Thirty-third Night: The Aspirations of the Poor
Shyam had been looking despondent of late. Could it not be the effect of his memories of his mother? Could it not be that the sorrowful, hard life of his mother, coming before his mind, had made him sad?
"Shyam! These days no smile plays on your face. Why do you look so downcast? What is troubling you? What thoughts are tormenting your mind?" Ram asked.
"Ram! In our country there is boundless sorrow, misery, poverty. I am telling my memories of my mother. They are, as it were, memories of my Mother India herself. This Mother India is drowning in misery, in servitude, in debt. Her children have nothing to eat, nothing to drink, no work, no education. My insides tear, Ram! This suffering is more than I can bear to watch. My chest splits open. What ruin subjection has brought upon India! Everywhere debt, famine, and disease! Little children are dying almost as soon as they're born! There is not a trace of luster on anyone's face. Nowhere is there vigor, nowhere enthusiasm to be seen. The very springs of life seem to have dried up! Subjection devours everything. It destroys everything. In Hindustan today there is death, not life; there is grief, not joy; there is ingratitude, not gratitude; there is greed, not love; there is brutishness, not humanity; there is darkness, not light; there is unrighteousness, not righteousness; there is fear, not fearlessness; there are bonds, not freedom; there is blind custom, not thought. This desolate sorrow, this all-pervading sorrow, sets fire to my small heart. There are millions of mothers like mine in this Bharat. Their golden lives are being reduced to dust. How can I help but be sad?"
Shyam could say no more. "Shyam! Seeing sorrow, one should rise to banish sorrow; seeing darkness, one should strive to bring light; seeing bondage, one should set oneself to break the bonds. Why despair? The more the trials a hero faces, the greater his fervor, the greater his inspiration." Ram said.
"But I am no hero; you are the hero. I envy you. I too wish I could keep striving on, undismayed, as you do. But the thread of my hope keeps snapping; my show of spirit is a borrowed one — it is not living hope." Shyam said.
"To despair is to forget God; despair is a kind of atheism. To believe that in the end all will be well, that light will come out of darkness — that itself is faith." Ram said.
"But won't the dawn that follows this night turn again into night? The world remains just as it is. I don't understand what improvement is really taking place in this world. Let it be. One shouldn't dig too deep. One should do what one can. Lift a stone out of the way; throw aside a thorn! Plant a flowering shrub; sweep the road; speak kindly to someone; smile sweetly; sit beside the sick; wipe away the tears of one who weeps. To live in this world for a couple of days! What more than this can a man as feeble as I manage? How long can a weak man like me go on patching this torn sky!"
"Why, we shall organize ourselves. We shall spread new ideas; we shall banish misery; we shall bring good fortune. Hope is dancing in every pore of my body." Ram said.
The prayer bell rang. Their talk stopped there. Everyone gathered in the prayer hall. There was the deepest stillness there. Today Ram alone was to sing a fine song. After the prayer from the Gita and the bhajan were done, Ram began to sing the song.
Ram sang a sublime song of hope. A faint smile began to play on Shyam's lips. It was Shyam himself who had composed that song at a certain time. But where was this sublime, unconquerable optimism now, within him? Shyam was the very battlefield where hope and despair fought their duel. Today he would laugh, tomorrow he would weep. Today he would leap, tomorrow he would lie prostrate. Shyam was a riddle.
The prayer was over. It was time for Shyam's story. Shyam began to speak—
"Friends! I had gone home from Dapoli, disheartened. I had gone to talk something over with Mother."
"Mother! It has become impossible for me to keep studying at this school. Father won't pay the fees, and the school won't grant a fee exemption. What am I to do? Father said, stand up in class for the fee-exemption. I stood up in the class asking for the exemption, and the master says, 'Now Shyam, are you poor? Sit down.' Mother! That we were once wealthy, people know; but that today there is nothing to eat at home, they don't know; and if I tell them, they don't believe it. The boys in the class laugh at me. I sit back down."
"Shyam! You must give up school now." Mother said calmly.
"Mother! I've only just passed the fifth standard. What should I do, leaving school at this point? What use am I today? What can I earn today?" I asked Mother.
"He was saying he'd get you placed somewhere in the railway. What else can he do? You need to be given fees and all, and there's grumbling at home over it. Better that you leave school. Take up whatever job you find, if you find one." Mother said.
"Mother! Must I start working for a living from this very age? Must I take this leech of employment onto my back from so young an age? Mother! What great leaps, what great aspirations, what dreams I had! I would study hard, become a poet, become an author, make you happy! Mother! Must all my hopes be poured away? Must all my aspirations be trampled into the mud?" I was speaking as though I had become a poet myself; feeling itself was speaking through me, making my lips dance.
