मागां बोलिला आध्यात्मिक । त्याउपरीं आदिभूतिक । आतां बोलिजेल आदिदैविक । तो सावध ऐका ॥ १॥

आधी आध्यात्मिक ताप सांगितला, त्यानंतर आधिभौतिक ताप सांगितला; आता आधिदैविक ताप सांगितला जाईल, तो श्रोत्यांनी सावध होऊन ऐकावा.

मागां बोलिला आध्यात्मिक । त्याउपरीं आदिभूतिक । आतां बोलिजेल आदिदैविक । तो सावध ऐका ॥ १॥

The adhyatmik affliction was described earlier, followed by the adhibhautik; now the adhidaivik affliction shall be described, let the listeners attend carefully.

शुभाशुभ कर्मानें जना । देहांतीं येमयातना । स्वर्ग नर्क भोग नाना । या नांव आधिदैविक ॥ २॥

बऱ्या-वाईट कर्मांमुळे मृत्यूनंतर माणसाला यमयातना भोगाव्या लागतात, स्वर्ग-नरकातील नाना भोग भोगावे लागतात, त्याला आधिदैविक ताप म्हणतात.

शुभाशुभ कर्मानें जना । देहांतीं येमयातना । स्वर्ग नर्क भोग नाना । या नांव आधिदैविक ॥ २॥

The torments of Yama one must undergo after death because of one's good and bad deeds, the various sufferings and pleasures of heaven and hell, this is called the adhidaivik affliction.

नाना दोष नाना पातकें । मदांधपणें अविवेकें । केलीं, परी तें दुःखदायकें । येमयातना भोगविती ॥ ३॥

मदांधपणे, अविवेकाने माणूस नाना दोष व पापे करतो, आणि ती दुःखदायक कृत्ये त्याला शेवटी यमयातना भोगायला लावतात.

नाना दोष नाना पातकें । मदांधपणें अविवेकें । केलीं, परी तें दुःखदायकें । येमयातना भोगविती ॥ ३॥

Blinded by pride and lacking discernment, a person commits countless faults and sins; and these very painful deeds ultimately force him to undergo the torments of Yama.

आंगबळें द्रव्यबळें । मनुष्यबळें राजबळें । नाना सामर्थ्याचेनि बळें । अकृत्य करिती ॥ ४॥

शारीरिक बळाने, संपत्तीच्या बळाने, माणसांच्या बळाने किंवा राजसत्तेच्या बळाने, अशा नाना सामर्थ्याच्या जोरावर माणसे अनुचित कृत्ये करतात.

आंगबळें द्रव्यबळें । मनुष्यबळें राजबळें । नाना सामर्थ्याचेनि बळें । अकृत्य करिती ॥ ४॥

Through physical strength, through wealth, through the backing of other men, or through royal power, relying on all such forms of might, people commit improper, forbidden deeds.

नीती सांडूनियां तत्वतां । करूं नये तेंचि करितां । येमयातना भोगितां । जीव जाये ॥ ५॥

नीती पूर्णपणे सोडून जे करूच नये तेच केले जाते; आणि मग यमयातना भोगताना जीव अगदी हैराण होतो.

नीती सांडूनियां तत्वतां । करूं नये तेंचि करितां । येमयातना भोगितां । जीव जाये ॥ ५॥

Casting morality aside entirely, one does exactly what should never be done; and then, in undergoing the torments of Yama, the soul is utterly wracked with suffering.

डोळे झांकून स्वार्थबुद्धीं । नाना अभिळाश कुबुद्धीं । वृत्ति भूमिसिमा सांधी । द्रव्य दारा पदार्थ ॥ ६॥

डोळे झाकून, स्वार्थबुद्धीने आणि कुबुद्धीने नाना लोभ धरून माणूस जमिनीच्या सीमा बळकावतो, तसेच धन, स्त्री आणि वस्तूंवरही अवैध हक्क सांगतो.

