Twenty-fifth Night: All Are Dear to God
It was about four or five in the evening. It was a holiday, so I had gone home. Aai had gone to the temple for darshan. I was home by myself. When Aai came back from her devotions, I asked her, "Aai! Shall I go out? I'll go to Kamlya Devdhar's place, or else to Banya Varvadekar's. If Bapu Gondhalekar comes here, tell him I'm probably at Banya's. May I go?"
Aai said, "Shyam! You may go. But let me give you one task first — do it before you go. There's a Maharin woman sitting in front of Baaldada's gate. Quite an old woman. The bundle of firewood on her head has fallen down. It needs to be put back up on her head. That Maharin looks sick and feeble. Set the bundle on her head and come home; I'll give you a bath then. Go."
"Aai! If people see me, they'll laugh at me. They'll come to beat me; they'll just caw and caw and come pecking at me. Shall I really go?" I asked.
"Tell people, 'I'm going home to bathe. How long is that old woman going to sit here waiting for some Mahar or other to pass by? She has to sell her bundle and go all the way back to the Maharwada' — say something of that sort, and come home," Aai said.
All I knew was that Aai's word was to be obeyed. I went. I made it look to the old woman as if I were simply passing along the road. I was careful that she shouldn't think I had come specially for her. I asked her, "What is it, old woman — does that bundle need putting up on your head? Let me set it up." So saying, I began lifting the bundle from one side.
"No, no, son, don't — you're a Brahmin. If someone sees, they'll beat me! No, son. Go on, child. Someone will come from the Maharwada with a headband and set it on my head." So she pleaded, begging me off.
"Never mind, I'll bathe once I get home — here, take it," I said, and at last hoisted the bundle onto her head. "Hey, Shyam! That's the Maharin, isn't it? What, did you touch her? Have you turned into such a sahib already, learning English? This must be reported to Bhaurao." Shridharbhat appeared from nowhere and began scolding me. Just then, hearing his voice, another gentleman who had been sitting on the veranda of the house next door also came out and began saying, "Shyam! You've gone quite out of your senses. Have you no sense of propriety left at all!"
I said to them, "I am going to go home and bathe. I'm not going to walk straight into the house and pollute it. How long was that old woman supposed to wait? It would turn dark before she could get away, and she has to cross the river. I am going to bathe. I know well enough that 'bathing purifies' — snānāt śuddhiḥ." So saying, I walked off.
I came home. Aai said, "Call that old woman over to our place. Why should she go far off carrying that bundle? It might fall again. Besides, our own firewood is running low too. Go, call her."
"Hey there, firewood-seller! Come here," I called to her. She came in through our gate. Aai decided how many measures of rice to give her. I brought rice out of the grain-bin and poured it into the fold of her sari. Aai asked her, "Old woman, are you unwell?"
"Yes, mother. The fever comes on badly. What can one do, the stomach must be filled, after all!" she said.
"There's rice left over from the afternoon. It's gone stale. Shall I give it to you?" Aai asked.
"Give it, Aai, may God grant you well-being. In this world nobody belongs to the poor, you see!" the pitiful old woman said.
Aai brought the rice out on a leaf-plate. I gave it to her. Sitting at the edge of the yard, she ate it.
"Will you pour a little water for me, son?" she said to me.
I fetched water and, standing at a distance, poured it into her cupped palms. Having drunk the water and blessed me, she went on her way.
