A Hunger for Sattvik Love

“Shall I begin, Govinda?” Shyam asked. “Wait a little while. The old grandfather hasn't come yet. If he loses even a single word from your mouth, he feels bad about it,” Govinda said.

“What is there so special in me? I only tell simple stories. People have gone foolish over nothing,” Shyam said.

“You tell these stories because you feel they are good, don't you? Or do you too find them worthless? If you tell them while feeling in your own heart that they are worthless, then you would be committing a sin. That would be a deception. How can you give to others what you yourself find unworthy and wrong?” Bhika asked.

“Besides, people have faith in you — why hurt that? They come, eager to come, because listening to you gives them joy,” Govinda said.

“Look, here comes the old grandfather. Come, sit here,” Ram said.

“This spot is fine. I'll sit right here,” the old grandfather said.

“Shyam, begin now,” Raja said.

Everyone grew eager. Shyam's story began. His heart-stirring flute began to play.

My father sent me to study English in Dapoli, a village six kos from our own. I had returned home from my uncle's place, having completed my early lessons there. For a while I studied the Vedas and such things at home. But my father decided I should learn English. By then I had had about one or two years of schooling.

Dapoli is a very beautiful village. Its climate is extremely healthful. The sea lies four kos away. Dapoli has many broad, open maidans. At one time an English regiment was stationed here, and so Dapoli is also called Camp Dapoli. From this 'Camp' the corrupted form 'Kaap' arose, and nowadays it is called Kaapdapoli. Looked at closely, my taluka came under English rule earlier than the rest of Maharashtra. Nanasaheb Peshwa, with English help, destroyed the Angre navy. That was a very great blunder. The Angre fleet had been a check upon the English. Many times the Angres had defeated the fleets of the English and others in the Arabian Sea. Shivaji Maharaj had built up a navy through great effort. Before him, not even a single Maratha boat ventured into the Arabian Sea; but this great man had recognized the importance of a navy. 'Whoever rules the sea, his is the glory' — this maxim is stated in his statecraft. But Nanasaheb himself removed this obstacle from the English path. As a reward for the help the English gave in destroying the Angre fleet, they received territory that included Bankot and other port towns of the Dapoli taluka. Yet this same taluka is the village of Velas, home of Nana Phadnavis, who wielded the sword of diplomacy; this same taluka is the birthplace of the editor of Kesari, the author of the Gita Rahasya, Lokmanya Tilak, who fought to his last breath for freedom and declared, 'Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it.' Likewise, Karmaveer Karve, who raised a revolt against social bondage, who started an ashram at Hingane with three girls, and who founded the Women's University, belongs to this same taluka. The self-respecting Vishwanath Narayan Mandlik and the mathematician Raghunath Purushottam Paranjape also belong to this taluka.

There is a great deal of forest around Dapoli too. There are dense groves of suru trees. When the wind passes through them, a sound like the roar of the sea falls upon the ear. There are also many cashew trees; in summer these cashews, red, yellow, and orange, sway on the trees like clusters of hanging lamps! The villages around Dapoli are the very homeland of natural beauty.

At that time, the English school at Dapoli was a mission school. The Dapoli boarding house was once famous throughout the Bombay Presidency. The mission school stood on a hill. All around it were plenty of grafted mango trees. The school looked truly lovely. I began attending this school. My studies began.

My village was six to six-and-a-half kos from Dapoli. I had no confidence that I could walk that whole distance on foot; but one day I walked it, and confidence came to me. From that time on I began going home every Saturday and Sunday. When school let out at two in the afternoon on Saturday, I would set off for home and reach there by the time the lamps were lit. I would spend Sunday at home in my mother's loving company, and rise before dawn on Monday to be back at school in Dapoli by ten.

