangalsutra; my uncle took them away as tokens of good fortune, to put around his own wife's neck.
Having performed all the rites, we went home. The days passed, one by one. Each day passed as I listened to one more story from Purushottam's lips. Purushottam would read to me, as it were, the sacred Guru-Puran of Aai's memory, and I would listen. Indu and Radhatai from next door also told me their memories. Listening to Aai's hardships, sob after sob would rise in my throat.

The day of Aai's pindadan arrived. Thoughts kept coming to my mind — would a crow touch her pinda quickly, or might there still be some unfulfilled wish of hers left behind? They say that if a crow does not touch the pinda, the departed soul finds no peace. We went to the river. The pindas were prepared. All the rites were performed. The pindas were laid upon darbha grass. No crow was to be seen anywhere on the river. The priest called out, cawing, to summon the crows. "There, one crow has come, and now a second one too," my uncle said. We felt relieved. Having set down the pindas, we stepped aside. The crows would settle near the pinda, but would not touch it. What was to be done? They circled round and round the pinda, but would not touch it. I began to feel wretched. I said, "Aai! If it is your wish, I will marry. I will not become an ascetic." Still the crow would not touch it. My uncle said, "We will never let Bhau want for anything. We will love him, Vayani, as our own." Still the crow would not touch it. I carried the pinda about, moving it from place to place, almost dancing with desperation. My heart was ready to break into sobs. If a crow will not touch the pinda, people fashion a crow out of darbha grass and make that touch it instead; but in this village such a thing becomes the talk of everyone. That thought distressed me. I said, "Let us take the pinda home. Perhaps it will be touched there. Don't make the darbha crow just yet."

With heavy hearts we carried the pinda home from the river. We set it down at the edge of the courtyard, beside the banana plant. Crows gathered round it, but not one would touch it!

"At last Durva's grandmother came out of the house. She said, "Yashoda, don't worry about anything. I am here for Purushottam. I will see to everything for him." What a wonder! The very moment those reassuring words left the old woman's lips, a crow touched the pinda at once.

Tears came to my eyes. Mavshi had already gone on ahead, alone. Little Purushottam would now stay at home with grandmother. He was a bit mischievous. That he would be neglected, that he would be beaten, scolded — this alone was Aai's worry. This alone was Aai's one anxiety. Aai! How immense was your love! Your love cannot be measured. It is vaster than the sky and deeper than the sea. From this earthly mother one may form some notion of how full of love God Himself must be. It is only to give the world some notion of His own love that the World-Mother sends forth these small, mortal mothers.

"Friends! My mother has died. Her life came to its end, but her anxious care did not come to its end. So long as all of a mother's children are not happy, the mother has no happiness. So long as tears are falling from even one of her children's eyes, so long as cries of anguish rise from even one of their mouths, so long as even one of them has no clothing, no food, no learning, a mother's anxious care will never end. Not until brothers all help one another in love, hold none as greater or lesser, raise one another up, look after one another, feed one another, bring laughter to one another — not until a mother is certain of this will she know happiness, will she know peace, will she know release. Until then she will only go on weeping! Until then the pyre of her anxious care will only go on burning, crackling on and on!"