"Come, Shyam, go bathe now," Aai told me. Aai poured water over me from a distance, standing by the banana tree, and once my whole body was wet I sat on the other stone. Then, drawing the water myself with my own hands, I bathed. After bathing I went into the house. I said to Aai, "Aai, you remember that feast at the Khers' — that day, wasn't there a poor Maharin woman begging at the door of the pandal? We were eating inside, eating puranpolis, and people kept pressing more on us; Bhaskarbhatji was urged so hard that he got angry and started to rise. But Apte made him sit back down. But that Maharin outside — nobody gave her a thing. She lay writhing in the sun. Inside, along the row of diners, they were fanning us and sprinkling scented water, serving vala-water; but that poor beggar-woman kept crying out, 'Give me a mouthful, son.' Aai! Nobody gave her even a mouthful of food or a bellyful of water. And more than that — there was a gentleman there, I don't know his name — he works in Bombay and was wearing a yellow silk dhoti; he was serving the food — he suddenly went outside the pandal and shouted at that Maharin woman, 'Have you no shame, begging at a time like this! The meal isn't even over. Come back for scraps once we've eaten. Inside, Brahmins are dining, and here you sit howling! You Mahars have gotten far too bold lately! Get out, or I'll fling my sandal at you!' So saying, Aai, that man in the yellow silk dhoti actually picked up his sandal. 'No, no, son, don't hit me, I'm going, son,' she said, and went away. Aai, this man eats at Irani hotels in Bombay. He polishes other people's shoes there. And here, in his own village, such airs, such pride! Didn't that Maharin a while ago say, 'Nobody belongs to the poor' — that is the plain truth. Aai! Tomorrow, if some Mahar's son were to come back a Mamlatdar, these very orthodox people would throw him a feast in their own homes. They would offer him betel leaf and areca nut, perfume, roses; they would garland his neck. Aai! Is bowing to money and power their only religion? Is that their only god? Taking a sandal in his hand did not pollute his yellow silk dhoti. Wearing sandals on their feet, these pure men, these silk-clad men, carrying their sacred waist-cloths in hand, go about however they please; but the very man who gave them the sandal to wear — he alone is filthy! Not even his shadow is wanted! Aai! How can this be? What sort of purity is this? Is this dharma? Would God be pleased by it? Is a single coin the only god they have, then?"
Aai said, "Child! In this world everyone bows down to money and power. They tell the story of that Pandharinath, don't they. He was poor once. In those days everyone just called him 'Pandya, Pandya'; but later he went off to the mainland, studied, became a lawyer. In Varhad-Khandesh he made money by the cartload. Then he once came back to his own village. He held a grand festival for our Someshwar. People began calling him 'Pandharinath Baba.' He went to visit someone's house. There they offered him a low wooden seat to sit on. He pushed the seat aside and said, 'Tatya, this seat — you haven't given it to me, you've given it to my money. Let me set these gold bangles of mine on it, and I'll sit on the bare floor myself. You give honor to money; you don't give honor to the man. You don't give honor to the God within a man's heart, to the true wealth within the heart. To you, these yellow and white stones and these paper notes alone are worthy of worship.' Shyam, that is what he used to say. We keep the Mahars and Mangs at a distance because they have no money. If they were to grow rich tomorrow, we ourselves would be counted as Mahars and Mangs. Shyam! Mahar or Mang, whoever it is, one must help them. One should come home afterward and bathe, because one still has to live within society. It is not that their touch is sinful — it is that we lack the courage to face society's censure, and that is our own sin. As for sin, we are all sinners alike."
"Truly, has anyone ever been freed of sin? Who can lay a hand on his chest and say, 'I am without sin'? If anything, aren't the Mahars and Mangs — who earn their bread by the honest sweat of their brow — the more virtuous ones, Aai?" I asked.
"Shyam! That field of ours near Vithnak — it really belongs to the Mahar. I know the whole story. Long ago we gave him a loan of a measure and a quarter of grain, or some such thing. By charging interest upon interest, we came to own that field. We ourselves, child, will be judged sinners before God. We shall have to stand there with our heads hung low, yes!" Aai said, grown sorrowful.
"Aai! Didn't God become Vithu the Mahar for Damaji's sake? If God thought a Mahar filthy, sinful, would He have taken on that very form?" I asked.
Aai said, "Shyam! To God every form is sacred. He took the form of a fish, the form of a tortoise, the form of a boar, the form of a lion. The meaning in this is simply that to God every form is sacred. God dwells in the body of a Brahmin, in the body of a fish, in the body of a Mahar too. God runs to save Gajendra, He grooms horses, He herds cows. Kubja too is dear to Him, and Shabari too is precious to Him. He loves Guha the fisherman, He loves Jatayu the bird, He loves Hanuman the monkey. Shyam! All are dear to God, because all are His own. You are dear to me because you are mine; in the same way, we are all God's, and so all are dear to Him. Just as you do what pleases me, so we must try to do what pleases God. But, Shyam — one who has no love for his own parents, his own brothers and sisters, will he ever love a Mahar, a Mang? Love everyone in your own house first. Then, like Eknath, you will find the strength to draw even a Mahar's daughter to your own breast. When love overflows the heart and can no longer be contained within it, it runs out toward everyone. Shyam, what more can I tell you? The scriptures say God is everywhere. What does a foolish woman like me really understand of it? When you grow up, you will understand."
Aai and I were still talking when it came time for the lamps to be lit. Someone called out to me from outside, "Shyam, Shyam," and so I went off.
Friends! Let us bury this false quarrel of high and low. Let us hold fast to this: that every person who serves society is sacred. Until that day comes, I shall go on saying just this.