डोळे झांकून स्वार्थबुद्धीं । नाना अभिळाश कुबुद्धीं । वृत्ति भूमिसिमा सांधी । द्रव्य दारा पदार्थ ॥ ६॥

Blinding himself with self-interest and evil intent, driven by all kinds of greed, a person encroaches on land boundaries and lays illegitimate claim to wealth, women, and property.

मातलेपणें उन्मत्त । जीवघात कुटुंबघात । अप्रमाण क्रिया करीत । म्हणौन येमयातना ॥ ७॥

मस्तीने उन्मत्त होऊन तो हत्या करतो, कुटुंबांचा नाश करतो आणि अशा अप्रमाणित, अनुचित कृती करतो; म्हणूनच त्याला यमयातना भोगाव्या लागतात.

मातलेपणें उन्मत्त । जीवघात कुटुंबघात । अप्रमाण क्रिया करीत । म्हणौन येमयातना ॥ ७॥

Intoxicated with arrogance, he commits murder, destroys families, and engages in such unwarranted, wicked acts; and it is for this that he must suffer the torments of Yama.

मर्यादा सांडूनि चालती । ग्रामा दंडी ग्रामाधिपती । देशा दंडी देशाधिपती । नीतिन्याय सांडितां ॥ ८॥

मर्यादा सोडून वागणाऱ्या गावप्रमुखाला वरचा गावाधिपती दंड देतो, आणि नीतिन्याय सोडणाऱ्या देशाधिपतीलाही तसाच दंड होतो.

मर्यादा सांडूनि चालती । ग्रामा दंडी ग्रामाधिपती । देशा दंडी देशाधिपती । नीतिन्याय सांडितां ॥ ८॥

A village headman who oversteps his bounds is punished by his overlord; and a provincial ruler who abandons justice is likewise punished by a higher authority.

देशाधिपतीस दंडिता रावो । रायास दंडिता देवो । राजा न करितां नीतिन्यावो । म्हणौन यमयातना ॥ ९॥

देशाधिपतीला राजा दंड देतो, आणि राजाला चुकल्यास प्रत्यक्ष देव दंड देतो; राजाने नीतिन्याय न पाळल्यास त्यालाही यमयातना भोगाव्या लागतात.

देशाधिपतीस दंडिता रावो । रायास दंडिता देवो । राजा न करितां नीतिन्यावो । म्हणौन यमयातना ॥ ९॥

The king punishes the provincial ruler, and God Himself punishes the king; if even a king fails to uphold justice, he too must undergo the torments of Yama.

अनीतीनें स्वार्थ पाहे । राजा पापी हो‍ऊन राहे । राज्याअंतीं नर्क आहे । म्हणौनियां ॥ १०॥

जो राजा अनीतीने केवळ स्वतःचा स्वार्थ पाहतो, तो पापीच ठरतो आणि म्हणून त्याच्या राज्यकारभाराच्या अंती त्याला नरकच वाट्याला येतो.

अनीतीनें स्वार्थ पाहे । राजा पापी हो‍ऊन राहे । राज्याअंतीं नर्क आहे । म्हणौनियां ॥ १०॥

A king who unjustly pursues only his own self-interest becomes sinful, and so, at the end of his reign, hell alone awaits him.

राजा सांडितां राजनीति । तयास येम गांजिती । येम नीति सांडितां धावती । देवगण ॥ ११॥

राजाने राजनीती सोडली तर त्यालाही यमदूत पीडा देतात; आणि यमानेही नीती सोडली तर स्वतः देवगणच त्याच्यावर चालून येतात.

राजा सांडितां राजनीति । तयास येम गांजिती । येम नीति सांडितां धावती । देवगण ॥ ११॥

If a king abandons the code of righteous kingship, even the messengers of Yama torment him; and if Yama himself abandons justice, the gods themselves rise against him.