One Saturday I set out for home just as usual. That day I was a little downcast and sorrowful. It felt to me as though I had no one at all in this world. This disposition has been in me from childhood. Sometimes it would suddenly come into my mind — who, really, is mine in this world? This thought has made me weep many times. I have had the experience of my eyes filling with tears for no reason at all, my heart suddenly overwhelmed. I felt myself a mere dot! A leaf on some tree! Withering away in an instant, falling away! Such thoughts of helplessness came into my mind from childhood on. From childhood I was hungry for sympathy and love. It was as though these two things had not come to me in a hundred births. As if I had been starving for a hundred lifetimes! A man can live without food; but how can he live without love? Love is the life of life. Love that is steady, that is abundant, nourishes the tree of life. Just as the life-sap fills every leaf, every branch, the whole trunk of a tree from root to tip, so should love be. When you break open a bottle of soda water, the water comes fizzing out. Love of that sort — overflowing for a moment but vanishing the next — cannot give life its freshness, its beauty, its exhilaration.

That day I was hungry, as it were, for this very love. I was setting out to breathe the air of love at home. Lokmanya Tilak used to say, 'I go and stay on Sinhagad for two months. For two months I breathe its pure, clean air — the air of freedom — and then come down. That air lasts me the whole year!' My own condition was much the same. Every eight days I would go home and breathe the air of love there. Living on that air, I would spend eight days in a loveless world, then go home again. At that age I was hungry to receive love. But today I understand that there is a far greater joy in giving love than in receiving it. Yet if a young shoot is not shielded from the fierce sun while it is small, not allowed to scorch and wither, if it is watered and not let dry up, then that same shoot will one day give shade to others. Grown tall, it will give love to thousands. Those who did not receive love in their growing years, in their childhood, become hard later in life. They too are unable to give love to the world. A man gives only what he has received.

I was walking along the road. Now and then tears came to my eyes. Along this road of six-and-a-half kos there are so many villages. At one place along the way there is forest. Near the village of Karanjani there is a well beside the road. It is said that once an entire wedding party, walking along that road by night, vanished near that well. As I drew close to that well, fear would seize me. I would start muttering 'Ram, Ram' and break into a run. When the forest came, I would think — surely no tiger will come out of this forest! I was twelve or thirteen years old then. Not very big. I grew thirsty along the way, so I climbed down into the well and drank water. It was a horse-well — that is, one built with great broad steps so that horses could be led down into it, like a stairway built along its side! I drank the water and went on. Since night was falling, I quickened my steps.

At last I reached home. The lamps had already been lit. My younger brother was reciting shlokas or something. Mother was lighting the hearth. Grandmother was muttering charms over someone's angara. If anyone had been struck by the evil eye, people would come to my grandmother for angara. She would bring a little ash on a mango leaf, and while reciting her charm, she would rub the ash between her fingers. Then this ash would be taken and applied to the forehead of whoever had been struck by the evil eye.

The moment I appeared in the courtyard, my younger brothers cried out joyfully, “Anna has come, Anna has come!” and clung to me. I went into the house.

