आतां सकळांचे ज्नमस्थान । सकळ जीवांचे जीवन । जयास आपोनारायेण । ऐसें बोलिजे ॥ १ ॥

Now let us speak of that which is the birthplace of all and the very life of every living being - that which is called Apo-Narayana, the Lord as Water.

पृथ्वीस आधार आवर्णोदक । सप्तसिंधूचें सिंधोदक । नाना मेघीचें मेघोदक । भूमंडळीं चालिलें ॥ २ ॥

The earth rests upon the encircling primal ocean; the waters of the seven seas, and the rain-water of countless clouds, all flow across this earthly realm.

नाना नद्या नाना देसीं । वाहात मिळाल्या सागरासी । लाहानथोर पुण्यरासी । अगाध महिमे ॥ ३ ॥

Countless rivers, flowing through countless lands, merge at last into the ocean; great or small, each is a treasury of merit, its glory beyond measure.

नद्या पर्वतींहून कोंसळल्या । नाना सांकडीमधें रिचविल्या । धबाबां खळाळां चालिल्या । असंभाव्य ॥ ४ ॥

Rivers cascade down from the mountains, pour through countless narrow gorges, and rush on in torrents, roaring and gurgling beyond all counting.

कूप बावी सरोवरें । उदंड तळीं थोरथोरें । निर्मळें उचंबळती नीरें । नाना देसीं ॥ ५ ॥

Wells, stepwells, lakes, and countless great reservoirs - in every land their pure waters ripple and overflow.

गायेमुखें पाट जाती । नाना कालवे वाहती । नाना झया झिरपती । झरती नीरें ॥ ६ ॥

Water-channels flow from carved spouts, canals run everywhere, and countless springs seep and trickle - water is forever oozing and flowing.

डुरें विहीरें पाझर । पर्वत फुटोन वाहे नीर । ऐसे उदकाचे प्रकर । भूमंडळीं ॥ ७ ॥

Ponds, wells, seeping springs, and streams that burst forth from cracked mountains - such are the many forms of water spread across the earth.

जितुके गिरी तितुक्या धारा । कोंसळती भयंकरा । पाभळ वाहाळा अपारा । उकळ्या सांडिती ॥ ८ ॥

As many as there are mountains, so many terrifying torrents come crashing down, and countless streams and rivulets surge and foam.

भूमंडळीचें जळ आघवें। किती म्हणोनी सांगावें । नाना कारंजीं आणावें । बांधोनी पाणी ॥ ९ ॥

How much can one even begin to tell of all the water on this earth? Some of it is even dammed and channeled to make countless fountains.

डोहो डवंके खबाडीं टांकीं । नाना गिरिकंदरीं अनेकीं । नाना जळें नाना लोकीं । वेगळालीं ॥ १० ॥

Deep pools, ponds, hollows, cisterns, and countless spots within mountain crevices - waters of every kind, distinct in every place.

तीर्थें येकाहून येक । माहां पवित्र पुण्यदायक । अगाध महिमा शास्त्रकारक । बोलोनि गेले ॥ ११ ॥

Sacred bathing-places, each holier and more meritorious than the last - the scriptures themselves have spoken of their boundless glory.

नाना तीर्थांची पुण्योदकें । नाना स्थळोस्थळीं सीतळोदकें । तैसींच नाना उष्णोदकें । ठाईं ठाईं ॥ १२ ॥

The meritorious waters of countless holy places, cool waters found in one spot after another, and equally, hot springs here and there.

नाना वल्लीमधें जीवन । नाना फळीं फुलीं जीवन । नाना कंदीं मुळीं जीवन । गुणकारकें ॥ १३ ॥

Water exists within countless creepers, within every fruit and flower, and within every root and tuber, each carrying its own beneficial quality.

क्षीरोदकें सिंधोदकें । विषोदकें पीयूषोदकें । नाना स्थळांतरीं उदकें । नाना गुणाचीं ॥ १४ ॥

Milk-like waters, ocean waters, poisonous waters, nectar-like waters - the waters found in different places carry entirely different qualities.

नाना युक्षदंडाचे रस । नाना फळांचे नाना रस । नाना प्रकारीचे गोरस। मद पारा गुळत्र ॥ १५ ॥

The sap of countless plant-stalks, the juice of countless fruits, every kind of dairy product, as well as liquor, mercury and molasses-syrup - all these too are forms of water.

नाना मुक्तफळांचें पाणी । नाना रत्नी तळपें पाणी । नाना शस्त्रामधें पाणी । नाना गुणाचें ॥ १६ ॥

The luster ("water") of pearls, the sheen of countless gems, and the fine temper ("water") of a sword-blade - all these too are forms of "water," each with its own quality.

