Thirty-fifth Night: Mother's Anxious Life
"I had gone to study in the princely state of Aundh; but there too, God intended for me to be uprooted. I passed my days there somehow. I won't go on about that. All poor people have to pass such days. I have my mother's memories to tell; only so much of my own story as touches upon those memories am I obliged to tell.

At Pune, with my aunt, was my youngest brother, Sadanand. We all felt that the earlier Yashwant had been born again to Mother in him. But in Pune, during the plague, Sadanand suddenly left us! He went crying "Dattaguru, Dattaguru." "Look, he is calling me, I am going!" he said, and he was gone.

I was at Aundh, and there too the plague broke out. One golden son had gone, and another was far away, alone; hearing that the plague was there too, my mother's heart was in turmoil. The grief over Sadanand was still fresh. However many days passed, the water in her eyes would not dry. But before that sorrow had even lessened, worry over me began to consume her. Her life had become a life of anxiety.

Because of the plague, the Aundh school was closed. Students from outside the town were told to leave. Where was I to go? I did not even have money on hand. I sold the blanket I had with me. I sold some good books too. I raised five rupees, and once again I set out, leaving Aundh. The estimate was that the school would remain closed for two or three months.

I disembarked at Harne port. I hired a cart and came to Palgad. I got down from the cart at the hour of dawn. On the banyan tree the kite-eagles had gathered. They were crying out loudly, waking the village. All around, morning hymns and, here and there, Vedic chanting could be heard. I paid the fare and stepped into our doorway. I felt uneasy. I was afraid that seeing me would bring back, all the more strongly, my mother's memory of my younger brother, and that she would weep. Slowly I came into the courtyard. From the courtyard I came onto the veranda. Inside, Mother was churning buttermilk. As she churned, she was calmly singing a song of Krishna — a sweet, tender, loving song—

This is the song she was singing.

I stood on the veranda listening to that song. I could not gather the courage to push open the door. But how long could I go on standing there? At last I rattled the door. I knocked.

"Who is it?" Mother asked.

"It's me. Shyam." I answered.

"Shyam! My child has come, has he; I'm coming, wait!" So saying, Mother came hurrying and opened the door.

Mother clasped me to her breast. "Bow to the gods. I'm putting jaggery before them. Do that first, then sit. How I had my eyes fixed on the road waiting for you! God took him away, I thought — will another one meet my eyes, or not?" As she said this, Mother's voice choked, and I too began to cry.

Father had gone out to the latrine. As soon as he came into the courtyard, Mother went ahead and said, "I was saying, Shyam's come, our own boy, he's just come!" He washed his feet and came into the house. I bowed to him. "Shyam! I was doing rounds before Ganpati. So you've come at last — are you keeping well? Sadanand is gone!" he said, and pressed the end of his upper cloth to his eyes.

"Lie down on the bed for a while, it's cold outside, lie down," Mother said to me. I took off my clothes. I rinsed my mouth and lay down on Mother's bed. I pulled Mother's quilt over me. It was not merely a quilt, it was as though I had wrapped Mother's own love around myself. I felt as though I were lying right in Mother's embrace itself. That lying down on Mother's bed that dawn, lying wrapped in her covering — I remember it still. How many times, even in the dead of night, do I think, "I am in my mother's embrace." This feeling fills my life. How often I feel that Mother's arms are around me, and my heart overflows.

Having come home, the newness soon wore off and I settled back in. Younger Purushottam was telling me all the news of the house and the village. I was telling him my own stories. I told him how I had made a fool of myself over the kavath fruit at Aundh. In the Konkan, a hen's egg is called kavath. In the Konkan there is no kavath fruit. At Aundh, a friend once said to me, "Do you like kavath, then?" I flared up at him. My friends laughed at him for it. I told Purushottam how I had once nearly drowned in a pond at Aundh, about the Yamai temple there, the peacocks in the wilds — everything. Purushottam in turn told me how a man from Patilwadi had gone to Pasarala and died of a snakebite, how someone's cow had died from eating a poisonous leaf while grazing, and so on. Some days passed in this way, in storytelling.