Mother said, “Why did you leave so late? Shouldn't you set out a little earlier? Night has fallen outside.”
I said, “I simply couldn't walk any faster. I felt as though all my strength had drained away.”
“Then why did you come on foot at all? You could have come at Sankranti,” Mother said.
“Aai! I came to see you. When you look at me with love, I gain strength. I shall take this strength back with me when I return.” Saying this, I clung to my mother and began to cry. Mother too began to cry, and my brothers too began to cry. Mother wiped her own eyes. With the end of her sari she wiped mine as well.
“Here, take this hot water and wash your feet. Wait, let me rub on a little oil first. Then pour the hot water over.” So saying, Mother rubbed oil into my feet. She was rubbing oil into my feet, and I was looking at her. What joy I felt then! I do not even wish to use the word 'joy' for that state I was in then. Even that word falls short. That state was beyond words, and it was sacred.
I washed my feet and sat down beside Mother near the hearth. “Anna, tell us a story, or teach us a new shloka,” my little brothers kept saying to me. Just then Father came in from outside. He had come back troubled by something, from somewhere. Seeing me did not give him his usual pleasure. He said nothing. He washed his feet outside and sat down for his evening prayers.
“Well, have you done your evening prayers?” he asked me. At that time I performed the sandhya, though I did not understand its meaning. Still I went through the motions and muttered the words under my breath. “Not yet, I'll do it now,” I said.
“What are you doing sitting by the hearth like a woman? Get up. Go and do your sandhya,” he said angrily.
Mother said, “He's only just arrived. He's quite tired. He said he felt as though all his strength had drained away. Let him sit a little while. Shyam! Go on, do your sandhya.”
I got up and sat on the low wooden seat. I smeared a streak of holy ash on my forehead and began sipping water for the achamana. The tears in my eyes were offering God oblations of their own.
Father spoke again. “Are you doing your sandhya over there properly or not? And look how long your hair has grown! Can't find a barber, is that it? You've turned into nothing but a crow! When I was there I told you plainly to get your hair cut. Why didn't you do it? You're starting to sprout horns, it seems. Call Gondya the barber tomorrow morning, or Lakhya the barber, and get your head shaved clean. Otherwise don't stay here. Go away.”
I had come here hungry for love, and I was given curses instead. I had wanted bread, and I was given stones. I could not hold back my sobs. They broke out. “What is there to cry about now? Has anyone beaten you? All of you know how to put on a show,” Father said.
“But he'll get his hair cut tomorrow. It costs money there, and he may not have had any with him. That must be why he hasn't done it. And he has to be back at school by ten again. Shyam! Hush now! Have you finished your sandhya? Do the arati. I'll serve the food. You must be hungry.” Mother spoke in a voice like nectar. I was experiencing life and death, nectar and poison, all at once. I was experiencing summer and monsoon, autumn and winter, all together.
The arati was done. The leaf-plates were served. We sat down to eat. Mother served me curds. She served them to me alone. My little brother who sat beside me was not given any. Seeing that no one was watching me, I put the curds from my own plate into my little brother's rice and mixed it in for him. Giving him that curd, I felt a kind of fulfillment. That day I had become altogether tender of heart. If anyone had so much as touched my body anywhere that day, water would have come welling out instantly. I had become, as it were, made entirely of tears. I had turned into a very image of tears. In later years, once I was grown, I may well have given my brother money; but the sweetness that was in that curd I gave him that night, the warmth of heart in it, was something money could never buy.

We brothers lay talking together. They fell asleep, but I did not. I lay quietly sobbing. At last, sometime, sleep came to me too. At dawn Father rose and went off to the fields and so on. I was awake. Mother was mopping the floor. She was singing a song about Krishna.

I was listening to the song. My mother's name was Yashoda, and my name was Shyam. Mother was feeding me love, giving me the milk of her love to drink. I got up and went and hugged my mother. “Aai, take me on your lap and put me to sleep. Wear your old worn sari. Come, put me to sleep; pat me a little while. Let the mopping wait.” What can a mother do before her child? I had become, as it were, a newborn babe again at that moment. I lay down beside my mother. Mother patted me and sang lullaby verses.

As I listened to the ovis, I said to Mother, “Aai! I'm going to leave on my own. I won't stay here. When I came, how angry my brother got! Let me go before he comes back home.”

Mother said, “Don't say such things, Shyam. Is that a good thing to do? Listen, even if he speaks harshly, is that really what's in his heart? Someone must have insulted him somewhere outside, he must have been upset, and that's why he spoke as he did. These days our circumstances are hard. Don't you understand that? His mind is full of despair. Don't take his words to heart. Hasn't he, who has raised you all until now, at least the right to say a couple of harsh words? For so many years he has borne insults and hardships for your sake, he has raised you from infancy to what you are now. He borrows money for your education, wears torn dhotis himself, and pays for it. Should you forget all that because of two harsh words? And he spoke because your hair has grown long. Older people don't like to see that. He spoke because you are still young. Tomorrow, once you're grown, who will say anything to you, and who will listen? Shouldn't you be willing even to get a haircut, just to please your parents? Shouldn't you do even this much, so as not to hurt your parents' sense of what is right?” Mother was explaining all this to me.

