"I was eleven years old at the time. I had first been sent to Pune, to my mama's house, to learn English. My elder brother was studying there too. But I did not behave well at my mama's house; I ran away from there two or three times. I told all sorts of false, mischievous tales while I was there. In the end, Mama felt it was better not to keep such a wild, wandering nephew about the place — that one day he might put a noose round his own neck, or someone else's, for no good reason — and so he sent me back home.

At that time, everything at our home in the Konkan had taken a strange turn. Father had just been released from jail, having served out his sentence in a case arising from the Swadeshi movement. His health had grown very frail, and so he had gone off to stay with some distant relation on the seacoast to recover his strength. My elder sister had come home to her maher, meaning to spend a few happy days there, but instead she fell gravely ill. The whole burden of the household work fell upon Aai. There was no other woman in the house at that time. My sister was very ill. It was into this state of things that we came home from Pune. No one paid me any attention at all; I had become the one nobody wanted. Everyone doted on my Akka, everyone loved her. She had a baby girl at the breast, and that little girl was suffering badly in those days, for she could get none of her mother's milk. Her mother's hand could not even touch her tender little body. Akka had come down with typhoid, so nursing the baby at her breast would have been dangerous, for that milk had turned poisonous. Because of this, that little Rangu was very badly neglected.

One day Akka fell into delirium. Whatever torment she had suffered at her sasar, she had never once spoken of it at her maher. But now, in her delirium, all that grief stored up within her came pouring out in words. She was not in her senses. In that unconscious state she poured out all that was in her heart, and hearing it grieved Aai terribly. So much money spent on the wedding, she thought, and still this torment at the sasar — why should it have to be so?

Just as feuding among kinsmen is one of our vices, so too is sasurvas, the tormenting of a daughter-in-law. A girl comes into the family from another house; truly it ought to be the duty of her parents-in-law to become her own father and mother. But instead they feel that a servant bought by their authority has arrived. The day the torments of the sasar cease is counted a lucky day. The very word sasurvas carries within it a whole history. Girls sing ovis, and see how they describe sasurvas in them.

The words of the sasar are like bitter-gourd vines, however hard you try, they will never taste sweet The words of the sasar are like knots in silken thread, day and night they set one weeping, sobbing without end

Ovis like these paint this pitiful picture. These ovis were composed by women themselves; in them they set down this wretched, helpless account of their own condition. The bitter vine of the karle, the knots in silken thread — comparisons like these could only occur to women. Even the plainest humanity is still something mankind has yet to learn. A mother-in-law torments a daughter-in-law, and when that same daughter-in-law becomes a mother-in-law in her turn, she does exactly the same. As if the tradition of cruelty handed down by our forefathers must be kept unbroken forever. There is even a saying for it: four days belong to the mother-in-law, four days to the daughter-in-law. Just as a schoolmaster beats his pupils, and that pupil, once he becomes a schoolmaster himself, does the very same thing — it is just like that. 'We were beaten, so we beat,' is the answer many teachers give. Watch closely when boys and girls play their games. If girls are playing at mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, you will see, among the torments given to the girl playing daughter-in-law, her hair pulled, a pretend burn-mark put on her hand, being made to eat stale food, and other such things. Watch, too, the game of playing school. Some post is made into a pupil, and it is beaten soundly! "Make trouble again, will you — want another beating!" — shouting such things, the children, turned schoolmasters, thrash the post. My sister has a little boy, five or six years old. He tells me, "Anna, I want to become a schoolmaster, or else a peon." If I ask him, "Why did you pick just these two trades?" he says, "So I can beat everyone. I'll thrash the whole lot of them!" See what notion of a schoolmaster has taken root in his mind. That is exactly why school feels like sasurvas. School, and the sasar too, ought to become like one's own maher. You may say I am wandering off somewhere; but these things make my blood boil. That we should lack even plain humanity! My great culture, which teaches love even for beasts and birds, for the tiniest ant, for trees and groves — how degenerate the heirs of that culture have grown today. To see how we have forgotten even simple humanity makes the heart burn, makes it writhe. But let that be.