By now almost a month had gone by, yet the Aundh school had still not reopened. My father began to find this hard to believe. He began to suspect that things weren't working out for me over there, and that I had simply given up and come home. This suspicion kept taking firmer hold in his mind. One night I lay in bed talking with Purushottam. The two brothers lay lovingly under one covering, talking. We had our hands laid affectionately on each other. As we talked, Purushottam fell asleep, and sleep took me too.

But suddenly I woke with a start. In my dream I had seen myself falling from some great height. When I woke, the following conversation fell upon my ears.
Mother was sorting cow-dung cakes. Preparations for the next day's vegetable were going on. Father too was sorting the dung-cakes. Their hands were busy at the work, and the two of them were talking.
"He probably couldn't manage to study over there, and that's why he's come. He found the plague as an excuse. Why else would the school not have opened yet?" Father said.
"Why would he lie? He has to endure hardship over there, yet he means to go back. He's not one to stay here eating for free. I won't let him stay." Mother said, taking my side.
"At the time, that Gopal Patwardhan was going to get him placed in the railway. That would have been good. Where is there any job to be had in these times? But the mother and son wouldn't hear of it." Father said again.
"But he's not going to take up a job just yet. He'll study. He'll leave here, mind you. He won't sit idle at home, won't be a burden eating and doing nothing." Mother said.
"Your children always seem good to you. In the end I'll be proved right. He couldn't manage over there, that's why he's come. One day the truth will come out." Father went on pressing his own point.
At last I could bear it no longer; I sat up in bed and said, "Bhau! I wasn't eavesdropping. I woke up all of a sudden. I heard what you were saying. I'll leave from here tomorrow itself. Then let there be plague at Aundh or not. If you have no faith in me, why should I stay here at all? I did not come here merely to eat and sit swatting flies. Even with the plague there, I would have stayed on, just to avoid the expense of the journey back and forth. But they wouldn't let outside students stay, that's why I came. I'll go tomorrow itself. Mother, I'm leaving tomorrow."
"Don't take his words to heart. Let the plague over there stop first. Then go, Shyam! Listen to your foolish old mother." Mother said.
"I won't stay. Send me off from here tomorrow. Bhau will have to be asked once more for ten rupees. Please give that much, out of kindness. Mother, don't worry. God protects — who can harm the one He protects? The one He means to keep alive, He will keep alive even in the thick of an epidemic, will carry safe even across a boundless ocean!" I said.
"You are his son after all! That stubborn nature of yours from childhood isn't going to disappear so easily! Go, my boys! Just stay well wherever you are, that's all — why doesn't God close these wretched eyes of mine, I don't understand at all; he takes away my good golden children, and keeps me around only to weep!" Mother said, weeping.
The night passed and day dawned. I said to Mother, "It's decided that I'm going. If not today, then in a month's time I'd have had to go anyway, wouldn't I? Give me your leave."
In the end Mother gave her consent. She never imposed her own will on another. Surrender was her strength. She never held stubbornly to anything. Her love was not one that bound; it was one that gave freedom. It gave liberty.
Angry at Father, I set out to go back. Mother could not hold back her tears. The plague had claimed one child of her womb as its victim. Another was about to leap into the plague's path himself. But what could she do! Between father and son's dispute, it was she, the cow, who was left to weep.
I touched Mother's feet. I touched Father's feet. Taking the blessings of both, I set out. Ill-fated Shyam left without heeding his mother.
I got into the cart. Friends! That was the last sight I ever had of my mother's living form! After that, my mother never again fell before my living eyes. It was only her ashen form that I saw at last, in the cremation ground! I had no idea, at that time, that I was leaving my mother forever, that I was hearing her nectar-sweet words for the last time.
But I was yet to experience the harsh truth that God's will stands against human hope. What else was there to do!