“What has dharma to do with hair?” I said.
Mother said, “Dharma is in everything. What you eat, what you drink — dharma is in these too. And why do you keep your hair long in the first place? It's just vanity. To give up vanity is dharma.”
Friends! My mother may not have been able to explain it to me properly at the time; but today I understand it all. That dharma is present in everything is nothing we ashram-dwellers need to be told. To do every single thing thoughtfully, for the sake of truth, welfare, and goodness — that alone is dharma. Speaking, walking, sitting, rising, listening, eating, drinking, sleeping, bathing, washing, dressing — dharma is in all of these. Dharma is like the air, dharma is like light. Our life needs the air of dharma, wherever it may go. I kept my hair long because I wanted to look handsome! True beauty lies in virtue and in cleanliness — this I understand only today.

That day I had been about to leave in anger at Father; but Mother did not let me go. She gave me love. But she also showed me the right path. Her love was not blind, not foolish.

Mother went off to her housework. My brothers and I slept a little longer. Then I got up. I called the barber. We had a padapani barber. Padapani meant that a fixed measure of grain was given to the barber once a year, and in return he would come to the house all year round to give haircuts. On Diwali day he would come to apply oil to our bodies. These were affectionate ties. But this custom too is now disappearing even from the villages.

We bathed. Father came in from outside. On his way back he had brought some tanvashe. Tanvashe are cucumbers that have ripened and grown old. In the Konkan such tanvashe are hung up in the house and they keep for a long time — for as long as four months. Cucumbers and pumpkins from the monsoon season keep until Shimga. Once the Shimga drums sound, so the belief goes, they will keep no longer.
Father said to Mother, “I've brought these tanvashe. Make patole. Shyam likes them. I've also brought these turmeric leaves. I suppose you've both had your baths? Shyam, put a little more wood under the hearth. I'll bathe too and go to the temple. I'm going to do a full round of prayers today. Every fortnight, for your sake, I do an Ekadashani for Ganapati.”
Hearing Father's gentle words, I felt embarrassed and ashamed. He had scolded me angrily just the night before, and yet how great was his love! He prayed to God so that things might go well for me, that I might prosper, that my studies might go smoothly! Because I liked patole, he had gone wandering about outside and brought back tanvashe? And I had been about to leave in anger at him! If he had come home to find that I had gone back to Dapoli in a fit of anger, how bitterly disappointed he would have been! How much pain that loving and noble father's heart would have felt! Was this, then, his son's devotion to his father, was this gratitude, was this love — that it could not even bear two harsh words! He would have felt that his love and devotion had died over a mere two words.

I looked at Father with gratitude. To heat water on the outside hearth, I gathered dried leaves and lit a fire. He had brought flowers from the field and, going indoors, stripped the stems from the hibiscus blossoms. He arranged flowers of different colors and kinds neatly on a plate. He set out tulsi, durva grass, and bel leaves. He set aside a pinch of rice for the puja. He got everything ready for the worship. The koranti flowers, pink and very delicate, looked lovely. There were also gokarna and roses. He kept milk ready in the tirthavati vessel as an offering. He set the little box of holy ash beside the low wooden seat.

Having prepared everything for Father's puja, I began helping Mother. I sliced the cucumber and grated it. I wiped the turmeric leaves clean. I checked them for cobwebs and the like. I set about spreading the patole mixture too. I could spread it out very thin. Rice flour is mixed into the grated cucumber, and jaggery is added to it. Then this mixture is spread over a turmeric leaf. Half the leaf is spread thin with the mixture, and the other half folded over it like a lid, and the whole is steamed. Once steamed, the leaf comes away easily and the patola is ready.

Father's puja at home was drawing to a close. I went to the hearth, lit a wick-lamp from it with a sankadi, and carried it to him. He never used matches carelessly like that. After finishing his puja, Father went to the temple. I broke open a coconut. What could patole be eaten without? What would one eat patole with? In the Konkan, ghee is scarce. In poor households even purity of food is achieved with just a drop of buttermilk! In the Konkan, the lack of ghee is made up for with coconut. Fresh coconut is grated; then the grated coconut is mashed well with a little hot water and a little salt; then it is squeezed to extract its juice. This is coconut juice — they call it angaras. It tastes wonderfully rich and delicious. Along with this angaras, people in the Konkan eat sweets like patole, modak, and khandvi. I made a good, thick angaras. The meal was ready. Father came. We ate happily. That day I felt truly joyful.

