The Guarding of Self-Respect

'A householder is not supposed to accept dakshina; the right to accept dakshina belongs to the mendicant Brahmin priest. Because he has no other source of income, and no occupation apart from the study of the Vedas. That is why it is prescribed that dakshina should be given to a Brahmin. In other countries too there are priests; in other religions too they exist. In some places they are paid a salary by the government; among us, it is society itself that supports the Brahmin,' Shyam began.

'Once there was a wedding in our village. When the shevanti-vaan-nishchay ceremony is performed, dakshina is distributed to both the parties gathered in the mandap — the bride's side and the groom's side. This dakshina is given according to one's means. One priest from the bride's house and one priest from the groom's house go round the mandap together, distributing the dakshina. Whatever the groom's side gives, the bride's side gives the same amount. If the groom's side gives four annas each, the bride's side too gives four annas each. Whoever holds out a hand is given dakshina. When people go to a wedding, if the children are sitting right beside their elders, they naturally pick up this lesson. 'No, we don't hold out our hand for that,' the elders tell the children, and so on.

'But nowadays self-respect itself has ceased to exist. We are all mad after money. Whatever can be got for free, take it — this has become the general attitude. On trains, Japanese agents hand out cigarettes free of charge, and I have seen even the well-to-do take those free cigarettes and smoke them. Even wealthy people will go to a free dispensary and take medicine there. Even the children of the rich will apply for fee-exemptions. This is the result of poverty and of servitude of spirit.

'I went to the wedding and sat down among the children. We boys, all schoolfellows together, sat in a group. Sitting off to one side like that, one can get up to mischief, play pranks — put a coconut-tuft on someone's cap, drop pebbles into someone's pocket, give someone a quiet pinch — that sort of thing goes on. The dakshina was distributed. Some of the boys held out their hands. I too held out mine. It happened quite naturally. I did not realize at the time that it was a mistake. In childhood, having money in hand brings such joy. I took those two annas and came home, and went with great delight to give them to Mother — as though it were the fruit of my own earnings, my own labor! Priests spend twelve years learning the mantras, they perform the rites — let them take it. What right had I to those two annas? Only when each person labors and takes his due reward does the transaction look fitting.

'Mother asked, 'Where did this money come from?' I said, 'I got it at Shevanti-vad-nishchay's wedding.' Mother suddenly looked embarrassed. Her face fell. We had become poor. Had the boy brought home dakshina because we were poor? Or had we become so poor that the priest, out of pity, had placed money in her son's hand? For if the son of some well-established, respectable family had held out his hand, the priest would have said to that boy of his own accord, 'You foolish boy! Why should you hold out your hand? Aren't you from the Dongre family?' Why had the priests never said any such thing to my son? Because they had felt pity for us. Is there anything in this world more piteous, more painful, than to have someone else feel pity for you? Hundreds of such thoughts came into Mother's mind at that moment. She could not speak. She stood staring with a blank, empty gaze.

'Mother, do take the money. I haven't stolen it, you know,' I said, almost pleading.

Mother said, 'Shyam! However poor we may be, we are householders. We are not mendicant priests. The priestly profession is not ours. We are not meant to accept dakshina — that is not our proper work. We must give to others, not take from them. Priests study the Vedas and perform religious rites; they have no fields, no farmland — this dakshina is their very livelihood.'
I said, 'That Pandubhatji in our village is so wealthy! Should he go on taking dakshina too? He does money-lending; he has farmland and fields. What sort of a priest is that?'
Mother said, 'That is his own fault. In the old days, if priests received more dakshina than they needed, they would give it away to the poor; they would keep children in their homes to educate them. Is it not written in the Pandavaprataap that when King Nala gave a great deal of wealth to a Brahmin, the Brahmins distributed that wealth along the way to others? In the homes of the rishis, ever so many children used to live and study. We are householders. We should not accept dakshina. Don't ever hold out your hand again. Rohidas would not even drink water from a public water-shed. A householder should give to the world; he should not take from the world.'

Mother gave those two annas to a farmhand named Balu who lived next door. Friends! The more we take from the world, the more we become beholden to the world. We become abject and dependent. We become people who must look to others' faces for their approval. To live in abject dependence is itself a sin. But to live in haughty arrogance is a sin too. We should not become beholden to the world. In Europe, this spirit of self-respect is taught from early childhood itself. There, even living off one's own parents' money is regarded as a form of dependence and a lesser thing. There is a story told about Hoover, the President of America. He sent his own thirteen-year-old son to work for wages. Hoover was the chief president of that immensely wealthy country, America; but at that very time his young son was working under the hands of a mason. A building was under construction. While working on it, this boy fell from a height and died. Mr. Hoover felt the loss deeply; but he said, 'My son died so as to teach my nation the value of self-reliance and of labor!'

Self-reliance is the very foundation of Western education. Self-reliance keeps one's head held high; dependence bows it down. One should take nothing without labor, and one should give nothing to anyone who has not labored. 'Tuka says, he who takes without earning goes to hell too!' Whoever feeds a lazy man is himself sinning, and the lazy man sins too. Whenever we give something to some idler, he becomes dependent, abject, while we ourselves feel important. Instead, one should get some work done by him — have him split firewood, wash clothes, dig the ground. Get some task done by him. In that alone lies that person's true upliftment.

To feed one who does no work is an insult to God. It is an insult to the hands and feet, to the intelligence, that God has given. The value of self-reliance, self-respect, and labor is being taught in Russia today. Recently an American psychologist went to Russia. He had gone to observe the conditions there, the inner and outer transformations taking place. To distribute among the workers, he had brought along fountain pens, bars of chocolate, fine knives, and such things. He went into the workers' housing blocks and began offering these to them as gifts. But not a single hand was held out. No one took a single thing. He said, 'Take them, I am giving them out of goodwill.' The workers said, 'One should earn things by one's own labor. Even a gift given by another might well breed idleness, dependence, and reliance upon others in the mind. We have resolved to give not the slightest room to these vices.'

That American psychologist was astonished. What a revolution of thought this was! In the very Russia where millions of workers had once held out their hands begging, now not a single hand was raised. What self-reliance, what splendor, what worship of labor!

In labor lies one's own upliftment; in taking and giving for nothing lies degradation. The day the children of India, the whole of the Indian people, come to understand this will be a fortunate day indeed. This teaching must be given at home, in the community, in schools. It must become a religious rule that no one should be given another's leftovers to eat. The true religion is precisely this — to give encouragement to labor. The one who begs out of laziness, and the rich man who lies about on soft cushions and is fed — both alike are parasites! The rich man too lives off another's labor, and the lazy beggar too eats by another's labor. Both are parasitic growths upon the tree of society. The laborer who toils in the sun and heat, the sweeper who cleans the streets, the scavenger who carries away filth, the tanner who flays dead cattle, the cobbler who stitches sandals — all these are purer, nobler, than those who eat without earning. Create something. Create thought, create grain, create cleanliness. Create something auspicious, something beautiful, something beneficial; only then do you have the right to live. The nation in which labor that nurtures, protects, and sustains society is worshipped — that nation rises to glory. The rest are reduced to beggary.

My mother taught me self-respect; she taught me that dependence upon others is death; she taught me — do not take what belongs to another, give to others instead.
