Great Tears

'Since childhood I have had the habit of bathing twice a day,' Shyam began.

'In the evening I used to go out to play. We played all sorts of games — chhapopani, langadi, running races, hide-and-seek, lakshumbai-tak-de, dera-phutla-madke-de, and many others. After I came back from playing, I would bathe. Mother would heat water for me and keep it ready. She would bring water in a copper vessel and rub my body clean. Bathing twice a day was an excellent practice. If one has bathed before going to sleep at night, the body feels clean, pure and light. Before sleeping we recite a prayer — that is the bath of the mind. When the body and mind are both clean, how soundly sleep comes.

One day I came home from playing as usual. I took off my shirt, put a dab of oil on my tuft of hair, and went and sat on the bathing stone. There was a large flat stone for bathing; the bathwater ran off toward the ivy-gourd creeper. It was the evening bath, and it did not need much water. Mother scrubbed my body thoroughly. I began pouring the remaining water over myself. The water ran out, and I began calling out.

'Mother! Wipe me dry; all the water is finished. I feel cold. Wipe me quickly.' I began shouting. In my childhood, proper towels had not become common in our village. The elder menfolk would wring out their dhotis and wipe themselves with those. Some old piece of cloth would serve to wipe the children's bodies. In the evenings, Mother would wipe my body with the loose end of her own sari.

Mother came and wiped my body and said, 'Go and pick the flowers for the puja.'

I said, 'My soles are wet; they will get muddy.

Wipe the soles of my feet.'

'What does it matter if your soles are wet? What am I to wipe them with?' Mother said.

'Spread the end of your sari on the stone; I'll put my feet on it. I'll wipe my feet dry and then jump off. I don't like getting mud on my wet feet. Spread your sari-end,' I said, holding firm.

'You really are stubborn, Shyam. Where you pick up these little whims of yours, I don't know! There, put your feet down.' Mother spread the end of her sari on the stone. I placed my feet on it, wiped them clean, and jumped off. Mother's sari got wet, but that was no concern of mine. Could she even have changed it right then? Yet, so that her child's feet should not get muddy, so as to indulge his little fancy, she let her own sari get wet. What would she not do for her child, what would she not endure, what would she not give?

I went into the house and began picking flowers for the puja. Mother came with the small oil-lamp and said, 'Shyam! You take such care that your feet should not get soiled — take the same care that your mind should not get soiled. Ask God to give you a pure mind.'

Friends! What sweet words! How hard we strive, how much care we take, to keep our bodies and our clothes clean. There are washermen so that our clothes may stay clean; there are bootblacks so that our shoes may stay clean; there is sandalwood soap to rub on our bodies. Everyone makes an effort so that no dirt should cling to body or clothing; but how much do we guard the cleanliness of our minds? We paint the walls of the temple, but we never even ask after the well-being of the deity within. Do we ever weep because our mind has become soiled? A fortunate soul who weeps because his mind is not pure is rare indeed. Such great tears are seldom seen in this world. If there is no clothing, no food, if one fails an examination, if someone dies, everyone comes and weeps. For all these other things the reservoirs of tears beside our eyes stand full; but does anyone burn with anguish because I am still not pure, still not innocent? How many feel sorrow at the thought that my mind is still soiled with filth? Meerabai has said —

'Asuvan jal sinch premveli boi.'

Watering it with the water of my tears, I have raised the creeper of love, of devotion to God. This line of Meerabai's I hum to myself again and again. It is only in a heart brimming over with tears that the lotus of devotion is born!
