As a child I was deeply devoted to God. Reading one pothi after another, the seed of devotion had been sown in my heart, and it was slowly growing. The boys from school would gather at my house, and I would tell them stories of the gods and of saints and sadhus. At home I had made a little toy temple. I had built a small canopy over it, and decorated it with foil and tinsel till it shone. In it I had placed a beautiful shaligram. That shaligram looked wonderfully radiant. I used to feel that, like Chandrahas, I too ought always to keep it in my mouth.

When Sunday came, my friends and I would sing a great many bhajans. Sometimes we even performed katha-kirtan. Where would we have found instruments like the mridang! We would take some empty tin from the house and bang away on it with all our might, singing bhajans as we went. Our bhajan would set the whole lane ringing.

We would sing bhajans like these, ever so many of them, dancing as we went. We had memorized various dhave — verses of urgent supplication — for different occasions from the Bhaktivijay, and these too we would recite with folded hands.

Sweet dhave like these I still remember by heart even today, and even now, when I say them, my heart grows full.
We were not very grown up in those days. I was in the fifth standard of the Marathi school. I could not have been more than eleven years old. But in devotion and faith I was, in those days, greater than I am even today. In those days there was neither doubt nor scepticism — only a sweet, trusting, heartfelt devotion. I used to keep the waterless fast of Nirjali Ekadashi. I would repeat God's name, bathe in the month of Kartik, of Magh, of Vaishakh. In the pothi called Kathasaramrut, the importance of bathing is set out. It says in one place that if, after bathing, one wrings one's shendi — the tuft of hair — with the right hand, it turns to nectar. There is a story there of a Brahmin who woke a prince by wringing that tuft of hair into his mouth. I believed it to be true. Someone in our village had died. I asked Aai, "If I bathe at dawn and wring my shendi with my right hand into his mouth, he'll get up again, won't he?"

Aai laughed and said, "You're a foolish boy." Whether that innocent faith of those days was the better thing, or today's scepticism, I cannot say. But let that be. The story I mean to tell is a different one altogether.

During Chaturmas, a purana reading was held every day at the Ganapati temple in our village. Some shastribuwa or other would come and stay in our village for the four months. The reading of the pothi would begin around four or half past four in the evening. The Ganapati temple was not very far from our house. In those days we were living at our grandparents' house. If the purana in the temple was read in a loud voice, it could be heard in our house right opposite. Some five or ten men and ten or twenty women would sit for the purana.

That day was a Sunday. The purana had begun at the temple. Aai had gone to hear it. She never sat through the whole of it — she would sit a little while, have the darshan of the god, and come back. There was no one at home. We children had all gathered. It was decided we would sing bhajans. Empty tins from the house were brought out, we took up the taal, and the bhajan began. We started dancing, singing. That harsh clatter of the tins sounded sweet to us. In childhood every sound seems like music. Children delight in banging a tin — but to grown-ups it is nothing but a nuisance!

Our uproar disturbed the purana in the temple. Not a soul could hear the Shastribuwa's reading any more. "What wretched brats!" someone began to say. "This is all that Shyam's mischief — don't they understand the purana is going on here?" "But how can the people at home stand for this? Shouldn't they put a stop to it!" "Ah, these days they spoil their children rotten." Talk of this kind began in the temple. Our bhajan went on all the same, at full pitch. We had forgotten the whole world around us.
The people in the temple called for the guraw and said to him, "Go, tell Shyam's people to stop that racket. The purana is going on here." But before he could set off, my Aai had already come back from the temple. Hearing what the people had said, she was upset, and she was walking home quickly. We had, meanwhile, turned the whole house upside down.
We had no idea at all that Aai had come back. Even as she stood there, we went on dancing. At last Aai said sharply, "Shyam!" There was anger in that voice. I froze. The bhajan stopped; the taal and the tin-mridangs fell silent. Aai was angry.
"What is it, Aai?" I asked.
"Have you no shame, making such a racket—" Aai said angrily.
"Aai, what racket is this? We're singing bhajans before our own god. Wasn't it you who gave me this shaligram? Look how splendid he looks! We've made him a crown from the white pith of an umbrella flower. Are you angry about that?" I asked lovingly, holding the end of her sari. Just then Bhiku the guraw from the temple came up and said, "Shyam, the purana is going on at the temple. Stop this uproar of yours. No one can hear the purana over your shouting."
"We're not going to stop, so there. If their purana is going on, our bhajan is going on too," said one of my friends.
"Shyam, sing your bhajan a little more softly. What need is there to bang these tins? And these cymbals? God is not won by shouting loudly. If what we do troubles someone else, what kind of bhajan is that?" Aai said calmly.
"Even the saints and sadhus played cymbals and sang bhajans," I said.
"But they never played on purpose to trouble someone else. Had it troubled others, they would have stopped. Shyam, is it God's name that is dear to you, or is it this banging and clattering that is dear to you?" Aai asked.
"When we play, Aai, it brings the colour up in it. Just the bare name would grow tiresome," I said.
"Clap your hands softly. Keep the beat, that's all that's needed. There's no call to be stubborn about it on purpose. The playing isn't the important thing. Is it really the shouting and the banging that you love more than God's name? Shyam, worship that needlessly troubles someone else for no reason — what kind of worship is that, tell me? My worship must not stand in the way of another's worship; my prayer must not stand in the way of another's prayer. If you sing your bhajan softly, your purpose will still be served, and the purana at the temple will go on undisturbed too. Bhiku, you go now. They won't make a racket, I promise you." So saying, Aai went off, and Bhiku left too.
An argument broke out among us boys. "Look at them, coming to stop us like some great elders! God will love our bhajan far more than their purana. They sit listening to the purana, and the moment it's over, sit in that very spot gossiping about the whole village!" and so on we said. But what to do, we could not decide. At last I said, "We were in the wrong. Let's sing the bhajan softly from now on and just clap our hands. What's there in playing loudly, anyway?"
"Shyam! You're a coward. We don't care for this," Bapu said.
"Where is the cowardice in this? To act with thought is a man's credit. Is there some valour in acting without thought?" I asked.
Sulking at me, my friends went off. They loved the banging of tins more than they loved Ram's name. I was left alone. Was I truly a coward? I could make nothing of it. Weeping, I sat before the god, saying "Raghupati Raghav Rajaram" over and over.
As a child, my friends deserted me that day. In the same way, even today, grown up, friends will desert me and I shall be left alone. Just as I did in childhood, so today too I shall sit weeping, saying Ram, Ram. Rabindranath Tagore has said:
"You will have to go alone. Go, take your own lantern with you. A storm of others' criticism will blow up, and the lamp in your hand will go out. But light it again, and take the next step forward. You will have to go alone."