"Shyam! The aspirations of the poor must merge into the dust. The self-respect of the poor must merge into the earth. The poor must do whatever falls to them to do. Many a lovely bud is eaten away by the worm within it!" Mother said.
"Mother, I feel very bad. Don't you feel anything at all for me? Do you want your son's life to be ruined like this? Don't you want me to become someone great?" I asked Mother.
"I want my son to become someone great; but not by giving his father worry, not by giving his father sorrow. If he can become great by standing on his own two feet, let him become so; but if he is to remain dependent on his father, then he must act as his father wishes." Mother said.
"Mother! What should I do? Show me the way. You have guided me till now — what should I do this time? You tell me yourself." I said to Mother.
"Dhruva left his father and mother and went into the forest. He left home and hearth and went into the wilderness. Trusting in God and in himself, he went into the forest. So you too should leave home. Go out into the vast world beyond. Dhruva did penance for God, kept fasts; you do the same for learning. What can one gain without penance? Go, stand on your own feet, endure fasts and hardship, strive and struggle, gain your learning. Become great, become learned, and come home. Our blessings go with you. Wherever you may be, I am with you in spirit always. What more can I tell you?" Mother gave her teaching of self-reliance.
"Mother! Shall I really go? You have said exactly what was in my own mind! You are within my heart, and that is why everything within my heart is known to you. Mother, over there is a princely state called Aundh, where the fees are very low. Shall I go there? I'll beg madhukari and manage to eat. In that distant village, who is there to laugh at me? Who knows me there? I'll do whatever work someone needs; you have already trained me to work. Once I am out of sight of people who know me, that's all that matters. Shall I go, then?" I asked Mother.
"Go. Begging madhukari is no sin; for a student it is not a sin at all. It is a sin only for a lazy man to beg. Go. A poor student is permitted madhukari. Live however you must, but do not steal, do not slander, do not commit sin. Never give up your regard for truth. Give up every other kind of pride. Give whatever help you are able to give. Speak sweetly. Keep a cheerful face. If the tongue is sweet, the whole world is sweet. Make good friends. Never speak dismissively of anyone, never wound anyone's heart. Study hard. Remember your mother and father; remember your brothers and sisters. Keep that memory alive — it will do you good. That memory will save you. It will keep you on the right path. Go. You have my permission. When Dhruva met Narayana, he redeemed his mother and father. You win over the goddess of learning, and redeem us." Mother was giving an inspiring mantra, a saving mantra.
"Mother! You get Father's permission; you talk him round." I said.
"I will get it for you. Don't worry. He himself has said something to that effect already." Mother assured me.
Dinner was going on that night. There was dried-mango pickle. There was kulith dal. "I was saying, Shyam wants to go off somewhere to study, let him go," Mother said to Father.
"Go where? Even there money will have to be sent. Now even setting aside a single dida in cash has become impossible. Once, with these very hands I counted out thousands of rupees; but why recall that now? My own judgment has failed. I am helpless. Do I want, today, that my children should not study? What father would want his promising, intelligent, virtuous, hard-working children not to study? But what is one to do?" Father said with great sorrow.
"Where he's going, no money will need to be sent there either. Education there, they say, is free. He'll beg madhukari. Only enough for the journey — ten rupees given to him — will do." Mother said.
"No objection at all. Let him study anywhere on his own courage. I'm not saying he must take a job. Only that I am unable to fund his studies, that's all. He has my blessing." Father said.
Our meal was over. I sat talking with Mother. "Mother! So Anna is really going, then? Going far away, not coming back soon?" younger Purushottam was asking Mother.
"Yes, child; he'll study and then he'll teach you all. He's going far away so that he'll be able to teach you." Mother was consoling him.
In the end it was decided that I should go to the princely state of Aundh.
Father chose an auspicious day. As that day drew nearer, my heart grew ever more turbulent. Now I would no longer be able to come and see Mother often! All these days I had been near her. Like a bird that flies straight home to its mother the moment it tires — but now I was going to be far away. To help Mother, to bask in her loving gaze, I used to go home even on a mere Saturday or Sunday. But that good fortune was now to vanish. Now even during the long holidays I would not be able to go home. Coming and going was simply impossible without money! Money would have to be paid out at every turn! To give me just ten rupees, Father had to plead in how many places. But I was going in order to study; I was going so that I might later give my parents happiness; I was going in order to become more worthy of serving Mother — this one thought alone gave me courage. It held back the tears in my eyes. But once I was far away, who would there be for Mother? Who would press her feet during the holidays? "Shyam! How cool your hands are. Put them on my forehead, it's burning so" — to whom would Mother say this now? Who would wash her sari? Who would chat with her at mealtimes so she might eat a couple of morsels more? Who would help turn the grindstone? Who would bring her firewood from the shed? Who would say, "Mother, I'll keep the water-trough filled"? Who would fetch her cow-dung for plastering the courtyard? Who would fill the water-jars from the well? Whenever I was home, I did all these things to help Mother. But now there was no telling when I would return. But who was I, after all? Who was I, to think I gave Mother happiness? Why should I take pride in that? God is there — the mother of the three worlds; she has care for everyone. God has compassion for all, concern for all. The supreme support of my mother and of the whole universe is He alone; He alone."