ऐसी मर्यादा लाविली देवें । म्हणौनि नीतीनें वर्तावें । नीति न्याय सांडितां भोगावें । येमयातनेसी ॥ १२॥

अशी मर्यादा स्वतः देवानेच घालून दिली आहे; म्हणून प्रत्येकाने नीतीनेच वागावे, कारण नीतिन्याय सोडल्यास यमयातनाच भोगावी लागते.

ऐसी मर्यादा लाविली देवें । म्हणौनि नीतीनें वर्तावें । नीति न्याय सांडितां भोगावें । येमयातनेसी ॥ १२॥

Such is the order established by God Himself; therefore everyone must act with righteousness, for whoever abandons justice must inevitably suffer the torments of Yama.

देवें प्रेरिले येम । म्हणौनि आदिदैविक नाम । तृतीय ताप दुर्गम । येमयातनेचा ॥ १३॥

देवानेच यमाला हे कार्य सोपवले आहे, म्हणून याला आधिदैविक ताप असे नाव आहे; हा तिसरा ताप म्हणजे यमयातनेचा अत्यंत दुर्गम, कठीण ताप होय.

देवें प्रेरिले येम । म्हणौनि आदिदैविक नाम । तृतीय ताप दुर्गम । येमयातनेचा ॥ १३॥

God Himself has appointed Yama to this task, which is why this is called the adhidaivik affliction; this third affliction, the torment of Yama, is an exceedingly severe and inescapable one.

येमदंड येमयातना । शास्त्रीं बोलिले प्रकार नाना । तो भोग कदापि चुकेना । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ १४॥

यमाची शिक्षा व यमयातना यांचे नाना प्रकार शास्त्रांत सांगितले आहेत; तो भोग कधीच चुकत नाही, याला आधिदैविक ताप म्हणतात.

येमदंड येमयातना । शास्त्रीं बोलिले प्रकार नाना । तो भोग कदापि चुकेना । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ १४॥

The scriptures describe many kinds of punishment and torment inflicted by Yama; this suffering can never be escaped, and this is called the adhidaivik affliction.

येमयातनेचे खेद । शास्त्रीं बोलिले विशद । शेरीरीं घालून, अप्रमाद- । नाना प्रकारें ॥ १५॥

यमयातनेतील दुःखे शास्त्रांत सविस्तर सांगितली आहेत; त्या शरीरात नाना अचूक प्रकारांनी यातना घातल्या जातात.

येमयातनेचे खेद । शास्त्रीं बोलिले विशद । शेरीरीं घालून, अप्रमाद- । नाना प्रकारें ॥ १५॥

The sufferings of Yama's torment are described in detail in the scriptures; various unerring methods of agony are inflicted upon the body.

पापपुण्याचीं शरीरे । स्वर्गीं असती कळिवरें । त्यांत घालून नाना प्रकारें । पापपुण्य भोगविती ॥ १६॥

पाप-पुण्यानुसार मिळणारी शरीरे स्वर्गात तयार असतात; त्या शरीरांत जीव घालून नाना प्रकारे पाप-पुण्याचे भोग भोगवले जातात.

पापपुण्याचीं शरीरे । स्वर्गीं असती कळिवरें । त्यांत घालून नाना प्रकारें । पापपुण्य भोगविती ॥ १६॥

Bodies suited to one's sins or merits are held ready in the heavenly realm; the soul is placed into them, and in various ways made to reap the fruit of its sins and merits.

नाना पुण्यें विळास । नाना दोषें यातना कर्कश । शास्त्रीं बोलिलें अविश्वास- । मानूंच नये ॥ १७॥

नाना पुण्यांमुळे विलास मिळतो आणि नाना दोषांमुळे कर्कश यातना भोगाव्या लागतात, असे शास्त्रांत सांगितले आहे; त्यावर अविश्वास मुळीच ठेवू नये.

नाना पुण्यें विळास । नाना दोषें यातना कर्कश । शास्त्रीं बोलिलें अविश्वास- । मानूंच नये ॥ १७॥

Various merits bring pleasure and delight, various faults bring harsh torment, so the scriptures declare; one must never doubt or disbelieve this.

