Thirty-Ninth Night: All of You Live in Love
Shyam's story had begun. Far off, dogs were barking — the Vadar people had camped nearby; the dogs were theirs. "Sakhu Mavshi tended my mother day and night. It was as though she had been born already knowing how to nurse the sick — a nurse by birth. She made Aai's bed clean. She spread her own bedsheet beneath Aai and gave her a clean pillow for her head. She kept a bowl with ash at the bottom beside Aai for her to spit into, and covered it with a piece of plank. Every day Mavshi cleaned that bowl herself. With the doors shut, twice a day she would soak a towel in properly warm water, wring it out, and wipe Aai's body clean with it. She had brought a thermometer with her, and checked the fever properly. When the fever rose too high, she would lay a cologne-water compress on Aai's forehead. She spread paper over the oilcloth beneath Aai and had her relieve herself on it; then she would remove that paper and lay down a fresh one. She took as much care of Aai as it was possible to take. She would not give Aai rice. She started her on subscription milk instead — the milk that had been set to curd in the morning she would stir at night, and the milk set to curd through the night she would stir in the morning. She would strain it, for otherwise butter would form, and this half-set buttermilk was what Mavshi gave Aai to drink. She had brought oranges with her when she came, and she doled out their juice to Aai sparingly, little by little. In all her life Aai had never been looked after so well as Mavshi looked after her now. All her life she had suffered hardship; but in her dying, Mavshi did not let hardship touch her. Mavshi was compassion and service made flesh! Utterly selfless, and utterly careful.

"That Mathi keeps crying meow-meow. Didn't you give her rice today?" Aai asked. Aai's favorite cat was named Mathi. Mathi never so much as touched the milk-pot; a mere drop of milk was enough to satisfy her. A very well-behaved cat. Even in her illness, Aai would ask after that cat too.

"Akka, I gave her rice, but she only touched it with her mouth. Rice with milk and ghee — but she didn't eat it. Perhaps she caught a mouse or something." Mavshi said.

"Or else her stomach must be hurting her. Poor dumb creature! She cannot speak, cannot tell us." Aai said.

Aai's illness kept worsening. It never took a step back; it only advanced. My elder brother came from Mumbai, having taken four days' leave, to see Aai at home. He had only just gotten a job, and leave was hard to come by. Only after a great deal of pleading did he manage to get four days off.

"Seeing Aai, he broke down. "Aai! What is this state you're in! You were here, working away. Aai, we were eating our fill over there, while you couldn't even get a morsel!" he said, and began to weep. Young Purushottam had told him the whole story — how Aai had suffered, how she had gone about crying her wares — he told him all of it. Dada's heart was rent in two.

"Aai said, "It goes on as it goes on. My children, whether this body is given good or given ill, as long as God has a use for running this machine, it will keep running. You mustn't grieve over it. Do you live in luxury over there? You too work all day long. You sent five rupees — it made me feel blessed. Out of nineteen rupees you sent them five — truly, it was as if a handful of flesh grew back on me. It was the first money order to come from a son, and it made them so happy. Now I have no worry left. Preparing you all was my only task! You have turned out well — that is good. Whether or not money comes to you, you have the wealth of good character — now I have no anxiety. Shyam is over there; Mavshi will raise this Purushottam. Give each other love. Never let there be a gap between you." Aai was, as it were, taking her leave of them all.

"Aai! Shall I stay here with you? Shall I stay? What use is that job to me? If it keeps me from serving my mother, what use is a job? Aai, I have no hunger for a job, truly I don't. My superiors' boots are not more worthy of my reverence than the service of your feet. Aai! In your feet, in serving you, lies my whole welfare, my whole fortune, my salvation, my everything. Aai, whatever you tell me, I will do. I have already written out my resignation. Shall I send it off?" Dada spoke, choked with tears.

"Aai thought a moment and said quietly, "Gaju! Sakhumavshi is here just now. Jobs are hard enough to come by as it is — keep the one you've got hold of with such difficulty. Go on sending them five rupees. Even two would do. But remember, every month, send something. In their service lies my service. I am not going to die just yet — I am not fortunate enough for that. I will die slowly, wasting away bit by bit. If it should become truly needful, I will send for you again, son."

Dada set off to go back to Mumbai. Unlucky, like unlucky Shyam, unlucky Gajanan set off too. He had no notion that this was his last sight of Aai. He laid his head upon her feet. He brought his face close to hers. Aai passed her thin hand, a hand brimming with love, over his face and his head — she passed that blessed hand over him. "Go, son; don't worry. Write to Shyam only that I am well. Don't let him worry needlessly. All of you live together in love. Never let a gap come between you!" Aai gave him her message.

With a heavy heart Dada left. He left because duty required it — the truth is, worldly life is a very hard thing.