Somehow getting through the midday meal, all of us sat around Akka. Cold water had been poured into a tamhan, a metal plate, and the plate was being held against Akka's forehead. In a village, where would one find ice-bags? Where would one find cologne water? Aai sat holding the plate. Everyone's face had grown pinched, like a sparrow's. What came into my Aai's mind just then, who can say — but she asked me to hold the plate and got up. She rose and went to the household shrine. Going into the puja room, she said to the god, "O God, O Shankar — I will come to your temple and smear your pinda with curd-rice for three days running, only let my girl recover. Let her fever turn. Let the burning of her body ease. Let the fever come down." The effort went on, and alongside the effort, the prayer went on too. Aai had faith in God, yet she kept up her nursing, day and night, all the same. Into one's own effort, one's own fervent longing must bring God's help as well.

"Rangu's woken in the cradle — go, take her outside. Don't let her cry in here," Aai said to me. I got up, took Akka's little daughter onto my shoulder, and went outside, jogging her to keep her amused. I walked Rangu about here and there till I grew tired of it and came back inside. It was close to dusk. Outside, the women who had been set to pound grain had their pounding to be measured out and paid for. It was the hour for the cattle to come into the shed. The cowherd would call, "The cattle are here, ho!" and pass on; the cattle had to be tied up. In the midst of all this bustle of work, I too left Rangu right there and went outside. That tiny Rangu began to cry. Was she crying for her mother? Was she crying because she longed for her mother's hand, brimming with love, to touch her body? Was she hungry for her mother to look on her with love? Poor mute child! Small, helpless soul! Her mother lay tossing in her bed, muttering now and again in her delirium. Rangu did not even get to see her mother's face once in two whole days. Was her small soul crying out to be united with her mother? Wailing in anguish? Was she saying, in her own way, "Take me and lay me beside my mother, let me rest a moment in her lap. I want no milk, I want nothing — I'm not starving for that. Only let that thin, wasted hand of my mother's touch me — that alone will nourish me"? Who could understand the language of her crying? Who could ever come to know that infant heart, that little soul? Rangu began to sob, heartbroken. She began to wail. She was in anguish.

What was my Aai to do, then? Should she go measure out the pounded grain, or light the lamp and show it to the gods and the tulsi, or tie up the cattle, or draw the milk, or make the medicine, or cook the rice and the sabzi, or amuse Rangu, or sit by Akka's side? Did she have a thousand hands? Aai! Blessed are you. Only women as hard-working as women themselves could bear such labour — only they could endure a hundred such trials. For the toil and the forbearance of Indian women, only one comparison would do justice — that of Mother Earth herself, and none other. Whatever household holds such noble women within it seems to me a shrine, a temple of God. Such women I count as goddesses themselves, and before their feet I bow my head. I know of no other temples.

My Aai's patience gave way at last. She grew angry too. Even her forbearance, her endurance, had its limits, its bounds. "Where has this wretch got to? All he does is eat, the rascal! Won't move a straw from here to there! Off lighting lamps somewhere, and now he's come here to torment his mother. Told him just to mind the child a bit, and he's sulked off like a great castor-oil plant. Three times a day he wants his food, though, this good-for-nothing. Nothing but a burden, this one. Shyamya, you wretch! Pick her up, will you! Look, the poor thing's in anguish. Seems she's holding her breath. You won't die, oh no — you're the one left behind just to torment me." Aai went on like this, half out of her mind with grief and rage.

I stood listening to Aai's words. But it was her last words that struck me to the quick. I began to cry. Weeping, I picked up the wailing Rangu and went outside. I held her to my chest and began reciting shlokas. I said the Ramraksha. Carrying her, I paced round and round the courtyard without stopping. Rangu fell asleep on my shoulder.

Aai's words had jolted me awake. I understood, then, what one ought to live for. A spark does not fly unless flint strikes flint. In my own life, that day, a spark struck; a glow kindled, a light dawned. A person of worth, the world wants and welcomes. What use is a worthless, luckless life? I have not the slightest use to anyone; my life is nothing but a burden on everyone; everyone suffers trouble on my account — that was what I felt that day. My life took a turn from that very day. A new direction opened before me. They say everything has its appointed hour, and that is no lie. That day, too, I prayed to God. Looking up at the sky, at the stars just beginning to rise, I prayed, "God! From today I shall try to become good. Be pleased with this resolve of mine. Make me good, and make my Akka well again too!"

From that day, this much is true, Akka began slowly to mend. My Akka, in time, got well again. She recovered in body, and I recovered in spirit. Between the two of us, each in our own way, there was a rebirth. Akka received a new body; I received a new heart.