“Serve Shyam another patola. And serve one for me too,” Father said to Mother. Like my mother, he too was affectionate. He never once punished us physically. Do ten sit-ups, weed the grass in the courtyard, bring four pots of water for that tree, bow ten times before the gods — these were the kinds of punishments he gave. Sometimes he would speak angrily, but he never struck us.

Once we had all eaten, Mother sat down to her own meal. I sat beside her, chatting. Just then the youngest brother, five or six years old, came up to Mother and said, “Aai, may I go?”

Mother said, “Go. But don't sit there reciting shlokas and such.” Laughing, Sadanand went off. The younger brother's name was Sadanand. Father called him by that name; we called him Babulya.

Mother said, “No, he's off to answer nature's call. He's a rascal, that one. He comes to ask permission only when he needs to go out back! Otherwise, whenever he wants to go anywhere else, he never asks. Little sly thing. And once he's there, sitting on the thakuli, he recites shlokas at the top of his voice, silly boy!” I couldn't help laughing.

As we talked, Mother said, “Shyam! If you had gone away today, how badly he would have felt! His food wouldn't have tasted good to him. He wouldn't have been able to swallow a morsel. Sometimes if he hiccups, or if a morsel of food falls from his hand onto the plate, he says, 'Who's remembering me? Gaju, or Shyam?' How much he loves you, Shyam! You know, I'm so often ill. I won't live very long, you know! One day I'll have to leave him alone. He has no brothers or sisters to look after him. Who does a poor man have? You boys — it's only by looking at you that he lives on. You are his only happiness!” As she said this, Mother's throat grew tight with emotion. She said again, “Shyam! He always says, 'If there are good sons, they will redeem their time; if not, they will become its ruin.' Don't you become its ruin. And if ruin comes, drive it away. Give him happiness.”

Mother finished her meal. I helped her too. I sprinkled water and lifted the low seat away — one sprinkles water and lifts it because grains of rice tend to fall on the seat. I gathered up all the puja vessels and the other utensils and carried them out to wash. Mother scrubbed the vessels, I rinsed them. Then Mother washed the buttermilk and curd starters in hot water. She washed Sadanand's little kondul pot, in which milk had to be set to curdle for him each day. Having washed the starters, she set them to warm behind the hearth. She checked whether there was fire enough under the milk pot. In this way Mother went about tidying up. We sat on the veranda. We played phatya-marya with Father. Each time, he would let us win against him deliberately. He gathered up all my missed throws for me. The day passed happily.

We rose at dawn. I bathed. Mother had rice ready. She served urad papad and metkut. She had also put two ivy-gourds into the rice. Janakivayani next door had given them to her because she knew I liked them. I finished my meal. I set off to leave. I touched Mother's feet. “Come again at Sankranti, will you. If your feet hurt too much, come by cart. Look for some bhareti cart. Pay two annas and come. Take care of yourself,” Mother said. I bowed to Father. “Shyam! Don't feel bad because I spoke as I did. Behave well. Study hard,” he said. Then I hugged my two younger brothers and set off. Father came along to see me off, as far as the Mahar quarter. He walked with me even further, all the way to the behala tree. There is a great behala tree where the boundary of our village ends. He turned back there, and I walked on alone.

Thinking of my parents' love, I walked along weeping. When I had gone from Dapoli to home, I had gone weeping in order to receive love. Now, going back, my heart was so full from all the love I had received that I wept again. Tears of joy, and tears of sorrow! Along the way a traveler said to me, “Why are you crying, boy? Have you no one?”

I said to him, “I have my mother and father.”

“Don't they love you? Have they driven you away?”

“No. I am crying because they love me so much. I feel bad because I am not worthy of that great, boundless love. How can I ever repay their love? Truly, how can I repay it? It is this thought that brings tears to my eyes!” The traveler who had asked looked at me with kindness and went on his way. I too hurried on.
