The Leaf-Plate
In many homes in the Konkan, it is customary to eat off a leaf-plate. What beauty, what cleanliness there is in this simplicity. Give the metal plates a tin-coating, and let them carry all that filth down into your stomach. My father was very fond of eating off leaf-plates. It also saved the women some trouble — there were no plates to scrub. Father would go to the fields in the morning. Wandering here and there, attending to his work, he would return home around ten o'clock. On the way back he would bring flowers, leaves for the leaf-plates — given to him by some tenant farmer, or, if there were vegetables growing on the field-bunds, he would bring some of those too. Then Father would bathe and sit down to perform his prayers, his puja, and so on. We children, back from school, would sit down to make the leaf-plates. A fresh, green leaf-plate of new leaves, and a leaf-cup made of the same leaves.

At first I could not make a leaf-plate at all. As for the leaf-cup, I simply could not manage it. In our Konkan there is a saying: 'Patravali adhi drona, to javai shahana' — 'He who can make the leaf-cup, which is harder than the leaf-plate, even before he can make the leaf-plate itself — that son-in-law must be a clever one!'
The family would sit and make leaf-plates. Sometimes Grandmother would decide that each person should make five leaf-plates, and she would hand out the leaves to everyone accordingly. Leaf-plates are made from all sorts of leaves — banyan leaves, palas leaves, kuda leaves, dhamani leaves, the round leaves of the bhokar tree, white champa leaves — plates are made of them all. For shraddha rites, some people deliberately make leaf-plates of mahua leaves. During Chaturmas, women take a vow to eat only off leaf-plates made of mango leaves or jackfruit leaves. In the Konkan, the leaf-plate has been given a place within religious custom itself. Such is the greatness accorded to trees and their leaves.

"Shyam! Learn to make a leaf-plate. Otherwise you will get no dinner today," Mother warned me.
"I don't know how to make one, and I'm not going to make one," I too said angrily.
My sister, who had come home to her parents' house, said to me, "Shyam! Come, I'll teach you. What's so hard about it?"
"I don't want you to teach me. Go away," I answered my sister rudely. My elder sister, Akka, made a very beautiful leaf-plate. My father too was famous in the village for making leaf-plates and leaf-cups. There was a man in our village named Rambhatji. About him a whole legend had grown up. Whatever leaf came to hand, Rambhatji would simply go on stitching it in — the thought never crossed his mind that he needed a good leaf, or that a particular leaf would not fit properly here. Whatever the leaf, it always found a place in Rambhatji's leaf-plate. Whenever there was a wedding or a thread-ceremony or some other function in anyone's house, the people of the village would gather at his place and sit making leaf-plates. I too had no choice but to learn this; but I was, as it happened, a stubborn boy. I did not make a leaf-plate that day.
I did not make a leaf-plate, and Mother did not lay out a leaf for me. It had been decided that each one should sit down with the leaf-plate he had made himself. I had no leaf-plate. Everyone began to laugh. My sister Akka began pleading on my behalf. "Won't you make a leaf-plate tomorrow, Shyam? Learn from me tomorrow. Mother, serve him today — he'll make one tomorrow," Akka kept saying; but I had puffed myself up like a castor-oil plant. "I'm just not going to make one. Don't serve me any dinner. I don't care a straw. I'll stay hungry, just like that," I said in anger, and went off to the veranda. But my stomach was indeed hungry. I kept waiting to see if someone else would come to coax me round.
In the end it was my noble, unassuming Akka who came to me again. She said, "Shyam! Come along, come and eat. Once I go off to my husband's home tomorrow, I won't be here to coax you, will I! Get up, come, make a small thikole and sit down to eat on that." A small leaf-plate of three leaves is called a thikole. One of four leaves is called a chaufula. If a palas leaf was large enough, we children would eat off a single leaf — one leaf alone would suffice. A large, round leaf-plate is called a gheredar plate. My father did not care for small leaf-plates; he liked a good big round one. 'There are plenty of leaves in the forest, why be stingy about it?' he would say. 'Vistirna-patra bhojanam' — 'One should take a large leaf to eat from,' he used to say.