वेदाज्ञेनें न चालती । हरिभक्ती न करिती । त्यास येमयातना करिती । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ १८॥

जे वेदाज्ञेप्रमाणे वागत नाहीत आणि हरिभक्ती करत नाहीत, त्यांना यमयातना भोगाव्या लागतात, याला आधिदैविक ताप म्हणतात.

वेदाज्ञेनें न चालती । हरिभक्ती न करिती । त्यास येमयातना करिती । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ १८॥

Those who do not live by the injunctions of the Vedas and do not practice devotion to God must undergo the torments of Yama; this is called the adhidaivik affliction.

अक्षोभ नर्कीं उदंड जीव । जुनाट किडे करिती रवरव । बांधोन टाकिती हातपाव । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ १९॥

अक्षोभ नावाच्या नरकात असंख्य जीव असतात, तेथे भयंकर किडे त्यांना यातना देतात आणि त्यांचे हातपाय बांधून टाकले जातात, हेही आधिदैविक ताप होय.

अक्षोभ नर्कीं उदंड जीव । जुनाट किडे करिती रवरव । बांधोन टाकिती हातपाव । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ १९॥

In the hell called Akshobha countless souls suffer, tormented there by dreadful worms causing agonizing pain, their hands and feet bound tight; this too is the adhidaivik affliction.

उदंड पैस लाहान मुख । कुंभाकार कुंड येक । दुर्गंधी उकाडा कुंभपाक । । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २०॥

विस्तीर्ण पण लहान तोंड असलेल्या घड्याच्या आकाराच्या कुंडात दुर्गंधी व उकाड्यात शिजवले जाणे, हेही आधिदैविक ताप होय.

उदंड पैस लाहान मुख । कुंभाकार कुंड येक । दुर्गंधी उकाडा कुंभपाक । । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २०॥

Being boiled in the pot-shaped pit of a hell, wide within but narrow-mouthed, amid unbearable stench and heat, this too is the adhidaivik affliction.

तप्तभूमिका ताविती । जळत स्थंभ पोटाळविती । नाना सांडस लाविती । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २१॥

तापलेल्या जमिनीवर उभे करणे, जळत्या खांबांना मिठी मारायला लावणे आणि नाना चिमट्यांनी छळ करणे, हेही आधिदैविक ताप होय.

तप्तभूमिका ताविती । जळत स्थंभ पोटाळविती । नाना सांडस लाविती । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २१॥

Being made to stand on scorching-hot ground, forced to embrace red-hot pillars, and tormented with all manner of tongs, these too are the adhidaivik affliction.

येमदंडाचे उदंड मार । यातनेची सामग्री अपार । भोग भोगिती पाअपी नर । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २२॥

यमाच्या दंडाचे असंख्य फटके आणि यातनांची अगणित साधने, अशा प्रकारे पापी माणसे हे भोग भोगतात, हेही आधिदैविक ताप होय.

येमदंडाचे उदंड मार । यातनेची सामग्री अपार । भोग भोगिती पाअपी नर । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २२॥

Countless blows from Yama's rod, and endless instruments of torment; sinful men must suffer all these sufferings, and this too is the adhidaivik affliction.

पृथ्वीमध्यें मार नाना । त्याहून कठीण येमयातना । मरितां उसंतचि असेना । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २३॥

पृथ्वीवर नाना प्रकारचे मार बसतात, पण यमयातना त्याहूनही कठोर असते, कारण तेथे मरून सुटकाही मिळत नाही, हेही आधिदैविक ताप होय.

पृथ्वीमध्यें मार नाना । त्याहून कठीण येमयातना । मरितां उसंतचि असेना । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २३॥

There are many kinds of beating in this world, but the torment of Yama is far harsher still, for there one cannot even die to find release; this too is the adhidaivik affliction.