शुक्लीत श्रोणीत लाळ मूत्र स्वेद । नाना उदकाचे नाना भेद । विवरोन पाहातां विशद । होत जातें ॥ १७ ॥

Semen, blood, saliva, urine, sweat - all these are but different forms of water; the more closely one examines it, the clearer this becomes.

उदकाचे देह केवळ । उदकाचेंचि भूमंडळ । चंद्रमंडळ सूर्यमंडळ । उदकाकरितां ॥ १८ ॥

This body is made wholly of water, and this earth too is made of water; even the orb of the moon and the orb of the sun exist because of water.

क्षारसिंधु क्षीरसिंधु । सुरासिंधु आज्यसिंधु । दधिसिंधु युक्षरससिंधु । शुद्ध सिंधु उदकाचा ॥ १९ ॥

The ocean of salt water, the ocean of milk, the ocean of wine, the ocean of clarified butter, the ocean of curds, the ocean of sugarcane juice, and the ocean of pure water - the seven seas, all forms of water.

ऐसें उदक विस्तारलें । मुळापासून सेवटा आलें । मधेहि ठाईं ठाईं उमटलें । ठाईं ठाईं गुप्त ॥ २० ॥

Thus water extends everywhere, from the very beginning to the very end; in some places it appears openly, in others it remains hidden.

जे जे बीजीं मिश्रीत जालें । तो तो स्वाद घेऊन उठिलें । उसामधें गोडीस आलें । परम सुंदर ॥ २१ ॥

Whatever seed it mingles with, it takes on that very flavor and springs forth accordingly; in sugarcane, for instance, it turns into the most delightful sweetness.

उदकाचें बांधा हें शरीर । उदक चि पाहिजे तदनंतर । उदकचि उत्पत्तिविस्तार । किती म्हणोनी सांगावा ॥ २२ ॥

This body itself is built of water, and thereafter it needs water to survive; the whole expanse of creation springs from water alone - how much of it can one possibly describe?

उदक तारक उदक मारक । उदक नाना सौख्यदायेक । पाहातं उदकाचा विवेक । अलोलिक आहे ॥ २३ ॥

Water saves, and water also destroys; water grants every kind of happiness as well; when one truly reflects on water, it proves to be an extraordinary marvel.

भूमंडळीं धांवे नीर । नाना ध्वनी त्या सुंदर । धबाबां धबाबां थोर । रिचवती धारा ॥ २४ ॥

As water races across the earth, it makes countless beautiful sounds; great cascades pour down with a mighty roar.

ठाईं ठाईं डोहो तुंबती । विशाळ तळीं डबाबिती । चबाबिती थबाबिती । कालवे पाट ॥ २५ ॥

Here and there deep pools fill and brim over, vast reservoirs swell and overflow, and canals and channels gurgle and splash along.

येकी पालथ्या गंगा वाहाती । उदकें सन्निधचि असती । खळाळां झरे वाहाती । भूमीचे पोटीं ॥ २६ ॥

Some rivers flow, as it were, upside-down beneath the surface, their waters ever near at hand; springs flow gurgling deep within the earth's womb.

भूगर्भीं डोहो भरलें । कोण्ही देखिले ना ऐकिले । ठाईं ठाईं झोवीरे जाले । विदुल्यतांचे ॥ २७ ॥

Deep within the earth lie pools no one has ever seen or heard of; and hidden there too, in place after place, lie stores of lightning itself.

पृथ्वीतळीं पाणी भरलें । पृथ्वीमधें पाणी खेळे । पृथ्वी प्रग्टलें । उदंड पाणी ॥ २८ ॥

Water fills the depths beneath the earth, water plays within the earth itself, and from the earth too, abundant water springs forth.

स्वर्गमृत्यपाताळीं । येक नदी तीन ताळीं । मेघोदक अंतराळीं । वृष्टी करी ॥ २९ ॥

A single river (the Ganga) flows through all three realms - heaven, the mortal world, and the netherworld; and in the sky above, the rain-clouds pour down their showers.

पृथ्वीचें मूळ जीवन । जीवनाचें मूळ दहन । दहनाचें मूळ पवन । थोराहून थोर ॥ ३० ॥

The root of the earth is water; the root of water is fire; and the root of fire is air, which is greater than even the greatest.

त्याहून थोर परमेश्वर । महद्‍भूतांचा विचार । त्याहून थोर परात्पर । परब्रह्म जाणावें ॥ ३१ ॥

Greater than even that air is God himself, the very intelligence behind these great elements; and beyond even Him, know the supreme, transcendent Parabrahma.
