Twenty-third Night: Ardhanari Nateshwar
During the May holidays I had gone home. I had moved up to the fourth English standard. Whenever I went home, Mother felt supported. For she was always ill. One day fever would come; the next day, once the fever had broken, she would set to work again. When fever came she would lie down; the moment it left she would rise. She had grown very weak. When I came, she felt better. I would help her fetch water, help her with the washing. I would sweep the courtyard clean. Massaging Mother's feet had become, during the holidays, quite a regular practice of mine.

One day the moonlight lay clear and bright outside. Supper was over. Father had eaten and gone out; my younger brothers had gone to sleep. Mother had finished clearing the leftover food, the cow-dung work, and so on. Mother said to me, “Shyam! Shall we grind a little, or are your hands sore? You dug in the evening. You made the gholi paste, didn't you? If your hands hurt, never mind.”
I said, “My hands don't hurt at all. Both your hand and mine are always together on the grindstone handle. When your loving hand touches mine, I get strength from it. Come, I'll set the grindstone out in the courtyard. I'll put it on the sack.” Mother told me to go ahead and set it up.
I set the grindstone out in the courtyard. Mother brought the grain. The next day we were to make ambolya. I was very fond of ambolya. Mother and son ground together in the courtyard while the moon overhead poured down a rain of nectar. A cool, gentle breeze was blowing. Mother sang ovis, and in those ovis she wove in my name, 'Shyam baby.' I felt happy.

I have loved the work of grinding since childhood, because it let me serve Mother. Grinding alongside Mother, I had also learned to feed the grain into the grindstone.
We were grinding away. Hearing the sound of the grindstone, our neighbor Janakivayani came over.
“Goodness, what's this — is Shyam grinding? I said to myself, why is she sitting grinding alone tonight, and came to see. Shyam, what is this? Aren't you studying English?” Janakivayani said to me.
I asked Mother, “Aai! What of it, if I lend a hand to grinding?”
Mother said, “Shyam! Oh, Janakibai is only teasing you. She came to look because she loves you. Now, who would think ill of someone for working? And what shame is there in helping your mother? Whoever laughs at a boy for helping his mother should be counted a savage himself. In your Bhaktivijay, didn't the Lord Himself, Pandurang, come to grind alongside Janabai?”
“Yes, that's true! But could it really be true, do you think? Did God really weave Kabir's shawls, grind Janabai's flour, wash her clothes; stand behind Namdev and clap the taal during kirtan, and dance — is all this really true, Aai?” I asked.
“Do sit, Janakibai, why stand like that?” Mother said, inviting her, and then turned to me. “Shyam, it must indeed be true. God helps those who have faith in Him and who do their work with Him in mind. You are helping me, and it was God Himself who sent you to do it. When May comes, God comes, as it were, in your form, to help me. God comes to help in the form of so many people — sometimes in Shyam's form, sometimes in Janakibai's.”
“Aai, will I ever meet God?” I asked suddenly.
“God meets those who have merit. You must do a great deal of good. You must be of use to everyone. Then God will meet you.” Mother said.
Janakivayani said to me, “Shyam, are you thinking of becoming some kind of holy man? Then why are you studying at all? Study English properly and get a good, big job. Take your mother to live with you when you're employed.”
I said, “I feel like becoming a sadhu, I feel like becoming a devotee. Aai! Dhruva sat chanting the mantra Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya. If I sit like that, will I meet God?”
Mother said, “My child, how great was Dhruva's merit from his past lives! How unshakable was his resolve! Even when his father came to offer him a kingdom, he did not turn back. Where is one to find such firm renunciation? Try to become good in this present life. Then, someday, you will meet God!”
Janakibai said, “Shyam! Let go now, I'll take a turn. You must be tired.”
I said to Mother, “Aai, you let go for a bit instead. Janakivayani and I will grind. Janakivayani, I know how to feed the grain in. I can do it even with my eyes shut. I've become quite expert at it now. Aai, do let go for a little while.”
I made Mother let go, and Janakivayani and I began grinding. I started feeding in the grain. “Janakivayani! Look how the flour is coming out. You could put it in your eye and it wouldn't sting. Just look.” I said to her.
Janakivayani said to Mother, “Really, you've turned Shyam into a proper wife for yourself!”
Mother said, “Who is there in my house to help me? Has a daughter-in-law come into the house yet? If Shyam doesn't help me, then who will? Janakibai! Sometimes women have to do men's work too. Is there any shame in that? Shyam helps me pick over the dal and rice, helps with the washing, rinses the vessels — he helps with everything. The other day he even washed my sari for me. I said, 'Shyam, people will laugh at you.' And what does he say? 'Aai! There's real joy for me in washing your sari. I wrap myself in your old worn sari — why should I feel ashamed to wash it?' Janakibai, Shyam doesn't mind at all. I may have turned him into a wife, but he likes it that way.”
Friends! I still remember Mother's inspiring words. Unless tenderness, love, a spirit of service, a readiness to endure hardship, forbearance, and the quiet doing of work without complaint arise in the hearts of men, one cannot say that their nature has come to full development. In the same way, unless courage arises in the hearts of women, the readiness to be firm when circumstances demand, the boldness to manage the household when the menfolk are absent, one cannot say that their nature has come to full development either. This, to my mind, is what marriage is; this is what marriage is meant to achieve. Through marriage, a man learns tenderness, learns the virtues of the heart. A woman learns the virtues of the intellect. Marriage is the sweet blending, the sweet cooperation, of heart and intellect, of feeling and thought. That womanly qualities should come to dwell in a man's heart, and manly qualities in a woman's — this is marriage. Ardhanarinateshwar, the god who is half woman, is humanity's ideal. A man alone is incomplete. A woman alone is incomplete. But when the two come together, two complete beings are formed. Through the marriage of two incomplete beings, two whole lives are made, as it were. Mother, it seemed, left me no need of any separate marriage at all. Through love, compassion, hard work, and service — these womanly virtues — Mother had, in effect, already married me to them.