My packing was going on. The bullock cart was to leave at night. Tonight I would go, yes, go — leave Mother behind! Mother took out two clean quilts. She took out one blanket too. I said to Mother, "What do I need a blanket for? I'll spread a piece of sacking below, one quilt over that, and the other quilt to cover myself with. Keep this blanket here for when you catch a chill and need to wrap up. I don't need it."

"But you're going off to a strange land. There you know no one, no one knows you. If you fall ill, if anything happens — let this be with you. Whatever happens here, we'll manage somehow. Listen to me, child."

So saying, she tied that blanket too into my bedroll. She made me a little chivda to take along. So that my lips would not chap in the cold season, she gave me a piece of kokum oil; so that I would not be seasick on the steamer, she gave me four avla-candies, and said four bibba nuts should go along too, and fetched them out from the niche in the wall. My affectionate, hard-working mother! She had thought of even the smallest, most trifling things.

The cart was to arrive at nine that night. I somehow got through dinner. My stomach was already full — full of emotion. Mother served curd over the rice. A little time passed. The cart arrived. Father carried the luggage out and put it in the cart. I said to my younger brother, "Now don't be difficult anymore. You help Mother, child. It's you now, for Mother!" So saying, I ran my hand over his back. I bowed to the gods. Mother gave me a betel-nut, which I placed before the deities. Then I touched Father's feet. He ran his hand over my back. He could not say a word. And I laid my head on Mother's feet, and those feet were wet with my tears. Mother brought sacred ash from the hearth and applied it to me. I went to neighbor Janakivayani's house and, touching her feet, said, "Please look after my mother, help her when she's ill." "Go, Shyam, we are here for your mother, don't worry," she said. I came back to Mother once more. "Take care!" she said. I nodded. I set off. Purushottam came running up to me again and clung to me. Again I held him to my chest. At last I put him aside. I got into the cart. Father walked along behind on foot, because I was to get down near the Ganpati temple. The cart stopped at the crossroads. Father and I went in to have darshan of the god. I bowed to Ganpati. I took his tirtha and touched it to my eyes. I applied the vermilion from his feet to my forehead. "Watch over my parents!" I told the god. Once more I touched Father's feet. "Take care, my child. Look after yourself," he said.

I got into the cart. Father stood for a moment and, once the cart started, turned back. The cart started moving. The bullocks began to trot. The bells jingled. The cart of my life had started moving. I was to go out alone into the ocean of life beyond. In that ocean would I die, would I drown, or would I dive deep and bring up pearls? Who would I meet in that ocean, who would become bound to me, who would become bound to me only to be later torn away? Where the vessel would run aground, where it would founder — all was uncertain. I had set out on the courage Mother had given me. I was journeying, mounted on the wings of the fortitude she had given me. "Go like Dhruva," Mother had said! Where was that towering peak of resolute purpose, that most holy Dhruva, and where was I — your runny-nosed, ever-stumbling, ever-slipping, fickle-hearted Shyam! I was weeping. Outside it was dark. I was shedding silent tears. Our village's river went by. Jholai and Someshwar went by. The boundary of Palgad had long since been left behind, but I did not notice. Many memories were surging up and my heart was overflowing. Mother! As long as her gracious gaze was upon me, that was enough. I would not fear. Her blessing was my impenetrable armor. Wearing it, I had set out. Having taught her child to swim, Mother had let him go into the boundless ocean. In this ocean I was many times on the verge of drowning; sometimes I sank in the mud; sometimes I fell upon the sand; sometimes the waves overwhelmed me; but again and again I rose to the surface, I survived. Even now it is not that every danger has passed. Even now there are dangers. But the grace by which I have survived till today, by which I lived even as I was dying, by which I rose again after falling — that same grace will carry me through in future as well. Today my mother is no more, yet her grace still remains. Even though a mother dies, her grace does not die. Her warmth reaches us always, from within, even now."