Akka's words melted me. Once she went to her husband's home, would she really come running to her sulking brother? She had come to visit for only two days, and yet I had not behaved properly toward her. I felt bad, and tears came to my eyes. Akka put a leaf in my hand. "Fold this one under for support," she said. I took a leaf-rib in my hand and pierced it through as a pin, but the rib was too soft and kept snapping. "Shyam! Take this other rib. This one is good," Akka said, and drew out another rib from the bundle for me. Somehow, with big clumsy stitches, I made the thikole and carried it inside.
"Serve me on this, my own leaf-plate," I said to Mother.
"Have you washed your hands and feet?" Mother asked.
"Yes, I washed them long ago. I'm not a dirty boy," I said.
"Not dirty, maybe, but you are sniffling away. Blow your nose properly, and by the time you come back I'll have served you."
Mother said.
I cleaned my nose and came back and sat down to eat.
"Eat well, eat your fill. You make such fuss for no reason. That Vasu next door is such a little fellow, yet look how nicely he makes his leaf-plate." Mother went on.
I was eating fast, in anger. The leaf-plate had been made carelessly. One of its stitches came loose and lodged in my throat. I was frightened. At last it came out. "Even the stitches go down one's throat, and still you say make your own leaf-plate. I don't know how to make one, and still you say make it," I said angrily.
"Don't they go down our throats too? This is the penance for having made it carelessly. Until you learn to make a proper leaf-plate, you will have to keep on using the one you yourself have made," Mother said.
From the next day I resolved to make good leaf-plates. I began watching how Akka made hers, how she folded the hem. Some leaves need to have a fold turned in. Wherever someone can do a thing better than we can, we must go and learn from them — where is the room for false pride in that? Every task must be done well. Whatever I do, I shall do it as well as it can be done — that should be a person's ideal. Whether it is making a leaf-plate or stringing together a book, plastering with cow-dung or weaving a shawl, this was my father's quality. When he hung out the washing on the line, how evenly he would hang it, edge matching edge. There was a poor gentleman in our village who used to hang out the washing for the Gondhalkar family. He hung the clothes out so beautifully that one could simply sit and watch. When my father watered the vegetable beds, with what a fine, thin stream he sprinkled it, guiding the stream with his hand — he took such care over it. There must be neatness in every single thing. There must be beauty in it.
My mother taught me to do everything wholeheartedly. She made me do every task well. Whoever the leaf-plate we make is set before, it must serve him well — if it is not made properly, a stitch will lodge in the diner's throat! While making a leaf-plate one must think, 'Whoever eats off this should be able to eat comfortably. It should not catch in the throat. Food should not spill out through any gap.' I learned to make good leaf-plates.
One day I deliberately laid out, for my father, a leaf-plate I myself had made. Father asked, "Chandraye! Is this your leaf-plate?"
Akka said, "No. Shyam made that one." Father said, "Since when has he learned to make them so well?"
Mother said, "That day I didn't serve him dinner, and told him he'd have to use whatever leaf-plate he made himself until he learned to make a good one — so he learned properly."
I said to Mother, "Why bring up the past now? Bhau! Can I make one well now or not?"
"You can make a beautiful one now, true enough — but can you make the leaf-cup?" Father said. "I've made the leaf-cup too, ready and waiting. I took a leaf-cup Akka had made by the well, and sat making one just like it. In the end I managed it. I'll show it to you after the meal," I said.
Having had my leaf-plate so praised, I had grown a little puffed up. After the meal I showed Father the leaf-cup. "It's good, but you went wrong here. The corners facing each other should have matching folds," he said, and corrected it for me. I took the corrected leaf-cup and showed it to Mother.
"Now who's going to scold you? You make such needless fuss, saying I can't do this, I can't do that. God has given hands and feet to everyone, and with them one can do anything — only the mind must be willing. Chandraye, give him an apricot. A treat for having learned." As Mother said this, Akka took an apricot out of the cupboard and gave it to me. How sweet it tasted! Even the nectar the gods received after the churning of the ocean could not have tasted so sweet. Sweetness does not lie in the thing itself, but in the effort made for it — joy lies in the deed itself.
