पृथ्वीस होईल अंत । भूतांस मांडेल कल्पांत । ऐसा समाचार साध्यंत । शास्त्रीं निरोपिला ॥ १ ॥

The earth will meet its end, and a cosmic dissolution will befall all beings; such a detailed account has been given in the scriptures.

शत वरुषें अनावृष्टि । तेणें जळेल हे सृष्टि । पर्वत माती ऐसी पृष्ठी । भूमीची तरके ॥ २ ॥

For a hundred years there will be no rain, and this creation will be scorched by drought; mountains will crumble to dust and the earth's very surface will crack.

बारा कळीं सूर्यमंडळा । किर्णापासून निघती ज्वाळा । शत वरुषें भूगोळा । दहन होये ॥ ३ ॥

Flames will shoot out from the rays of all twelve suns; in this way the earth will be consumed by fire for a hundred years.

सिंधुरवर्ण वसुंधरा । ज्वाळा लागती फणिवरा । तो आहाळोन सरारां । विष वमी ॥ ४ ॥

When those flames reach even the great serpent Shesha, he too gets scorched and, writhing in agony, spews forth poison.

त्या विषाच्या ज्वाळा निघती । तेणें पाताळें जळती । माहापावकें भस्म होती। पाताळ लोक ॥ ५ ॥

Flames rise even from that poison, burning the netherworlds; by that great fire the nether regions are reduced to ashes.

तेथें माहाभूतें खवळती । प्रळयेवात सुटती । प्रळयेपावक वाढती। चहूंकडे ॥ ६ ॥

There the great elements grow violently agitated, the winds of the final dissolution break loose, and in every direction the fire of dissolution flares up.

तेथें अक्रा रुद्र खवळले । बारा सूर्य कडकडिले । पावकमात्र येकवटले । प्रळयेकाळीं ॥ ७ ॥

There the eleven Rudras rage furiously, the twelve suns blaze with a roar, and at the time of dissolution all fires merge into one.

वायो विजांचे तडाखे । तेणें पृथ्वी अवघी तरखे । कठिणत्व अवघेंचि फांके । चहुंकडे ॥ ८ ॥

The blows of wind and lightning are so fierce that the whole earth trembles, and its very solidity disperses in every direction.

तेथें मेरूची कोण गणना । कोण सांभाळिल कोणा । चंद्र सूर्य तारांगणा । मूस जाली ॥ ९ ॥

At that time who can even reckon Mount Meru, who can protect whom? The moon, sun and stars all melt into a single molten mass.

पृथ्वीनें विरी सांडिली । अवघी धगधगायेमान जाली । ब्रह्मांडभटी जळोन गेली । येकसरां ॥ १० ॥

The earth lost all its solidity and became entirely ablaze; the whole universe seemed to become one furnace, burning at once.

जळोनि विरी सांडिली । विशेष माहावृष्टी जाली ॥ तेणें पृथ्वी विराली। जळामधें ॥ ११ ॥

Once its solidity had burnt away, a tremendous downpour began; by that rain the earth dissolved entirely into water.

भाजला चुना जळीं विरे । तैसा पृथ्वीस धीर न धरे । विरी सांडुनिया त्वरें । जळीं मिळाली ॥ १२ ॥

Just as burnt lime dissolves in water, so the earth too could not hold its ground; losing its solidity, it quickly merged into the water.

शेष कूर्म वार्‍हाव गेला । पृथ्वीचा आधार तुटला । सत्व सांडून जळाला । मिळोन गेली ॥ १३॥

Shesha and Kurma withdrew, and the earth's very support gave way; losing its substance, it dissolved and merged away into the water.

तेथें प्रळयेमेघ उचलले । कठिण घोषें गर्जिनले । अखंड विजा कडकडिले । ध्वनि घोष ॥१४ ॥

Then the clouds of dissolution surged up, roaring with a harsh thunder; incessant lightning crackled amid a deafening din.

पर्वतप्राये पडती गारा । पर्वत उडती ऐसा वारा । निबिड तया अंधकारा। उपमाचि नाहीं ॥ १५ ॥

Hailstones as huge as mountains began to fall, and winds strong enough to fling mountains raged; that dense darkness was truly beyond comparison.

सिंधु नद्या एकवटल्या । नेणो नभींहून रिचवल्या । संधिच नाहीं धारा मिळाल्या । अखंड पाणी ॥ १६ ॥

Oceans and rivers merged into one; no one could tell how much water poured from the sky — the streams joined without a break, an unbroken flood of water.

तेथें मछ मूर्म सर्प पडती । पर्वतासारिखे दिसती । गर्जना होतां मिसळती । जळांत जळें ॥ १७ ॥

There fish, tortoises and serpents fell, looking as huge as mountains; as the thunder roared they too dissolved, water merging into water.

सप्त सिंधु आवर्णीं गेले । आवर्णवेडे मोकळे जाले । जळरूप जालियां खवळले । प्रळयेपावक ॥ १८ ॥

All seven oceans dissolved into their bounding limit, and then that limit itself gave way; once everything had turned to water, the fire of dissolution flared up once more.

ब्रह्मांडाऐसा तप्त लोहो । शोषी जळाचा समूहो । तैसे जळास जालें पाहो । अपूर्व मोठें॥ १९ ॥

As a mass of molten iron the size of the universe drinks up a whole body of water, so it happened to that water — a wonder beyond compare.

तेणें आटोन गेलें पाणी । असंभाव्य माजला वन्ही । तया वन्हीस केली झडपणी । प्रळयवातें ॥ २० ॥

By this all the water dried up and an immense fire raged; but that fire too was lashed and swept away by the wind of dissolution.

दीपास पालव घातला । तैसा प्रळयेपावक विझाला । पुढें वायो प्रबळला । असंभाव्य ॥ २१ ॥

As a gust snuffs out a lamp, so the fire of dissolution was extinguished; after that the wind grew overwhelmingly powerful.

उदंड पोकळी थोडा वारा । तेणें वितळोन गेला सारा । पंचभूतांचा पसारा । आटोपला ॥ २२ ॥

Vast emptiness remained with only a little wind, and even that finally dissolved away; the whole expanse of the five great elements was folded up.

महद्भूात मूळमाया। विस्मरणें वितुळे काया । पदार्थमात्र राहावया । ठाव नाहीं॥ २३ ॥

The great elements and the root-Maya itself dissolve into oblivion; there remains no place left for even a single thing to exist.

दृश्य हलकालोळें नेलें । जड चंचळ वितुळलें । याउपरी शाश्वत उरलें । परब्रह्म तें ॥ २४ ॥

The whole visible world was swept away, everything gross and restless dissolved; after all this, what alone remained, eternal and unchanging, was the supreme Brahman.