चौघे चौंकडे वोढिती । येक ते झोंकून पाडिती । ताणिती मारिती वोढूनि नेती । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २४॥

चार यमदूत चारही बाजूंनी ओढतात, कोणी झोकून खाली पाडतात, ताणून-मारून फरफटत नेतात, हेही आधिदैविक ताप होय.

चौघे चौंकडे वोढिती । येक ते झोंकून पाडिती । ताणिती मारिती वोढूनि नेती । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २४॥

Four messengers of Yama drag him from four sides, some fling him down, others stretch, beat, and drag him along; this too is the adhidaivik affliction.

उठवेना बसवेना । रडवेना पडवेना । यातनेवरी यातना । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २५॥

त्याला उठताही येत नाही, बसताही येत नाही, रडताही येत नाही की पडताही येत नाही; यातनेवर यातनाच चालू राहते, हेही आधिदैविक ताप होय.

उठवेना बसवेना । रडवेना पडवेना । यातनेवरी यातना । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २५॥

He can neither rise nor sit, neither weep nor even collapse; torment piled upon torment never ceases, and this too is the adhidaivik affliction.

आक्रंदे रडे आणि फुंजे । धकाधकीनें निर्बुजे । झुर्झरों पंजर हो‍ऊन झिजे । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २६॥

तो आक्रोश करतो, रडतो, हुंदके देतो, धक्काबुक्कीने भांबावून जातो आणि झुरत झुरत हाडांचा सापळाच होऊन झिजत जातो, हेही आधिदैविक ताप होय.

आक्रंदे रडे आणि फुंजे । धकाधकीनें निर्बुजे । झुर्झरों पंजर हो‍ऊन झिजे । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २६॥

He wails, weeps, and sobs, is left dazed by the constant buffeting, and wastes away, pining, until he becomes nothing but a bag of bones; this too is the adhidaivik affliction.

कर्कश वचनें कर्कश मार । यातनेचे नाना प्रकार । त्रास पावती दोषी नर । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २७॥

कठोर शब्द, कठोर मार आणि यातनांचे नाना प्रकार यांनी पापी माणसे त्रासली जातात, हेही आधिदैविक ताप होय.

कर्कश वचनें कर्कश मार । यातनेचे नाना प्रकार । त्रास पावती दोषी नर । या नांव आदिदैविक ॥ २७॥

Harsh words, harsh blows, and all manner of torments plague these sinful men; this too is the adhidaivik affliction.

मागां बोलिलां राजदंड । त्याहून येमदंड उदंड । तेथील यातना प्रचंड । भीमरूप दारुण ॥ २८॥

आधी राजाने दिलेल्या शिक्षेबद्दल सांगितले, पण यमाची शिक्षा त्याहूनही कितीतरी अधिक असते; तेथील यातना प्रचंड, भीषण आणि भयंकर असते.

मागां बोलिलां राजदंड । त्याहून येमदंड उदंड । तेथील यातना प्रचंड । भीमरूप दारुण ॥ २८॥

The punishment given by a king was described earlier, but Yama's punishment is far greater still; the torment there is immense, terrifying, and dreadful.

आध्यात्मिक आदिभूतिक । त्याहूनि विशेष आदिदैविक । अल्प संकेतें कांहींयेक । कळावया बोलिलें ॥२९॥

आध्यात्मिक व आधिभौतिक तापांहूनही आधिदैविक ताप अधिक भयंकर आहे; याबद्दल थोडक्यात संकेताने काहीतरी कळावे म्हणून सांगितले आहे.

आध्यात्मिक आदिभूतिक । त्याहूनि विशेष आदिदैविक । अल्प संकेतें कांहींयेक । कळावया बोलिलें ॥२९॥

The adhidaivik affliction is even more terrible than the adhyatmik and adhibhautik ones; this much has been said briefly, only so that its nature might be indicated and understood.
