Shyam was not feeling quite well. Ram said, 'It's all right if you don't tell a story today. You should lie down and rest.'

"Oh, remembering my mother is like a salve that heals every sorrow. Just as a devotee's suffering vanishes the moment he remembers God, so it is with me the moment I remember my mother. Today a lovely memory of my mother has come to me. Sit down, all of you," Shyam said, and began.

'Friends! Even if a person is poor, even if he is destitute in outward things, he should still be rich in spirit. A great many of the world's sorrows have arisen out of poverty of the heart. Let the rest of the world carry off India's outward wealth if it must; but let no one carry off the great and unbreakable treasure within the Indian heart, that is all I ask.

'At our house there was a woman named Mathuri who used to pound our rice. In the Konkan every household keeps a year's supply of paddy laid by, stored at home. This paddy has to be pounded to make rice. The women who come to do this work are called kandapinis, rice-pounders. Every household has its own fixed kandapinis, and it is as good as a hereditary right — generation after generation of the same family comes to do the pounding. At our house there were two or three kandapinis, Mathuri, Gajari, Lakshmi. Mathuri's son Shivram used to work at our house too; he was young then, ten or twelve years old.

'In the summer Mathuri used to bring us ripe karvanda berries, alu fruit, and the like. Ripe, deep-black karvanda berries are, so to speak, the grapes of the poor Konkan. Alu too is a sweet fruit. It has a tawny colour. Inside it has thick seeds. There was an alu tree right at Mathuri's own house, and the alu fruit from it was very sweet. Poor people are always grateful. Sometimes with a leaf or a flower, sometimes with a piece of fruit, they show their gratitude. There is nothing on this earth as noble and as beautiful as the spirit of gratitude.

'What is it, Gajari? Mathuri hasn't come to pound the rice today, it seems? Who is this other woman who's come?' our mother asked.
Gajari said, 'Mathuri has a fever. Mathuri has sent this girl Chandri in her place.'
That sense of duty — that if she herself could not come to work, she must send someone else so the work should not be left undone — was there even in that poor hired woman.
'Is the fever very bad?' our mother asked.
Just then Mathuri's son Shivram arrived and said, 'Shyamchi Aai! My mother has a fever. Once she's better she'll come to pound the rice; until then this Chandri will keep coming.'
'All right, then,' our mother said. Shivram went off to his work. The rice-pounder measured out the paddy. Our mother, having set the pounding going, took the washing and went off to the well.

Around noon, about twelve o'clock, our household had its meal. Shivram came to say he was going home.

'Have you watered the cattle, have you cleared away their dung and so on? Otherwise they'll trample it underfoot and end up sitting in it; put some fodder out for them too,' our mother was telling him. Shivram said, 'I've done it all. I'm going now.' 'Wait, Shivram. Come here a moment.' Our mother went into the house and came back with hot rice on a banana leaf and a piece of lime pickle. She brought buttermilk in a small copper pot. 'Shivram, take this for your mother. Tell her to get well soon.' So saying, she gave him all of it and went back into the house. Shivram tied up the rice, leaf and all, in his kerchief, took the pot in his hand, and went home.

Evening twilight came. School had let out for us. We were reciting our evening prayers. 'Gajari! Wipe that oil-lamp clean with rice bran and set it out properly,' our mother said. In our house a lamp was kept burning by the god's image every night. It was the custom that on the day of pounding rice, the lamp was to be wiped clean. Wiping it with rice bran makes the lamp spotless. Gajari began wiping the lamp. Our mother began measuring out the pounded rice. The kandapinis were given their share of broken rice, dhapat, and the like. Dhapat is the fine bran that falls off when rice is being husked. The rice-pounders went off.

Shivram watered the plants, milked the cattle. Our mother milked the cow. Shivram was about to leave for home. That evening our mother had asked me to gather and bring back some lemongrass. Some ginger was planted in the tulsi bed. I dug up some ginger from there. Our mother said to Shivram, 'Shivram, take this lemongrass with you. Take this piece of ginger too. At home, make a decoction of it, put in four coriander seeds and a peepal leaf, and give it to your mother good and hot. Then cover her up well, and she'll sweat it out and feel better. Wait, let me give you two lumps of sugar candy too.' So saying, our mother went inside and brought out the sugar candy. Shivram took it all and set off.

Shivram said, 'Shyam's mother.'

Mathuri said, 'She's a saint, that mother — she cares for everyone.' That night Mathuri drank the lemongrass decoction, but even so she did not sweat, and her fever did not break. In the morning Shivram came to work again.

'Shivram! How is your mother?' our mother asked.

'Her head hurts a lot, it keeps throbbing; she just sits with her hand pressed to her forehead. She didn't sleep at all last night,' he told her.

'All right, when you go this afternoon I'll give you dried ginger and deer-horn. Rub them together and give her a good paste for her forehead, that will bring her relief,' our mother said.

With that he lost himself in his work. Shivram began sweeping the cowshed. He set out cakes of dried dung. Our mother began chopping vegetables and the like.

Midday came round. As on the day before, Shivram set off with a mango-sized ball of rice and a piece of pickle. Our mother gave him the dried ginger and deer-horn to take along. It is said that deer-horn has medicinal properties. If a paste made from dried ginger, sweet flag, and deer-horn is applied to the forehead, headaches subside. If some other part of the body aches too, this same paste is applied.

After some days Mathuri recovered. She had grown terribly thin. She had become weak; but she began coming to work again. For fifteen or twenty days she had not come to work at all. Seeing her come to pound rice, our mother said, 'Mathurye! How thin you've grown! Will you manage the pounding?'
Mathuri said, 'I'll manage the pounding, sitting and rising as I need to. I've had enough of lying about in bed and being fed all these days; now I can get about and move around again. In another few days I'll be strong as ever! With your kindness towards us, what could we ever lack?'
Our mother said, 'Oh, it's all God's grace. How much can any of us provide for one another, after all! But listen, the children's rice is ready. You eat a few mouthfuls with them too, so you'll have a little strength for the pounding. Eat your midday meal here today, properly, do you hear?'
That day Mathuri ate her morning meal along with us. How much gratitude showed on Mathuri's face then!
That Mathuri has grown old now. Whenever I happen to go to the Konkan, I go to see Mathuri. Her face is lined with wrinkles now. And yet a certain serenity and tenderness can still be seen on her face. When I go and bow at her feet, she says, 'Oh, what is this, Shyam!' She remembers my mother, and says, 'Shyam! If your mother were alive, she would never have let you stay a bachelor like this. She would have made you marry. Poor thing, she died so soon. Her affection reached everyone.'

Such was the loving and compassionate mother I was given.
